It's all about the cut for me. Really! My hair is extremely "style dependent." If the cut isn't good, there is absolutely no way to manage my type of hair other than to stick a big hat on it. (I am not kidding!) UnHwa has been my stylist for nearly 12 years and I am always happy with my style when I walk out of her salon. But, I have a jaded past. Before UnHwa, I bounced from one "leading" area salon to another unsatisfied with their mediocre cuts. Oh, and there was one disastrous color episode of Biblical proportions. The stylist was out of my color, didn't tell me, and concocted something awful. My friends didn't say a word but, they all looked SO shocked. I was too afraid to ask the stylist for a color correction! It was THAT bad! Salon UnHwa is light, comfy and friendly staff make certain that you have whatever you need. Enjoy a bev, the trendy music and this little hideaway in the heart of Daniel Island. There is no sales pitch for products like I have endured at other salons and no one is pushing unrelated products. UnHwa is a masterful, professional stylist who pays attention to detail and her clients' requests. She is personable, fun and yet oh so serious about her stylings. You and your hair are the only things that matter when you sit in her chair! Not only do I depend on UnHwa to style my hair but, she keeps my style current, fresh, and up to date without radical changes. But, I know that she could totally "do" an avant guarde style on the spot if the client requested it. I can't adequately describe an experience; the best thing to do is make an appointment with UnHwa for yourself. Bring some photos of styles you would like. Visited this salon when I first moved here from San Diego. Had a haircut and color by Christina. I wasnt't getting anything fancy and was pleased. It can be pricey but I saved a couple of bucks previously at another salon only to have my hair treated like grass. My mother came to visit last week and was stressed over the uneven cut her hairdresser in Tampa gave her. She sat in Chelsea's chair and the girl worked her magic. Yes, the haircut was $50, but I'd have paid twice that to make my mom happy. :) read more

I am a former employee of Salon UnHwa and have been a hairstylist for over 30 years. This is one of the most professional environments I have had the pleasure to work in! I left because I became a licensed Cosmetology Instructor and started a program at Virginia College and now run the Cosmetology Program at Wando High School. I have sent UnHwa 2 students over the last 6 years that she hired as assistants. I only send her my top notch students and they both loved working for UnHwa. One student will be getting her own chair when she graduates this June. The salon is beautiful! Although a few reviewers have said it was expensive, I believe the personal attention that you will receive at this salon is well worth the price. If anyone is less than pleased with a service, please let UnHwa know as she stands behind her work and her reputation and will do whatever it takes to make her clients happy. If I had not make a career change to teaching the next generation of hairstylists, I would still be there. She is a joy to work for! read more

I wanted to write this 5 star review because as a female - as most females will agree - it is all about the hair. Sorry, but this is the truth. I moved to the Charleston area about 5 years ago and I can not tell you how many terrible and upsetting experiences I have had with hair stylist - mostly in Mount Pleasant. I do not understand why the stylist here can't do hair! One particular stylist caused my hair to fall out and she told me it was hereditary. I knew that was not true as I could feel the burned spots on my scalp. I later found out by another stylist she believed the other girl was using straight bleach on my hair. Yikes! It has taken me three months to get over that experience. Needless to say, I think I have finally found a place I can trust. I have been going to Salon Unhwa off and on for a few years in between trying other hair salons. I will say they are a little pricier than what I would like to pay which is probably the reason I kept looking for an alternative, but the truth is I have gotten the best haircut and highlights there than any other place. I go to Julie Odachowski. Julie is very nice and sweet and listens to me. She takes her time and gives a great haircut. The highlights do not last as long as I would like but she is working to find out what she can do to prolong them so I don't have to get them done too often. Otherwise, I now believe the saying you get what you pay for - especially when it comes to a good head of hair. My hair looks so healthy and the haircut is really good. I know this because you can put your hands through your hair and tell if the hair cut is right or not - at least I can. I don't have to come home and get out the scissors to try to fix it myself. I am starting to get a lot of compliments on my hair which has not happened since I moved to Charleston so I know my hair looks much better. I honestly can tell you if you need a new stylist you should give this place a try and ask for Julie. Trust me - after about 6 different experiences in about 5 years - don't learn the hard way like I had to do. Just go! That is why this is a 5 star review. read more

