I have been to Plato's Closet multiple times and every time I've been there I found something that I love and wear on a regular basis. I absolutely love the lower prices and the large selection range. It's geared towards a younger crowd but I have seen people of all ages there. Unbeknownst to me was that the jacket was missing the main zipper. Yes... the jacket had absolutely NO zipper with which to close out the cold. We discovered this only after I returned home & my 14yo son tried it on. I tried to return asking just for store credit. The store rep - Abby informed me they would not take back the jacket as it was marked "clearance". And that because their buyer "made a mistake" they marked it clearance (30% off original price). When I emphasized that I only wanted store credit and that I would gladly choose something else for my son. I suggested that if they were passing a "mistake" onto a customer, that they should do so with transparency and clearly mark the tag with a note indicating the items flaw, e.g. write "missing main zipper" on tag. Otherwise, I suggested, the omission smacks of deceit and is unethical. She seemed unconcerned. Abby & other employees said with a laugh, "we don't even know how to do that". Meaning they don't know how to do a store exchange. I couldn't help but notice an air of smugness when she said this. Abby was quite bodacious and loud as she exclaimed a refusal in front numerous customers. I felt humiliated and defeated. So they refused to accept the jacket back. Adding insult to injury, Abby offered to take the jacket and donate it! I am a seasoned shopper and loyal customer of Platos. We've purchased clothing for all 3 of my now teen kids for the past several years over the course of numerous growth spurts including a current growth spurt my 14 yo is now experiencing! I don't appreciate the disrespect nor the blatant disregard on full display for other customers to witness and perhaps intended as showcase. I'll simply have to take my business elsewhere. I always have good luck here in finding items that I'm looking for. I found items for my sin which were a great pair of Black converse shoes, a watch and a few shirts. My favorite find was a few cute purses(one with tags) and a floral dress. This dress will be used as a layering item for jeans, leggings and with tights and boots. read more

I cannot go to another store after shopping here, I'm just not willing to pay full price. They have tons of current styles and a lot of new with tags items. I love their purse and jewelry selection, I always seem to walk out with a pair of earrings. I wouldn't say this is the place for you if you want to buy professional clothing or anything you'd find in the women's/men's section of kohls or nordstrom. But you can definitely get lots of stuff from places to like Forever 21 and Shein (my favorite). I've sold here a few times and they are quite particular about what they take. But they will take the time to lay out and explain why they passed on stuff if you ask them. In general I find that if I like a lot of the items here, they usually like my own items and buy a lot. The customer service is unparalleled. Truly. They greet everyone who comes in, they are so friendly at check out, and they'll do anything to help you have a good experience. I just visited this location for the first time this week to get rid of a bunch of my old clothes and to get some new items for my fall wardrobe. It was a great experience all around! I ended up staying longer than I even expected because there were so many good items to browse through and the staff was very kind and friendly. The customer service at this Plato's is definitely better than other locations I've been to. The employees here are a lot nicer than the rude ones I have encountered at other stores. Sold some clothes here the other week and they were very fair. Don't come in expecting to get top dollar for your clothes because that's not how their business model works, but it's really fast and better than letting your clothes sit unworn or throwing them away. You may not always be able to find something amazing, but you can find some good clothes for a good price at times. Good place to hunt for a bargain. read more

Unless you have some really recent Forever 21, you might have a hard time selling/trading stuff in here. It's mostly for teens and people in their young 20s, it seems. So why (as someone no longer in my early 20s,) do I still think this place is A-OK? Jeans. Racks and racks of jeans -- from high-end to Old Navy. It's always hard to find jeans that fit quite right, but the variety of brands and sizes means that I'm almost guaranteed to find at least one pair that fits -- this last time I walked out with 2 pairs for under $40 total. Where else can you do that? Both pairs were almost new, too. Plus, there's the occasional chance to score a nice item or two from H&M or Urban, if you're lucky. It's not quite vintage, and it's a little young for me, but somehow I almost always find something that fits and is a super good deal, so I keep checking back now and again. read more

Love consignment stores, and this one, upon my first visit, looks pretty awesome. They bought a couple of my clothes, gave me about $6 cash, and then I turned around and bought a pair of shorts. If you check in on facebook, they offer a 10% discount (there's a little sign somewhere in the store that says this) Looks very well organized, and I'll definitely come in again. I walked into this place in the beginning stages of peak crisis mode -- almost as if the coffee I drank earlier that morning was my pregame for the anxiety attack I'd have later that day. I received last minute VIP tickets to a Havana Nights fundraiser for charity and proper attire was [bold italic] strongly suggested [end bold italic]. My wardrobe consists of jeans, politically motivated t-shirts, and a pair of flip-flops I scored at Old Navy for $10 like 3 years ago. I don't remember the guys name who helped me, but bless his stylish little heart. He walked straight to the pant rack, then the shirt rack, over to the little thing they hang belts on, and then proceeded to escort me to a dressing room. I walked out of there in less than 20 minutes with [proper attire] spending $15. I've spent more on churros at the local Cuban eatery than I did on this outfit that was dripping in swag. Havana Nights didn't know what hit them when I entered the room. I looked like the equivalent of Eddie Cibrian and Eva Mendes birthing a badass, philanthropic, Cuban love child. This store is the Mr. Worldwide of retailers (like back when Pitbull was kind of new and still fun to hear on the aux). I give it cinco stars. read more

