Dance instructor with a, um, younger student

It's fun. It's outdoors. It's unpretentious. It's casual dress. It's an event to meet regulars or become a regular yourself. It's Salsa On The Promenade. This is a completely different vibe than any club in greater Los Angeles. Instead of a crowd that's either "I'm cool and you're not" or "I'm too sexy for my shirt", these dancers just want to have fun. They appear to be more accepting of beginners than at a place like the Conga Room. The big problem is trying to figure out, of the crowd standing on the sidewalk, who is waiting for a dance and who is watching the show. And like most places, people tend to dance with people that they know *can* dance. I don't think this concept will work everywhere; where I live, organizers have a hard time keeping their version going. But it's been going for a long time in Santa Monica. If you dance salsa, bachata, cumbia, merengue, etc., then stop on by if you're in the area on a Sunday night.

Oh the memories! This was such a highlight of being an amateur salsa dancer in southern Cali. The atmosphere is so friendly here and there are far fewer creepers than in those dimly-lit clubs. The organizers of this event are very kind and the entire group gets together, especially for Rueda! Very full of life and the passerbys seem to enjoy watching. The floor is the only downside- stone! But the silver lining is less ladies wear heels so that 1) you'll be less likely to have have your foot maimed by some partner's unstable heels and 2) people actually allow themselves to let go on the floor! Looking forward to coming back here!

So you think you've seen or heard of everything on the promenade, but chances are this has slipped past you somehow. If you happen to make it to the other end of the promenade on a Sunday afternoon/evening after you passed all the shops, food vendors, and street performers then you'll be rewarded with enjoying something truly unique - organized salsa dancing on the promenade. From 4pm-8pm every Sunday now (it use to be summer months only but with the increased popularity, it's year-round pending the weather) people flock here to get their salsa fix. Shortly before 4pm, there'll be nothing to indicate what is to come. All of a sudden a DJ comes rolling his equipment in a cart and sets up shop. The first 60-90 min, there might only be 2-10 people dancing at any given time; it might not seem like much, but give it time. People like to make an entrance, others don't like to dance in the hot sun, others just like to dance when there is a crowd. Soon enough there will be upwards of 20-40 dancers tearing up the promenade. With the dancing crowds come all the tourists taking photos and recording videos (which will shortly be uploaded onto Youtube). There are no lessons, just dancing. Given the nature of this event, there aren't too many beginners out there, but they sure are welcomed. Most people that come here are regulars and are well-polished dancers that love the audience and limelight. You'll see women rocking their pumas while others maneuver their way on the cobblestone with 3+ inch heels - it's a wide variety of people that attend from all different backgrounds, ages, dance styles etc. This event is free but donations are appreciated to cover expenses i.e. batteries, permits etc. It can get hot so bring water/sunscreen/backpack etc. or you can walk over 50 feet over to the Borders and pick up some water for $2 or less. It's located in front of Monsoon Cafe which also has salsa dancing, but there is no affiliation. Also, last time I went, it didn't get started until 6pm which I hear is unusual. Stumbled across this group Sunday night while walking back to the car. It looked like fun, so we stopped and danced. OK, I am so not a dancer, but no one cared and I had a great time. We didn't stay long but are definitely going back. Every experience level from fantastic to barely hanging in there like me. Found this link about it http://www.salsahook.com/archive/details/2011/06/15/96/Street-Dancing-Salsa-Dancing-at-Third-Street-Promenade-in-Santa-Monica-CA Know before you go... 1. north end of 3rd Street Promenade, between Arizona Ave and Wilshire Blvd, 2. picks up around 6 PM and goes on until about 9 PM, weather permitting 3. Donations are welcomed to keep the dancing going and investment in portable batteries and the equipment that makes it all possible.

    Wonder night to dance!

Fun dancing outside. It's been many years so I'm not sure if it's still there. If it is, you should try it if you like Latin dancing.

The batting cages caught our eyes through the window, but once we went inside, we discovered you could also play tennis, lacrosse, cricket, and padel. Each cage had virtual screens with scoring (think Top Golf, but with racket/paddle sports) and you can rotate between all the sports in one reserved lane. There's a bar in the back giving it a Lucky Strike-ish feel and there's also a foosball table and pool table. The two of us played a quick half hour just to try it, but could have easily played for over an hour plus and had a full-on date night here. Great place for groups, big and small, and glad to have a fun entertainment space in downtown Santa Monica!

You can switch off between each sports and absolutely no experience or skills are necessary. We were told golf will be added in the future but not sure when that will happen. There are also several arcade games, foosball table, pool table, AND skee-ball machines!! How cool is that?! The place also has a small private room and a bungalow, along with a back area with 2 bars where they also serve food. Upstairs: there's another batting cage and an area to just chill and hang out. There are a bunch of tv's throughout the place, I believe they sometime have sports/watch parties. This would be such an awesome venue to host a birthday party or work/group event. Overall: great place to hang out before or after spending time at the nearby Third Street Promenade and the Santa Monica Pier, which are both only a few minutes walk away. Friendly staff is also a plus! Parking: several public parking structures (#1-7) are located nearby that are all within about a 5-minute walk. Parking Structure #1 is probably the closest one, just down the street. About a 2-3 minute walk.

ARTime BARRO is part pottery studio, part community space, and is a relaxing, chill place where you can unleash the creativity you thought was dead, where your artistic spirit gets to come out to play, if only for just a little bit of time in this crazy world. On a recent weekend, I had the opportunity to take the One-Time Class, which is a one-hour course designed for complete beginners. You get to make two pieces, one by hand at the table and one on the pottery wheel. The class size was small (just 5 people) and we got great 1:1 instruction and guidance from our knowledgeable instructor Max. I've always wanted to try the wheel and was surprised how hard it was to use it but it was such a great experience that I think everyone should try at least once. After you sculpt your pieces, you are invited to come back to hand paint (glaze) your work at no additional cost. You can also have them do a one-color glaze for you, but after I saw all the multi-colored pieces of other folks previous to me, it was no contest to decide that I wanted to color my pieces myself. You have up to 3 months to come back to glaze so it's very doable in anyone's busy LA (corporate) lifestyle. Pricing was very reasonable for such a cool bespoke experience. There are a lot of pottery painting studios (e.g. Color Me Mine) but this is awesome bc you get to make the pottery AND color it later! I've already recommended this place to countless people!

Harvelle's is the latter. Tucked close to the beach in Santa Monica, this tiny little place might not look like much at first. The setup is a tightly woven arrangement of vintage chairs and tables, with a long row of couches hugging the wall. But once you're inside, you realize they have their reasons for their layout. If you're lucky enough to grab a front-row seat or one of the coveted bar stools, you'll start to notice the details: metal pipes, and rods that spark the imagination. You're in for a treat! What I really appreciate about Harvelle's is that they don't charge you an arm and a leg for tickets. The artists are humble, talented, and consistently engaging. I've been to burlesque shows where the performers feel like they're just there, going through the motions. But not at Harvelle's. Every time I've gone, the women bring something artful, classy, and unapologetically bold to the stage. It's burlesque, yes, but not cheap in style or spirit. Anytime a friend's visiting from out of town, this is the spot I take them to. It's a must-see in Santa Monica. And honestly, what other place is giving you burlesque seven nights a week?
