Lex was my stylist today and to sum up: IT'S THE MAGIC OF THE PROFESSIONAL STYLIST!! I called yesterday and got in today for a cut and highlights. Amazing. Lex is meticulous which I really appreciate. Since I moved to Reno 6 years ago I have had some truly slam-bam-thank-you-mam 15 minute haircuts. I have thin fine hair and I know it can be done quickly but I love knowing a stylist is looking at my hair and treating me and hearing what I want. I SO wish I could post a pic of my new 'do but have not been able to take a pic that does not include my old fat face which is a not good recommendation for anyone. She did not make me look or feel like an old lady -thanks for that- but still gave me a great color and trim. This is by far the best salon in Northern Nevada. It's location is easy to find, right along the beautiful river downtown. The aesthetic inside is gorgeous! Was recommended to this place end of last year and made an appointment for a hair dye. They quoted me $300 and when I took her in they called me 4 hours later that it's probably going to be $300 more. During 8 hours the stylist only bleached half her hair and burned it really bad. I was very upset that that's all they had done in 8 so I went and picked my daughter up. They charged me 300 for bleaching half her hair so I paid and called several times to talk to the manager and left voicemails and never got a call back. I wrote a review on google and i recently looked it up and noticed that review was deleted off of google. We had to take her to a different saloon that was great to take her in last minute and save her hair. read more

Went to Outsiders on the recommendation of a barber shop that did not have availability that day. Boy am I glad I did. I got a much needed covid 19 haircut and the place was spotless and clearly took the health of customers and stylists very seriously; I felt very safe throughout. Made a last-minute appointment here the other day, as I was craving a cleanup of my current haircut (growing out an asymmetrical bob) and felt like trying something new. I was able to book an appointment on their website for the next day, so I nabbed it. Masks are required right now, as is washing your hands prior to sitting down, which is totally fair, as the stylists do the same. Zak asked me a bunch of questions first to get an idea of what kind of cut/style I was looking for. He was very attentive to my requests, but also used his own experience and judgment to give me a fresh, chic cut. I ended up getting a short A-line cut and I love it! Regulations are preventing stylists from using blow dryers right now, which makes styling afterwards somewhat tricky. However, Zak encouraged me to please contact him if I felt like anything needed tweaking in the next few days! The ambience in the salon, from all the plants, to the cozy waiting area, and on-point music selection, make this little salon very inviting. I'm not sure if I have the right to review a hair salon since I only get my hair cut every 2 years +/-. But the sign said "Walkens Welcome." So I had time to kill I figured why not. They look busy but they got me in right away. Jessica (the little one --she said it) cleaned up her space and we got started. She cut a substantial amount of my hair off. She told me if I needed an adjustment just to give her a buzz. Odd thing about her set up is there's no mirror. It was enjoyable to watch the moon come out while I was getting my hair did. She really listened to what I had to say and gave me a good cut with my vague description of what I wanted. Everyone in the salon was very friendly. I was a bit concerned that it might be a hipster joint but it felt like everyone IS WELCOME! It's not gonna change my hair cutting schedule but now I know where to go when I'm feeling like a hair cut. read more

I had a very positive experience here. On time, friendly, and the interior made me feel at home. I had over 10 years of length cut so I experienced a drastic change. I wouldn't say I was overwhelmed with joy over my cut but I understand it takes a while to settle into a new style . As far as technique and precision Jen was very good. This place is a hell hole of unprofessional stylists if you can even call them that. My experience was a mess of scheduling and rescheduling on there part. They CHARGED me $179.00 I canceled before my appointment that outsiders rescheduled over a text message. I have NO hair cut but got charged for more that one. DON'T let them take your card information and fool you by saying it's for security on the appointment because they will OVER charge you for them rescheduling the appointment. Disappointed and truly in shock by the looks of other bad reviews I got off easy some people got a bad cut and got charged $800. If I could put a half start I would. read more

