I went to this salon after the woman I have been seeing for 20 years moved away. Trying something new, I scheduled with Sol. This was such a great experience. She really walked me through what I wanted (of course I brought in a photo from Pinterest) and she went over lengths, where my bangs should land versus the picture, etc. Then we dived right in. Let me tell you, you could not tell me anything as I left this salon. I went to do every errand I could think of to show off the hair. Overall. 10/10 the salon itself is very beautiful. He offered me a full refund, but I asked if someone more qualified can redo my hair as I was so unhappy with it. I was very happy and impressed by Mark's professionalism and willingness to get it right. I scheduled with Akane and she completely fixed my hair. She took her time and made sure I was happy with each step. I am blown away by how nicely she transformed my hair. I will come back here again only for Akane! She was incredible!!! I went into the salon for a scheduled color appointment. After the the color was completed the hairdresser, Rhiannon, asked if she could cut my hair. She had cut it a couple of months ago and I told her that I was letting it grow. She asked me again if she could cut it and I told her no. She asked me if she could trim it and said that I would have a wedge if she didn't trim it so I told her ok to trim. She CUT MY HAIR! And charged me for it. I had my first visit with Akane for a haircut and I ended up going back for highlights because I loved her work that much. She is so sweet and gentle and listens to what you want. I walked in and told her I didn't like having long hair so she gave me a cute long pixie. I then showed her images of how I wanted to color my hair and she delivered. I want to start by saying I am genuinely sad to be leaving this review. I'm a Pasadena local and have been to Salon XIA 3 times now. Two great experiences and, unfortunately, one really bad one as of today. My first time coming to Salon XIA I met with Mark for a big healthy haircut and he was so welcoming and kind that I knew I'd come back to get some color. A few months later, I came back to go from a faded red to a darkest brown with Fiona. I loved Fiona's energy and she made me look striking with a darkest brown (that turn out a little darker than we hoped but was still gorgeous!). I liked Fiona so much that I actually recommended her to a friend of mine who saw her as well an had a wonderful experience. A week ago, I made an appointment for today to get that darkest brown root touched up and to get some curtain bang/face framing since my engagement photos are in just a few days. I intended on booking with Fiona but due to my budget, I couldn't afford her rate. There was a significant price difference for her and another stylist Akane so I chose another stylist for a root touch up/cut/blow dry. That is where it felt like my first mistake had been made when yesterday, I revived a text from Akane about my color/roots and then a call from Fiona and then a call from the salon. It was a lot all at once! It started to feel like drama over who I booked and I felt uncomfortable having to explain my choice was for financial reasons (and a little because my darkest brown stained my pillow for a week or two after my color with Fiona but that felt like not her fault and just product) but mostly the pricing that worked for me. Anyways, I came to my appointment today already a bit anxious about yesterday, thinking I upset people for booking someone new, but everyone was very nice. I felt like my roots were done decently but she did not actually match my previous color and decided we needed to go lighter and then blend it if I wanted auburn hair for my wedding in a year (something I mentioned as a maybe and had a hard time explaining it was just an idea). It isn't VERY noticeable but in the right light but you can tell that the roots are dark brown and the rest of my hair is black. Something I sure hope doesn't show in my engagement photos. Now, here's where it all went wrong. I started to see I didn't love the two tone colors (as subtle as it was) and so I got quiet. She kept asking me "are you okay?" and I was fine... processing my thoughts about the color as she was drying...until I wasn't because I was getting uncomfortable with the constant asking. So I started just talking about other things until it was time for my cut. I showed her my Inspo picture again and reiterated "curtain bangs and face framing layers" and she replied she understood and would texture and cut "about 1 inch". She kept cutting and cutting and it got shorter and shorter with no layers or framing in sight yet and I started to panic. Another ask of "are you okay?" came and I said "no I'm not, I didn't ask for short and you keep cutting. This isn't what I wanted" she also then started to panic and continued to cut. I said "please stop cutting I don't like this I didn't want length gone- I have engagement photos in 5 days". She then said "I need you to not be uncomfortable" which really felt wrong to say and in fact made me waaaay more uncomfortable. Then she said "what do you want me to do to fix it?" And, unfortunately, I didn't have that answer. It felt like there was nothing left to fix without going shorter and I'm not a trained stylist so I couldn't answer that properly. Finally, she grabbed another stylist (I'm so sorry I never caught her name but bless her) who stepped in and fixed what she could to give me some shape, resulting