We came in late (10 min till closing), looking for some leotards for our dancer in the family. We are from Texas, and the employee in the front was very rude, choppy, and dramatic. Even expressing that our flight was the next morning. She obviously had NO care at all. Very horrible first experience in this store. This store has terrible customer service. When I called about a special order leotard my daughter had ordered online over 2 months prior they told me they had the leotard in the store but couldn't possibly try to find it because they were too busy even though I said I would be in NYC only for a few days and she needed it before we left. When I called the following week to try and get the leotard-considering making a special trip to pick it up-they told me it had already been sent to LA, this was without giving us any notice that any of this was happening via email or phone. read more

Lovely find! Yumiko is a dancer herself, so her dance-wear creations are comfortable. On top of that, the styles are diverse and one of a kind. Once you know your size, you can order online and [best of all] custom select your colors. LOVE THAT! The store is very sleek and cute, and they carried different colors than the standard listings online, which was nice. The price is reasonable for custom-made leotards. Can't wait to wear the newest addition... Merry Kwannukah to me :) p.s. After wearing Yumikos, I can confidently say that it's the most slimming bodice of a leotard in the market. Hand-made, custom dance-wear that combines the best of Japanese fashion sense and Spanish craftsmanship. Aside from the custom items, they do carry a selection of ready-made pieces in their sleek and sparse little store. You can order online, too, and in that case you're selecting a custom piece per your size, color, and options (stripes or no; sleeves or not). Not cheap, but highest of quality and again: it's custom. What drew me most of all to Yumiko however is that they have some innovative, beautiful, pieces for male dancers. Dance-wear for men is difficult to locate and some of Yumiko's stuff is very wearable outside of dance, too. If only they'd make custom hoodies, too, how awesome that would be! I love Yumiko! Beautiful, super comfy, high quality leotards, wonderful, super helpful sales associates and a gorgeous store. They also have swatch cards and an area where you can play with swatches to create your perfect, customized yumi by special order. You can also save on shipping by having website orders shipped directly to the store. I do wish more fashion colors and styles were stocked ready to wear in size XL. I'm right between an L and an XL, depending on the style, and it would be nice to have options for colors other than black in that size. I do understand that their core customer skews much smaller and younger, so it makes sense to have more selection in the smaller sizes. I don't always want to wait 6 weeks for a custom piece! One other issue is that the fitting rooms, while beautiful and roomy and bright, tend to be somewhat uncomfortably warm, I guess due to all the bright lighting. I'm one of those people who is always cold, and even I find myself feeling overheated by the time I'm done trying on a few leotards. All that said, I am always very pleased with my purchases at Yumiko, and seriously, the sales team there is great, and always treats me well, despite my being an adult recreational dancer. read more

I have been ordering Yumiko's for my daughter for 8 years and I just read the reviews on yelp. I am floored by the negative things people are saying. As a matter of fact, Yumiko is the only leotard my daughter will wear because of how wonderful they fit and they are made. 1. When you buy a Yumiko either by phone or at the store the sales person will tell you that they are non-returnable. "Now let me say that I did a custom order, and there was grease on the leotard, they sent me a return label and made another one ASAP" 2. I have called the store at 6:50, as a matter of fact this happened on 11/29 and they still sent me pictures of the leotards that I wanted so I could order the next day. 3. I have probably talked to just about every sales person at this store and EVERYONE has been nothing but super nice to me 4. I sent my husband to the store and he got there right before close. The sales person helped him find a leotard my daughter needed for intensive and NO ONE rushed him out the door. 5. I have probably bought 30+ leotards from yumiko over the past 8 years. The quality is beyond anything you see at a dance store. I have passed these leotards down and they are still being worn by dancers. We have no pilling, ribbing, or anything. You cannot buy a leotard of better quality. 6. My daughter is long and very very very thin. There is no baggy butt, there is not sagging fabric, and there is no threads coming out. All you need to do is wash gentle, do not put in the dryer, and treat is like nice clothes and you will have a leotard forever. The sales people have dressed my kid for 8 years and have never been mean or rude. I usually leave picking out the leotard to them because they can see them. The people who have left 1 stars are nuts. I love this store and I love the quality of the leotard. My daughter dances 6 to 7 days a week and this is what she lives in. They are simply the best! Only in Manhattan can a store selling leotards and only leotards make it in a high-rent zone. Okay, maybe also in Tokyo. The inventory is not huge but manages to span quite a variety of styles, some with sexy or artistic cutouts, others more traditional in shape. There's a rainbow of colors, many with contrasting trim or colorblocking, plus the very necessary all-black section. I bought a basic black cap-sleeve to wear casually (I haven't taken a dance class in donkey's years) but the thing is so comfortable I'm already tempted to get another, in a more daring colorway. $60+ is not cheap for a piece of dancewear, but considering they are made in Spain and absolutely 1000% nicer than standard leotards, it's not a terrible deal. I used to have tons of dancewears, and when I decided to move to NYC I only brought 5 leotards. And 3 of them were Yumiko's. Moreover, I bought all of them before 2011, but they are all still GOOD. Yes it is pricey, but it lasts longer. I personally prefer their "soft" fabric - some of their leotards are made with very smooth but sturdy fabric - it never squeezes your skin or leave a red mark (it's apparently different with the typical leotards out there). If you visit their shop, you can ask for the fabric chart, see what colors are available with the softer fabrics, choose the design from hangers, and can order what you want. I personally don't recommend string-shoulders and string-halters, bc the rubbers inside string usually worn out after an year of laundry. No matter it's from Yumiko or not. read more

