I visited on a Tuesday around 3:30p. I was on a mission to do reconnaissance for a Habachi experience that I wanted to give a cousin. From my reconnaissance results, everything was wonderful at this restaurant. The hostess greeted me immediately and gave me a tour of the restaurant when I told her that I was surveying and comparing different Japanese restaurants in the area. She asked questions about my event and what I wanted in the experience. The restaurant was bright and clean, which I absolutely loved. Other places were way too dark for my preference. We toured the bar area, the sushi area, and the hibachi area. Everything was clean, organized and inviting. The hostess was very friendly, informative and helpful. She asked about the times that I might come and even suggested the best times for particular days. I felt so comfortable that I wanted to end the tour and order something to eat on this mission, but I decided against it until I found out that they serve dim sum. Since these delicacies are generally not available where I live, I decided to try a few of my favorites. While the taste of the shrimp & pork dumplings was underwhelming, the sesame balls were perfect. I am excited to bring my family here for the hibachi experience and I will update this review afterward. Update after the hibachi experience. When the five of us arrived on a Friday at 5:30 PM, we were greeted immediately. My tour guide from the previous day, remembered me and told the hostess to seat us at a special table. Then the usual process of hibachi started. Our cook was very interactive, funny and entertaining. He prepared our food wonderfully, seasoned it well and entertained us expertly. My cousin, whom had never experienced a hibachi dinner/entertainment prior to this, thoroughly enjoyed her dinner and raved about coming back sometime soon. My family and I love this place. We travel a lot for tennis and every time we come to Mobile we eat at ShiSo. We love Japanese and this place always makes for a good dinner! They have hibachi at the large tables if you want to go that route or you can dine at a regular table or booth. The bar is beautiful and well stocked. The waitstaff is always so nice and knowledgeable. The sushi is always fresh. The crab ragoons and dumplings are great appetizers. Shiso's got personality -- the sushi here is fun, creative, and full of surprises. You can tell they actually enjoy what they're doing in the kitchen, which makes it easy to enjoy what's coming out of it. The fish was fresh and flavorful, and the rolls had that nice mix of texture and flair that keeps you guessing in a good way. Now, about the dim sum: the ribs with black beans turned into a bit of a bone buffet (great if you're part-time paleontologist, less great if you're hungry). The pan-fried gyoza seemed to have skipped the "fried" part of its job description -- more soft than sizzle. But the sushi? Solid win. It's the reason you come here, and the reason you'll come back. Shiso is the kind of spot that makes Mobile feel like it's playing in the big leagues of sushi creativity -- just maybe let someone else take the dim sum experiment for the team. read more

I'm not really prone to write a review on food, but this experience truly made me change my mind. When I first walked in, we didn't really get greeted, it was a "how many?" But it was fine, didn't really mind that. Me and my mother sat down and our server didn't introduce herself either and just said "what do you want to drink." Now, it may seem that I'm over reacting but customer service goes a long way and I just felt like she did not want to serve us. Once our order was taken, we genuinely waited about 20 or so to get one item as the other items followed 5-10 minutes later. One of the items I ordered was the fried pork dumplings. My server didn't remember that I ordered those and left it on my table and asked if I did order those. Those came out cold and the oil that was dripping from them was black and looked super old. The next to follow was my steak bento box. Now, I was asked what temp I wanted my steak and I said medium rare (the correct temp) My steak was blue raw with a hard sear. It was so raw I could taste the blood and hear the cow moo. My sushi was warm. I don't think a California roll with a crab stick in the middle should be warm but maybe I could be wrong. They forgot my miso soup as well. My bento box just was not it. The rest of the food was okay, nothing that I would rave about. What made this experience more unpleasant was just the service. Idk what else to say about it; it was just super unpleasant and just seemed super unprofessional. On top of all of that, the prices on the food was super expensive on sub par quality. On the bright side, my mother enjoyed her fish dish. I'm not sure what she got but it was a steamed fish in a redish sauce. Would I recommend coming here? My review can speak for that. Omg We went to lunch there this week and was totally shocked! The restaurant is tastefully decorated and modern and very nice. We ordered the Mongolian beef and the Chicken w garlic sauce and both were EXCELLENT. We will definitely be back and the biggest surprise of all, they had SESAME BALLS! I love them and I always loom for them but so many times they aren't available and these were great! I highly recommend trying this. We spent nearly as much as one of the many mediocre restaurants in mobile and I am so glad this place exists! I can't wait to try More dishes! Just a very nice surprise read more

