This might be my favorite Mexican restaurant in Omaha at the moment. I've been in a couple of times now and I look forward to going back to try more. I have to be honest, I've only had tacos. I always start with tacos anywhere I go to see if they do those well. My general thought is that if they can't do tacos well, they probably aren't doing other things well. Unreliable and unscientific, to be sure, but it's my process. I can safely report that El Alteño does tacos right. The chorizo tacos were excellent, as were the chicken tacos. Seasoned to perfection and the chicken is so juicy and tender. The tacos come with onions and cilantro. And if you like your tacos with a dollop of guacamole, you won't get it here. But don't worry, they bring you an avocado salsa that will knock your socks off. All their salsas are solid. The service is good and it's been pretty efficient in my visits. They have an extensive menu that I hope to start exploring next time. Then again, the tacos are so good, why get anything else? read more

Incredible birria here! I heard they had amazing birria so this had to be my next spot to try. I came for a pick up order on cinco de mayo, I ordered birria tacos and my husband got 3 street tacos (carne asada, cachete-cheek, and chicken). The ordering process was super simple from instagram! Their ordering page is linked to their IG page. A few clicks and I was set! They had the order ready in less than 15 minutes and the text alert system was great. I walked in and they had the order ready to go. It seemed like a smooth system, efficient and accurate. There were a ton of to go orders ready and the woman working was on the phone and still helped me. Super great service! Good price too, $25 for 3 birria and 3 street tacos seems like value in this economy! Flavor wise, some of the best birria I've tried! The consommé was savory, had tons of onion and cilantro, and came with a side of radish and lime. The meat was rich and moist without much fat, and the cheese was melty and there was plenty of it! We'll be back for sure. They don't have alcoholic drinks but there's plenty of aguas frescas and horchata. The desserts looked really good and I wish I would've picked up some fresas con crema or choco flan. read more

Lunch at Alteño. It's a little off L street and behind Advance Auto Parts. Plenty of parking. We sat ourselves and chips and salsa were quickly delivered. The waitress soon arrived for our order. I had a strawberry aqua fresa, which wasn't overly sweet, and 3 quesabirrias with rice and beans. Beans and rice were well seasoned. Quesabirrias were good and the accompanying consommé wasn't salty. Radishes were provided. Service was quick and pleasant. Restaurant was spacious and clean. Worth a return visit. read more

Another Door Dash order out here in Omaha, NE. Was easily influenced by a Tik Tok. I opted for the combo #1 and it came with rice, beans, salad, 2 red chicken enchiladas, and a chicken flauta. I was sad we didn't get chips and salsa. Apparently it's free if you eat in restaurant, I honestly think it should apply for delivery as well. The food was actually good for being in Omaha. It didn't look like the fancy Cali Mex we get back home, but it was tasty. The beans were nicely seasoned, as was the rice. The enchiladas could use some sour cream but that's okay. I've had this twice now and I think it's my new favorite place. I've gotten the quesabirria tacos and the flautas, and the chips and salsa. The salsa is the ONLY thing here I haven't loved. It's a bit more vinegar/tomato forward than I like. I'm more of an onion/cilantro flavor girl. The flautas are always so crispy and the chicken is tender and lean. The green salsa is the bomb and I drench my flautas in it. The rice and beans are also solid, which I've actually found to be hard to find in town. Everything is always packaged well and I've only had delivery so far so I need to stop in in person! read more

My favorite tacos in town! They're simple in the best way: fresh tortillas, steak, cilantro, and onions. Nothing else needed and they nail it. I love their tamales, rice, and beans as well. They have crisp chips and salsa brought to the table when you sit. They also have a great avocado sauce, which goes perfect on anything. Servers are nice, and you pay at the front desk. read more

Browsing on MLK day, my girlfriend and I checked out this establishment. Very clean, plainly decor in South Omaha that I was very impressed. Once seated our server brought our chips and salsa which has a nice bit of heat. I chose the Quesabirria which were incredible while she opted for Huevos A La Mexicana. She was quite surprised that a breakfast menu too was offered. Both entrees as stated were quite enjoyable. I would highly suggest adding them to your dining experience. read more

