My son in law introduced me to Salem Prime Cuts a couple years ago and it has become a go to when I come to the east coast. It is a sandwich stop and butcher shop all rolled into one. The staff is helpful and really listens to what you are asking on your way to an amazing sandwich or great cut of meat. I have not really paid attention to see if there is somewhere to sit eat there. My first experience we ate on the hood of our car. I have had several sandwiches, from breakfast(amazing) to several of the hot grinders, and the cold ones. I have never been disappointed. The grinder's are so delicious and awesome. We have shopped for meat here also. Their butchers are knowledgeable and will cut the meat you ask for. Lots of stuff to buy to go with your meal! I went in today to grab lunch and some snacks, as well as some drinks for the couple days coming up. Nothing too large but I had both arms full when I walked up to the register. Looked around for about 15 minutes. When I was up at register I found out they were not taking card right now, which was confusing because there was no signage, no people working there telling you that the most common way of paying nowadays isn't gonna work. So I had to go put everything back and wasted 30+ minutes of my time going there. Normally I would recommend going here. They have some good stuff for parties or for snacking and lots of meat choices, but their service today was very lack luster, and it definitely put a damper on my plans. Working in retail I would just say do better. I was planning on spending over 50 dollars there just to be turned away because nobody wanted to tell the customers what's going on in the store. A lady behind me also was going to have to leave because of the lack of information given. Some people don't have a lot of time to do things, and now they might not even be able to go buy food at all. Very disappointed. read more

Had a craving for a grinder from Salem Prime Cuts and ordered a large spicy Italian. I added onions & hot peppers bringing the price up to $20.40. A lot of $$ for a sub but based on past experiences I figured it would be worth the $ and the 1/2 an hour drive. When I got home and started to eat the grinder I was extremely disappointed to discover that the bread was very stale! Meat and vegetables were ok but the bread was not good at all. UPDATE: I called and spoke with the manager, she said the bread is delivered daily and wasn't stale, she said that's how their bread is supposed to be. Having had Salem Prime Cuts grinders in the past , I don't ever recall the bread being like how it was but without me asking for a refund she offered. Been going there for more years than I can remember. Love this place!! Quality of meat is top notch. They also have butchers that will come out and answer question and suggest what cut of meat is best for your dinner. They will also cut a piece of meat the way you need ! Find that at your local grocery store!!! Oh!! And try their grinders! My husband and I shared one and had a hard time finishing it. Love this butcher shop. It is so nice to have an old fashion butcher shop where you can get meats that are cut within the store and you know are fresh. They had such a great selection of meats that were local or meats that were prepared and kind of unusual. They also had produce and some dry goods that you could get. But we had stopped at another local store and someone recommended this butcher shop to go to for sandwiches. We had an Italian grinder that was so full of meat that Mike and I couldn't finish a large grinder together. We enjoyed it with some chips and Mike had some cream soda which we got at the store and it was a great lunch. We actually took it to a brewery with us and drink some beer sitting in the truck while enjoying a sandwich. It's a fun area also to find lots of things to do. The sandwich though has so much meat that I used some that evening to add to my salad while we were camping. I use cheese and meats and we had a great antipasto and still a full sandwich left. I would definitely give a 4 1/2 """"" except for the fact that they refuse to process Deer. Several years ago they processed a Buck for me and did a fantastic job! I don't know why they refuse to process deer. Its a lot of work to Gut and drag a deer load it in the vehicle, obtain a DEEP Confirmation #, affix it to the deer along with permit, I was lucky the land owner has a walk in refrigerator so I wasn't in a rush thank God I found Monson Quality meats in Massachusetts about 1 1/2 hrs away. Would i have preferred a 15 min ride to Salem Connecticut? You bet! Hopefully next year if I'm lucky enough to get a deer. Salem prime cuts has a great grinder selection, wonderful cuts of meat, poultry, I just wished they would go back to process Deers again. Monster grinders (subs), but the service leaves A LOT to be desired at the deli counter. It was obvious we were tourists as I was taking pics for Yelp all over the place, so yeah, the old lady working the deli counter literally just kept talking to some local dude for like 5 minutes as I just stood there waiting to order. I was literally staring at her the entire time, but I'm not rude, so I didn't interrupt. I should have. Finally, the local dude said to her, "well...I think you should take this man's order. He's been very patient." So...she took my order...finally...no smile, no nothing, and of course when I get the grinder packaging open to eat it ten minutes later, it's missing ingredients I ordered but was charged for. Thanks lady! A smile, courteous and prompt service, and including all ordered ingredients on my sub changes my whole experience...might want to work on that folks! This trip, totally unimpressed. Everything I've tried here was out of this world. I've tried the edible cookie dough, the banana pudding, and the carrot cake muffin. All delicious but the banana pudding was exceptional. My husband tried a sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwich and loved it. The inside of this place is super cute, and they sell such a wide variety of items. So, yes, these sandwiches are filled with loads of meat. Great, but it's now so overdone that there's no way to hold it like a grinder/sub sandwich, and you now need to treat it like an open-faced hotdog bun. Light onion, as requested, was completely ignored for overwhelming amounts of onion. My mom's pastrami, while coming cold and untoasted as requested, was horrible too. Her "dry" pastrami grinder ended up with a ridiculous amount of mustard, and soggy with oil and vinegar. Only my dad's grinder, an Italian cold cut combo, came perfect. I'm so mad that I will never order sandwiches from here ever again. There's a way to put plenty of meat on a sub, but this is stupid. Way to ruin a meal. A complete waste of $30. read more

