It's been a while (too long) since we have been here. I won't make that mistake again. The BBQ sandwich with slaw for lunch with a side of collard greens was perfection. My 3 yr old was with me and we got the chicken tenders kIds meal (enough for an adult to eat) and it was exactly what we needed to put a smile on his face. I don't write many reviews, but, in this case, I have to. Admittedly, I am extremely critical of most ribs and usually prefer my own over anything I eat out. However, Sam Jones hit it out if the park. It is so rare that anyone makes ribs that don't require sauce to enhance the flavor and make them taste somewhat like slow smoked ribs. In this case, adding sauce ruins the amazingly seasoned, perfectly cooked, succulently smoked ribs at Sam Jones. The meat stands on its on and that's hard to do! Some of the best ribs I've had and I've had rims in Memphis, Kansas City, St Louis, Texas, Atlanta and many, many other best places for ribs. Can't wait to get back to Greenville and repeat the experience! Also should add portion size was very generous! Dismayed to see so many young employees ignoring COVID precautions, there were probably 5 people in the take out prep area, and no one was wearing a mask. Best bbq chicken breast I've ever had. The bbq pork was good. I could tell it was spit cooked pork. I used some of the 2 sauces on the pork to sauce it up a bit but it would be good without it. The coleslaw was exactly the way I like it. A little sweet but I like that. Mac and cheese was good. It had real cheese so A+ in my book. The corn bread was the only thing I didn't care for. It was very dense. I like a more fluffy cornbread texture. This was like concrete bread. I ordered an extra slice because of how much I love cornbread. Miss on the bread. And finally the strawberry pudding. It was vanilla pudding mixed with vanilla wafers cookies crushed up and mixed with whip cream and strawberry topping. Absolutely superb. I enjoy good barbecue and it was good but there is room for improvement in the salad department so I decided to post a honest review in hopes that it will be read and help improve. I got a barbecue sandwich and baked beans which was good with the exception that the bun did not seem very fresh. My wife got the house salad which was a ample bowl of ice berg lettuce with 2 cherry tomatoes, 2 slices of cucumber, some shredded cheddar cheese and 2 croutons. Maybe this is the the norm but we thought it was a pitiful attempt and left with her hungry and a huge bowl of lettuce on the table after a $25 tab. Sadly the bbq was merely good and a little dry so nothing really impressive, mac and cheese was pretty good, potato salad was interesting couldn't quite place it but there was something reminiscent of Aunt Bea Taylor's kerosene pickles to the taste, cornbread if that's what it was, was flat dense and rubbery without flavor, I've never experienced anything quite like it. This is not the first time I've been to SJ's bbq, but the first time I've yelped about it. Tonight I had the smoked turkey plate with Mac and cheese and baked beans (plus sweet tea and corn bread) for under $13. I ate it before I could get a photo, but you can see the photos I took during other visits. The turkey is so great! So much so, that I have ordered it to serve at my thanksgiving dinners for the past 2 years!! Mac and cheese was great as always and the baked beans have actual ground pork sausage from the hogs they smoke. Their chicken is great, as is the catfish sandwich. I like their pork bbq more than B's (sorry), but as with all NC bbq, I pour a ketchup based sauce on it that I bring with me from home. I apologize, I know that is probably sacrilegious to do around here, but I grew up on Kansas City style bbq, so I just gotta have that sauce! The only thing I'm not a fan of is the cornbread, but as I understand it, the recipe is what his family started out doing eons ago and they're not going to change it anytime soon. Too dry? Too dense? Yes it is...so try the sweet potato bread instead. They also serve alcohol in the restaurant which is pretty taboo for traditional southern bbq joints, but who cares? I had high expectations coming here. Place is run by kin of the Starlight Inn, so big shoes to fill. Place was order up front. Beautiful space, with some kitch. Very much old BBQ meets hipper eating (use of variety of materials, there's a bar, exposed beams, etc). Pig is whole hog cooked over wood and was outstanding. Real eastern NC BBQ at its best! Smoky bite, nice texture, moist. Good vinegar on the table, but the pig stands alone. I got a salad and slaw with it. Slaw was also excellent: lightly sweet, delicate slaw without too much mayo. Q and slaw was A+. The negatives: no collards and not much country vegetables. Sides were mostly starch: fries, chips, potato salad etc. Also no hush puppies. Served with pan fried corn bread (which was excellent). Over all, a super solid BBQ joint, with additions on the menu to please a larger crowd (chicken, salads, etc). I've been to Skylight Inn and so I was excited to come here. The food was great and I really liked the many sides they offer along with ribs, turkey, and chicken options. They had some of the same signature sides that Skylight Inn has. The only issue I had was that the pork skin in the chopped BBQ was more chewy than crackling and crunchy. Nonetheless, I still think the Jones have one of the best chopped BBQ I ever had. The pull-pork is very well done, not dry at all. Turkey is OK, but I prefer dark meat and only get white meat. The BBQ chicken is flavorful, and ribs are pretty good as well. Their sauce is the best I've ever had! There are two types: one is sweet and a bit spicy and another one is more sweet. Both of the sauce are super tasty!
