I've been coming to this salon on and off for about five years. I used to see the owner, then switched to another stylist because of scheduling. I recently went back after being out of the city for a while, and it was honestly one of the WORST experiences I've had. If you're a Republican or lean even slightly right, I would not come here. The stylist spent the entire appointment talking about his political views and making pretty harsh comments about people who voted for Trump. It wasn't just a passing comment. This went on the entire appointment, completely unprompted. I didn't engage at all and kept things professional, but he just kept going. He couldn't read the room whatsoever, and I felt uncomfortable the entire time. Getting your hair done should be relaxing, not a situation where you feel talked at or judged. I started coming here when my hair stylist Joey moved here and I LOVE IT! The front desk staff is always very friendly and warm! The salon area is ALWAYS clean and very well lit which I love because even on a rainy day, I feel like it's sunny out. They always have good music playing and they are very well priced! I was on CL browsing, and saw this ad. $25 for a haircut is obviously a really good deal, so I responded, asking if it was with a stylist or someone in training looking to get their hours. The ad didn't specify...it says "We also do just haircuts for only $25", so Iemailed them and received SO much sass from them for asking. Why would I ever want to go to an establishment that talks to people this way? So demeaning... All they had to do was say, "Thanks for asking. It is with someone in training, not a stylist. They were both huge transformations, from long hair to a Bob and long hair to a short pixie most recently. I just brought a couple photos and descriptors of what I wanted, but left most of the artistic decisions to her (as one should, hair stylists are artists!). Never been anywhere else since moving to the city 3 years ago, but today they lost me as a customer for charging 50% cancellation fees because I was 10 minutes late for an appointment. I took an Uber and got delayed in traffic, and when I reached there after the 40 minute trip, I was told I'd have to reschedule. No mention of the cancellation fees until I got the invoice in my email. The bad review is not as much about the cancellation fees (I paid more for the Ubers, and have happily paid the cancellation fees in the past when I had to reschedule last minute due to work). It's about the way the salon communicates, with a kind of arrogance that's not very pleasant. I'd rather cut my own hair than go back. read more

I recently got a hair cut and highlights from Eva. I liked her style and I trusted her skills. I was also very excited reading the reviews. Initially I was quite unhappy with my hair cut because it didn't fit my face. I got highlights the next day, and my initial reaction to it was also disappointed because the color looked very dull and didn't fit my face. It looks slightly better after washing a few times but still not super great. I paid a bit over 550 dollars for these two services which is a lot of money, and I think for the money that I paid, I had low satisfaction. She is a super nice person and very friendly, and she offered to fix anything I was unhappy about after a few days of trying, but I don't know what you can possibly fix after already cutting and coloring, and I do not like to be someone complaining and going for fixes.. However, I do think for the money that I paid, I was expecting something better for my hair. If you have really high expectations, maybe lower them. You will have decent hair after your new do but nothing special which may or may not justify the cost. read more

