I must agree with everyone else - Yuki is fantastic. I went in earlier this week for a haircut after finding this place via Yelp, and I am so happy I listened to everyone else! Like Amm M., I have very straight, limp, fine hair, but Yuki was able to layer it and make it look fantastic. And even better, she showed me different options of styling it and told me to come back if I need help or have any questions (or if I want my bangs trimmed - complimentary for their clients). I woke up the next morning and my hair still looked amazing, and after washing it and doing it myself, it still looks fantastic. The salon is cute, and is in a great location (Parking is kind of a hassle, but that's to be expected in downtown Evanston - there are meters out front and garages and street parking on side streets). It's a totally comfortable environment, and the shampoo room is in the back out of view from the rest of the salon. Yuki is super friendly and really helpful. I was torn between two haircuts (I had long hair, like mid-back length, and was deciding between long layers and long bangs or a shoulder length bob). After looking at my hair, playing around with it, and asking me about my lifestyle (I'm a dancer so I have to be able to put it in a ponytail, preferably in a bun), she said to go with the longer cut so that's what she did and I have never been happier. When she was finished, I was amazed at how blended the layers were, the volume my fine hair had, and how great my hair looked without a bunch of product (a little finishing spray - no crazy mousse, gloss, pomade, or anything else). Never before have I been this happy with layers. She used a razor on me, and some crazy looking scissors I have never seen before, so it was a little intimidating when she was hacking away, but she really knows what she is doing. They offer students a discount, and a discount for first-time customers. It's in the same price range as Steven Papageorge, and cheaper than Art & Science, and after talking to people who have been to both places, Yuki is the best around. I was truly amazed by Yuki, the owner/lead stylist of Salon Texture. She was mindful, strategic and creative. I appreciated that she considered everything before cutting - how long should my hair be in relation to my height? what cut would compliment my wavy hair texture? how should the hair be styled to work with my cowlicks? She was able to blend that science with the style I was looking for, with amazing results. Her salon is a modern, clean space that also showcased her very cool paintings (for sale, also!). I'm another victim of Yuki's helmet haircut. And it is truly yuki! I was clear that I wanted no more than a 1/4 to a 1/2 trim and to keep the front of my hair long. She proceeded to cut 2 inch chunks randomly out of my hair to get rid of the thickness she didn't like. It's a nursing home hair cut. No movement. Very, very old school. She does not listen, she does not hear. One of those stylists who just keeps cutting and cutting to try to even things out. She needs to go back to cosmetology school. If she started out precisely working in sections rather then randomly pulling out large chunks of hair jaggedly from the scalp she wouldn't have to keep cutting until your hair is as short as an old guy cut from the 50's. I needed a trim and found Salon Texture on Yelp. I was a bit hesitant after reading some of the "Edward Scissorhands" comments on here but at the recommendation of a friend, I decided to give Yuki a try, and I'm so glad I did! I made an appointment for a Wednesday at noon and it was not busy at all, I had the undivided attention of Yuki as well as her assistant, who was very friendly and cheerful. After explaining to Yuki that I wanted no more than an inch taken off, she proceeded to work her magic for about 30 minutes and gave me exactly what I wanted - which was a trim that was NOT too short and cleaning up the bangs that I am trying to grow out. She also added layers and more texture to my fine limpy Asian hair. What I also really liked about Yuki is that she cuts hair dry, instead of wet, so you can see exactly how much she is cutting off. I found her to be very pleasant to talk to and she also gave me some tips on how to part and style my hair. I do trust anyone with my hair but I always end up disliking the outcome ...until I started going to Yuki. It's been 2 weeks now since my last cut and I look at my hair in the mirror just in awe. She is a true ARTIST and she translates it into hair (not to mention wall art, and clothing too). I've had long straight hair for the past 12 years and I like getting it trimmed when I can find time. Yuki not only manages to trim it perfectly, but she adds her special touches with her layering techniques and I love the way she gave me layered bangs that I can easily swoop to the side. After six months of trying to stave off a US haircut, I finally caved and decided to try a place in my neighborhood. I was starting to resemble Mowgli in Kipling's "The Jungle Book." I must admit, from reading the Yelp reviews I was sort of afraid of what Yuki the hair Nazi would be like...but I thought she was very cool. She used to work in the corporate world so maybe that's why she's so quick and no-nonsense about everything. She did a good job dyeing my roots and layering my hair. Of course, you can't compare it to my Tokyo stylist, Kurosawa (I swear there will never be another like him), but it'll do. I asked her to trim my bangs and she layered it a little more than I would like, but otherwise, I'm pretty happy with it. Best hair ever. Yuki has a very good feel for hair, the shape of your face and ensuring that one gets good volume and texture. I have flat, shapeless hair generally, but her cutting technique ensures I get full lift and an excellent cut that I know will hold its shape and is very modern and tastefully edgy. It's been