Walt's has never let me down. I consume their roast beef sandwich on a daily basis during the week, it never misses. On Monday's and Friday's they have prime rib day, man let me tell ya. Went to Walt's Market as it was nearby from where we were having lunch. Very glad I did. Old school market that opened in 1960. Still has that old school feel. The highlight was the meat counter. Walt's son Paul is in charge now and he was very knowledgeable cutting meat. I got a beautiful cut of pork shoulder to make pulled pork for Superbowl Sunday. The pork was delicious. The store has a variety of specialty products like pastas, ice cream, breads, etc. to try out. The prices are a little higher than most places but definitely worth it, in my opinion. read more

We ordered Roast Beef Subs today 11/9/22 and they were not good. The bread was not good and the sandwich was bland. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THE WEBSITE IS INFECTED WITH A VIRUS. I advised two of the employees, one a manager and they stated that they don't use the website because of the virus. Once is enough, but twice is a behavior. Watch out for the prices what they have advertised is not what they charge you. There is a sign that market prices may vary, however there are only specific items listed as m/p. When they handed me my meat that wasn't a m/p meat they had upped the price (the first guy put a price lower then the guy whispered to him to put a higher price) when I got the meat before leaving I mentioned the incorrect price and they replaced it. They then stated this isn't stop and shop. This place isn't stop and shop because stop and shop puts a price on it that's accurate and they didn't. I wanted to come here because a very famous local resident, the late, great Katherine Hepburn used to come here and I recall reading an interview once where she raved about the cookies and brownies at Walt's. Apparently it is a family-run business and they have been here for years and the high ratings are completely justified. Friend and I were here day-tripping and we picked up soup and sandwiches for our lunch which we noshed on at Old Saybrook Point, under the sunny skies, looking out over Long Island Sound and watching the swans fly by. We both had their chicken and stuffing sandwich which was phenomenal. I had a hard time finishing it and my friend ate only half of her's and took the rest home. My lobster bisque with shrimp was fantastic. If I had known Walt's soups were so good, I would have ordered an additional large container to take home for dinner. My friend ordered their cream of chicken soup and she said it was easily one of the best soups she's ever had. Prices may seem a little high but the portions here are ridiculous. They give you enough for 2 meals instead of one. Unfortunately they didn't have any of those famous brownies or cookies when we came in since it was a Sunday. I don't have much of a choice now except to marry rich so I can live in Old Saybrook, go antique hunting, hang out at the beach and get my picnic foods at Walt's. read more

Consistently surprised by how unsanitary this place is and how the health department let's them operate. Here's a list: Raw products next to cooked, cooked items cooling on deli case uncovered from people and employees spit, meat balls and sausage are medium rare in the hot case, the hot case isn't hot, soup left out for hours then packaged to sell, smoked meats cooked medium, employees dont wash their hands after touching raw meat or wiping their nose, employees drinking beer behind the building, baked goods arent covered from sneezing or other customers touching them, and their refrigerators are always broken. This place is a breeding ground for food borne illnesses. On top of all the unhealthy practices they usually scree up your order. The corn chowder was tasty and well seasoned as well. My lunch came to $14 and change. Overall, it was a pretty good deal for the quality and quantity of the food. This small business is adorable. The food features unpretentious and classic flavors. The ingredients are fresh, and each component stood out appropriately. The sandwiches are really great lunch options. It has a great old-school feel and Katherine Hepburn used to shop there when she was on vacation. They make delicious sandwiches (made to order) in the deli at the back of the store. They used quality ingredients and were very fresh. Totally scrummy. -1 star because the service was a little funky. The deli dudes took orders for 3 sandwiches and slightly botched all three. I have tried pretty much every place from Madison to Groton, and no one makes a better sandwich around here than Walt's. It's a welcome break from the ubiquitous fried food shacks on the one hand and the stale eatery aesthetic on the other, which together describes most places in the area. Walt's is decidedly retro. It reminds me of the corner grocery stores of my childhood in the 1970s, but with just a hint of hipster food culture. The groceries are kind of pricey, ranging from basic to a little Brooklyn. The sandwiches and butcher are quality and reasonable. I'd call it all-American with a friendly male vibe. It's not the place for ciabatta, but they have one of the best roast beef sandwiches I've had. Bacon, lettuce, tomato and egg salad salad? Yep. You want super cheap and retro? Their ham special is a generous basic sub/grinder for 2, for less than 4 bucks. Butcher prices are comparable to the local grocery stores, maybe 10 cents a pound more, but the quality is better, and they are more than happy to happy to cut and tie and order and do all the things that butchers used to do. Again, nothing fancy. No dry-aged beef. But quality. No shtick. No silly names for the sandwiches. No tourist trapisms. And perhaps best of all, they seem like good people. Tender lean deli meat cooked in store. No boar's head meat. Butcher there as well. The same staff does the butcher section that does the deli section which I found to make the wait longer. It literally took the person serving me 20 mins for 3 different deli meats and they were small portions, everyone seemed to operate at this speed. It's ok ($10.50) for a turkey sandwich w lettuce onion and cheese on a pretzel roll and a water. The "everyday special" of ham turkey and cheese on a 6" sub is $3.49, so I am not sure what's up.
