Look at my last review two years ago. It was five stars. We went yesterday and the food quality has gone way down. The fries were homemade but soggy. The tater tots were not hot and not tasty, not like when we were there two two years ago. The burger wasn't even hot enough to melt the cheese. The water was pink. Evidently the punch up above the water was leaking into the water. That needs fixing. They used to have hot, fresh, crinkle fries, but not now. They also gave you a generous quantity of tater tots, but that's gone down too. The white door in the seating area has black greasy large marks all over it, and it needs a fresh coat of paint or at least a good cleaning. I love Salas and have been coming here since I was a kid. I get the junior cheeseburger and share the jumbo fries with my family because they are huge. They never get my order wrong either which I appreciate because whenever I ask for no onions at other places they always get it wrong. I found Salas Better Burger to be overrated by enthusiastic fans. The burger was good but comparable to What-A-Burger in size and taste. The patty is much thinner than the pictures on the menu suggest. The other ingredients and bun were very good. So while the burger IS good, it is not gourmet nor exceptional, but fairly normal for fast food. The regular fries were a disappointment, substandard and soggy. If I return I will try the curly fries or tater tots and hope they're better. Other reviewers seem to like those. The restaurant is a local business with a 37 year history. They have many loyal local fans. The building may not have been updated in all those years. It doesn't have any curb appeal. If I were the owner and wanted to continue at this location I would add a couple of potted plants and antiques and take advantage of the small town mom and pop shop feel. The employee who took my order was friendly and competent. Based on my visit, you should be prepared to wait a while for your meal to be prepared. The drink station had typical soda pop selections, and iced tea made from concentrate (not fresh brewed). The outdoor seating is one picnic table right outside the front door under a roof (you'll be thankful for that as the Summer heat is exceptionally hot). The indoor dining air conditioned room has two sections: there is an additional room in the back painted pink. I do believe in supporting local businesses, so I will return. I thought Salas Better Burger was a pretty good place to have lunch. The burger is grilled, the tater tots were crispy, and the jalapeño bombers delightful. I like simple burgers: meat, bun, mustard, onion, and jalapeños. That's what we got here. Note: simple doesn't equal bad. Personally, I don't think one has to reinvent a hamburger to make it taste good; It's something that has worked well for a long time. The menu is straight-forward and reasonably priced. Everything is a la cart like In-n-Out which is awesome. I'd highly recommend this place to anyone in the area. At SBB they serve burgers and not much else, though it's not necessarily a bad thing - speciality usually produces a superior product. Located South of the train tracks in downtown Del Rio, this burger joint is as understated as you can get - a small little building on the corner with some booths inside and some tables outside; it possesses that greasy atmosphere that lets you know that all diets need to abandon all hope once passing through the door. Upon ordering one of their titular "better burgers", I was presented with a thin, flat patty of no more than 2-3 oz on a plain white bun. The meat was juicy and just a little crispy around the edges - a very nice thing, indeed. Topping the burger was a couple of roma tomato slices and chopped lettuce and onions. A slice of American cheese also adorned my bun. For my side I enjoyed what was possibly the crunchiest onion rings I have ever put in my mouth. I doubt they were homemade, but at the very least they were well-cooked. I wanted to like SBB more than I did - several recommendations from friends combined with the local atmosphere of downtown Del Rio made me excited to find another great local eatery, but when it comes down to it, the product was very ordinary - aside from the adept use of the grill, the burger was more similar to what I would expect to get at a cookout, not a restaurant, right on down to the Wal-Mart napkins they put into your take-out bag. I feel previous reviews were a bit harsh. I'm a del rio native and everytime I'm in town I stop by. The burgers are not extraordinary but they are of the freshest ingredients. I came with some of the pickiest eaters and they raved about how great the food was. My favevorite are the fries, they are a fried goodness with mashed potato insides..(drools).