These leotards are addictive like some illicit powdered drug. Almost as expensive, too. But they hold up well over time and are great for class. The service here is pretty mixed. I definitely had some pretty bad customer service here, but then again, those leotards are damn pretty so I just fork my wallet over. In theory, I like the idea of custom leotards, but when it comes time to actually put something together, I'm so overwhelmed by all the choices (would you like this shade of ecru or that shade of eggshell? Or is that too American Psycho?) that I just go for something on the hanger. And guess what? It looks smashing anyways. At certain times of the year, the inventory is CLEANED OUT because everyone and their mother decided it was time to go buy leotards (ie., winter holidays, summer intensive starts). I do wish the sizing were more consistent, and then I'd avoid the store and just buy online. read more

I was so excited to visit this boutique on my last visit to NYC. My husband and son happily brought me here and waited patiently while I tried on half the store because they knew how much I was looking forward to this. I did however end up slightly disappointed. While they did have a lot in stock virtually nothing was available in my size. I realize Large to X-Large probably isn't a big seller, but I know I can't be the only super tall dancer out there. The few leos they did have were in lovely colors, but they were so sheer. They say right on their website if buying a pale color get the full lining. So why didn't they have it on their ready made pale pink leo? I couldn't have bought it if I wanted to. My studio is relaxed but I'm pretty sure they'd have a problem with me showing up virtually nude. Trying stuff on in their coffin of a dressing room was a pain as well. They had a long exposed florescent tube in there. It was so hot even though I was half naked I was still sweating bullets. And it was so tiny I was afraid I was going to burn myself on the lightbulb. The poor girl in the other dressing room was painfully shy and her mother was dying from the heat in there with us. But the girl was afraid to come out of the room because she'd be in full view of the store. I could see her mother the whole time since my curtain didn't really close, there's just no privacy in there. The sales girl was probably the most helpful and best part of the store. She answered all of my questions and even let me take photos of their swatch booklet (as opposed to paying $25 for it). Even though it was right at closing when we left I never felt rushed. Bottom line, great product and kind, patient, and helpful staff. But the store and it's inventory is really lacking. The product itself (if you custom order) and the sales girl are the only reason I rate this place so highly. If I were going just on the store (layout, dressing rooms) and product available it would get two stars at best. I'd probably go back, but only after calling and finding out what they had in my size first. read more

I recently contacted Yumiko because my daughters white leotard was discolored. I asked for input on how to care for it and washing instructions in case we were doing something wrong. They provided input on how to care for your Yumiko leotard and since I had been doing everything correctly, they offered to send us a new leotard that was made out of a different fabric. The Yumiko representative was very friendly in her emails and kept us updated on the production and shipping of the leotard. We just received it today and it looks beautiful. We are Canadian customers so we were very happy to have the item shipped to our home address. Had a wonderful experience! read more

