After striking out with a few salons in the city I decided to try the suburbs. I just can't justify paying over $450 for a cut and color, which is what most places around me (Wicker Park) are charging. Finding a new hairstylist is so stressful, but I'm so glad I found Maddie! Been going here for years, when my stylist retired. They suggested "Alva" who cut my hair and gave me the worst haircut I've ever gotten. Disappointed that they connected me with a rookie stylist who can't cut hair and struggles maneuvering her scissors which made me nervous to start. I brought a photo with me and she folded it up, never looked at it, and gave me the most nonsense haircut. And I have straight hair that I have a lot of, but it is thin. Alva dragged the scissors along the bottom 4 inches of my hair instead of cutting it. Once I realized this (my glasses are off so hard to actually see) I had to ask her to stop cutting that my hair doesn't respond well to that. Now I can't comb it through now as it all knots up at the ends. She knew this during the blowout. I think she was trying to cut the ends so they flip, but doesn't know the technique. The salon asks for feedback and I gave Alma one star, and they never followed up. I will never go there again or recommend this salon! $90 to ruin my hair for a haircut. Geesh. Considering what women spend on their hair today, I think a salon should have more of a personal touch. After moving to another state, finding a new hairstylist is definitely the most urgent task, right? Highland Park is lucky to have many places to keep you beautiful and I tried several. I keep coming back to Salon Vole because it feels most comfortable. They use Bumble and Bumble products which is absolutely a huge plus. Emily and Anthony are the stylists that worked on my hair and both are wonderful. I have been very satisfied with Anthony's balayage technique and whenever I need to get extra pretty for a special event I come here for a blowout or curls. They also offer make-up applications here but I have not tried that yet. read more

Take two busy parents and twins with hair out of control (like an unmowed lawn), who desperately needed a haircut. Add in impossibly busy schedules and hellashish crabby mornings before school (lots of hair complaining), the loss of our regular stylist, the need to find a new one, and you get super horrible guilty parents. Did I mention one of my son's decided he wanted to completely change his look and chop his longish locks off? Yep, where the heck were we going to find a new stylist ready to deal with my kiddos' super impossible wavy curly hair! Problem #1) Find a new stylist...and pronto. Problem #2) Fine a new stylist...and pronto...who will give my boys the cut of their dreams. Solution: Meet Emily! Emily was sweet and confident, and took the dream picture my one son found online and transformed his hair into the photo and now he's over the moon! Now take twin #2 with longish wild and wavy thick locks, who only wanted a trim so he could keep growing it long. We knew it was going to be a challenge without a photo of some sort (because he thinks he has straight hair), and sadly we ended up with a cut that he's not in love with, so we need to go back and get some tweaks :-( We still love Emily, but I'm hoping we can figure out a cut that will work with his hair now. I have no doubt we will find a solution. I really love Salon Vole. They are independent, flexible with scheduling, and the staff seems to be absolutely lovely. My haircut was amazing! I am so picky about how my hair is done and Amanda did a great job. She cut it perfectly straight and listened to all of my concerns. I walked in with extremely long dead hair and expected to only get a few inches off but was pleasantly surprised and ended up getting a ton cut off. Only reason I didn't give five stars is because I personally wasn't a fan of the way my stylist styled my hair after cutting (she did a good job just not my style) and the ladies at the shampoo bowls weren't pleasant. read more

I have been going to Maria for over 20 years. She listens to what I want and has always had my interests in mind when she makes suggestions. I have very curly hair and have gone through many stages (short, long, straightened, curly) and Maria can work through any to make my hair the best it can be. They also have good hair products for curly hair. Carmen, who washes hair etc, is always cheerful and does a nice job. They have a new place right next to City Park Grill. Often times people write to complain, but there aren't enough praise reviews. I want to say that if you want a fantastic cut or style you should go to Salon Vole and see Maddie. She is so great at knowing what you want. I recently had a haircut by Maddie and also got my wedding hair done by Maddie. Not only did I get a million compliments, but I had my hair up for about 14 hours, and not one bobby pin itched or hurt me. And after a night of dancing I had not one hair out of place! She's also a great conversationalist so when you go there you feel like she cares about what you want, and who you are. She even spent extra time making my hair look extra perfect and making sure all my bridesmaids were happy with their hair. I really can't say enough good things about this place and about Maddie. I am happy too because I've gone to the same salon for about the last 15 years, and I feel happy changing salons going to Maddie! read more

He gives a great cut and is superb at what he does- styles to your face. I was getting buzz cuts and he said I shd let it grow longer and more natural. Softer look. I want to be clear that this review is specifically of my experience getting tape-in extensions at this salon. I had gotten a haircut here, and they did an excellent job. However, they are just not very experienced at tape-in extensions and I recommend going to someone who specializes them. I came in asking for help with my clip-in extensions and was highly recommended to do tape-ins. I had thought about tape ins before, so I was open to trying them. Between the ordering of hair and installation, it ended up costing me $700. This is a lot of money, but I would probably be ok with it if the extensions held up. However, mine kept falling out, the way they were installed made it almost impossible to wash my hair, so it constantly felt dirty, and since my hair naturally has frizz to it in the summer, I could never put product in it though it desperately needed it. Eventually, when a lock of hair slipped and the salon didn't have anyone on staff to help me that day, I went to a different salon. From going there, I learned that my hair really needs keratin before tape-ins, that the glue that was used on my tape ins at Vole put air pockets in my tape-in sandwiches, which is why they kept falling out, and that the installation was done way too high, so they were becoming visible. By the end of first 2 months I had had over 5 pieces of hair fall out! And I was so careful to avoid them in washing and brushing my hair started matting around them. I ended up having to spend another $400 to get the keratin treatment and proper installation at a new salon, but my hair finally looks like its supposed to. Again, I am sure Salon Vole is excellent at haircuts, dies, etc., but I feel like I spent $700 for my hair to look terrible for 2 months, so I would recommend going somewhere else for tape in extensions. read more

I could easily write two separate reviews for Salon Vole. Usually, Emily is our stylist and she is great with the whole family. She understands what type of cut you are looking for and is warm and friendly. However, the front desk staff and some other stylists cannot be bothered by customers. They are cold, unconcerned, unfriendly, and quick to judge. My husband scheduled an appointment with a different stylist, as Emily was out of town, and he was met with icy silence. The stylist acted as though her time was being wasted, after which she insulted my husband because he looks young. We are amiable people and if you have a job in customer care, service, and/or satisfaction, you should be willing to speak kindly to every customer, even if they are not from highland park. I found this salon 2.5 year ago, after living in Chicago for 10 years and having easy access to stylish, modern salons with talented stylists, I found the transition to the salon situation in the suburbs less than awesome. I have been seeing Christine at Salon Vole since that time and have been very happy with her work. She both cuts and dyes my hair - and she does a great job at both of them. I'm pretty boring hair-wise and she has done an excellent job of very slowly pushing me outside of totally boring - and she's correct and I'm very happy with it each time. This salon is really nice and clean, and everyone seems friendly. The only reason why I am not giving it 5 stars is because I feel that their prices are very steep. I had a color touch-up and haircut, well, trim really and it cost me $120 (with tip = $150). Definitely much more expensive than what I used to pay in California and I went to nice salons, 'cause I don't like to take risks going to "cheap" salons. I don't mess around when it comes to my hair. =D Crystal took care of me and I like her. A day later and my hair still looks great, doesn't it always after a visit to a salon? ;-) So far, so good. I'm hoping that once I wash my hair, it would still look nice even without styling it. But I would definitely go back, especially since it's only about 1.5 miles from the house. :) read more