It was my first time going there, I must say the the butcher did everything I asked him cut my meat like how I needed to be cut I'll give them a 10 out of 10 where customer relations is concerned and I'll definitely be visiting there again hey the patrons made me feel kind of uncomfortable, I recommend them for Quality meats and excellent customer service, the place is small but to me it's all about the quality I had to drive over 20 minutes to get there but it was worth to drive. read more

I ordered a meatball grinder. Haven't had one in a while, they used to be so good. Today I did not like the grinder at all. The meatballs are more like meat paste. No definable shape, like they're made with an over abundance of bread and not much meat. there's almost no sauce. The flavor is overly garlicky. Bordering on unpleasant. After I got the grinder I noticed how dirty the kitchen area is. The ceilings are black with grease and soil. I never thought I'd say, go to Subway for a better meatball grinder. So sad. read more

All good things come to a end ! This place must have changed hands. Boars head has taken over the deli . All the wonderful house stuff is gone. Smoked bacon , chops and wings gone from deli case. Ordered the Turkey bacon famous and the great smoked house bacon gone ! Also from $11 to $19 for a very light grinder makes gas seem cheap. Meats now all in vacuum packed. If you want good customer service, you won't find it here. You can order the same grinder here 4 days in a row and get it made differently every time. After ordering meatless grinders here for several years, I received one loaded with hot peppers. I immediately informed them and all they EVER answered me is with a simple, "on the meatless grinder?" I expected them to offer to remake the grinder. They didn't. Even after removing the hot peppers, the juice from the peppers made the grinder inedible for me. I paid for something I couldn't eat. I used to buy 6-8 grinders a week there. Because of their non-caring attitude, I now buy NONE. read more

Bought 6 pounds of ribs yesterday (7/30/21) to smoke today. Put them in the fridge as soon as I got home. Took them out this morning to apply the rub and every single piece is rotten! Not just a "maybe it was on it's way out anyway" bad, but a "this meat just wasn't fresh to begin with" bad. It looks like they knew it was bad, flipped it over so it couldn't be seen or smelled due to pre-packaging. read more

I went back the next day and was told they didn't have any and to come back the next day again. Of course I went back and guess what? Got it and was charged 10 times the price. Of course I bought it because I wanted to treat friends to Texas style barbeque. Yes, I was visiting from Texas. I know people in CT have no clue what skirt steak is (fajita meat people). I really, really wanted to like Salem Prime Cuts. Pork cutlets are notoriously hard to find. So, when I called them, and he said he could cut them, I was ecstatic. My grandfather used to buy them at a local Rocky Hill butcher every week, and I hadn't had them in ages. My girlfriend stopped in to get some only ten or fifteen minutes after I called. Two pounds of pork cutlets turned out to be two pounds of thinly sliced pork chops. I wouldn't pay $3/pound for pork chops, let alone nearly $6/pound. It probably isn't bad meat (I don't like pork chops, so I won't find out) --- it just isn't at all what I wanted. Thankfully, she picked up a few other things, including steak wrapped sausage. It probably wasn't representative of the quality of their meats either, but it wasn't a great experience on a number of levels. First, though nicely packaged, the steak was quite tough. But, far more importantly, sausage and steak cook at different temperatures. In order to ensure the sausage wrapped within the steak was cooked, there was really no option other than to overcook the steak. Great idea that sounds yummy but just doesn't work in practice. I'd like to go back and have a good experience. I read on Yelp that they have some good ice cream and good quality meat, so maybe we'll be back, and we can re-review. But, the lack of expertise in meats surprises me. read more

She wanted to get some grinders to throw into the cooler, only one problem, mine didn't make it to the cooler. The grinders are STUFFED with meat and are extremely fresh, made to order. A friend highly recommended this place as he had stocked up during the pandemic. I was in the area and decided to try. I'm always looking for a great place to get meats that isn't a chain. This place was quite the disappointment!! Walked in and the closest employee (who is working the register) just stares at me and doesn't say a word. I nod and start looking around. There weren't a lot of steaks, but what they had looked horrible. They were all half or a quarter gray. Then I went to the bacon and noticed that ALL of the Smithfield bacon said "Best by 7/31" not sell buy, but best by. Well today is 8/14!!! Gross!!! That did it for me. I told the checkout guy what I noticed and I said no thanks, nothing here I want. Then left. I was so surprised what poor quality the food was. I will not be going back. read more

Heavy selection of all kinds of meats from all kinds of animals! Most of it fresh but they also had a frozen selection of prepared meats (think turkey patties). They also have a legitimate deli section with grinders, they looked legit but we didn't try them. Mixed in with this they have a local selection of a variety of products to include salsas, kettle corn, etc. Don't think you are coming here for above and beyond friendly customer service (unless you are a regular) or a selection that rivals Whole Foods.
