Saltlight Salon has been a great place for me to have my hair cut: conveniently located from my house in Downtown Lake Worth, warm and welcoming atmosphere, kind and professional hair stylists, and reasonably priced. For someone who is finicky about who cut his hair and where I go to do it, Saltlight has surpassed my expectations. I discovered Saltlight after needing to find another salon/stylist that could be a long-term solution, after the place I had been a loyal customer for 12 years closed down. Initially, I had looked for a place by my office but discovered most of them were too pricey for a men's cut. While you could argue I could have gone to Supercuts or any of those nonsense hair cut franchises, you get what you pay for as well. And none of those places would have done justice to my hair -- based on prior experiences. Fast forward to where I decided to find on Yelp a place that was closer to my house, and Saltlight couldn't have been more conveniently located (just a few blocks). A small, quaint establishment, Saltlight is nestled next to Common Grounds and across the street from the Book Cellar and Revelry on S J Street. With white-painted walls, the salon makes full use of its space with at least four (4) stations for hair styling, and a little lounge at the front for those waiting or hobnobbing with the staff on tweed-woven (I want to say tweed, but might be a different) chairs. They have a cute, antique desk where they serve water and snacks while you wait, or if you want something to eat in between snips, coloring, and styling -- depending on what you're having done. I scheduled my first appointment through Yelp with Laura, who was incredibly sweet, friendly, and knows how to cut my hair. I have been going there ever since. Even when she hasn't been able to do my hair, Erica has also done a great job. Every time I come in, it's like walking into one of my favorite haunts -- only, I'm just there to get my hair cut. You feel welcome and at home. Everyone knows you are, or at least knows you're a regular. You don't feel like a number in the crowd. Saltlight is one of the reasons why the block between Lake Ave and 1st Ave S on South J Street is becoming a very special part of Downtown Lake Worth. read more

Laura did my hair and color. She was so sweet and patient with me! I am not one who talks much when I get my hair cut but she was very friendly and made me feel comfortable. Pros: great customer service, they offer drinks (wine, beer, coffee, tea) and snacks when you enter, Laura took her time even though my hair appointment went waaaay past closing time. She didn't make me feel rushed and made sure I got the style I wanted Cons: it's a small salon newly opened in October and I happened to chance it on a busy day so I felt that Laura was spread a lil thin. Despite that she still took her time with me without rushing or skipping steps. Decor: very cute with quotes and flowers painted on the wall, there were fresh flowers at almost every station. I wish I could give 6 stars! I've been looking for a new stylist since my former salon moved. The hair experience, to me, is more than just the way I look when I leave. I want to be in a comfortable space with nice people who care about their clients. When I walked into Saltlight this morning Laura and Barry both greeted me like I was an old friend instead of a stranger. They immediately made me feel welcome. The salon itself gives a funky, artsy vibe. It's cool and clean and full of positive energy. Barry asked me some questions about my hair, my hair habits, preferences and style choices before he looked through some pictures I brought with me. I've gone to some of the most expensive salons in the Palm Beaches. I grew up in my grandmother's salon. There are some indicators of a quality hair cut and Barry had them all. He took his time, asked more questions and honestly listened to my answers. He gave me confidence in his skills throughout. I'm in desperate need of a color but didn't want to commit to that before the cut (booking my color now). Instead of root-shaming me and hard selling the service, Barry gently mentioned my color and opened the conversation to discuss it. We chatted comfortably the whole time. I didn't feel rushed out or like it was taking forever. And my hair... It's perfect! I'm growing my hair so it was very heavy with long chunks in all the wrong places. Now it's cute! It's a very, very good quality cut. It's trendy but classic. It looks light and healthy. Somehow Barry picked up on my styling choices too... He didn't make it too poofy or over done. This is exactly what I want in a haircut and blow-dry and I honestly expected to have to ask for a little more off here, a little less bounce there. It is perfect! She really looked at the 10 or so pictures of similar styles that I showed her, so she could get a feel of what I was looking for. To say I'm disappointed is a sickening understatement. I've given myself a number of weeks to adjust to this new cut and, Laura, I'm hating it just as much as I told you I did in your salon. I trusted you with my new growth after cancer treatments- losing my naturally springy ginger hair on my crown was difficult enough. I was fortunate