My experience with this company, specifically Andrew, started with an email where I sent over my inventory spreadsheet, followed by a call. Andrew was straightforward, answered all my questions, and I felt absolutely no sales pressure. The shop itself is very professional and welcoming--definitely not like visiting a pawnshop. Andrew was transparent about how they determine evaluations and took the time to explain everything patiently. In the end, I felt I received a fair price for the coins I sold. I had looked into selling on eBay, but after fees and other costs, there really isn't much left for the seller--so this was a much better option. The only minor downside was the parking. The lot is angled, and I had some trouble getting out because an oversized truck was parked nearby. I ended up backing out without issue, but fair warning for anyone who isn't great at parking! I'm recalling exactly what happened at that time. I never received any items back from Sam sloat. Sam Sloat buys stolen items and lies about it they make money and the victim loses. I wish I could have pressed charges against Sam Sloat. My ex friend went back to Sam Sloat 7 different days you think they would have caught on. I've attached 2 out of the 7 receipts to this review. I had let a friend (ex friend now) who had cancer stay with me. He stole appraised jewelry, which included antique jewelry, rare coins, and gold items with HRM engraved on them, that my husband's father had received for doing service from the queen of England. All this stuff was worth thousands and very sentimemetal. After my stuff was stolen I found a Sam Sloat receipt that my ex friend dropped and both me and my husband separately went to Sam Sloat to ask them about the items. They denied ever seeing or purchasing our items. I had pics and appraisals. Police got involved. Detectives went to Sam Sloat obtained videos of the person selling them my jewelry and receipts. My ex friend was found guilty on Felony Larceny charges. read more

One star for general fairness when selling metals or jewelry. Negative 10 million stars for rude and impersonal service. Most of the workers there lack interpersonal skills as if they have been raised by a pack of wolves and have never interacted with another human before. Actually, I think they'd be kinder if raised by wolves. Caveat - the little lady there is relatively ok to deal with. The place has very odd energy overall and grosses me out each and every time. Had to unload a bunch of coins, mostly buffalo head nickles, and silver dimes, quarters and half dollars. This was an EZ process. Christine got back to me quickly via email on the possible value of what I had, essentially based on today's silver value. I went to Sam Sloat on November 5, 2014 to buy American Eagle Silver coins. They have a policy of accepting checks (not credit cards) and then waiting for TWO WEEKS to deliver the silver coins. I nearly gagged, and asked the salesman again. Why? I asked. "That's our policy." How ridiculous is that? If you want to buy a gun, you wait a day or two. If you want to buy SILVER, you have to wait TWO WEEKS? What I think it means is that Sam Sloat doesn't own much inventory and now they have two weeks to go out and shop for silver to deliver to me. I think it is disingenuous to say that "It is our policy." and not explain what is really going on. Here's more info: They sell Silver American Eagles for $18.40 and ounce ($3 over the current market price of silver in the futures markets), or they will buy it from me at $15.40 for a cool 19% markup (if they had a seller and a buyer walk in the store on the same day, they would make a fat 19% return). So, when you decide if you want to buy or sell silver, consider these facts before going to Sam Sloat Coins, Inc in Westport, CT on the Post Road (Next to Mitchell's). As for my rating: I'm happy to say that the salesman was nice, but I didn't like Sam Sloat's policies or business practices. So, I can't say I know there is anything "better" out there, but I can say that I feel "fleeced" after walking in there and learning about the way they do business. So, that means I can't give a 2-stars rating. And 1-star seems rude for me to say, since the description says "EEK, ME THINKS NOT". Called Sam Sloat Coins at around 10am and asked for their pricing on gold bullion coins, which I was looking to buy. The woman I spoke to gave me prices for 1-9 coins, and 10+ coins, which were a bit high, but not unreasonable. I wasn't expecting them to beat the prices that the major online sellers offer. So, around 11:30 I got to their shop and asked to buy one coin. The man I spoke to quoted a price that was $15 higher than I had been told on the phone. When I said this, he said the lower price only applied if I bought 2 coins. I told him I had been told on the phone that the price applied to quantities of 1-9, but he just shrugged. On principle I left without buying anything. It's one thing to charge too much, but it's another to pull a bait and switch by quoting one price on the phone and then refusing to honor it in store.