I recently shopped at the NYC Yumiko Boutique and was looking for a "stand-out" leotard that I could wear for an upcoming audition. I am not a classically trained dancer and mostly sport a fitted top and a skirt and leggings for most theatrical auditions, but Yumiko has such great ratings and is very highly recommended for quality and style, so I caved and ventured to the store! I know very little of their fit, so I needed a lot of guidance while shopping through the store, and thank goodness I could do that, instead of ordering online like I do with everything else. The sales associates were so helpful and kind in guiding me through the various styles and sizes each style may fit. Although they mentioned each style fits differently on each body, I was able to try on a few different styles in various sizes and happened to find one that was perfect! I'm not one for spending a great deal of time in a store and leaving empty-handed, so I grabbed a nail polish that matches my Elise leotard in N-Cerulean! Now I'll really stand out at my audition! I want to thank Brooke for being so sweet and helping me feel confident with my purchase! All of Yumiko's products have three basic elements: gorgeous design, top-of-the-line quality, and most importantly, amazing colors and fabrics. The boutique is small but appropriately sized. As a guy in the dance world it can be really difficult to find cool and comfortable stuff to wear for class and rehearsals. Until I discovered Yumiko I didn't have much color in my collection. As well and being an amazing dancer she also has an eye and feel for what it takes to make a dancer comfortable. This will be my 3rd summer spent in NYC and I will definitely stop by. Last summer when I was there performing me and a few friends stopped by the store and actually got to meet her! She was beyond nice to all of us. She took the time to talk to us, find out where we danced, and what we were looking around at. I have always had great visits to the store. The ordering process can sometimes be a bit lengthy, but worth it to have a custom piece in your work wardrobe that no one else will have. Unless they have the same tastes of course! read more

By far my most favorite leotard I have ever purchased! The fit is perfect and the leotard itself is super comfortable. They have so many options and are constantly updating their stock. The leotards are very durable and I would highly recommend these leotards to anyone. It's tradition for my daughter and I to take a trip to the Yumiko boutique every Spring so she can stock up on new leotards for her summer intensives. TIP: Early April is the perfect time to go the store! It's right before YAGP, so you'll avoid the crowds and benefit from the added stock. We took our trip last Friday, arriving to store about an hour before closing, and the sales girls couldn't have been nicer! We were the only ones in the store so they allowed my daughter to come out in the main area to look at herself in the bigger mirror. They laughed and joked with us, while providing my daughter with their knowledgable and honest opinions. It could not have been a better experience! My daughter left upon the store closing with a giant smile on her face and a bag full of leotards that she is so proud of. read more

While I was walking the streets of NY, I came across Yumiko. I am not a dancer so I wandered in thinking they were bathing suits. Being a California girl, I stop in almost every bathing suit shop I see! But, I soon learned that they were not suits, but beautiful dance leotards! The associate read my confusion and kindly asked if I needed any help or had any questions. I told her what I thought and we both shared a laugh. I was intrigued by the leotards and even though the associate knew I was not going to purchase anything, she still took her time explaining things and talking to me. She was so personable and friendly! I recommend this place to anyone...not only dancers! The associates are great and the leotards looked beautiful. Terrible shopping experience. My daughter had been looking at Yumiko leotards for such a long time and as a gift we decided to buy her one. While we were in the city we came up to the 46th Street location. It was New Years Eve day and we were told as we walked in that the store was being closed and locked at exactly 3:00. (Rudely) This would leave us 45 minutes. No problem. One of the saleswomen was reasonably nice. The other was so belligerent and rude, did not offer any help (and when asked for help, didn't give any help!)that we will never come back. Miserable experience!!! SO disappointing! read more

I finished a performance today as a guest with a ballet company and ran immediately to Yumiko because I was leaving the next day. I got there 10 minutes before they closed, and as soon as I walked in the employees immediately acted annoyed because I came in a bit before closing. They would not allow me to try anything on saying that they close the dressing rooms 15 minutes early for "the customers comfort". Which makes no sense. I was the only one in the entire store and still they would not let me take 2 minutes just to make sure it was the right size. The customer service was unfriendly and unpleasant. As for the leotards, I wouldn't know because i couldn't even put one on. read more