This was our first time eating here. We stopped in after visiting family in the hospital. The atmosphere was pretty cool and the hibachi from the kitchen was OK; the vegetables were mushy and overcooked and the meat needed a little more seasoning, but I'd order it again. The dim sum menu was cool! We tried one of the shrimp dumpling items (interesting texture, but I'm glad I tried them) and the cheese wontons (delicious) for our apps. The reason this isn't rating higher is that after the meal, our waitress was pressuring us to leave a cash tip due to the tip-sharing policy of the restaurant for leaving tips on a card. I don't carry cash, and when I told her, she then started pushing me to download Cash App... I get not wanting to share your tip with people that didn't work as hard as you do, or maybe didn't do anything at all while you were waiting on us, but trying to get a patron to download an app to send you money? Me and my husband went for dinner. The restaurant wasn't very busy a few hibachi tables and about 5-6 regular tables. We were seated and waited 15 minutes and no one come to our table to take our drink orders. We had 3 employees walk by us without saying a word. there was also a group of employees talking loudly and yelling and laughing standing at the sushi bar behind us. Came in on a Saturday afternoon for 2. Definitely caught my eye driving down Airport as I was like when did this get here? Walking up I saw advertisements outside that there also happens to be dim sum here which interesting because it's a Japanese restaurant. Upon entering they asked me if I was here for dim sum or hibachi I said no and I was sat at some tables. The interior is very impressive and easy on the eyes. I really liked the ambiance especially the hibachi area. I ended up ordered the tuna tataki for an app and we ended up ordering the Sushi Bento Lunch Box. The tuna tataki came out and looked really nice. I loved the presentation. There was a nice crust on the tuna on all the pieces, and they have some roe and scallion garnish. Everything's going great so far, but the taste of the tuna seemed very lackluster. Just seemed like not the freshest cut of tuna. The ponzu it comes in as well seemed to be not too fresh, or atleast not homemade as the citrus in the ponzu tasted kind of flat as well. Tasted like slightly sour soy sauce which I wish it was a bit brighter. Moving onto the bento box very impressed with the portion sizes. Big pile of fried rice, tuna roll, some noodles, and nigiri. The tuna had the same taste so same con there, but I liked the sweet shrimp and crab. The box also comes with a miso soup that I really enjoyed. Would recommend trying or stopping for lunch if it's nearby as I think it's a great value. For 2 bento boxes and the tuna tatake came out to about $50 and I was pretty full. Tuna being not the freshest is my only con, but the other sushi was pretty good. read more

I had no idea Shiso existed until I was leaving the Mobile airport and saw an advertisement for the restaurant. I decided to try it out and see what it was about. All I knew was it was a Japanese restaurant. I didn't know what to order. Fried rice is always a good choice I thought. I decided to get the shrimp fried rice. I ordered my food and it was soon ready. When I got to the restaurant the woman at the front desk was there with my food. At home I was enthusiastic to try my meal. It didn't disappoint at all. The rice was amazing. It had a smoky grill flavor. I don't what it was but it tasted much different than all the other fried rice I've tried. The shrimp was delicious as well. read more

Went for dinner based on the reviews, and I'm not sure what we were missing but the food really wasn't great. I love sushi, but I was totally unimpressed with both the rolls we got. The fish had an off taste to it, so we didn't finish them. The hot and sour soup was underwhelming. Hibachi was ok, but the fried rice was bland. Best thing we ordered was the General Tso's chicken off the Chinese menu. Everything else was better from a takeout place. And the cost? Wow! It was super pricey. Our bill was almost $200 for 5 people, and 3 of us had water to drink while the other 2 drank soda. Plus they charged an automatic gratuity of 18%, which I don't know that I've ever seen for a party of just 5 people. Plus, even though the restaurant wasn't busy at all, they wouldn't seat us until everyone arrived. All in all it wasn't worth what we paid, and we won't be back. read more

I've been here several times because I enjoy the hibachi and dim sum. Unfortunately, I have now witnessed the owner yelling at staff on three separate visits. At this point, it feels less like an employee problem and more like a pattern of toxic culture. Watching employees be publicly reprimanded is uncomfortable as a customer and speaks to what the young employees are dealing with behind the scenes. A restaurant's culture matters just as much as its food. I hope the owner reflects on this and chooses to do better. read more

