I popped into Midnight Oil on a recent business trip to Walla Walla, looking to kill some time. The…read moreplace is stocked top to bottom with handmade soaps, lotions, bath bombs, and more. I would call the shop "whimsical." Many of the soaps looked like a glitter-happy five-year-old had made them. I was more interested in the bath bombs, although I usually hate baths (now who's the five-year-old?), just because they smelled so good (and because it was a tiny store and I felt pressured to purchase SOMEthing). Each were about $5 apiece, except for the malformed leftovers, which were $1 each. Bath bombs just disintegrate in water anyway, so I didn't really care what my bombs looked like. I picked up a lavender leftover and a normal lemongrass/coconut. There were some less obvious scents as well, like "Mystery." The woman who ran the shop (who I assumed to be the owner since there were pictures of her and her goats all over) chatted merrily at me as I shopped. I prefer to be left alone when I browse, but this shop is basically a closet so it was impossible to escape and I was forced to make small talk. The small talk was about goats, though, so it was better than most. However, when I checked out, she abruptly asked whether I had cash. I didn't. She sighed loudly and said, "It costs a fortune," as she ran my card. Gee, I'm sorry I spent money in your store. If someone wants a minimum amount spent to run a card, she should post a sign saying as much.

I really enjoyed the little shop, great smells, I bought an awesome massage oil, and bath soaps…read more Owner was there, everything is handmade by her. Shop was adorable.

I booked online and received an email confirmation. Unfortunately, the owner explained that, yes, they had received my request, but they were no longer using the online system through which I booked. So somehow that meant I didn't have an appointment. The owner said she had no way of contacting me to cancel (even though if you google my name my email address and phone number pop up). One would think they might disable an online booking service they don't use? Or honor appointments if they know confirmations have been sent? Or make a simple concession like, "unfortunately we can't give you the hour and a half you booked, but you're fifteen minutes early - I could give you a quick trim..." Like I said, poor customer service. I would also like to apologize to the owner. As I walked away I said "now I know why you've got zero stars on Yelp" (a reference to a review I read where someone wished they could give zero stars). That was rude of me and unnecessary. This is the forum to air grievances, not saying nasty things in a parking lot.

The red I chose turned out gorgeous although sloppy, red all over my face, ears, neck that still hasn't come off. When i got back to our hotel, I realized one side of my hair was about half an inch longer on one side than the other. (Never had this happen back home but I'm not usually an angry person and thankfully still in town decided to go back to have them fix it) I go back and the stylist I had was off for the day so someone else fixed it, no charge as it should be. Get back to my hotel for a SECOND TIME. It is now shorter on the other side. I will wait until I get back home to get it fixed correctly rather than them continuing to hack at it until it's too short.