years since I've sat in a hair stylist's chair and knew within 1 minute that I was in the right place. I hope she never, ever leaves the area. I would be quite sad. BTW - on the historical, critical reviews - totally respect that people have different experiences - Yuki was not rude, she's just a woman who knows what good looks like and is willing to share her thoughts confidently. O.k. Guys, Here it comes. Yuki is a nice Lady,but went their 4 hair extensions. Mimi put them in. Yuki was not in on the original conversation I had with Mimi. After Mimi put them in,Yuki came to help cut them in. YIKES!!!She cut off all the hair I had just paid to put in. Hair extensions don't grow back. I've had two haircuts by Yuki. Both my cuts looked good and grew out well, but were not exactly what I wanted. (I brought pictures. The second cut was so short it took 6 months to grow out to what I wanted, but it grew out perfectly.) I think she is talented, but her business model will keep me from going back a third time. It is true--she does bark orders at her assistant which is just awful. She also has clothing to sell in her shop, so she left me sitting in the chair off and on to help someone with the clothes--not cool. I've waited a bit to see how my cut was growing out....sadly not good. Yuki was very personable and the woman's hair she styled before my cut came out attractive, I did not have such good luck. Pretty disappointed, she went way shorter than I requested and now I'm stuck with helmet head syndrome until it grows out, which in my case takes forever. Also, I'm kinda queased that she took before and after photos (the after looks downright horrid) without asking my permission, since I was knocked off my game I didn't say anything. I have been going to Salon Texture for 3 years now and I hope to never have to go anywhere else. Not only does Yuki give a great haircut, she is also personable and fun. The overall problem I have with most places is the lack of communication. I got sick of telling a stylist one thing and getting another. The best thing that ever happened to my hair was when it met Yuki. I had recently dyed my naturally blonde hair red, and then tried to make it blonde again. The stylist I went to bleached my hair, turning it a nasty orange color and falling out in chunks. A week later, walking with tears in my eyes and a hat on, I randomly stumbled into Texture, desperately hoping someone in there could fix my hair. Yuki and Angela were completely understanding. They said they had been in the same situation before and immediately sat me down and got to work on my impossible hair. After a couple hours I walked out of there with a sexy platinum blonde hair color and a wicked cut that I never knew I could pull off. I was completely impressed and grateful, and have been every time since returning there. Yuki is an artist and it shows when she cuts your hair. She cuts your hair quickly and randomly (so it seems), but she knows exactly what she's doing. I have been a devout customer since the day she saved my hair over five years ago. No matter what new style I've wanted to try -- and there have been many -- I've never walked out of Texture unsatisfied. Yuki also has a fabulous personality. I have been to Yuki a number of times now. I stopped going last year because of a bad experience with color. I was given a "Base Bump" after highlights (which cost extra) and it turned my whole head this weird orange-pink tint. She simply toned it and it was ok. I am a dark ashy blonde to begin with so I need to use a straight lift without any tint. I also do not need anything more than 20 volume and the dryer to get good results. I had a couple of good highlights and then this base bump thing which is just peroxide (and if you have ever tried Sun-In then you know what happens with peroxide). So after going to another salon that was pricier and only ok results, I went back to Yuki. My last color was great. And she wrote down on a card what she did. This time, I didn't even see the card. And I told her I wanted to see more blonde highlights. That the hair underneath was too dark. So for some reason she changed the color formula and used a platinum and a high-lift tint. So I ended up with brassy white hair. When I got home, I also noticed in the back a dark patch right in the back center of my hair. I went back in and she touched it up and then put 40 volume bleach on the brassy parts. She also asked her assistant (who is not a stylist or colorist) if she should just do another base bump which I quickly said no to. I went home still feeling uneasy and took a good look in the mirror and just wasn't happy. It was still very brassy. Even my boyfriend asked why my hair was kinda orangey. So I called Yuki and went back in the next morning. She swore she didn't see anything wrong with it and at first tried to convince me of the same. I still wanted her to tone it. She said if she toned it my hair would turn green. I started to cry and she said she would add some color back into it. Well, now the bottom of my hair is almost a solid dark color and I still have brassy highlights on top. The worst part is that I paid even more money for it the next day. Yuki does give a good cut but I really don't think she knows color very well at all. Also, she was doing another color job at the same time as me. She seemed very rushed and flustered. All I know now is that I am going on vacation and have this weird 2-tone colored hair that is going to be permanently in my vacation photos as I don't have the money to fix it. I am also afraid to do anything else because my usually silky hair is now pretty fried. I really do like Yuki - I have nothing personally against her. She is talented with cuts, but she seems to overbook herself or doesn't really pay attention to details or the what the customer wants. I think Yuki is not a bad hair stylist, but in my experience, the way she runs the place is not very professional. This is purely based on my experience, and it does not have to be true always, but here is why I do not go there anymore. 