I came to Bryant to correct a not so good balayage that was done at another salon down the street. He did what I asked (though rushed) and made my hair blend better but once I got home and was in different lighting my hair color looked gray. I also realized he basically only blended the very top layer of my hair and all the middle and underneath layers had not been touched. I went to go get the color correction expecting to have more of his attention this time but he barley had time for me even though I booked the appointment beforehand. He quickly fixed JUST the front gray highlights and neglected the back. He then handed me the blow dryer and said he didn't have time to blow dry my hair after already rushing through the color correction. I just left and when I went to school a few days later I saw in the good lighting the my hair still looked gray and the shades did not blend well. I finally went to Phillip Ciampa salon and they took their time and now my hair is a beautiful color and very well blended. I've been here a couple of times for balayage and cuts and realized I never left a review! I have pretty healthy long hair that I don't style often, so I don't have to get more than 2-3 cuts per year, but when I do I always come back here. The balayage looks AMAZING- I have really dark brown hair but asked for golden highlights that get more intense as it gets lower, and they nailed it! I've had a couple of different stylists and they are always fun to talk to and leave me SUPER happy. DON'T DO AMERICAN WAVE! Waste of money!!!!!! First couple of times were okay, I had haircuts by different stylists. None of them are as impressive. Last time I did American wave - perm for the so called beach wave. It supposed to be very natural looking and healthy. Had my hair cut last week with Michelle. It was $225. I went to her because I saw online that she was rated best in Boston. I screwed up. I wanted bangs (that I've had before) and somehow got super-wide warrior bangs. One side is about 2 inches too wide and sits on top of the rest of my hair. It's pretty embarrassing and I don't know how to hide it. My friends are making fun of me because I look like a soldier. Super not flattering on me or anyone else. I look like I cut them myself. At this point, I wish I had. She thinned out the ends with a razor which seemed like a stylish idea. But has left my hair looking wispy and thin and stringy. I'm pretty sad about this and will have to wait a very long time for this to grow out. I don't think I've hated a hair cut this much in as long as I can remember. Why the two stars and not one? Raymond is the best!! Here is my story. In January, I told my old hair stylist that I wanted to have blond hair. So she told me that in order to get the color I wanted, I needed 2 or 3 sections. Which resulted in 6 sections and my hair totally damaged. January - red color, February - chocolate color, March- dark brown color, April- light brown color, June - highlights all over my hair, July- light brown color on top So finally in August, I decided to look for any salon that could help me at that point. Well, his name just click (I thought it was different and creative) The first appointment went very well, it was an evaluation to see the condition and what I wanted to do with my hair. Raymond is very honest and I like that about people. He took a look of my hair and literally told me all color I had in the last 6 months. He could not bleach my hair because my hair was literally falling apart (I arrived almost desperate from a highlight section with my old hair stylist). Oh boy, was I nervous walking in to this salon yesterday. I was only coming because I bought a $35 haircut discount at HomeRun and I've been meaning to do another big chop on this mane. But...I'm black--more specifically, Jamaican, (East) Indian, and Puerto Rican. Meaning, my hair texture can sometimes puzzle an 'ethnic' stylist, let alone the sweet fair-skinned ladies that work on Newbury Street. Enter KRYSTLE. My God, what a woman. She knew I had a plane to catch and had me in and out in about 90 minutes. She is a tall, gorgeous, half-Portuguese sister that shipped my ethnic hair into shape in such time. She washed me, then started talking to me about my hair in the chair. I was shocked. How did she know about what relaxers did to black hair or going natural or how to approach this situation? Apparently, she has done all types of ethnic hair both in training and for friends. I loved it. She gave me a stunning, perfect, short bob and I left feeling like my car would have to be towed in order for the universe to be balanced out. It wasn't. Derek Yuen is so insanely talented. He's not a hairstylist - he's an artist and magician. I started going to him at James Joseph a couple years ago after I stopped someone on the street to ask where she got her amazing waves. As soon as he moved there was zero question that I'd follow him. I'd follow him anywhere! He gives you totally individualized attention, remembering everything about your hair and your preferences, and he is totally honest with you about your hair, what will work and what won't. After getting a haircut with him you will not be surprised that he's been featured in all kinds of magazines and and has worked with movie stars. Every time I get a cut, he does something a little differently and always gives me a spectacular blowout, so I time my haircuts to always be before something exciting. I get compliments on my layers all the time. Even the couple times that I've gone to other salons for blowouts (I can't afford this place for that) they've gone out of their way to compliment the great job he did on my hair. If you've read any of my other reviews, you know I don't really care about atmosphere, but the atmosphere at Eva Michelle is so nice it's noteworthy even for me. Derek's station is at the end in this gorgeous little spot where you can look out the wall-to-ceiling glass windows and it kind of feels like you are floating above Newbury St. And the small staff has a really genuine feel about them. When I was waiting in the chair after my shampoo, I commented on the view, and the assistant, Chelsea, said "Here, I'll turn your chair so you can enjoy it while you wait!" Seriously, could you get any sweeter than that?? The price is really high and I have a minor heart attack every time I pay the bill, but it's totally worth it. I go the minimum amount that Derek says I need to for my hair to stay healthy (every 4 months) and it's for sure worth whatever else I need to lose out of my budget. With this cut, I wash, condition, and comb my hair and then do nothing else - no products, no blowdry, no styling - and it looks amazing. Time is money! At least that's how I justify it to myself.. Overall, Derek is the best hairstylist ever, and if you live in the Boston area you should consider yourself lucky to be in the same city as him :) read more

