My gal didn't know it, but I was having trouble finding a hard cover of the first book of the "Game of Thrones" series. I figured if anyone had it, Beastly would. We arrived direct from driving up from Albuquerque. We found the place easily enough, and walked in to a wonderful smell of coffee. The fella at teh register also made all kinds of concoctions. We had to get a cup after that, and it was excellent coffee. It's a brightly lit spot which was great. Along with the coffee aroma it also had some pine like smells I imagine from the woodwork of the shelves. That or the side room they had a spot they were doing some construction on what looked like an expansion. And of course they had plenty of hardcovers, so with a bit of subterfuge my daughter got the book so we could give it to my wife. It worked out great. Next time back we will have to check out his bar next door, as it was closed at the hour we were in town.

About two years ago I realized that there was a friendlier non-corporate alternative to getting…read morecoffee, snacks, and even made-to-order affordable breakfast and lunch food downtown. The Go Cart is the place. In warmer weather, this business alcove is transformed into a pretty cool little hangout where you can read your paper, get refressing tea and coffee, and shoot the gab with the owner and some of the seasonal helpers. Mayor Coss gets his coffee there every day. If you bring your own cup for iced drinks, you get a way better discount than any other coffee place in the entire city and they make a great breakfast burrito. But the REAL SECRET about this place is that they actually have coffee ice cubes in their freezer for their iced coffee. Nobody else in town does this, so essentially everybody else in town is serving you watered down iced coffee! I love this place.

According to Jim, the owner for the last several decades, this store is the biggest collection of Spanish-language materials in the United States (with something like 80,000 volumes!). Jim is very knowledgable and friendly, and we talked for over an hour. I came away with a handful of vintage art postcards and some exciting reading recommendations!