Sold some items and got a fair price. Staff were very polite and thorough. I will say, I did come in 2017 to sell items and the staff was rude and offered basically nothing, so I left. The management change that another reviewer posted about seems very legit. Give them a try in 2018 as it seems to have made a change for the best. read more

I came here in the past and found the service to be unfriendly and was only offered $10 for a wide selection of my clothes which I found somewhat fishy. The other day I decided to give them another chance. I came here to sell some of my unworn clothes. It was hard parting with them, as most of them are very good quality and were expensive... I just never wore them. The girl who helped me was so incredibly sweet and personable. I instantly felt like I could trust her and like she was genuinely interested in sorting through my clothes and assessing them. I made a good amount of money off of them as opposed to the last time when I felt slightly cheated. The lack of five stars is because I'm not a fan of their selection personally, there just isn't much in there that is my style. However, four stars for wonderful customer service! Whoever that girl was (tall with shoulder length brown hair) is so sweet and helpful! read more

This place is rough. We were thinking it might be something like Crossroads or Buffalo Exchange. It serves only teens. For girls, it has everything you might need to look like something out of Mean Girls. Imagine lots of pink sequins, shirts saying "Live, Love, Laugh" and leggings paired with Uggz. The "Men's section" is even more bleak; imagine lots and lots of stained Hollister and GAP clothing, bright colored things, baggy Nike shorts, and 90's hightops. It's bad. I imagine it is perfectly fine for 10-14 year olds, but adults are going to have a hard time finding anything becoming of an adult. read more

I love recycled clothes. I love recycling! Both buying and selling things be it from jewelry to clothes, bags and beyond! I used to work in vintage clothing and have done my fair share of buying and selling, so I have a sense of what not to bring in and what I can expect from savvy pickers.Your stained clothes, the broken shoes, and musty old shirts are definitely not gonna fly in a resale place that's geared towards young, thrifty minded shoppers like the ones that frequent here. Some of my dressier pieces were ignored, while cheap items scooped up. (Think Forever 21; I believe that's their trend-o-meter.) This isn't so much a consignment and vintage place as it is a resale shop for throwaway fashions. As many of the reviewers here have already noted, it's kind of confusing the things that are taken in. A lot of Target brands, Forever 21, some H & M, the occasional Joe's jean if you're a size 2. A lot of the dresses on the rack go towards $12, shirts $5, and some shoes between $15-25, which I think is a little bit on the pricy side. They offer you about 30 percent of what your clothes will resale for and I believe a better deal if you want store credit. All in all, this place is alright. read more

Plato's closet is my favorite place to shop for clothes. The prices are low enough that I don't have buyer's remorse, and the store is picky enough that I don't have to look at 30 pairs of "mom jeans" from 1994 before I find a cute pair. Mariah is right that it's hard to sell your clothes here--they only take in-season, new-looking, brand name items. And even if they take your clothes, they give you maybe 30% of what they will sell it for, so you won't earn much. read more

Stay away from any reviews posted 2017 or earlier. This location was operating under old management; thus, the countless bad experiences/reviews. If you're a local and you're willing to give these folks a second chance, you will not be disappointed. I have shopped this store since moving to Michigan in 2016, so I can say confidently, those negative reviews aren't all wrong. They're just not up to date. The current Plato's staff is different. They offer a genuine greeting when you walk in the door, exceptional customer service and support during peak hours, and an uncanny friendliness at check out. If Yelp's a place to bash local businesses, then maybe I'm taking the wrong approach here. But I think Yelp, and Plato's, want us to celebrate what's 'right' with the retail industry. If you agree, get off your high horse and give these Plato's a second chance at getting it right. read more