Having moved from the North East I have to the 'best of the best' from the posh of NYC to the elite of Princeton, NJ. Unhwa is truly in a league of her own; I have never been so happy with the consistency of a salon. I am never disappointed! I have never used any other stylist other than Unhwa herself but I know that each of her stylists have there own style ... just talk to Unhwa and she will make sure that you get the right stylist for your 'look.' I personally like alot of 'fluff' in my hair. Unwha gave me a cut that works both 'fluff' and the sleek straight look. Everyone that leaves that salon looks ready for date night ! read more

I was looking for a new salon since my stylist at another place moved out of town, so I purchased a Groupon to try this out. Everyone was friendly, but the haircut was really just "Meh" (mediocre). Also, after I got home I found several strands of hair that hadnt been cut ( they were longer than the others). I was a recent CurlyGirl convert a month ago. I've been following the routine and avoid silicones and sulfates and heat drying techniques. I used to use a hair straightener all the time. My hair was fried on it's ends. I get a haircut once a year and I find it difficult to find a stylist who'll be willing to give me a cut that will flatter my waves. I called Unhwa and asked her about her heat drying techniques and my preference. She seemed skeptical of my request (I don't blame her since she's got a style of washing hair, blow-drying and straightening for a dry cut, and it's a method she was know for and was highly appreciated for by her clients.) But she asked for my reasons, so good sign of communication and was willing to work with me on what I wanted. I was nervous when I came in. Her staff who washed my hair was super friendly and chatty. Quite knowledgeable on a range of subjects. Most stylists who cut my hair in the past can find it difficult to reach me or talk to me, so the experience wasn't totally the most pleasant, but not at Unhwa. I think the relationship you can have with your stylist is important. And when Unhwa came to cut my wet hair, we chatted about gun control laws, an intellectual conversation I didn't expect from my stylist. Unhwa knows her clients well. And it was definitely an experience. Besides that, Unhwa revitalized my wavy hair with a haircut that I absolutely fell in love with. She also told me what cut she wanted to give me before snipping away and asked for my thoughts on it. She was considerate, knowledgeable, and was flexible in meeting my needs. Her place is a whole lot pricier than most haircuts anywhere. Haircut itself was $80. So it feels like a splurge, which is for the experience really. It was awesome! Def recommend. read more

Ive heard great things about the owner, but alas, i did not have the owner. I had someone who was essentially fresh out of beauty school (3 yrs removed), paid like a master stylist, and positively clueless when it comes to coloring hair. My hair is literally destroyed. Completely fried. I had it fixed at a salon downtown, and it took 3 stylists with a combined 45 years experience to fix the mess this girl created. If you go to Salon Unhwa, only have the owner do your hair. Lesson learned. read more

I would never got to this salon. I went looking for a haircut - shag/bob. Showed a number of photos to the stylist. Was also so flexible with request, so that she could do whatever was best to look good on me. Instead, I got a bob that is the most unflattering cut I've ever had, in my life. It is on par with my nose. Honestly, I don't know a single soul that this cut would look good on. I'm trying to be positive - it's only hair after all and will grow out. But I'm looking at wearing a hat for the next two months. Not only that, the stylist was well aware of my unhappiness and the owner picked up on this as well, but no effort was made to ask what I thought or what was wrong, even though I was on the verge of tears. This is not to say the stylist wasn't sweet - she was and I'd hate for her to get in trouble. But if she's inexperienced (on the younger side), then she needs to be trained further and supported while cutting. And the owner should have definitely said something to me when I was leaving. I had a bad cut walking out the door and that shouldn't have happened. read more
