This park is a beautiful area of greenery within the loop of Htown. There's a peaceful and serene pond area where you can watch the turtles perch on rocks and swim around and you can also sit on benches underneath cottonwood, live oak, sycamore, and palmetto trees while reading a book or just enjoying the nature and city sounds of your surroundings. Even as the Bayou City art festival was going on, I found some serenity here. Thereare also cottages and houses showcased by the Heritage Society that display a taste of Houston's past. read more

How have I lived in Houston for 41 years my entire life and I've never heard of this park. I'm glad I moved downtown because I'm one of my early morning walk. I just randomly found this part. Also, how does this only have 33 reviews. That goes to show a lot of people don't know about this part because if they did, this would have over 2000 reviews like the side of it. If you're from Houston, I suggest you come by here and walk this park. Lots of Texas history. Lots of old homes. Just an amazing place to walk. I'm blown away that I've never seen this before. Thankfully, that I got to see it this morning. If you're visiting Houston and you're not from here, this is a must stop. Local or not this is a must check out. I didn't see too many homeless people hanging around so you don't have to worry about that other than that, though I highly recommend checking out this park. You can do guided tours and pay for that or you could do a tour by yourself and just simply scan the QR codes or download the app to get the narrative version of each house. Beautiful views of the city and the back of the nice buildings behind this park. I had no idea that old cabin was even right there in the heart of downtown with all of the other homes. I've walked through this park many times but never actually took the time to go visit until I went to volunteer at an event held at this park; and I just have to say, wow, this park is beautiful. No, this is not the kind of park that you go to run. This is the type of park where you go to actually enjoy the weather, the scenery, or do a picnic. It's a beautiful serene park where you can feel like you're in one with nature despite the downtown buildings in the background. There are some historic old houses that (I presume) had been moved here and I saw signs saying that they offer docent-led tour as well, so that's something that I'm going to have to look into. As for parking, well this is downtown so you can either park in the streets or park inside of the new parking garages nearby. Anyway, if you've never been here I would recommend you go check it out at least once. If anything, you can take some pretty pictures with awesome backgrounds. read more

Sam Houston Park is a special place for me. My Grandfather was a sailor on the USS Houston CA-30 during World War II and there is a memorial to the brave men who both died during its sinking during the battle of the Sunda Straight and to those who survived, most who became prisoners of war of the Japanese. I was in attendance many years ago for one of the memorial services that occur every year during the reunions of the surviving crew members and the next generations. So it was a great honor to be able to come to Sam Houston Park and spend a few minutes reflecting and honoring the crew of the USS Houston. The park is spacious with lots of activities and learning opportunities for adults and children. The grounds are clean and well kept. A great park that will always be a special place for me. read more

Never been to this park but this was the hosting place of my 5k so what better time to try a new spot. It was a nice scenic area with access to longgggggg walking trail or it could have been a street, not really sure. It appears to be a nice spring or swinter spot with lots of trees for shade and some really awesome photo ops. It started raining and it was not majorly muddy so bonus points there. Sam Houston Park (often confused with Sam Houston RACE Park) is a tranquil green oasis in the thick of Downtown. As Houston's oldest park, it's surrounded by old, beautiful trees, houses monuments and historic buildings (like the 1891 St John Church) and with the stunning Houston skyline set as the backdrop. Most people have experienced this park before/after a race or for beer and wine fest but I recommended making the most of a gorgeous day and just head out there on your own for a self-guided walking tour. Or a picnic - yes, a picnic. During Wednesday's Urban Harvest Farmers Market at City Hall - just a few blocks away - head on over to the park with your fancy feast and take in the sites and the sun. This is a small, but historically important park adjacent to Downtown Houston. I typically visit for the Law Week 8K run every spring, but it gives me a chance to appreciate the green space. The park is near a central hub of freeways and other major roads going to and from downtown. It's not secluded from civilization. But that may be what makes it neat. Some of the main features are the altitude relief, as part of the park is on a plain, then it dips down to a beautiful pond with greenery. Along the way, plenty of benches and features. The features include a number of historic homes that have been relocated here to be appreciated in perpetuity. Small houses where you can look inside, sit on the porch, and I think walk through if you want. Just a bit of historic Houston right there. Parking is not the easiest. You'll have to snag some downtown spots by the hour or find yourself there otherwise. Great for a respite if you're already downtown, maybe not so much to just drive and visit. Houston does a better job than it gets credit for as far as parks go, and this is an example. Stop on by if you're in the area, good way to appreciate the city! read more

This is basically a park in downtown. It kind of funny how when I have saw this park the thought that ran into my head was this reminds me of a refinery. Well my dad worked in the petroleum industry. yes I have been to a refinery plant. Yes he has been to Houston many times as well. Well so when I saw these metal tube --- yes it resemble Houston downtown in some ways. Most of the businesses in downtown are either oil, gas, energy, lawyers or accounts. Yup that is Houston's business hub. All the big businesses. And in downtown there is this nice green park. So clean and nice here. read more