I work nearby, so I come in here often. I always find things I like. The girls who work here are really friendly and always check to see if you're doing ok. I even left my phone in the parking lot, and they were kind enough to keep it in their store for me. I found a lot of great things but my favorite would be a brand new Vera Wang ankle length skinny jeans for $13! I wear it all time, and since I'm 4'11, the jeans are the perfect length for me. They have a lot of good stuff in here that I would have gotten if they were only my size! I even saw several pairs of Jeffery Campbell shoes! They were priced like a third of the price they would normally cost. If you're in the area, it's definitely a place worth checking out. read more

this is one of my absolute favorite plato's closet locations; not only does this store get a lot of great product from being so close to the Briarwood mall, it also gets a lot of traffic from UofM students selling their trendy clothes here, so I always find something cute that fits my style. the employees are friendly & helpful, their is a menswear section in the back, and they have sizes up to 6x, which is great to see. the store recently got a remodel so it's WAY BIGGER than before! fitting rooms & restroom are open to the public. if you're coming from the highway, you'll have to take a "michigan left" to get into the strip mall where this store located, but even at peak traffic hours, it isn't super hard to do. overall, highly recommend shopping or selling clothes here. read more

Went to trade in today and the sales associate was super rude and gave me no information on the process. They called me back and said they wouldn't take anything because they are only accepting summer and no high heels. My stuff was good quality seems silly to pass up but either way the 1st person I spoke to could have told me what they are accepting. Instead I had to make two trips. Went today spent $60 got 3 pairs of fashionable high end jeans and two shirts, one with the tag on it for $30! Can't beat that. I'm writing this review to address a few things that I have read on multiple platos closet reviews in the area. I used to work at a consignment shop and platos was our competition. The place is deff better than what our store was quality wise. #1 used clothes shopping is not for everyone. Some reviews talk about the "smell"... Everyone has there own unique smell. Your house your clothes your furniture, everything smells like you... Now take everybody's smells and put them together and you get the unique used store smell. It's not a horrible smell.. You might not even notice it but apparently some people don't like it... Whatever. Used shopping is obviously not for them. #2. You are NOT going to get what you think you will for your clothes. As soon as you walk out of the regular store with something it's value drops 50%... Wear it and its value drops another 25%... And continues to drop every season afterwards... Your lucky if you will get 10% of what you bought something for... Taking your clothes to a resale shop is not a way to make a living. It's an alternative to giving away your unwanted things for free or going through the hassle of selling it yourself. #3 you may have to wait. We would take consignment for 4 hours a day and would see sometimes over 100 people come in with bags of clothes... It gets tiring looking at all those clothes so yes you might get some unintentional attitude from the worn out workers( read a few reviews on other pages about customer service). This is a minimum wage job people and you may be nice (thank you for that) but you have no idea who has been in before you and flipped out on the workers because they weren't offered the amount they thought they would or all of their clothes weren't taken. A store only has so much room and has to remain shop able. If they don't take your clothes just take it in stride. They are trying to be as objective as possible in a subjective category of style. Everyone's style is different and its hard to be objective without just taking what you would wear. It's not an easy job especially once you have had a customer flip out on you. #4 you might think they are making a ton of money off you but they are not. Lets say they give you $8 for some jeans and sell them for $16.. You have no idea and neither do they about how long the jeans will take to sell... Their is a cost to pay workers for every hour they work, the cost of electricity to run the store, the monthly rent of the stores location, the supplies needed for all aspects of the store ect... Many consignment and resale shops go out of sale because there is not a lot of profit to be made... Your contribution to the store is keeping it afloat. Overall these stores can be great for buyers and sellers, you just have to go into it with the right mind set! Hope this review will help! read more

employees are ok. haven't had a good or bad experience with them. My issue with this store is they consistently take old ratty stained clothes simply because they are "in style." If you shop here, plan on searching every single item for a stain or flaw because i promise you will find one. Bought a pair of jeans recently and the back is COVERED in stains. I guess that's my fault for expecting a nice used clothing store to check for stains first, but i guess they don't. I've also gotten a few shirts with minor stains but I still expected them to be in better condition. I understand they have a strict return policy but they should make exceptions if they're going to sell clothes like that. I've been to several other locations and have NEVER had a problem with ratty stained clothes. If they're going to sell disgusting clothes like that they should be priced down way more. Extremely disappointed and will be avoiding this store from now on in order to prevent more wasted money on old gross clothes. read more

They tell you they won't purchase something you've brought in due to normal wear and tear, but you browse through the merchandise and find a lot of the clothing being sold is in far worse condition. I brought in two thirty-gallon trash bags full of "barely worn" clothing, and all they could offer me was $7.70 on TWO items, and claimed they couldn't buy anything else due to said "wear and tear." read more