1. She was always double-booked when I was there. Instead of spending all her time with one customer, she would work on two at the same time, so I ended up sitting in the chair with my hair half-done and waiting for her. 2. She cut my hair way too fast. It seems like she knows what she is doing, but EVERY single time I would have at least a few spots where she would cut way too much. My hair is not very long, so all these little holes are very noticeable. 3. The place is dark. I don't know if that's a direct consequence of this fact, but my hair was always cut much better on the side facing the window. The other side would always be messier and longer. 4. She used the machine to trim my eye brows without asking. I found this a little rude given that she did it without even asking for my preference. read more

DO NOT VISIT! Yuki is plain rude!!! My cut did not look good after my first wash, and the prices are a rip off. I last visited 2 years ago, but I still remember exactly what happened it was definitely a scarring experience. I don't have the time to do Yelp reviews, but I appreciate this site and I just made an account to speak up about this. As a nice and curious freshman at the time, I thought I'd give her place a try after reading some good things on here. I walk in, and it's very well decorated. The wait is surprisingly short (not many customers) and I compliment her on the artwork and she's very pleased. All is well. And then she asks me if I would be interested in a college discount since I'm a student, and I reply sure. I guess she suddenly snapped into a bad mood, because I am called "Poor College Student" during the entire process!! Wow. Complete turn-around. This was scary. (That was the first and last time anyone's ever said that to my face!! Not to feed into stereotypes or anything, but I go to Northwestern and education is not cheap. When I say yes to a discount you obviously offered, like any intelligent customer would, it's called being 'fiscally-responsible'. If anything, I definitely come from a background where have money to spend but the nearest I'll ever be spending it to you is across the street at Joy Yee's. I'd take a $5 fruit smoothie over your complimentary bang cut anyday. "Poor"? Please, hairstylist.) Well, I was so surprised then (and much more shy and soft-spoken as the freshman I was) that I didn't even really react. I was just numbly being insulted during my entire appointment. It was very embarrassing for me and I wish I had spoken back, at least. I'll never forget it. The only time I got any real respect when her attitude improved was at the end, when it was time to pay tip. Basically, she scared me into paying her a huge tip when I really shouldn't have ever paid any! To NU students looking for a new hair salon, and anyone else in particular looking for a good cut: spare yourself the regret! Don't give any more business to this incredibly rude and unprofessional business. To those that had a good experience here: we are happy for you and your successful cut, and you are lucky that she knows you'll be a regular and keep sucking up to you for her profit. But no one deserves to be treated this way, I'm obviously not the first, and she obviously doesn't have a professional work ethic. Take the reviews to heart and look very closely at the pictures on the Salon Texture website. Most of them are the SAME CUT in different lengths. No wonder I was told that I wouldn't have a chance to consult with Yuki about what I wanted - despite the claim on their website that they listen to their clients. Instead I was told she would do what she thought was "best." If I walked out with the one of the cuts on her site, I would have been happy... but I walked out with a style that I can only foresee finding a creative way to hide. When I said a second time that we wouldn't be moving forward with the appointment without a consultation, she said she couldn't see the style I wanted in the photo on my phone. But, she sure did find a way, 20 minutes later, to work into the conversation how unattractive she finds that particular style. I thought... but isn't it MY hair? I stayed because I mistakenly thought the owner of a salon called "Texture" might know something unique about curls. It seems she might just know how to give the appearance of texture to otherwise straight hair. When she and her assistant - honestly it took two of them - showed me the "magic" of working with curls, it was exactly what I taught myself to do over 20 years ago when I was in junior high just by reading 'Sassy'. As someone else wrote - I expected layers, but I got large chunks of hair just sheared out. My hair has been expertly thinned in salons before... I'm not seeing anything expert about how I look right now and will be asking another stylist to "fix" me soon. read more

Off of recommendations from two friends, I made an appointment with Yuki, a tiny ball of fierceness who immediately told me my face was being ruined by my long straggly hair. She proceeded to ask me what I wanted (a trim, more volume) and told me what she'd do if I weren't scared (cut 4 additional inches off or do blunt bangs) but recognized that I seemed very nervous cutting that much off. She was very quick, cutting layers through my hair and finishing in about twenty minutes. I didn't mind too much that she was busy with other clients as well, as her assistant was usually with me during those times. Both gave me tips for how to style my hair (and how to manage it without any styling) and overall were really friendly. Based on warning from my friend and some Yelp! reviews, I was pretty frightened but it was a pleasant experience! Overall I like the end product -- my hair definitely has more body. 30% off for first timers; even without discount, I'm much happier with Yuki than the two stylists I've had at Steven Papageorge (comparable prices). Definitely beats any Asha experience too, even taking into account their student discount. Would recommend giving this place a try, especially if you're Asian and have fine hair like mine. read more