Wow this park is pretty cool with all of the historic houses, it makes you feel like you are walking through a neighborhood from the 1800's or maybe you are?! I volunteered in this park for the Breast Cancer walk. The park is huge. I will have to come back when the park is less busy. I will say I love the big trees and long branches that the park offers--its so beautiful and I bet it would be fun to climb the trees too. read more

The park/grounds are very nice. There is a pretty amazing collection of historical houses - definitely worth checking out. The reason for the relatively low star rating is the tour. To see the inside of the house you are required to go with a tour guide - which is fine. However, our guide was very biased, anti-Texas/Southern to the point of losing touch with factual reality. We heard about little more than slavery, which of course shouldn't be forgotten - but there is more to our history than that. Among other criticisms of our heritage, we were also informed that southerners bathed less than northerners. If you are Texan, or live here and like Texas - my suggestion is to walk around the park, read about the houses and avoid the tour. read more

I've been here plenty of times and didn't realize what this place was called. My most recent trip here was for the Race for the Cure. This was my 3rd year doing it and each year they hold all of the booths right in this park. This past year I took the time and relaxed after the race and just sat on the grass near the pond. It was amazing that such a beautiful park exists right in the heart of downtown. I must say parking around here is an issue but if you work near by and just want a moment away from your cubicle walk out and take a moment and enjoy the beauty that is tucked away here. read more

This is a medium size park that I stumbled upon in the northern part of downtown Houston. This was actually the first park created in Houston. What makes this place noteworthy is that they have preserved an old house and farm from the 1800s on the land and even operate as a museum. It was nice to walk around the gazebos and fountains here and soak in the Victorian architecture. read more

If Yelp allowed for 1 word reviews, my word would be Wow!!!! I'm not a frequent visitor of downtown because I loathe trying to figure out where to park, BUT I won free VIP parking for the event I was attending, so I decided to REALLY follow through and attend. The Garage I parked at (1100 Smith) is just a block away from the park. Initially, walking to it, it seems to be quite small, but they've jammed quite a bit of features into this park. The entrance opens up to several grand, historical buildings and additions to entertain the kids. There's even a chapel on site (didn't know it was a chapel until I was about to leave because it is pretty small) but the buildings are in top notch shape. There's a pretty spacious green area, which was used to setup booths around the perimeter as well as a yoga and dance area for attendees. It was not crowded at all with an attendance of 2000 plus to the walk I attended. There was also a nice little lake to chill at in the background. I really didn't get a chance to enjoy any of these features since I was either volunteering or participacting in the walk, but I would be very open to coming back. In fact, one of the attendees reminded me of the firework show that happens on 4th of July every year here. Always was skeptical of coming because I'm not a fan of crowds, but I'm going to get out my own way enjoy such a spectacular part of our downtown Houston infrastructure very soon. If you're in the area, you'll enjoy smelling the roses and walking the scenes of this park as well. read more

Houston's first park, Sam Houston Park, is a beautiful patch of green with giant live oaks with downtown Houston as a backdrop. Many downtown events are held in or near Sam Houston Park so we've had the opportunity to roam the grounds. The pond at the park is home to many little duck families that love to see people. We were lucky enough to see a mother with many babies the last time we were here. The old growth trees shade much of the park area, so it is nice enough to walk through and enjoy. The Heritage Society is also housed at Sam Houston Park. They have structures on the property that are available for tour. These historic homes are beautiful to see and expertly preserved by the Heritage Society. They dot the landscape of the park and make it easy to forget how near the traffic, interstates, and downtown you are. Whether you just want a quiet day at the park or want to learn more about Houston's history, Sam Houston Park is a wonderful destination. read more

This is the milling around/look shady/meet up with people Park for the beginning of the annual AIDS Walk. This park always seems so much larger once inside than it does as you walk by on the street or drive by in a hurried rush to get back to the office, so I think someone hit it with an undetectable extension charm, like Hermione's purse and Alastor Moody's trunk. This is a very green, well manicured, good lookin' park to hang out and look shady in. You feel enveloped in the city with all of the large buildings around you just a block or two away, as well as all of the history you are standing on as you shuffle your feet and wait for the Walk to begin (or one of the other charity-driven events which also use this as a good starting point.) read more

What a wonderfully tranquil park right next to downtown and in between two heavily-used thoroughfares! Tall trees, lush grass, winding pathes, and a pond. How amazing that this space, created in 1899 as Houston's first park, is still so peaceful. I have been visiting this park since I was a kid. On one edge are the historic structures of The Heritage Society, on another, a relaxing pond with many ducks and geese. Um...word of warning, don't chase geese; they have a bit of an attitude. When I was in grade school, my class would tour the homes, learn a little, then run amuck in the park until our teachers arranged our lunches. This time in the park (running and eating) was my favorite part of the field trip. Lots of trees to not have to fight over that one little bit of shade. I also relaxed by the pond during the most recent International Festival. The main, large stage was behind us, but the pond was free of the throngs of people and provided a nice place to rest in the shade; our sunburns were beginning to show. read more