to retain the thicker, deeper red hair below the crown almost down to my waist. When you moved to my neighborhood I welcomed you and promised the minute I was ready I'd be in for a new hairstyle. That my crown came in silver and white was a shock that I admittedly am not ready to embrace. That you chose to show me two full pages of very young models sporting white pixie cuts should have been my first clue. I made no bones about telling you exactly how much I hate short hair. Especially that dreadful pixie cut... I explained that I'm willing to go shorter, a bit below my shoulders, I explained because I have a birth defect in my neck that I wish to keep hidden behind longer hair. "Oh, I don't see that at all..." was your response. THAT should have been my second clue- that you would undermine something I'm telling you is a legitimate concern of mine. A vanity- but isn't that your business? Restoring my dignity and preserving my vanity. THE CUT: The front of my cut is adorable- but way, way too damned short so that it's not at all flattering to my full face and jawline. I explained, no matter what, I wanted my hair colored and styled so it looks cohesive and layered- but I wanted it longer to frame my face with a longer, layered look in the back- I'm shocked, and utterly dismayed that you not only ignored this directive, you cut my hair above the nape so it nestles above that dowager's hump I've absolutely hated since I was a little girl. THE COLOR I chose to go with my original strawberry blond- you suggested a glaze so we went with that. The first attempt was something we both laughed about- coming in not the soft red I wanted but very pale and slightly​ pink. The second attempt was depressing AF. And that's exactly what I said, choking and with tears in my eyes- it was a flat dark dead-mouse-brown. And you dyed that darker ginger hair below my crown even darker?? And why on earth did you ignore my definitive request to save my silver steak? I specifically told you I wanted to preserve that streak from my left temple, down to the ends. Remember? My "homage to Bonnie Raitte." That you chose to ignore this one detail... how damned disrespectful. The overall cut and color is appalling and so disappointing. I've tried letting go of my angst- after all, I've been through hell and this is just hair, right? So I tried just living with it but two months later? I'm still heartsick and quite angry about how all this went down. I waited to write this critique to give myself time to calm down and get used to this new look. But, nope, it's just awful. I put my hair into your hands, trusting you to do right by me. I expected you to respect me as a client. Laura, I don't understand why you just chose to ignore very specific directives: A longer cut to hide an unflattering hump, to keep my silver steak and a cohesive color and cut to bring the everything together... Going even darker with the lower layers was never discussed as an option. Life is too short to put up with a crappy hairstyle. I've received a bunch of comments i.e. "Oh, uh, you got your hair... cut?!" And NOT A SINGLE COMPLIMENT- my lovely friends are too polite- if they thought this was a good look for me, they would certainly say so. A pair of new acquaintances brought up my hair style, suggesting hair extensions, telling me frankly this cut doesn't suit me... which made me laugh, sadly, because we hadn't even discussed my personal dissatisfaction- they just think I need hairstyling help... I'll get over this as time passes, but this experience leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth. read more

What a wonderful, relaxing place to get a haircut. Both Barry and Laura are so kind and really work hard to make Saltlight different from your typical, chaotic salon. The space itself is beautiful and artistic, which fits in nicely with the local coffee shops and bookstores in the area. I had gotten extensions in Pennsylvania about a month ago, before I moved down to Florida, and I was never told about them or exactly how to care for them. When I found Laura, she not only fixed the mistakes that my previous hairstylist made, but she educated me on the extensions and how to care for them. I had been telling my stylist for over a year what I wanted my hair to look like and wasn't getting the results I was looking for. After complaining to my esthetician for sometime she called Laura and gave me the phone. I had just had my hair done the week before. Laura asked me to take a picture and text it to her. She was very easy to talk to and said she believed she could give me what I was looking for. Five weeks later it was time to get my hair done again so I decided to make an appointment with her. First I explained again what I thought I wanted then she pulled up lots of pictures to really get idea what she needed to do. I appreciated when she explained that my former stylist was close on the color but she was using the wrong procedure with my hair. She also recommended that I cut some length of my hair to give it more movement. When my husband saw me the first time he said it was the best my hair has ever looked and said it 3 more times over the weekend! For reference we have been married 28 years.
