My first appointment at this salon a year ago was great. But since then, they have cancelled 3 of my appointments less than 24 hours in advance. One was cancelled 10 minutes prior to my appointment, as I was parking at the Salon. At another appointment the stylist showed up 20 minutes late. They have a strict 24 cancellation policy in which you may be charged up to 100% of the cost of your service if you cancel, yet they do not have reciprocal respect for their clients' time. If you have a VERY flexible schedule, the actual service is good, but do not count on them to honor your appointment times. read more

I just left there, after having Lana (the proprietor) lighten my hair, and was immediately compelled to jump onto Yelp and sing her praises. Lana is a pro. She's intuitive, knowledgeable, and works hard to learn what the customer wants. I've been suffering from a serious bout of COVID hair and I've been nervous to head into any salon. But after a few minutes inside Salana, any and all nervousness washed away. They make sure that both their customers and staff are safe. Lana is easy to talk to, professional, and so knowledgeable about color. I scheduled a haircut + balayage with Caroline back in May. I didn't HATE the results but I didn't love my hair either. For this appointment, I wanted to trim 1-2 inches of hair, add some layers for texture, and touch up my balayage. Caroline was very professional/nice and the appointment itself (from when I walked into the salon to when I got my hair dried/styled) was great. Unfortunately, I felt that the layers in my hair were very distinct rather than blended (especially at the back of my head). My balayage highlights turned out more honey/caramel than ashy even after toner was applied. I'd gotten balayage hair color several times before and have always asked for an ashy/cooler blonde. Overall, not a reputable business and not worthy of the high cost given the low quality results. After seeing the awesome reviews on Yelp, I was excited to book an appointment for a cut and color with Caroline, feeling confident that my hair would be in capable hands. Caroline was polite and organized throughout the process and helped me to book an appointment, and we texted beforehand and I showed her some photos of the look that I was hoping to achieve (https://www.instagram.com/p/-vVhjQJQbK/), and she suggested balayage. During the appointment, we again talked about the look that I wanted to achieve, and then Caroline applied lightener to my hair, we waited, and then she did the cut and blow dry. When I saw the final result, my initial reaction was that it was very, VERY blonde compared to the pictures that we had discussed, which I told her, and that it was super brassy as opposed to a lighter brown shade. She said that if I wasn't happy with it in a couple of days, I could return and she would re-tone it, which would darken up the color. I ended up texting her and setting up another appointment, where she re-toned it, added some layers to the very basic cut, and said that she could re-tone it again if needed as the toner washed out over time. After a couple of weeks, the new toner had washed out despite using color safe shampoo, and I was very dissatisfied with the way that my hair looked and felt (very damaged) and the overall result and contacted the salon. The salon owner (Lana?) didn't respond to my email whatsoever but instead forwarded it to Caroline, who then offered another toner and a deep conditioning treatment. While that was a nice gesture, at that point, I ultimately didn't feel that the salon was able to deliver the results that I wanted without further damaging my hair. At this point, I'm stuck with a brassy, cheap-looking color and a cut that hasn't gone the distance. In addition, I later realized (during my second appointment) that some of the Yelp reviews were written by friends as opposed to legitimate clients, as one was writing his review out loud while I was in the salon. I ended up paying $280 total including tip and spending 5-6 hours in the salon, and I'm still very dissatisfied with the results that look nothing like what I'd asked for as well as the poor customer service that I received. For the price, I expected a high quality color and cut and didn't think that I'd have to go back more than twice for the subpar results I got. It's not a quality salon, so I'd recommend taking your money elsewhere. read more

I am in love with this place and wish I had found it when I first arrived in San Francisco. Everyone here is so friendly and kind but Lana is actually amazing, she has turned my messy bob and bangs into a sleek and manageable style that gets compliments from strangers in Trader Joe's. You get head massage with your shampoo, a hand massage with your color and the salon in spotless. No gross hair collecting in corners. Now that I have gotten both a haircut and Brazilian Blowout from Lana, I am ready to report I have been the happiest with my hair.... EVER! Admittedly, Lana is one of my soccer teammates, but she rocks regardless. I am half black and have thick, curly/frizzy hair, so naturally I need my mane tamed. She gave me a great cut about a month ago, and did a great job at keeping it long (my hair is just past my shoulders). As for the Brazilian Blowout, it was way quicker than the two Keratin treatments I've had in the past, and more effective. After washing my hair the next night, I was actually able to let it AIR DRY. I woke up in the morning, ran a straightener a few times through it, and it was smooth, straight, and frizz-free in 5 minutes. It was honestly a mixed girl's dream. Lana is awesome!!! Couldn't be happier with the hair cut I got there. She's a great listener, super fun to talk to, and gave me exactly what I asked for. We also talked about what I wanted to do next for my hair and she gave me some great advice. She includes an amazing scalp massage in the haircut price and I also opted to get a split end treatment for an extra $30. During the service she offers you wine, beer, water, tea, or really whatever you want. She's really flexible with appointments and is willing to work around your schedule within reason. Overall the experience was super relaxing and I felt like I was in good hands with Lana.. usually with new hair dressers I'm pretty watchful and tense the majority of the time... females you can understand the stress of finding a new hair dresser/stylist. I cannot reccomend Salana enough. I usually look at getting a haircut as a chore becuase I've avoided it long enough and i can feel the hair whenever a breeze blows past but Lana has made it as painless as possible. First off it feels different. Its friendly warm and not a giant chain which earns extra points for me. Lana the owner is awesome and can cut a mean hair. I can't reccomend this place enough for anyone. San Francisco needs more independent shops like this and I'm glad that Salana and Lana are here for my hair. read more

Salana said to cut and color my daughters hair was $140 after it was done charged me $240 for a 7 year old haircut and color and was totally unwilling to lower the price. when I tried calling her from my cell they would not pick up my calls for several days. On top of that they didn't even color her hair correctly. The first time she washed her hair two days after coloring the color came right out. This place is horrible and would never recommend anyone ever going there. they are totally unprofessional and obviously don't know anything about hair. Solid experience. I'm always a little nervous when I see nothing but 5-star reviews - it seems almost fake. The place isn't fancy, but it definitely gets the job done. Haircut was a bit pricier than I expected (I was told I'd get a discount for adding a cut to a brazillian blowout - granted, I didn't ask how much, but I was surprised by the price tag). I felt like I got a little pressured into buying products at the end. I might be back, or I might scan the daily deal sites once more for my next round. I went to Lana yesterday for a haircut + color. I was a little hesitant to ask for color for two reasons. 1. I've never colored my hair before. 2. I've never been to the salon before. Tiana, was able to fix my hair after I had gotten a horrible ombre from a very nice salon here in SF earlier on in the week. She took the time to sit down with me and show me what colors she'd be putting in beforehand and walked me through what it would look like.