I stopped in this fine establishment for a Christmas gift for my girlfriend after hearing such great things from her dancer friends about Yumiko leotards. I was a little out of my element, but thankfully the sales associates who were working were incredibly helpful. There were so many styles in so many colors! I couldn't believe it! The girl's helped me find two great pieces for my girlfriend. They were so reasonably priced too! She loved them! If you need a great, well-made gift for a dancer, definitely go to this Boutique. As a professional dancer/performer, audition and performance Dancewear is very important to me. Pros: Good quality leotards Cons: #1 I ordered almost $500 worth of dancwear from the NY boutique and was charged way too much for shipping the leotards to Boston. Come on, I just spent $500! I didn't expect free shipping, but they were going to charge me about 60 bucks for shipping?? Until I negotiated to cut that in half. The package came from nyc and could fit inside a small shopping bag and weighed maybe 2 lbs at most. I didn't expect a huge discount at all, but cut me a break, I had spent a lot of money. #2 The young lady helping with my purchase (and I didn't complain about the shipping nor did I take a long time to order- 15 min max for about 7 leotards) was not too friendly. It was like she wanted to hurry up and get the transaction overwith meanwhile I'm asking about other styles so I cant order more leotards. HELLO??? #3 Since I didnt want to wait half a year to get the dancewear, I had to purchase from the nyc boutiqe. Weeks before I purchased from the nyc boutique, I ordered the color chart and fabric online so it would give me a good idea on what color combo and fabric to pick etc. This little piece of cardboard I kid you not took over 2 months to arrive in the mail. It costed me about 30 bucks total and it was literally a piece of cardboard with little color squares of cut-out fabric. DONT BUY THE COLOR CHART GIRLS/GUYS. Since I dont go to nyc too often, I bought it to get a feel for the fabric and see the colors availabe (wanted something tangible). It was a flmsy folded piece of cardboard with little fabric squares and I was charged $30 for it and it took over 2 months to receive??? Wow. RIP OFF. read more

WAS SO HAPPY I GOT TO GO TO YUMIKO THIS WEEK! I dragged along my whole family to make the trip to the boutique when we were in NY. I could not be more happy I did. The shop is so cool, and so well stocked. I have been accostumed to ordering online, but this was a whole new and amazing experience! I got to try everything on, had so many color choices to choose from and it was awesome. I am so thankful that I even had the sweetest sales associate helping me make my choices. I am truly floored by what happened to me. I called the store and ordered a Ready to Wear leotard, size XS. I told them it was for my daughter and it was her first Yumiko. No one told me to order up a size. Additionally, no one told me that they are NON-REFUNDABLE! Literally two minutes after placing the order, I called the store back and said I wanted to cancel the order. The said they wouldn't! The leotard hadn't even been packed let alone shipped. The manager, Maria, was very unreasonable and dismissive. I finally got in touch with her supervisor, Frank Leusner, who is in charge of Yumiko USA, and he too declined to reimburse me, despite acknowledging that I called back within 2 or three minutes of ordering to cancel. We exchanged many emails and he wouldn't back down. He finally agreed to get me the leotard in a size larger, but frankly, I did NOT want to put a dime in their pocket at this point. Additionally, I've come to learn that many stores carry Yumiko in a great many styles, sizes and huge variety of colors, unlike this boutique. You are much better off putting money into a local business, such as I did at Portland Dancewear (their service was awesome.) If you do make a purchase to Yumiko Boutique, be sure to use a major credit card so you can file a dispute. Had I used a credit card, there is no way they would have gotten away with this consumer fraud. read more

Good leos (though short in length) but horrible customer service that turned me off from that brand definitively. I came from Canada, so excited about shopping at the boutique last year, but given the rude customer service I left empty handed. I was literally the only customer there. I came in, no greeting, I was left alone in the shop. No help for choosing a model or a fit. Two sales ladies were at the back in a little office texting or doing other stuff. Anytime I would need something I would have to speak out "excuse me" and go to the door of that back office. I was clearly bothering their little business back there. All they cared about is that I only had 5 items at a time and that I give the hangers back. They never tried to see how I was doing or if they could help for anything. They walked by me many times, but I was invisible to them. I had to ask at least 6 times through the back office door to get a size or else. When I was hesitating between a M or a L, I got "well different cut Leos look different on different people" thanks for that luminous piece of advise, that's really helping. I left the boutique, and no one greeted me out of course. This was the second time having that kind of service at the boutique. I wrote to Yumiko to let them know how they were treating their customers at that location, never heard back. Given how expensive the leos are and how passionate people are about their product, you would think they care a little more. Apparently not. I turned to Eleve, from which I received excellent customer service every single time in addition to having great leos. read more
