The White Oak Bayou Trail has become one of my favorite places to ride, run, or just move through…read morethe city without the noise of traffic. I usually stick to the lower portion between downtown and 20th Street, and even though that's only a small piece of the full trail, it always delivers. The path is smooth and wide, and for the most part, you can travel for miles with barely any street crossings. It's one of the few places in Houston where you can feel totally connected but still completely removed. Starting near downtown, you pass through Buffalo Bayou Park, which is always buzzing with activity. You can catch some amazing skyline views here before heading north alongside the bayou. From there, the trail slips through a quieter stretch of green space--Stude Park--with plenty of trees and open lawn. A little farther up, you roll into White Oak Park, where the trail feels tucked away and shaded, perfect for an early morning ride. By the time you reach the 20th Street area, it starts to open up again, with more residential views and the edge of the Heights nearby. Right now, there's a bridge out near Stude Park--just past the MKT trail connection--so to stay on White Oak you'll need to detour briefly along the Heights Hike and Bike Trail. It's not a major hassle, just a quick diversion around the closure, but something to keep in mind if you're planning a longer outing. Even though I haven't gone the full distance yet, I keep telling myself that once the heat breaks and fall rolls in, I'm going to make a day of it. I'd love to bike the whole thing, from downtown all the way north, just to see how far this green ribbon really stretches through the city. Until then, this lower stretch of the trail has become a regular part of my workout schedule. It's clean, calm, and never feels crowded. Whether you're out there to sweat or just clear your head, it's one of the best-kept paths in Houston.

The path is wide and well maintained without bumps or holes, and it allows visitors to travel their desired distance without the inconvenience of traffic lights or stops at car intersections. While the path is used by a number of bikers, leisure riders, as well as more high performance athletes, it's also a great path to run or walk. The path has a number of signs to help mark significant street intersections so that you don't miss your turn. One of my favorite sections of the trail is the straightaway right near UHD - the downtown views are spectacular! Pull off to take a picture, or if you're confident, snap a shot during your ride!

Hines lake is a beautiful landscaped lake which features a lot of cool wildlife, awesome boardwalks, and pavilions for gathering. There are gorgeous water lilies and reeds and small trees! Only a few steps away from the lake, you can enter a wetland boardwalk, this closely mimics piney woods type of landscape with lots of loblolly pines, etc. informative posters surrounding the boardwalk help tell the story of the snags, and throws, that you can observe nearby. This quick detour loops right back towards the parking lot. You can really get lost here! I love how they preserved the nature of Houston in this park and made it enjoyable to walk through.

I was hoping to see more wildlife like birds and such but only saw a turtle. Very random -- wasn't expecting that. Might have been unlucky or there at a less-than-ideal time for birdwatching. Nonetheless, it's a great spot for a stroll and we're lucky to have such easy access to this place. Super simple parking as it's surrounded by residential streets on all sides. You can enter the park from any side. Highly recommended for nature lovers and anyone looking to disconnect for a bit.

There were some muddy areas along the trails despite the fact that it had not recently rained in a while. The park is located in the middle of the neighborhood and there is plenty of street parking nearby. Estimated length of time to explore the park: 30 min - 1 hour The park itself is a 20-acre forested area with a ground blanketed by fallen leaves and old oak and pine trees. The park features windy trails that cross paths with each other multiple times. If the park was larger, it might be easy to get lost. However, since you can see the streets surrounding the park through the trees it's no problem keeping your orientation. Even with the streets nearby and the soft sounds of cars driving by in the background, the forest felt relaxing and quiet. We absolutely loved the self-guided Wireless Wilderness audio tour provided by the park. There are multiple signs posted throughout the park with a phone number to call and a stop number to dial to learn about the ecology of the park. There are 16 stops that we found while wandering around. Overall, this park is definitely worth a visit!

The Moore's…read moreincredible log cabin still stands and is open to visitors to read up on the history and the many species of wildlife. The volunteer staff there does an amazing job. The sanctuary is deceptively large with a great trail system. You will get both a good work out and pictures of nature. This truly is a hidden gem in Houston. Species we saw: Hermit Thrush, Carolina Wrens, Robins, Cardinals, Downy Woodpecker, Spotted Gars, Broad Banded Water Snakes, Broad Headed Skink, Five Line Skink, Red Eared Pond Slider, Eastern Mud Turtle, Green Darner, Yellow Crowned Night Heron, Morning Doves, White Winged Doves, Blue Catfish, Eastern Grey Squirrels, and the biggest Swamp Rabbit I've ever seen.

So, someone at HQ needs to update the name to something other than Harris County. Anyhow, I come here to park my car and ride on the bike trail on the opposite end of Brays Bayou. It's the beginning of the trail system. But parking is scarce. I can only come here on my weekdays off. There's no way to exercise at this tiny park. It has a paved asphalt path of less than 100 feet long and 10 feet wide. It's like a long driveway. It has a gully at the end of this fenced pavement. It's fun to watch hundreds of birds playing on the bayou bed. No, you can't go down there to play with them. The major attractions of Stein Family Park are the giant play area surrounded by well-maintained grassy area. I talked to a maintenance guy. He said the entire play area is available for rent. Besides play sets, there are picnic tables, BBQ stands and fully functional restrooms. He told me he comes daily. I don't know the cost, but you can find it by calling the number on the sign.

But other than that, it's pretty nice. There's a large field for people to play soccer, football, tag, etc. There are multiple attractions for the kiddos to enjoy themselves.