After a long time searching for salon since moving from LA to Reno. I hopped onto yelp scrolling through a plethora of salons and stumbled on some awesome pictures from the Outsiders salon. I decided to make an appointment thinking, "Why not? They look like they know what they're doing". I've never been one to have a steady salon that I'd go to to get my hair done. I'd often bounce from one stylist to another not really caring to have a steady one with a 50/50 chance of getting a "decent" hair cut. My hair is super long, heavy and thick, and I usually get over charged and the experience is often mediocre at best. The chance I took on going to Outsiders was awesome! Super chill atmosphere, clean, and friendly staff. I had Zakary as my stylist. He is by far the sweetest and most attentive stylist I have had the luck to have as MY CHANCE stylist! I can tell he cared about what he does and loved his career. I have long thick hair and he did an amazing job! His patience and artistry brought my heavy flat hair back to bouncy fun life! I can't wait to get my hair balayaged by him! This is now my go to salon! read more

This was my second visit to this salon. The first visit a barber did my hair and did such a great job so I call to get my hair colored and request the barber but was told he can only color male and not female. So I was giving an appointment for 10/24/22 at 10am with a stylists named Alexia I think, So I arrive and i sit in her set and tell her I want the color copper and she proceeds to tell me she don't have time for me. She was very dismissive which lead me to believe it was simple because of my race. Then she colors my roots and sends me on my way. She tell me to make another appointment for when she has time. I'm at this point totally confused because when I made this appointment I said I wanted color of full head so it she didn't have time why make the appointment? Love my haircut and the easy scheduling. The vibe of the salon was relaxed and friendly. Meagan was my stylist and she was very friendly and helpful. I went in wanting to make a big change but with only a vague idea of what I wanted (which I'm sure hair stylists love ) and she was cool about it and knew what would work for my hair. She seemed very skilled and I would definitely recommend. Prices aren't the absolute cheapest, but definitely reasonable. I feel really bad I went x2, x3 because the same guy couldn't cut hair. He tried x2 . Had to have another nice gal re-cut my hair very well. HAPPY, so I went to make another appointment for the lady, but Zac answered and I felt bad and made an appointment with him. He still didn't cut my hair that well 1 strand at a time. Then I had green hair highlights $230.00. I'm really not a bitchy person but wasn't treated that great and supercuts could have done better and could have gotten a beverage way before the wind outside embarrassed me blowing my foiled highlights around. This is a peaceful ritual Nellie has crafted from start to finish, involving the choosing of a rock and roll tarot card. The artist you pick she then offers to play on Spotify, as you dive into the theme and wisdom of this artist together. You then choose a stone that calls to you, each a different color of the chakra system, and she will place it on that chakra during your treatment. All of this is happening in her new, beautiful salon location next to the Truckee River. The salon is closed to the public on Tuesdays and reserved specifically for those wanting a bit of extra care with personalized reiki hair ritual. It's truly a time to relax and let go. I get so relaxed from reiki I even tend to shed a tear or two as I release what ever it is I've held onto. Nellie then completes your styling by brushing your freshly trimmed locks with a crystal comb. What a beautifully curated experience. I am so proud of Nellie for finding her unique way to pour her passion into her projects. I decided to be spontaneous and get my hair colored since Ive never added color to it. I asked for a balayage. The pictures on the top show what I was going for and the pictures on the bottom is what the hairstylist did to it. I even tipped her in hopes that she would see me the next day to fix it, since I was being rushed out because she had another appointment. After she was done she asked me if I liked it and I stared to her that it was not the color I have in mind. It was still too brassy/copper colored. Jenn, the hairstylist told me to wear it for a few days and to call her back if I needed it adjusted. I contacted her the next day because my hair looked terrible in all forms of lighting. In addition, I had more time to inspect it and I noticed that there was no blending done to it. It looks like my roots were growing out. I asked her if she will ever able to blend then, then she goes on to lecture me about what balayage is and that this is "what I asked for". I'm sorry but I don't remember the last time I asked for a a hairstyle that resembles the roots needing to be touched up, but she insisted "that's what a balayage is". I then requested that she would refund me the service and keep the $20 tip for the product she used. She refused and only wanted to give me half of the $95 that I paid, this is after I pleaded with her several times. I never received the refund she stated she would return. Jenn did offer to fix the work she did on my hair, but due to her way of handling the situation I did not feel comfortable returning to her. Like I mentioned, she began to make me feel like I had done something wrong and that I didn't know what I wanted originally. It made me feel that she thought I was inadequate in understanding what I wanted with my hair. Now I have to take the money that I'm hoping to get back to color correct which will damage my hair even more. Do not go to see this stylist. I'm disappointed in the end results and the fact that I have to deal with fixing this mess. Would you let the same person touch your hair after this and having her lecture you about what you "asked" for? Overall, the staff in this salon is friendly, but I think I got an inexperienced employee and bad luck. Additional note added 3/25/16: The owner Nellie has commented below and states that it is a "shame" that I didn't go back to the hairstylist, but because of the lack of customer service skills and her way of making me feel guilty for bringing up these issues, I did not feel comfortable with her working on my hair anymore. Jenn never explained the process of coloring and what she was doing. In the end of the day she bleached my hair and toned it but didn't add color, which is what I asked for. I guess she wanted to keep half of my money because I used so much of her product lol. My hair is fixed now thanks to another stylist! So in the end that is all that matters. Lesson learned, I will do more research in the future and ask to see previous work from that stylist. In addition, some of Jenn's friends have been harassing me on Yelp and messaging me negative notes. Pretty immature if you ask me.... read more