Definitely not going back. The hairstylist forces her opinion on you, because of course you're the ignorant person and she's "the pro". My hair cut experience was really bad and here are the details: - The hairstylist is indeed rude and arrogant, as other reviews stated. I reiterated how I wanted my hair to be cut, which is getting rid of the split ends by trimming an inch or so while keeping my hair long and not layering it, and she kept saying this is NOT possible. I wonder how this might have been true if this is the way I have been having my hair cut for 10 years now! After a back and forth argument, she started working on my hair. Bottom-line: She barely cut anything! - When my hair was dry and I realized my split ends were still there, I called the salon and said that this was the case. Her assistant handed her the phone and she told me: I'm sorry, but this is how you asked for it to be done. I said, but I clearly stated that I wanted to get rid of my split ends, they're all still there. She said: Fine, but you'll have to come back and pay a full charge! (I had initially paid a lower price due to the first time client discount) - The salon was empty and yet she was in such a rush as if there were 4 clients waiting for her! I'm not sure why is the "rushing attitude" - Yes, she might have tried to show me some tricks to style my curly hair, but that's not what I paid $45 for, plus tips. I need to provide an update on my previous review, as I just had a truly wonderful experience that I wish I could rate as six stars. First, she gave me yet another fierce haircut, perfect for summer. After moving to Evanston for business school I set out to find a great haircutter to replace my go-to in San Francisco. I went to all of the "best salons" in Evanston and Chicago and by the 4th disappointment, I was desperate for even a 1/2-decent haircut. Yuki blew me away! She's truly amazing, giving exciting, great haircuts every time. A few cuts ago, she recommended a "crazy change" for me (granted, it doens't take much - I'm in busiess school!) - bangs, which I loved. Yuki is extremely talented and can customize her style of cutting, coloring, service etc. to all types. She has been trained by some of the biggest names in the biz, has traveled internationally for fun and work, and is about as cultured and up on the latest styles and techniques as it gets for Chicago. I would put her up against a stylist in NY or Paris any day. She is also fast as hell if you need to get in and out... I call her "Edward Scissorhands" jokingly, but she has cut so much hair that I rest assured when she is clipping away and I have never once had a bad experience. For those yelpers that have thrown her under the bus, I would put money on it that they suck at communicating what they really want, and they probably have similar dissatisfaction in the bedroom as they do with their hair service. She is not a mind reader, and if you are not honest with her and work together to clairify what you really want, sure - she is gonna roll with it and do what seems to make the most sense at the time, just like any other stylist would do! I love this salon. Yuki does a fantastic job with my color and my cut. She's also a great conversationalist (I saw some reviews that said otherwise); but let's be honest: if you're going to a salon for the conversation, then you probably should reassess your priorities. I go for the quality of the product, not how well they sell me on the experience. Every haircut I've had from her gets compliments and requires little to no daily style routine on my part. They are always able to get me in (even for highlights and a cut which can take 2+ hours) with little notice on my part. Worst hair cut EVER!! On her website, Yuki says "a salon experience like no other"... she isn't kidding! I went in to Texture to get a trim. Just a trim! I got butchered! Edward Scissorhands must have taken lessons from this gal. I had explained to her what I wanted, and that I was trying to grow my hair longer. Well, don't waste your breath telling her these things. She does what she wants! She completely layered my hair, cutting off 5 inches in places! She heavily textured the back, making it look like a giant fuzz ball... The end result? I moved to the area years ago and hopped around from hair stylist to hair stylist, never being consistently satisfied with the cut I received. That is, until I found Yuki and Salon Texture on Yelp. Yuki is the best! I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair. I've been going to Yuki for several years and have never been disappointed with one of her cuts. She does a "dry cut" which takes into account how your hair falls when dry instead of wet. This gives a more precise cut that simply looks better and is easier to manage. She definitely has a gift with hair. Her assistant, Angela, is super nice. They both make you feel welcome and comfortable in the salon. Update: I got a PERM here in December and it is seriously amazing!! I have super fine, straight hair naturally and Yuki gave me the perfect waves that I wanted. I always wanted waves that I could make more curly or more straight but was too scared to perm until meeting Yuki. She and her assistant did a wonderful job and I love it! They also recommended great hair care products so my hair isn't damaged at all, and the perm plus products were very well priced. I definitely got what I wanted and didn't end up looking like some Curly Sue/80s nightmare! Thank you Yuki!!!! read more