El Alteño is my favorite Mexican restaurant I have found in Omaha. It has become a go to for my husband and I. I always will recommend El Alteño because everything I have ever had is SO good!!! The barbacoa and adobada tacos are my favorite. The chilaquiles verdes and the quesabirria tacos are also incredible! As well as their guacamole and homemade chips. Their food has so much flavor and they have so many options to choose from! We came for my dad's birthday with family and they made sure to give him flan and play happy birthday on their speakers in Spanish. It was really sweet and was a great time! There is a lot of seating inside and you pay at the counter by where you walk in. I absolutely love El Alteño and cannot get enough of it!!! I highly recommend!! read more

The service was amazing at this place! It comes with free chips and salsa - which is always such a nice thing to do. Mix it with the queso and it's fire! My wife and I visited this store on the information received from Yelp. We had previously attended El Patron on Vinton Street and Yelp has a note that suggested this cafe might be a good follow up. Bingo..!! One of the most authentic Mexican eating houses just outside of the Barrio. Clean facility with large seating area. Food was outstanding. I had Chilli Rellenos and my wise had chimichangas. Both were superb . We plan to take my daughter and her husband there to eat. He fancies himself as a Mexican food connoisseur. I know he won't be disappointed. BTW the owner waited on us so we received extra special attention. The corn tortillas here are fantastic. I also had a chicken tamal. I would request red sauce over mine the next time I order one. Great place to have some great food. When we got to the Taqueria it was empty then just felt like a flip of a switch then the place got packed, which is always a good sign. Food being brought out looked well made and portions were good. I ordered the Beef Soup and my wife had the shrimp enchiladas. The servers brought out 5 different salsas which was awesome all ranging from not to hot all the way to spicy. My soup had oxtails, short rib and cubed chunks chuck roast as you can see in the picture there was more meat than anything else. That said I have to say this was best tasting beef soup I've had at a restaurant. Definitely going to put this gem on our Omaha best eats map. My wife's enchiladas were also in point. Tables next to use had birra tacos and with thier first bite they had thier facial expression would say it all. Alteño has been our go to Mexican spot. The tacos have so much flavor and the tortillas they use taste like true authentic homemade corn tortillas. The green salsa is my favorite but be cautious for the red it's super spicy! Fajitas are typically topped with cheese but we opted out. The portion was HUGE so I took the rest for lunch the next day. I highly encourage you to support this small business. Owners are typically working in the back or the counter and all of their staff has been great to us when we visit! read more

My whole table got various tacos so I cant speak on any other dish but probably some of the best authentic tacos ive had in Omaha. The sauces they provide on the side are also awesome. These reviews have to be fake. Disappointing Experience - Would Not Recommend. I was initially excited to try this restaurant after seeing a glowing video review on social media. Unfortunately, my experience was far from what I expected. Upon being seated, I immediately noticed how unclean the space was. There appeared to be dried food or some kind of dark liquid splattered on the wall near our table--clearly something that had been neglected for some time. The napkin dispenser was also crusted with dried cilantro and dust, which was quite off-putting. Trying to look past the cleanliness issues, I went ahead and ordered a combination plate that included a green chicken enchilada, a sope, and a chile relleno. Sadly, none of the items were enjoyable. Everything tasted like it had been cooked in old fryer oil that wasn't hot enough, resulting in greasy, unappetizing food. I felt nauseated for hours afterward. On a more positive note, the chips and salsa were decent, and the three accompanying sauces had a strong garlic flavor--though that may not be to everyone's taste. The restaurant occupies the former BW3's space and has retained the same layout, with little to no renovation or refresh. Another downside: they don't serve alcohol, so a margarita to offset the meal wasn't an option. To top it off, I was nearly overcharged at checkout. When I pointed out the discrepancy between the menu price and what I was being charged, the staff simply shrugged. It left a very strange impression. With so many excellent Mexican restaurants in the area, I would recommend looking elsewhere. This place, unfortunately, did not live up to the hype. read more

Waited 30 minutes after we ordered for the server to come back and tell us they had no steak for the fajitas we ordered. 5-10 minutes would be understandable, but 30 minutes.