in a layered Bob I did not intend for. It was what it was, I was just ready to leave. I was not charged for the cut but I was charged for the color and when I was checking out I felt so pressured by Akane as I was filling out the tip and running my card for $100 still with roots I was not satisfied with either that I was shaking and staring to have a panic attack from the experience. She once again asked if I was okay and I do apologize for having to say "no, I'm not and please don't ask me again because it is making my panic attack worse". I ran my card and ran out of there to my car to cry. Mark, I am so sad for this experience and feel I will not be back to your salon. Fiona, I am terribly sorry for not rebooking with you to know I was in good hands- I was only trying to make my budget work. To the stylist that stepped in, thank you for your calm and kindness. I went in for a consultation on 06/27/24 that was scheduled weeks prior for 5:00pm with Dayra. The Salon receptionist called me on the same day of the appointment at 3:47 pm to be exact stating Dayra was running behind schedule so they moved me at 6:00pm, which I agreed things happen. I went in, she cut a strand of my hair to test if my hair will resist discoloration. Dayra informed she will do the discoloration test and send me a text later on that day, I left home waiting all evening for the results, gave her the benefit of the doubt and waited the next day 06/28/2024 I even texted her at 12:00pm for an update and received no response. I got the cold shoulder, I'll rather for business to be direct and tell me if they are not willing to service you than ignore you. My time is valuable as well as your time and the respect should be mutual. If she can't be trusted with time then I can't trust her with my hair. read more

Claudia was recommended by a friend for my first haircut since the shutdowns. She did an incredible cut and gave me lots of tips for my fine, wavy texture. I can't wait to come back. I've been continuing to come back to Mark every 8 weeks for a trim this past year... But I wanted to update my review since i have now gotten my hair colored by him 3 times. I asked him for sun kissed highlights with a shadow root to keep it low maintenance... and he has delivered! I love the hint of blond and how it lightens up my whole look. I get compliments on it all the time. He also recommended that I get a gloss every time I color. This has kept my hair looking so healthy and shiny even with the bleach. I want to share my experience with Dayra in this review. I visited her three times with the goal of lightening my hair. However, during the third appointment, instead of bleaching my hair as discussed, she applied dark permanent color to the previously bleached sections. Dark color is hard to remove wether it's box or salon.This setback in my hair lightening journey was frustrating. Adding to my disappointment, she cut my hair much shorter than what I had requested, and when I brought up my concerns, she insisted it was what we had agreed upon. Not only was it too short, but she also needlessly thinned it out. I recommend asking for a price breakdown before starting any services as Dayra rents a chair and determines her own prices.The pricing was inconsistent, and sometimes she struggled to provide a clear final price. Her receipts are not itemized. When I reached out to Mark, the salon owner, about my experience, he explained that he couldn't intervene since Dayra rents a chair and his specialty lies in haircuts, not hair color. He said he could fix the haircut but I didn't want my hair any shorter,so this wasn't a solution for me. Ever since my hair started growing back after chemo, it's been coming in crazy!! It's super curly and got super afro-y which made it hard to maintain with product. I stumbled upon some reviews for this place and noticed that the owner does a lot of Locks of Love donations and just assumed he would be good at fixing up short hair since that's the end result after donating all of it. When I called to make an appointment, the receptionist was super super friendly and helpful. She didn't mind going through many options to make sure I got an appointment convenient for my schedule. When I arrived, I was astounded by how beautiful the interior of this place is. It's an old house converted into a salon, but it's sooo chic and wonderful and CLEAN!! Seriously, I didn't see any dust and this place has hardwood floors. I think the same receptionist was there when I arrived, and she was just as friendly. She even offered me something to drink even though I had starbucks in my hand. My appointment was with Mark and he came and introduced himself when I got there which was sweet. I got my hair washed and was put in a chair. I explained to Mark that it was very hard for me to be getting a haircut since my goal is to grow out my hair from being bald. I told him that I needed to maintain it better and also asked if he could show me how to blow dry my curly hair straight and/or style it in a different way than I had already been doing. He was totally helpful from the moment he began his work. He showed me how he was cutting my hair and the desired effect, and walked me through blow drying it. We made really nice conversation too and I learned a lot about him as a person, not just a hair stylist. He cleaned up the sides and back of my hair and left it top heavy to allow it to grow and have spill over effect for when it gets long. The way he blow dried it was so great too. He recommended product and when I said I would wait to purchase some due to my budget, he gave me some product to try at home for free!!! Who does that?! No one these days!! My experience with Mark and this salon has completely melted away my anxiety when getting hair cuts. I am so thankful I took a chance here and will not go anywhere else from now on!!! read more

