In 2001, LeSportsac opened its first US main store on Madison Avenue in Manhattan (closed in 2019). That was my store! I visited frequently from the time they opened. I learned about the brand when I moved to Manhattan. Their handbags are very popular for leisure. With the casual dress when I was employed the bags with the solid colors could be worn daily. They never wear out. I can throw it in the washing machine if needed. If you purchase an item and then it goes on sale they graciously credit the difference to your credit card. I've had that experience in the past with the backpack I purchased online. Most of the bags come with a cosmetic case in the matching print of the bag. It's all about the convenient pocket placement for phone, keys and metro card. When my friend from Florida stayed with me I gave her one of my bags to use so she'd have everything at her fingertips. It's definitely a NYC necessity. I highly recommend their products. A little company history: LeSportsac, Inc. was started in 1974 in NYC by Melvin and Sandy Schifter. Until the sale of the company LeSportsac products were made in the United States. Melvin and Sandy Schifter informally retired from day-to-day operations around 1990. She was super patient and accomodating during my visits, when I tried all of the hats in her lovely studio, even when I brought mum and fiance along to help me pick. I ended up with a spectacular little thing with a gorgeous veil, where she could name a place and time every one of the materials came from. The hat is fabulous by publci consnsus, upon seeing it, a friend of mine went to get hairpin flowers ordered and loved them as well. I called her on Saturday and normally she opens her shop on Sunday at 12pm, but I had a wedding later that day, and she personally came in and opened the shop for my sister and I at 10am! She didn't have to do that but the gesture enough was so sweet! She showed us her monogrammed necklaces and gave us suggestions. We ordered the gold 16 inch chain, and medium monogram pendant. She told us it would take about 4 weeks, because everyone was trying to rush their orders in for Mother's Day. I told her it was no issue. The necklace was ready in three weeks and It was perfect, except for one thing, I noticed a tick in the monogram pendant. The lady stated it was normal but she said, don't worry about it, she will take care of it and get a new one made, which SHE DID at no extra cost. WHO DOES THAT?! NO ONE! If you want a monogrammed necklace at a decent price and someone who will work with you and who actually will go out of their way for you, go here! You won't regret it! PS. Her shop is basically a small station located inside the Cactus Salon in the Plainview Shopping Center. Just give her a call!

It's a week before Christmas so they store was rather packed but there were several sales associates who were visibly present and checking in on customers. I was greeted by a rather tall lady who saw me looking at a back and felt overly obliged to share the price and before I could respond she fired off " there are some others over there on sale". Oh, ok! That's what we're doing? Hmm Luckily for both of us, a beautiful brown angel in the form of an associate named Laurie came to my rescue. I shared with Laurie what I habitually pick out- bags in basic colors (black, tan, brown) instead of bags that are a fun accent and not so matchy- matchy. I looked at the Luna in red but decided against it as it can only be worn as a shoulder bag and while it's cute- that's not ideal for my lifestyle. I love to dance and frequent museums and I prefer to be hands free in those environments. Next, we looked at the Tabby Chain in Brass/ Blue. I love that purse itself but wasn't sure if I was going to get as much use out of that particular shade of blue ( more turquoise). I was still looking around when Laurie disappeared and came back with the Tabby Chain in brick red. I was immediately in love. It's perfect. I won't be over the little bag trend anytime soon and so for me I just need something for a few cards, a lipstick, phone and my car fob. I tested it out with all the above to ensure it would work and we were good to go. Laurie offered me a bottle of water while she checked me out and got the bag wrapped. To the tall Caucasian lady, I'm not saying you're racist but we have to be considerate of the micro aggressions that minorities deal with. Instead of announcing the price of goods or pointing folks to the sale section they didn't ask you for - what might be more effective is to ask " did you have something specific in mind or what budget did you have in mind"? That's more cultural responsible. I have always been a Coach girl and I'm not deterred by my experience with her. I've never made a Coach purchase I regretted. I only wish they allowed bags from the Outlets to be up cycled as well since I buy from both the higher and lower end of the brand and every now and then I'd like to refresh a bag and give it new life.