I've actually had my hair done by both Michelle and Eva at James Joseph back years ago when living in Boston and have had great experiences with both. I just found out that together they opened this salon and was so excited to check it out. Luckily Michelle was able to squeeze me into her schedule for a quick haircut. One thing I love about Michelle is that she has so many great ideas, but at the same time she gives you exactly what you ask for. As for the salon itself, I was quite impressed by the layout and look. The machines look so hi-tech, I felt like I was on the cutting edge of style and innovation. Thanks to Gareth for my amazing color! I went in with high anxiety as I have not lightened my natural jet-black hair in well over 5 years. He definitely put me at ease. He exuded so much confidence, I knew I was in good hands. Immediately after I sat in the chair, he asked me what I wanted to achieve, so I presented him with a picture of what I had in mind. Light brown / ashy blonde balayage, a style I didn't have to maintain very often. I was a little apprehensive on the blonde shades, as I've had not so great coloring services in the past. My hair would always come out brassy, orange toned, not the best look! He took the time to thoroughly explain the process of lifting, toning, required length of time and techniques he would use. I fully understood in order to preserve the integrity of my hair, realistically, that I wasn't going extremely blonde in a day. The desired ashy effect I was looking to obtain would require a few more treatments. All the unnecessary damage it would've caused! I must mention, I'm not much of a conversationalist, however I enjoyed our exchanges, so personable! After about 4 hours or so, the end results were how I imagined (especially for virgin hair). The transition from dark to light was seamless. A perfect blend of cool, brown tones with golden blonde pieces. He methodically created lots of dimension. It's been over 2 weeks since and I am still so pleased with it! As I quote him, "Lived in look." Also one of the girls at my office loved it so much, she couldn't help running her fingers through my hair lol. I will definitely be back as I know brass is inevitable with level 1 hair..., Who knows, maybe I'll go fully blonde next visit! On side note.. Eva dealt with my drab, one note, grown out limp asian hair with great artistry and gave me an easy to manage layered cut with fantastic, natural looking highlights. Ever since I moved to Boston (about 6 years ago) I've been trying to find a good hairstylist who actually listens to me and doesn't do whatever he or she wants. She has been cutting my hair ever since and I have vowed complete fidelity to her magic hands. Today she colored my hair and I fell a bit more in love with her; my hair looks amazing (I'm pretty humble, I know). I didn't see my stylist's name mentioned here and wanted to put in a good word for her! Like a lot of the other reviewers here (weird ...), I now live in NYC, but I followed Jen from James Joseph salon and liked this place a lot. When I met her, she was a Chinese girl with a platinum blond mohawk. If she could get her hair that color, I figured, she could do it to mine! Fast forward 3 or 4 years and Jen no longer has a mohawk, but we are both still platinum blondes and she cut and colored my hair the entire time. Yes, prices are very high, especially if you need a double process color, and blow dries are not included with color. But Jen is a master of highlights. She will cover your head with so many tiny foils you won't believe it. I switched to a flat blond because I couldn't stand sitting still for a full head of foils, but I can't tell you how many compliments I got (especially from other women) at the time. However, you feel pampered ... you get a great scalp massage, they offer you coffee, etc. Last time I went, I forgot to wear my contacts instead of glasses, and they had special plastic sleeves to slip over the ends of my glasses to protect them from hair dye. Etc. I found a new colorist I like *almost* as much in Manhattan, but I'm still looking for someone who can cut my hair so it falls as nicely ... Maybe I can fit in a haircut next time I'm in town :) read more

How have I NOT reviewed this place yet?! I've been coming here on and off for a few years, always with Chelsea as a stylist. I would probably follow her anywhere - she just KNOWS my hair, which is fairly fine. She always gives a fantastic cut (and I'm usually pretty vague about what I want) and knows what products to use and recommend that will go well with my hair type. I always leave the salon with bouncy, shiny, healthy-looking hair (never limp and weighted down with products, which happens other places). She's also incredibly nice, which makes sitting in the chair really enjoyable! As a bonus, you can people watch on Newbury Street as you get your hair cut. :-) read more

I moved from Boston to New York 7 months ago, and two of the things I miss most about Boston are Anna's Burritos and my old stylist Paula. To be honest, I haven't been to Salon Eva Michelle so I can't comment on anything other than their newest stylist, Paula. I went to Paula when she was working at other salons and now half a year into manhattan, I'm still floundering to find a stylist who makes my hair even half as sexy as Paula did. I'm one of those people who wants to have tons of fun with his haircut but sucks at articulating exactly what I want. I flail my arms and make faces and say adjectives but suck at saying exactly what I want and where. Paula took the time to get to know what I liked, really get to know my hair (which is super thick and tons of stylists can't work well with), and gave me kickass pompadours, fades, and lazer lines every single time. I'm an actor so every so often I'd have "aesthetic constraints" because of a show and each time Paula found a way to work within the boundaries of my show and still have a super edgy and fun product for the daytime. Her fades are the best, she does awesome dye jobs (I had a blue-purple streak for a while), and can do amazing things with your hair. I think the main reason she's so awesome (apart from her skill) is that she gets genuinely excited to create something really artistic with your hair, but she brings you along for the ride so that your input is #1 and you always know exactly what idea she's working towards. More than any other stylist I've been to she has the perfect balance of listening to your input, suggesting something even better, and listening again so that you get exactly what you want (just better). Plus she's a bamf so it's always fun to hang with her for an hour or so. Go to Paula because except for if I'm back in Boston sometime, I don't get to anymore and SOMEBODY'S gotta have awesome hair in this world. read more

I'm updating because 1 - realized I've been going here for two years (!) and 2 - now Chelsea cuts my hair and I think I would follow her to the ends of the earth. I wanted a pixie last year and she really knew what she was doing to make my hair look amazing with my head and face and all of that. I got so many compliments, and she's been helping me now grow it out. It can be very awkward to grow out short hair, but Chelsea knows how to cut everything so I never venture into mullet territory while I get back to a bob and beyond. It's a bit pricey, but I never leave thinking, "so will this cut work tomorrow when my non-magic hands are styling it?" I've recommended this place to friends who have then recommended it to their friends. I have yet to hear of one of them going here then leaving for somewhere else.