This place will always be a mystery to me. Granted, at 26 I am no longer in their "target age range"- but even as a teenager I was confused by the place. They claim to be a "high end" thrift store with "nearly new brand name clothing"- but EVERY TIME I go there, I find sweater will tons of pilling, stains on blouses and worn cuffed jeans. That's not to say they don't have some nice stuff- they do- but I honestly have had WAY more luck (at half the price) at the Ann Arbor Salvation Army Thrift Store. And if you plan on selling- don't plan on unloading very much or making very much. Which is the main reason I've never quite understood this place. For example, yesterday I brought in a huge load of nice-ish branded clothing (GAP, JCrew, H&M, Forever 21, etc). After waiting 30 minutes (inside the store- you can't leave) I was told they would buy TWO things (which was way better than the 0 things they took from the 5 people ahead of me). The things they took? A 3 year old tshirt from GAP outlet that cost me $2 and a 2 year old tank top from H&M that I was embarrassed I ever bought. So much for only buying recent, quality stuff? I got $4.55 which I was actually pretty happy about considering the low quality stuff they bought. However, it really made me wonder about all the good stuff they turn down! I should have tracked down those 5 people ahead of me and offered to have a clothing swap! Bottom Line: Go to Salvation Army instead. It is WAY bigger, has WAY cheaper prices, and doesn't come with the bad attitude Plato's Closet employees generally offer for free. read more

I'm outside of the demographic, but I have sold a few things here... admittedly some things I never should have bought in the first place. I don't purchase here, though, mainly because the sales staff are incredibly stuck up. I'm too old to have a 17 year old turn her nose up at me as she tells her friend which boys she made out with at so-and-so's party last weekend. So this place has only been the last stop before I drop off my never-should-have-bought-this fashions at the Salvation Army. I agree with others who remarked that this place buys a somewhat odd selection from what I bring. The items of mine they reject are never in bad condition, so judging by my experience go to Salvation Army for the best quality stuff. read more

Many of the clothes here are not very clean and seem to have shed hairs all over. I went in yesterday with a load of hollister,abercrombie and forever 21 products. They denied everything the staff were very shady and they forgot to take the sensor off the hoodie I bought. Its not like I live down the street from the place I live thirty minutes away. The clothes that were for sale were no match for the clothes that I was selling. They had stains and looked dingy. So I really don't know about this place. I do love the other platos closets around them. I don't experience a lot of good in Ann Arbor anyways :/ read more

Great resource for the young and the young at heart. Very carefully selected used clothes- leaning more to the Abercrombe & Fitch style than the Banana Republic. The prices are higher than Salvation Army, but not a lot, and they've done an awful lot of weeding out for you. Jeans from 6 to $16, shoes from 14 to $20, tops 10 to $14. Good prices for what they have. Worth a look for sure. read more

One of the better Plato's, probably because it's in a college area. As a buyer this place has supplied me with many different styles I was never willing to spent the money on before (peplum tops, sweaters with spikes in them). As a seller, Plato's is a pickier resale store. If the clothes aren't lightly used & in-style, you won't have much luck. read more

Small store but has a good selection of clothes. I went in looking for some jeans and they had several my size and one that did the trick. Yes they are a bit expensive for second hand but the clothes are in excellent conditions...close to new. My wife was looking at the purses and they had a good selection of those too. I've been to this place numerous times now. I believe that the prices are very reasonable and the staff is very friendly. I know a lot of the negative reviews on here have to deal with the trade ins (while I understand where your coming from), take a look around the store. It's packed. Every time I shop here, I have a tough time looking through the racks because they are all jammed with very nice clothes. They can't buy everything you have because they already have enough. I really like getting things I need here because I can stick to brands I love and great quality for cheap. read more

The selection of clothing is decent. But, frankly, as Other reviews have mentioned their employees are a bit rude. I was made to wait over an hour and a half (I was quoted 35 min) for a bag of clothes with less than 10 items in it to be appraised. When I approached them to ask whether it was ready they told me it was already done being reviewed and they didn't purchase anything. I never received a call from them. And when I looked at the bag I noticed It hadn't really been moved from the spot on the floor where it was sitting when I left it so I highly doubt they even looked inside the bag. Mistakes happen. I wouldn't ding a business for that. What bothers me is that there were 4 employees who were behind the counter and only one of them apologized. And not even right away. It took my suggestion that I really wished I hadn't had to wait so long before she even said anything. And even then she barely stopped to say 'I'm sorry' there was no overt admission that they had made a mistake or wasted my time. I won't be back. read more

If I could give them no stars I would. Brought a bin in during winter and they sent me away with a bag of clothes that they told me to bring back in the Spring and they would buy them. Took them back in and they didn't take a single item from the bag. It all depends on the style choice of the person doing the buyout and there is no standard across the store. It was a waste of time and gas. I see the worn out sometimes stained items they have on their racks but they pass on name brand clean items - ???? Definitely don't waste your time here. They have so many clothes that aren't in fashion, then complain when I bring something that is "in style" because they have "too much of it". Brought in two large laundry baskets full of clothes and they barely took it apart. Super rude and sounded like robots with the stuff they're supposed to say to customers.
