I went to this place with my daughter on a Saturday afternoon for pedicure. My regular place was booked out for the afternoon so I was very happy when she accommodated us and I wanted to like this place. First of all, the place is not clean and there were bugs and roaches in the pedicure chair/bowl. She said that the bugs came from the restaurant next door. I should have walked away at the moment I saw the bugs but I thought that would be rude. I left with uneven nail polish, awful looking nails, and a bruised toe. This is an awful place for nails maybe better for hair but I am never going back there to check that out. read more

I went to Vera's to get a manicure done, and she made absolutely 0 effort in actually giving me a manicure yet she charged me the same price Ruby's does to students. She was so busy tending to other customers that she asked me to take my nail polish off myself, quickly filed my nails into shape, asked me to wash my hands myself, and then proceeded to put a new colour on. She didn't cut my cuticles, she didn't soak my hands in water and she didn't oil my cuticles or do any standard manicure practice. It wasn't a relaxing experience and I would not recommend anyone going there for a manicure. P.s. I went to get my threading done and she did a half assed job at that too, but she was quick to motivate me to bring my friends for discounted haircuts. Maybe I'd have better luck going their for actual haircuts and nothing else. read more

Like most people, I was pretty nervous to try someone new. But I assure you, you will not be disappointed. First off, Vera is an amazingly sweet woman and she listened and worked with me throughout the hair cut. Sounds pretty basic but it's crazy how many barbers will not ask you for your input throughout the process. Vera is very pleasant, but I am extremely unhappy with my hair cut. I wanted a trim and long bangs to frame my face. She literally just chopped some bangs in. Didn't look at where the hair she was cutting from was - so now I have a chunk of hair directly in the front that is cut straight across. I don't want to go shorter and blend it in because it would be too short to go behind my ear (TO HIDE my ugly bangs). I told her while I was there and as almost in tears. She had no ideas and did nothing to help. She kept saying that she did what was in the picture I gave her and said it looked great. I feel like I went back to the 80's and thought about starting a mullet but backed down. seriously. THEN she charged by $35 for a hair cut she KNEW I wasn't happy with (not to mention she did not even wash my hair since it was still slightly wet from the morning). Not a way to get customers. She seriously did not try to fix it and just kept saying she did what was in the picture. I am so pissed and now have these dumb bangs for my wedding in 7 months. Perfect waste of money. read more

I had my hair cut there actually yesterday, it has a very charming exterior with the 70s hair logo, and the inside is just a basic salon. But, the prices are very nice, they are having a new client deal right now where it's $18 for a woman's cut with shampoo and style, and $15 for a man's cut. Pretty great. The girl who cut my hair was very sweet, somewhat afraid to go outside of the norm for doing something a bit cool... but it turned out very well. She said the place has been there for 27 years so they must be doing something right. The owner is very nice and somewhat of a character which makes it a bit more fun to go there. A couple of friends --WHO DON'T USE YELP, BOOO-- had good experiences here, and I'm not willing to pay $40 elsewhere for a trim, so I stopped in. The interior is humble and basic. There were only two women working at the time, one of whom was only doing nails, so making an appointment is a good idea. A friend with an entirely different hair type than me left here with a cute and creative bob, so I was hoping that they could deal with very precise, very symmetrical cuts as well. To my relief, the Albanian woman who cut my hair has a good eye, can cut a proper line (very important when you have hyper-straight hair...) and did everything I asked for. She was also very friendly and hilarious, in a good way. Wash, cut and blowdry was $23 ($14 for men) before tip. I'm pretty sure I got no new client or student discounts. Valuable lesson: paying $45+ for a haircut doesn't mean that you get a higher level of competence, at least in this town. During the time I was there, a couple of other college-aged girls also came in for hair removal stuff-- they seemed like regulars. One of the girls got her upper lip done, which cost five bucks and took all of 30 seconds. So I guess contrary to the "eh" appearance of the outside, this salon knows how to handle the depilatory department as well, and without fuss. The other girl was trying to negotiate what she could get done that day with her limited cash on hand (yep, it's cash only!), but my stylist just told her, "Just pay me next time!" !!!! That is awesome and I wish we lived in a society that awarded that kind of business ethic. The appearance of this salon can be a turn-off if you're used to snob-ass places like Art + Science, but they get very high marks from me for both competence and customer service. I find myself wanting to go back even though I don't need anything done! read more

NEVER GOING BACK! Lady was so rude!!! I asked her for a price to get my hair done she told me 35 then she proceeded to wash my hair and said I have "African American hair" then when she was blow drying she said she's gonna have to charge me 55 cuz I have curly hair. I said I'm not paying more than 40. She proceeded to do a very SHITTY job and did not straighten my roots. At the end she showed me my hair in the mirror I asked her to go over my roots a little she said no because she's used to doing African American hair. I said I get my hair done every week and they always manage to do a much better job then this. After she proceeded to be extremely rudeeee I then just accepted they stole my money and did a shitty job so gave her her 40 and left. I've been holding off on this post because I go once a month to get threaded, and I didn't want to share my true feelings just yet. But now I'm not going back, so listen! Haircuts - awful. I looked like a jacked up China doll. Only once, never again. I did go once a month for threading, but I'm too annoyed to go back. I'm very impatient, so I hate when someone picks up the phone and talks WHILE working on me. I have places to go! Like home...to watch Netflix. Furthermore, the last couple times I've gone, there have always been stray hairs that I need to get replucked. Basically, after she's "done", she's really not "done" because I have stray hairs. I am super pleased with my second trip to Hair. For once, I ask for a trim, and my idea of a trim is the same as what the person cutting my hair considers a trim. It doesn't seem like a difficult trick to master, but somehow it's always been a problem. Not here! I miraculously received the same haircut the stylist had given me before, only a little shorter. Also, as before, the price was very reasonable and the service of a very good quality. I haven't, and probably will never, try color services here, but the person waiting while my hair was being cut was there for color services, and aside from being grown out (hence the visit to Hair), the highlights looked good. Went to Vera for a cut and highlight. Vera: sweet, hard-working. Cut: great. Style: outstanding! Highlights: uneven, with more than a half an inch of roots. I read about how the highlights can burn your scalp if they are applied closely to the scalp. Ok, so a little bit of roots is ok. But it looks like I haven't been to get my hair highlighted in over a month. Some places, the highlights were better, and some places the highlights were an inch from my roots. I walked out loving' my new hair cut. Vera take the time to get to know you and actually gives you the cut you want. I only wanted a simple trim and long layers, which she did beautifully. Hair was washed (long curly thick asian hair), combed without tangles (and the complaints), and cut, dried and styled for $35. Plus I got my threading for free! (Which Mary did a great clean up job on). Can't beat that price and friendly service, especially in downtown evanston.
