What really made the visit special was meeting Cat, the woman with the hair scarf. She was incredibly knowledgeable and gave such detailed, thoughtful explanations about every flavor. We were lucky enough to taste almost all of them, and she was so patient, friendly, and genuinely enthusiastic the entire time. Salt & Straw is one of my first Oregon loves. Back in the day, I remember waiting in line for way too long but it always being worth it because the service and ice cream is just that good. This location is one of my newest favorites because it's surrounded by so many good eats. We can have a meal and then grab a treat or vice versa. I also love that there is covered outdoor seating at this location with a fireplace. But the real reason for my current review is the launch of the Tacolate (aka a new and improved choco taco, which was my all time favorite ice cream dessert). It's that time of year again. It's time for the berries series that includes the Birthday Cakes and Blackberries (5 stars). This signature and seasonal July flavor is my favorite Salt & Straw flavor. I don't go to Salt & Straw as much as I used to, but I try to swing by in July to get this flavor. I don't usually like birthday cake. When the chunks of this colorful cake are folded in the creamy ice cream along with blackberry jam, it makes this an irresistible combination that I've had twice this month. I enjoyed the sweetness with varying textures in each bite. I ordered it as a split single scoop with Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons (5 stars). I became a fan of this year round flavor after I recently tried it at the Bridgeport Village location during a YEE. It had the good amount of delicious caramel. My husband tried a sample of the Banana Bread with Strawberry Jam, but he preferred a single scoop of his go to flavor, vegan Freckled Mint Chocolate Chip. My son loved his kids scoop of Double Fold Vanilla. They were fully staffed during each visit and ready to help if we wanted samples. The service was 4 stars. It's an ice cream place. A reasonably expensive ice cream place. The biggest drawback is the line. Super popular obviously. Both times we went we had to wait. (Again, for ice cream). The ice cream was better than average, but it was not the best ice cream ever. I had plain old vanilla, and it was a bit heavy and a bit stringy. Wanted chocolate, but all the chocolate had coconut oil (allergic). No seating indoors. Lots of seating outside, but again the crowds. I was able to try two flavors that I didn't in the past and was very happy with it. I got their seasonal flavor which was chocolate with potato chips. It was my first time having something that salty with chocolate and the combo went very well! I also got the lemon whey and that was super refreshing and delicious. Came in to try and lord! Was it packed!!! The line moves fairly fast so it wasn't a huge deal. Now, I've never ever seen the flavors they had anywhere else. Examples: honey lavender, strawberry with coconut water sherbet, and pear with blue cheese. Interesting, right?! They had tons of other wild flavors. It has taken several tries before I have been able to visit ANY location as there is always a long intimidating line whether it's a location in Portland, San Francisco, or Los Angeles. They must be doing something right. I had to come all the way to Portland, where it all began, in order step foot in the door. Until now, my experience was only through one of the food delivery service providers because I just could not wait in the line. It's our first time visiting this location yet we're not impressed. We ordered a kid sized single scoop with split flavor for our family guest, yet later we realized we were overcharged and paid for a regular scoop with split scoop fee. 2 minutes after we settled the order for our guest, we went back in line to place another order for ourself. When paying for our order, just because our family guest was standing by the entrance speaking to us, the clerk automatically assumed the ice cream held by our guest had not been paid for. We were chased down as if we had walked away with a free ice cream. The clark who handled both of the transactions demanded that we needed to pay for our guest's order. Luckily we had saved the receipts to my phone number, so we were able to show the proof that a separate order was just settled few minutes ago. Now the ice cream, all three flavors we orders tasted less flavorful with overpowering sugary tastes. Definitely not how we remember Salt&Straw used to be. Not sure if it's just with this location. Okay so full disclosure, I prefer SOFT SERVE so this can never be a 5 star for me but they have done a REALLY good job in bringing IN GREAT vegan flavors over the last few years. The freckled mint chocolate chip is INSANE and as close to perfect as an ice cream can be for me. But man alive the lines...30 minutes to wait for ice cream. How is this a thing? It's not THAT good but I do it for the kids. This location has mostly shaded area to wait, and a splash pad that opened on Friday 5/26, to keep everyone cool. Yesterday when we arrived, the line was to the end of the building, and it took 30 full minutes. Here's the thing, AS we got close, they had staff come out and give samples of what people wanted to try, which I thought was super smart. If only they could have started that sooner and had more staff...it just seems like WHY the lines still? It's not like their ice cream is cheap either. My daughter had her first Salt intro when she did an engineering internship in the Summer of '17. When we first visited the city to situate her with an apartment in '18, she had already given hubs and I the 411. So after an extraordinary meal in Portland recently, our ice cream selections made for a sweet note at this Beaverton spot located in the Cedar Hills Crossing. Salt is always on our minds because we know flavors are innovative and exciting- plus they use the freshest ingredients for both the regular dairy kind or Vegan types. By 10ish pm, this particular Salt was poppin. The swirl-around line actually does go by fast. So fast, that the young kids working the counter are such in a rush to make the line move at full throttle. While they do assist with spoons if you need a sample, in came the errors when we were here: when I asked for a cup, got a cone, when my daughter and her partner requested 'lids on', they got spoons in them. The kids working here are all nice- seriously. But they really need to breathe, pause a bit and truly listen to their customers. I had heard this place was "overhyped", but people couldn't be more wrong! I've never been a huge ice cream person, but love trying strange food, so I gave them a shot. I got the Arbequina Olive Oil and the Pear & Blue cheese. Both were delicious, but the olive oil one stole my heart! I could eat it every day. It might sound weird, but I think the blue cheese one could use more blue cheese. It was still REALLY good though, so if you're worried that one will be too weird, I honestly got way more of the candied pear taste. read more

This time I also tried the stawberry balsamic black pepper ice cream, and it was an amazing blend of flavors! (And it paired well with the chocolate hehe). Service is great here and fast. ONLY complaint, the layout inside is weird so you can't really use those standing tables without people thinking you're in line. They should've put the tables against the walls. (I know in the summer it's warm enough to eat at the tables provided outside, but what about ice cream in the winter?? I need indoor seating for that haha.) read more