I called around noon because I suddenly realized that the color I had done else where the day before left me, not blonde, and I REALLY wanted to be blonde. So despite the $140 I had dropped at another salon, I called asking for help. The receptionist asked me what I was looking for and VERY wisely signed me up for consultation and reminded me that she wouldn't give me a quote, and the session was 15 with a stylist that did have the time to do a color should she decide my hair was healthy enough BUT not to expect to have anything done, because the consultation was to see how healthy my hair was and if it was too damaged to color. I got Gillian who was very nice. She looked at my color, asked me what I had gone in to get, and what I didn't like about it. I had a funky hair cut, it was always brown on one side, and blonde on the other split down the middle. the blonde side was also short like a bob, and the brown side was shoulder length (it's a funky japanese style color split down the middle). I told her I didn't like how gray my blonde side was and how much it darkened my hair (see the before and after photo I uploaded). I also didn't like the peanut brown on the long side, though it was nice, it was brassy and too close to my skin tone. She gently lifted the toner first, then fully dried my hair so we could see what we had. My roots were weird colors, so we went ahead and bleached it gently, and treated the long side to even it. (See my photo upload), she FOILED each section of my roots so the bleach wouldn't touch the too damaged part of the strands. it was METICULOUS. and it took foreverrrrrr but it totally came out great. She REALLY concentrates on her work, and I was falling asleep but she still carefully did my hair, layer by tiny-tiny layer. She was also very nice, and friendly, and I felt like she really understood what I was trying to explain about color and asked me to be sure, when other stylists in my past have just gone, "yup I can do that" and it coming out nothing like what I meant. 4 hours later, and my hair was nice again! It was the colors it had been originally (before I got the weird dye job). Bang trim, and I came out to about $300. Moral of this story is, go to the right person the 1ST time and avoid having to pay up to $500 getting it dyed, then dyed back, and being back where you started. T.T read more

I wanted to donate my hair to "Locks of Love" charity and was looking around a salon that has some experience in hair donations. I found Mark and Salon Xia on Yelp.com and due to the rave reviews I decided to try it out. Mind you, I have hung around Pasadena forever and never knew this street existed. Parking was a little bit of a pain since there's pretty much only street as the Salon lot is really small....and it's close to one-way streets....The Salon itself was really nice and clean. It's in a old converted house with lots of character.....The staff was very curteous and friendly..... Seems like everyone knows everyone there. I was offered something to drink as soon as I walked in. Mark didn't keep me waiting at all as he finished up with a previous client. He listened to me as I explained what I wanted done and he even suggested a few alternatives for my hairstyle as I was going from very long to very short. He's a very friendly guy and he spoke about how he supported the Locks of Love charity. He did a superb job on my hair and afterwards even took care of sending the hair in for me. The next day, when I went to the office, I got so many compliements. Best of all, my boyfriend, who was pretty apprehesive about me cutting my long hair, loved the new short-hair cut! I had a great experience at this cute, little boutique salon. Mark (the owner) is an experienced, knowledgeable stylist who is very friendly. He gave me great partial highlights and a good haircut. The only drawback is parking. There is a private lot, but you have to pay cash into the little box marked for each spot. So, remember to bring cash! I decided to try this place because of a Groupon deal for a cut and blowout. I came here approximately 6 months ago. My hair is thick and long, almost down to my waist. My best friend usually cuts/trims my hair but when she's busy, I usually just go to Supercuts or Fantastic Sam's. I'm not too impressed because the result is nothing out of the ordinary. Although she was friendly, I didn't appreciate how I felt she kept pushing me to cut my hair shorter. I've always liked my hair long and I like to keep it that way. I told her I wanted to cut an inch off the bottom; I simply wanted a trim. She first suggested that I should cut 2 inches and I was okay with that. But she suggested again that I should cut more, maybe at least 4 inches because my hair is too long. But... That's how I like my hair . Anyway, if you've ever been to an Asian salon, where the person cutting your hair keeps insisting that you're better with this hairstyle or whatnot, this felt like it. I felt so pressured and I ended getting my hair cut 3 inches off the bottom. I think I rather go to a chain salon where they'll do exactly how I want for a better price.
