It was "Burger Wednesday", which is the only day Shaw's makes burgers. On this visit, I ordered the Barnyard Burger, which includes a generous portion of pulled pork, a fried egg, and grilled onions on top of the Shaw's created burger patty. It does take a moment for your order to be freshly prepared, but it was certainly worth the wait. It was a delicious and filling meal. read more

I made a stop at Shaw's in Williamston on a Friday for lunch while traveling up to Norfolk, VA. It wasn't too busy but the cashier told me it was Homecoming for the high school that night and it was going to be crazy that night. I'm glad I got in before the craziness. She was very patient as I reviewed the menu. There were LOTS of tasty looking items including tons of amazing desserts. That being said, I just went with a couple hot dogs and fries. I grabbed a booth in the appropriately pig-decorated interior. The food was ready quickly. I wasn't totally sure about the hot dogs when I sat down with them because all I saw was a load of yellow-tinted slaw on top. But, upon further review, this hot dog was just built a bit different. It was assembled thusly: bun, mustard, chili, hot dog, slaw. All in all, very good! This is a cute place in Williamston and I'd definitely return for the BBQ and to actually try some (or all) of their desserts! read more

Tried them again and this time it was much worse. It was about an hour from closing and it tasted like the food had been out all day. I got a chicken family meal and fish. The macaroni was stale (taste, smell, and appearance), they were out of collards and gave me mushy and bland cabbage, chicken was dry... it was all pretty bad. Actually, it was really bad. COVID: All staff members have masks but they are useless when worn under the nose or as a chin strap. Only 1 person wore a mask correctly. There are plexiglass shields in front of the registers but they are also useless when the staff steps around them to talk to you. Service: Very polite but incompetent. Two sandwiches, two sides, and two drinks and the woman couldn't get any of it right, even with multiple repetitions. Food: Shaw's advertises "electrically" cooked and boy, are they right. No trace of smoke flavor whatsoever. Not much flavor at all, for that matter. The collards were equally tasteless. The baked beans were pretty decent, though. Me and my family ordered 3 sausage dogs with cheese, fries, and a grilled cheese. There was barely any cheese on the sausage dogs, the grilled cheese was on a bun and not grilled, and the table was sticky and our sleeves were sticking to the table. When we first ordered, the lady taking our order didn't give us the fries we had ordered, and when she brought us our order, it was somebody else's. The only thing in the restaurant were the decorations. My quest is to eat at every barbecue house I see. I did not order barbecue but shrimp and trout. So this is party on me, I know better. This is eastern NC so the fried dishes are usually fairly safe. Both the trout and shrimp were overcooked. The tartar and cocktail sauce were Kraft. The collards were frozen. Again, I know better. The stewed potatoes were good. None of it worth the 15$ I paid. I really enjoyed this BBQ joint. I grew up less than an hour from Williamston, but I've never stopped there. I tried this place today and had a good time! The place looks and feels like a BBQ joint. It's got an unassuming exterior, simple tables and a very simple menu board that probably has been there for years. Nonetheless, it was clean, comfortable, and had great kitch. The place had every type of customer, young and old, black and white, rich and poor. BBQ as it was intended. The menu is simple, BBQ and/or fried chicken and sides. They have all the sides -- slaw, collards, green beans, boiled potatoes, cabbage, Brunswick stew, even french fries (but don't order those; only little kid and rubes eat fries at a bbq joint). Anyway, I got a BBQ plate with collards and slaw with a tea for $9.82. Plate came with corn sticks. I'm a hush puppy man, but these corn sticks were the real deal. Not those lethal weapon corn sticks you get at Parker's over in Greenville. They were crispy, but delicate. Salty and sweet. Delicious. Might even be better than a hush puppy. The Que was good, but not amazing. That's why I gave it 4 stars. Not much smoke in the que, but it was moist and delicious. Chopped whole hog. On the table was a mostly Eastern BBQ sauce, although there was a dab of ketchup in it (bygones). The que was a little spicier than you usually get in these parts (more red pepper), which I was into. The slaw was delicious. Electric yellow and wonderful. It was just on the edge of my sweetness. Any sweeter and I wouldn't have loved it. Also, it was thankfully free of any sweet pickles. The collards were pedestrian. They weren't soupy, thankfully, but no pork flavor and needed salt, which I've never used at a BBQ joint before. I slathered them with hot sauce and made do. This is average pork BBQ on the way to the OBX, with inconsistent service. We starting grabbing a sandwich here more than 30 years ago, and continued off & on as we traveled thru to the beach, mostly before the improvements to Hwy 64 sent you around the town. We stopped almost completely after we discovered Simp's Barbecue in Roper, but it never reopened after Hurricane Floyd. The BBQ here is tender & moist, but rather bland, and the sauce doesn't seem to remedy that because it has little Eastern NC sauce kick. There is no hint of smokiness. The slaw is of the yellow variety, and I really like it - in fact, it makes the sandwich here cause the pork needs a little help. They serve the pork either finely chopped or coarse (Pig Pickers), really pulled. The Brunswick Stew is something else that I like because it has no sweetness to it, though it is almost all vegetables but no potatoes, and some of those would send the purist through the roof. They serve corn sticks here, and they are true to form, dry and bland. They serve other items, like BBQ Chicken (ok), Chicken Pot Pie (rather nice), and some seafood items. This is a small place where you place your order, get a number, and sit quietly waiting till that number is called. This is definitely not a destination BBQ spot, but if you're in the area, and if you need some pork, it'll work. read more

My husband and I have long been fans of Smithfield BBQ and always order the same thing. So when on our way home from OBX, where we'd OD'd on seafood we found Shaw's and thought we'd made a comparison. We ordered the pulled pork with fried chicken combo with two sides and an extra pulled pork sandwich with slaw. I was a bit concerned at first by the bright yellow of the coleslaw but with the addition of Shaw's vinegar based sauce, the sandwich was a winner. Note: it's really messy so I suggest using a fork! Overall 3.5 stars - Stopped in before 11am on a Wednesday. They were serving breakfast and lunch. My buddy went with a egg & bacon biscuit. It tasted fresh and homemade - really good. The bacon was extra crisp. Highly recommended. We both ordered BBQ sandwiches. Served on a warmed, moist bun. Slaw is optional, but I had them add it. The pork was finely chopped, moist and tasty. But as others have written, it lacked zing and smoky flavor. Sure hope they don't cook with gas! We ate on the go, so can't speak for the sauce, but I looked at a bottle inside, and catsup is an ingredient (which is a step away from true Eastern Carolina sauce recipes - more like piedmont style). The food here was excellent! We will definitely be making regular stops as we travel back and forth between Va and NC. If I had a complaint, it's that the young ladies at the counter need to be a bit more helpful and more personable. As a new customer, we were left to "figure it out" all by ourselves.