We have really grown to like this place. The lunch hibachi is excellently priced-but I do feel dinner is a little high for the area. The Sukiyaki is one of the best I have had. We have also had chicken, salmon and shrimp hibachi. The cheese wontons and other appetizers are excellent. It's a good show and a good meal. I'm from a coastal area where both seafood and Asian cuisine were extremely plentiful so I think my sushi standards are pretty high (read: I'm an absolute sushi snob lol). I personally don't like cooked rolls (I can get deep fried seafood anywhere around here) so it was a struggle to find a place in Mobile that did raw fish, and did it well. Shiso is the best sushi I've found, even better than the area I'm from. It's always fresh and always high quality. I love the Pink Lady roll and Playboy Bunny roll. Both are so delicate and fresh and at least taste healthy. I'm thrilled every time I get them. That's not to say you can't get fried stuff! My spouse loves the Crimson Tide roll, the fried dumplings, and oh yeah! They have Chinese Dim Sum! Such delightful fried yummies you can get a la cart and try a bunch of things. Everything was delicious and not too greasy. The ambience is clean, fairly upscale with a huge bar, and the staff is always so friendly. I must admit I am jonesing to actually sit down inside instead of just running out with my takeaway. The hibachi section looks so fun! Everything time I'm there I see a table in the back just having a great time. Anything bad? We didn't get our cream buns last time. But tbh they're always so packed I'm surprised my order has never been messed up before. That speaks to how well this place must run. It's absolutely a favorite restaurant in this city. Several chefs, place was full active. The service was bottom, and mostly the sushi was fresh and delicious.!! I way too much starting with an octopus salad and a cucumber, tuna, roll, tuna, sashimi, and another yellowtail fried roll because I didn't wanna leave. Stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon before they closed for lunch. I am honored to have found such amazing sushi, especially in Mobile Alabama. This was excellent. Upon entering, Erica greeted me wit a huge smile and a pleasant "welcome", it was heartwarming, definitely genuine. She escorted me to the sushi bar and wished me a good dining experience. Let me say it was more than good! I started off with the two dishes I have not been able to find in Mobile, O-Toro and Uni, with Ikura as a must have. It was delightful to see that I can get these here and they were beautifully plated and portioned well for the money, it is value for the money. My server Saia greeted me with a smile and took the order and got me started. I commenced building rapport with the sushi Chefs, Hoy, Phet and Sammy. They were all friendly, jovial and professional, you can tell they enjoy what they do and have passion. I enjoyed interacting with them and the dopamine released as I dined was immeasurable. I inquired about recommendations and Hoy recommended Sweet Shrimp, gosh was it a beautiful plate and tasted so good too. Manny recommended Bluefin and that was sooooo gooood! Gosh, I have to say that this is the best sushi in Mobile! The restaurant is new, inviting, open and has clean lines. The bar sits in the middle of the restaurant, which is great for access with seating all around, except for the entrance to the bar. The food is always good. I ordered early in the day but my order was incorrect and I paid more than I should have. The sushi and sashimi combination was ordered with a tuna roll instead of a California roll and they gave me the California. I ordered the snow crab and avocado salad that was $7.95 and was given a crabmeat asparagus roll that was $6.50. When I ordered, it stated that my food would come with a salad and fried rice but I was only given the rice. read more

I've ordered from here 3 times. I absolutely love the tuna sashimi. If I could afford it, I'd eat it daily! I ordered from door dash this week and got the sushi/tempura combo and a side order of tuna roll. The tempura was so oily that it was inedible. I'm talking wring the grease out, greasy. The tuna in the rolls isn't nearly as good as the straight up sashimi. I have to say, this was a very disappointing meal and I couldn't eat most of it. Please do better. read more

The food itself was okay...nothing outstanding, but not too bad. Unfortunately, the overall experience was severely impacted by how uncomfortably hot the restaurant was. It felt stuffy and almost unbearable, which made it hard to relax and enjoy the meal. When we politely asked our server if the air conditioning could be turned down, we were told they had no access to the AC and couldn't do anything about it due to the managers restrictions. While I understand that servers may not control the thermostat, the lack of any attempt to address the issue or offer an alternative made the situation even more frustrating. Good food can't make up for an environment that leaves customers uncomfortable the entire time. With the food being nothing special and feeling like I was minutes away from a heat stroke, I left feeling dissatisfied and I probably won't be coming back soon until the issue with the thermostat can be addressed. read more
