Beverages: (& The Nice Thing About It Is, It's Not Just Coffee- But Tea & Swiss Miss Options)- For A Hospital, I'll Take It

What you don't want from a hospital is inadequate service from check-in to discharge, unprofessional behavior, poor communication, etc. Now what you DO want from a hospital is whole-person care, individual needs, communication, responsiveness, respectful staff, cleanliness and of course, (a)highly skilled doctor(s). My daughter got the last-mentioned and much more. Months prior to my daughter getting her surgery, she did tons of research. And locating a doctor who's not only a 'female doctor'- but one who's a die-hard specialist in her own right, was at my daughter's top of the list. My daughter lucked out when she met her surgeon who addressed her many questions, her needs and turned out to be the most professional and attentive. Located less than an hour from downtown Portland, Salem Hospital provided a positive experience, with friendly and helpful nurses and crystal clear communication when my daughter's checked herself in before 6am on the day of her surgery. The anesthesiologist asked all the necessary questions before surgery. I was a hot mess while I waited for my daughter because she'd be in the operating room for several hours. What made my nerves ease drastically were the constant text message updates throughout her surgery. Without those, I would've been a bigger mess. Salem Hospital feels safe, is clean, check-in was a breeze, waiting room is comfortable, a tv played quietly and there's a hot beverage station. Nurses turned out to be fantastic. My daughter searched for the best surgeon and she got it. As for me, Salem Hospital provided respect, care and delivered the best results at that moment pre, during and post surgery.

Ask the Community - Salem Hospital

My mother is at Salem Hospital after having a stroke. I believe there is some place affiliated with the hospital that provides low-cost lodging. Is anyone aware of such a place?

I would try to ask the staff or a patient advocate at the hospital. So sorry about your mom! Ooops! This was years ago!.

But beware, you have to get through the hostile, insulting receptionists to get anything. They recently switched to a different MyChart instance, but didn't tell us. They just cancelled the appointment in the old MyChart. When I called to ask what happened, I was told my mother was a "no show" and they would have set her up in the new instance if she had come in. I asked, "How would we have known to show up to an appointment you had cancelled?" The receptionist caught a huge attitude with me. She said, "I don't know what to tell you" and "What do you expect me to do about it?" I said this is literally your job. I told her some compassion and understanding would have gone a long way, and she said "I'm sitting here listening to you aren't I?" She never once asked if my mom required an urgent appointment (she did) and offered me an appointment 6 weeks out. I'm sure she thought she was really clever sticking it to an 82-year-old woman with advanced congestive heart failure. May your mother suffer a similar fate, Natalie. I filed a complaint and someone competent called me back and got my mom in the following Monday. We arrived and the receptionist working was so consumed telling another receptionist about her Jerry-Springer-show-worthy family and relationship drama, she completely forgot we were sitting there. Again, the actual care is good, fine, great. But they're really scraping the bottom of the Salem trailer parks for staff.

I called and told his assistance that I wanted an echo to compare to the one I had at OHSU in 2023. I also wanted him to check my blood, which he never ordered!! He is hard to understand. He is older and I think with my experience with cardiologist, he is BURNED out! I will never go back to him. Luckily when I went to this last appointment he was in ER surgery and I was seen by Andre PA. HE ordered all blood work. He took his time with me explaining everything. He said he didn't know why I was on so much meds. He took me off 2 of my water pills, 1 of my potassium pills, a heart med I didn't need to be on. Then told me about a specialist that comes from St V. Heart failure clinic in Portland once a month. Referred me to him. Now I've had an echo, right heartcath and gene testing, pulmonary testing and put in the correct heart meds!! Dr. Westerdahl from Portland is in the office once a month and is BY FAR much better than that old Dr. Kamineni. Highly recommend.

Well, except they did knock me out, and I had to spend one night in the hospital. But you know, not as bad as a root canal at the dentist! There was no pain. Every visit with him has been a challenge. He's rude, walks out in the middle of me answering his questions, was incompetent in removing my internal heart monitor, refuses to discuss anything other than plant-based eating and blames everything going on with my heart on my "regular diet" and my weight... I could go on but I think that's enough. My PCP discovered a heart murmur a year ago and asked that I see Dr. Garg to find out what was going on. After an ultrasound verified the murmur, Dr. Garg was ruder than he's ever been and I wrote to the Oregon Clinic to complain. When it recently came time for the annual followup, an appointment was made for me, without my knowledge, with a PA that I had never met. She was polite and tried to be helpful but her specialty is "gerontology" not "cardiology" - I have no idea why I was shuffled off to an underling who did not have any understanding of my heart history. I will be finding a different cardiologist before my next checkup comes around.