Had an appointment today: I came in feeling insecure about my hair because it had started to fade into a weird color. However, Meagan was ready to help and I left feeling like whole new person. She did a wonderful job cutting (almost 10in!!) and dyeing my hair. The place is very cute and has a lot natural lighting (which I think helps if you're dyeing your hair). I've been in Reno on and off for the past eight years and I never found a salon that does ethnic hair (I'm a mixed Black and Latina woman). Based on the great Yelp reviews, I scheduled an appointment with Nellie. She was warm and friendly and understood that I wanted a certain kind of ombre style for my hair. Nellie worked her magic and gave me the most gorgeous cut and color. Plus, she had no trouble with my thick curls. The salon was so relaxing and Nellie and I chatted as if we were friends. Super clean and welcoming environment. Who ever made the playlist that was playing during my visit has great taste. The Outsiders is located next to a local coffee shop which made the location prime. Location is located behind the Farmers Insurance building. Jessica was absolutely a pleasure to be with. From the start, she made me feel welcomed by acknowledging what I wanted for my hair cut and asking questions to ensure we were both on the same page. Every step, she walked me through since I was going to start rocking my curls after cutting almost a foot of hair off. She showed me which products she was using in my hair and taught me how to manage and style my curls. From showing me which products go use, teaching me about different serums, and reccomend deep conditioning treatments I left confident that I would be able to manage and style my curls on my own. She as well gave me her business card and told me to call her if I had any trouble with my curls. Very natural flowing conversation. I felt like I had known Jessica prior to my service. read more

This would have been a 5 star review my wife got her hair done and it looks great zero complaints there but to sit there and change the price three different times because they miss quoted time frames and product needed is ridiculous to go from $180 to $400 is ludicrous excellent hair cut and hair color very poor customer service I work in the service industry and if I quote a client something and don't tell them upfront hey by the way there's a possibility it could be more then I don't charge them more however unforeseen circumstances are out of everyone's control your gonna tell me a professional hair salon doesn't know how much product they are going to use on someone's hair is going to be? Until they are half way through and then it's oh by the way it's going to be this much more then this much more and so forth and so on if they would have been upfront about the cost to begin with then this for sure would have been a 5 star review and no it's not about the money it's the principle behind how she was treated and forced to spend more money knowing she was going to because you had already started working on her hair read more

This is my favorite Salon in town. Lucky was who did my hair and then my makeup for the zombie crawl and she is AMAZING!!! Not only did she give me the hair color I wanted but she rocked the shit out of my zombie makeup. When you walk into the salon everyone is smiling and makes you feel like you are not just some dumb customer. I've walked into some salons where they all stare at you like you just ruined their day not here! The owner is a very friendly as well as the other staff!!