Being a stubborn girl, I thought it would be worth the try finding it elsewhere in my budget. After googling the make and model of my dress, Alissa's Bridal came up as a vendor. I decided to feel it out and give them a call. Brian answered my call and I told him I had the dress was at another store in NYC for $798, but I wasn't crazy about the service at all (unanswered calls- I felt like I was begging to buy a dress from them!) so asked if he could match their price and he confirmed that they would! He said that it would arrive at their store by April 15th and he would ship it directly to my house upon arrival. Though I have never been much for wedding planning hoopla, the one thing I wanted was a beautiful and unique dress. My original fantasy of going to the Philippines and having one made especially for me to the tune of $500 proved too ambitious, so I felt somewhat relegated to give David's Bridal a chance. One visit with my then-fiancé to the DB in Midtown East, and I knew it would never, ever, work out. (Sorry, DB fans!) Anyway, I happened upon this very Yelp page for Mary Adams in my search for bridal boutiques, and it was these same five reviews that I had read that convinced to look her up. Her website was filled with these fantastic, playful, creative - and wearable! - works of art. We scheduled an appointment with her for later that week. We entered a small but cheerful studio on the 6th floor of a nondescript office building, and met with Mary, a funky-cool woman in her 50s, someone who you just know marches to the beat of their own drum. We discussed what kind of wedding we were having and what we had in mind for budget. Rather than designing a dress from scratch, we opted to search her collection for an "off-the-rack" design that might suit our needs. The first dress I tried on, a pretty white layered organza piece, was ten times more unique than anything I had seen at DB. My fiancé and I breathed a happy sigh of relief and practically settled on that first dress, but out of curiosity wanted to fit a few more dresses. Heck, we had already made the trip, right? If I did not almost cry when I tried on the next dress, a stunning aquamarine gown with a halter and form-fitting bodice, and flowing, asymmetrical layers. It was THE DRESS. It was so gorgeous that I reconsidered every inclination and expectation I had to wear a white dress, and it took all my willpower to give it back to her. It was decided: Mary Adams was the one, and she was going to make MY perfect dress. I had at least four more visits with Mary over the course of three months. Just because it was considered "off-the-rack", she still sews every detail by hand or with her workhorse of an ancient Singer machine, customizing it to you. She presented me with fabric choices and color options, and she offered her wisdom generously when I asked for advice. Goodness, she even handled my mother gracefully when she came with me to the subsequent fittings (nothing short of a miracle). Lola C. said in her review that she was sad to pick her dress because she would no longer be part of the process. I ditto that. We planned for beach wedding in St. Thomas last October. My dress, as per Mary's instructions, was to be turned inside out and crumpled in a bag for the plane ride. I was hesitant to do this, for obvious reasons, but it's part of what made the dress so freaking cool. That, and because of the way it was made I never had to worry about not fitting into my dress even if I gained five or ten pounds. (I just had to make sure I drank enough beer so I didn't lose weight!). Needless to say, I loved my dress and felt absolutely beautiful in it. Everyone genuinely raved about it -- not out of any sense "Tell the bride she looks beautiful even if she looks like a train wreck"-obligation. I jumped and frolicked in the sand and had the time of my life in this dress, and by the end of the night I really didn't want to take the dress off (to the slight dismay of my now-husband!) To end this rambling love letter/unsolicited life story, I highly recommend a visit with Mary Adams, not just for your wedding, but for any occasion you want to look and feel fabulous. She'll work with you to design exactly the dress you want, and then you'll have about four fittings (in my case) over three months or so. I had a good idea of what I wanted, but her ideas made the dress so much more special. Mary's work is exquisite and her dresses are unlike anything else you can find. The experience is pleasant throughout and while she's a very assertive personality, Mary's a terrific woman and well worth getting to know. Ask her about the sewing classes she runs for neighborhood girls. As Elizabeth G mentioned, look over her books - I don't think her site does the range of her talents full justice.

None of these are the actual dress I chose, but suffice to say I tried on a few different dresses and with each one she offered her thoughts, but never in an overbearing or obnoxious manner. She treated me with the same dignity as if she were my family or friend of many years which means the world during this process, so thank you for that. Just as I thought I was settling on a dress, the one of my dreams peaked out from behind others and although it wasn't my size, Natalie helped me try it on with excitement and boom just like that she placed an order for it to come in my size, get the show back on the road and check one more thing off my "To Do List!" Due to religious reasons, my arms needed to be covered and my gown was a sweetheart cut. They patiently allowed me to bring in different bolero options to try on with the dress, until I found the perfect one. Not once did they make me feel like I was a bother, having them retrieve my dress from the basement each time until I paid off my gown in full. Diane was a great consultant and patiently helped me choose the right bolero and crown. To top it off, my husband and I switched our wedding date to an earlier one with my gown already being ordered. Everything worked out with me paying a fair rush fee and receiving the gown well before the wedding. No organization is perfect as the day we scheduled for my pick up, my gown wasn't ready (it wasn't yet steamed). I believe he forgot to write it down but it was ready the next day! This was fine as he did say that I should give myself some time for pick up. My Matron of Honor also got her dress here and we loved it. No complaints. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely recommend them.
