Last minute decision to grab Pad Thai and Mongolian Beef for dinner. They had "run out" of summer rolls, but made some fresh for us upon order- a very nice gesture. Waited a few minutes for the summer rolls, which were very good. Waited close to an hour for the remainder of our food. Salad (hot cabbage) arrived two minutes prior to our entrees. All tasted very good. Disappointed by the minimal amount of beef in the Mongolian Beef, which, by the way, is plated on top of a generous portion of dry rice noodles.... All flavor was delicious. My husband and I are hard-pressed to find a place open on Sundays in Albany. Sam City is one of few options. Judging the book by its cover won't benefit you here. On the outside, yes, it looks a little cheap. But, even walking in the door, things improve. The food, which is what we should really be here to talk about, is great! I must admit, I always get the same thing: the Korean short ribs. Grilled, tender, short ribs with tons of sweet smoky flavor. Upgrade your rice to the Korean fired rice! Totally worth the extra two bucks. It has this lovely toasty flavor and it has grilled chicken in it. I also thoroughly enjoy their salad that comes with many of the meals. It's very simple, but whatever that dressing they put on it is, it takes things to a new level! My husband usually gets pho and he's never had one he didn't like (they have several options.) He is a seasoned veteran of the pho world, so I trust his opinion and I think you should too. I've never had a bad experience with service there. Everyone has their "off" days so I won't totally discredit other reviewers. But at the same time, I've been to Sam City many times at this point and have never had anyone be rude to me. The only reason I'm not giving them five stars is the last time I ate there, I had a bite of short rib that tasted just a LITTLE bit turned. I didn't say anything because the rest of my meal was perfect. I didn't get sick or anything like that. But, if the managers read this my only piece of constructive feedback would be to really watch those meats and make sure everything is very fresh. Their pho is alright, not very authentic or flavorful. The real issue is that their food has given me HORRIBLE FOOD POISONING TWICE and gave my boyfriend food poisoning once. This restaurant obviously doesn't follow food safety standards. Yesterday I decided to give them another try and got take-out because of COVID-19. The broth was plenty hot and the meat was cooked within it. The issue is that they gave the sides(bean sprouts, jalapeños, lime) in a ziplock back that looked VERY wilted. I, out of caution, did not eat those but I did use the lime included. I believe this is the culprit. If you love your stomach and don't want to vomit all night, AVOID THIS RESTAURANT! I went to Sam City based on the reviews from Yelp and I have to say I was severely disappointed with the quality of food I was served. My daughter and I ordered off the lunch menu with her ordering the chicken and broccoli and I had the combo chicken teriyaki and spicy pork. First the rice in both our meals was dried out and that was the best part of the meal. My daughter's meal was almost all carrots, the broccoli was soggy, the chicken was fatty (what chicken there was in the meal) and the sauce was watery. My chicken was burnt and fatty, the pork was fatty I couldn't take a bite without having a big piece of fat in every bite, and both meats were bland. Overall I would not recommend this place to anyone and suggest not wasting your money here, especially with it being overpriced for what you are served. read more

I LOVE Sam City! I was first introduced to pho in upstate New York and was disappointed that there were no restaurants serving it anywhere near my home in northeastern Pennsylvania. I moved to Albany this past fall and I was thrilled to find Sam City just a short drive from home. The pho is phenomenal - I usually get the seafood lover's and it's a good portion. My husband isn't a soup man, but loves the Mongolian beef, which is huge. There are also several tasty appetizers... we often order the summer rolls and the fried mushrooms (so good, I could eat a big pile of them for dinner). Service is always good and fast at Sam City, even on a busy weekend night. Appetizers are usually on the table within five minutes ordering (cooked appetizers take slightly longer than the summer rolls, though), and our entrees are almost always ready within a few minutes of us finishing our appetizers. We've never had issues with getting drink refills. Occasionally we get takeout... sometimes it takes a while for someone to answer the phone. However, the takeout is always ready in 20 minutes and they package it really well, especially the pho. read more