This downtown park contains several old buildings reflecting on Houston's history. The structures are all old wooden houses. The park is nice to walk through and tour the buildings. On the other side of Allen Parkway the park has another section that contains other buildings and contains a small and interesting museum about Houston's past. There is also a commemorative obelisk paying tribute to,the USS Houston CA 30 that was sunk in the early days of WW II. I like this park. It is used frequently during the year for festivals and exhibits. It will take you approximately 30-45 minutes to tour through everything here. read more

We came here for the Colombian Festival and this year it was bigger and a lot more people came out this year. I think they are going to have to move the festival to a bigger park next time. It was way too crowded, and that doesn't help because it was super hot and humid. Anyway when ever I come here I always enjoy this park by city hall. It is right in the middle of Downtown Houston so you can see all the buildings it really is a great view. This is a great place to go because you are need alley theater, the bayou music center and the aquarium. I have been here for other festivals and the way the park is set up it is always well organized and protected by the Houston Police. The only thing we did notice is that we saw a lot of homeless people more than that I have seen in Houston. But they didn't bother anybody. read more

Sam Houston Park is home to the Houston Heritage Society and after reading all the other reviews, I wonder if I was even at the same place! Yes, the grounds themselves are nice, there are some huge old oak trees on the property and there are some hills that run down to the bayou, but beyond that, as an attempt to protect Houston's heritage, it's pretty lame. The Heritage Society operates a museum at the park and maintains several historical homes. The museum contains artifacts from a lot of places other than Houston (furniture from the Hill country, pottery from south Texas) but there are a few cool old maps and pictures of Houston back in the day. The largest display, a general store, isn't from Houston either. The museum is free, as is the park. To see the inside of some of the historical homes on the property will cost you $10. Don't waste your money. I was really disappointed in my tour guide. Maybe some of the others are better, but the one I got did a horrible job on the tour. Some of the homes are in really bad shape and the Heritage Society and Parks Department don't have the money to fix them. They try to include period furniture in each of the homes but it looks like they were happy just to have something prior to the 21st century in them. The furniture collections were really random and weren't always historically accurate. If you are interested in Houston history, save your money and take your cell phone to the park instead. They have a cell phone audio tour. If you are looking for some green outside of downtown, this park would be your place. read more

"Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park" Review: Our tour guide only let us walk thru 3 houses when there were a total of 7 structures and only 3 are allowed for a tour?? $28 for two people?!? And the tour guide talked about her personal life the entire time, and discouraged us from walking thru the church. Maybe because she didn't want to do her job? She knew little about the buildings' history. Tour guide also stopped to talk to a coworker about her work schedule...in the middle of the tour? It was extremely disappointing. Staiti House...her comments about the Italian heritage were bizarre and almost borderline worried we'd be concerned the home wasn't built by white people?! The biggest issue was we were NOT allowed to see all the structures for THAT price. You find out AFTER you pay. That is a rip off. Please consider dropping your ticket price if we can't see all. These buildings and artifacts are beautiful pieces and it's wonderful that we have them available in Houston. We needed more information and history from our tour guide to get the full experience!! read more

During my recent trip to Houston, on a bank holiday Monday I stumbled during my walk through the city upon this little green oasis of a park. To any historic nut like myself, you will find this park to be a gem. It was the city's first park, designated around the 1900's. In 1956, it became part of the Houston Heritage Society, and they operate a small museum at the corner of the property. Of course, being a bank holiday the museum was closed, but that did not dampen the experience of exploring the well preserved historical homes that have been moved here, as they had an easy to use informative cell phone tour that provided information about each site. The signs even had a map noting the different locations along the path (some of which are located across the street from the green park area). The park also had a quaint little pond, and large historic oak trees to rest under with a small children's play area. Because the museum was closed, we weren't able to get up and close to a couple of the houses located on the same side of the street as the museum, but you could still see them. It appeared that some of the buildings could be explored on the inside during opening hours. Loved my little journey through time while in downtown Houston. read more

However with your cell phone you can go on a self guided tour. There is a lot of walking so not suited for handicapped not in a wheel chair. Parking is very limited. Sam Houston park is located between so many other parks, that I often overlook. It wasn't until I saw a picture of it that I realized it has some character that I would appreciate. It offers a unique view of downtown with a historical element. Festivals and events are frequently held in the area, but it's not nearly as active as Buffalo Bayou Park, I look forward to exploring Sam Houston Park more in the future. read more

I came here just Saturday for the Ronald McDonald House Trafigura 10k and I must say wow...this park is nice and beautiful, its downfall is that its in downtown where all the cars are passing by and you wonder are the ducks going to be okay? And that people don't pick up after poop and that the water doesn't look very sanitary. But you know what, I think this place just needs a little cleaning, but even so or not, it is quite nice, and I bet its beautiful at night. I think if someone were to set up a tent and christmas lights all around...it would be absolutely adoring.
