As always the service was great!!! The down home country setting is my favorite part. The only complaint I had was the Cole slaw was a little on the slimy side. I could tell it was premixed slaw, like the kind I've seen in hospitals or nursing homes. No sugar or salt added, and I couldn't added enough salt and pepper to make it taste good. Drove up from Jasper for a day trip adventure. Got there around noon on a Friday and the place was so packed I didn't know if we would be able to get a seat. The pulled pork was delicious as were the corn nuggets and beef brisket. If you're in the area, it's worth a trip. read more

Awesome barbecue great place great workers fresh and tasty I had the beef brisket plate with coleslaw and potato salad, my wife had pull pork sandwich lg and Mac and cheese and coleslaw also got a second plate Ribs!!! Visited Sam's Smokehouse for lunch while in Fayette for work. I'm a snob over barbeque and have a strong preference for Memphis style, so let that be your explanation for my less than stellar impression. Sam's is a no-frills kind of joint. You come in and place your order at the counter; they vary between calling out orders or numbers (I was never given a number, which was confusing) and you pick your food up at the counter. The tables, if you choose to dine in, are covered in advertisements for other businesses. I like dives, but I thought that was a little tacky. Clean enough, though. The service was terse and unfriendly. Granted, they were pretty busy and the ladies seemed a little overwhelmed...but it didn't make the best impression. I got the pork plate with fries and something called cheese tots. Like many Alabama bbq joints, two pieces of white bread came with my meal. Frankly, I don't get that tradition and left them alone, so I can't speak to taste or freshness of the bread. The pork was...bleh. The texture was okay, pretty finely chopped, and it was a very large serving for the money. Unfortunately, it didn't have a ton of smoke flavor, and was reduced to that sort of bland, faintly gamey flavor a lot of mediocre pulled pork gets. The sauce is mustard based. Not my favorite, but I didn't hate it - I generally prefer it over vinegar based sauces, and I liked it better than - gasp - Dreamland's mustard sauce. As far as mustard based sauces go, this one was alright. Sadly, it didn't do enough to save the pork for me. The cheese tots were...interesting. They're a play on tater tots, but they're shaped more like little hash brown rounds. Chunked potatoes with a squirt of cheddar cheese, fried up to eat. I still don't know how I feel about them. On the one hand, fried potatoes are ALWAYS good. On the other, the potatoes pieces were still almost a little watery, and the cheddar cheese had the taste of cheez-whiz, which is a big no for me. A lot came in the order, but I could only stomach 2 or 3. The fries were crinkle cut, not super hot, and probably out of a freezer bag. They weren't bad, though - honestly, I probably liked them the best out of what I had. My dining companion got the smoked wings with green beans. The beans DESPERATELY needed salt, but she loved the wings. I will say they looked tasty! The ranch they served it with was really good. I got to dip my fries in the extra cup she didn't use, which made me happy. I...may have also tried some pork in it. Don't judge me - the ranch covered the bleh flavor of the meat nicely! Lol. I absolutely LOVE Sam's smokehouse. Every single time I take my pups to the Fayette Vet Clinic for checkups, I always smell an amazing aroma of smokehouse meats from the smoker in the back and it makes my mouth (and my pups mouths) water. The chicken wings are excellent! The vinegar based BBQ sauce is a very Carolina inspired sauce and goes great with everything. My fiancé and I personally love the deep fried cheese balls...one of the best things on their menu! You won't be disappointed with this place. Best BBQ in the county! read more

The people of Fayette have spoken and Sam's is the favorite BBQ spot in town at least according to the few locals I asked. Several of the aforementioned locals specifically praised the wings and potato salad. Based on a few glowing recommendations a friend and I have them a shot. We each had the smoked wing plate and we each had the potato salad. For $9.00 you get 8 jumbo smoked wings and two sides. The wings had great flavor. My only recommendation would be to maybe offer a sauce vs packet Texas Pete and the 2 house Bbq sauces. They are famous for smoked chicken so a white sauce would have been nice. Fortunately, I really like Texas Pete and it was a nice accent to the smokey flavor coupled with the house made ranch for dipping. Ribs, wings and smoked chicken are among what appeared to be the most popular items. Sides are basic BBQ joint options with good potato salad (no sweet pickle relish in the loaded potato salad). I went against my norm and didn't order the onion rings. That was my mistake, which I won't make again when, not if, I go back. I saw them on a few other people's plates and they appeared to be hand battered real deal! The house sauce is a mustard/ vinegar base with a sweet finish. They had a second sauce with a traditionally deep red hue that was smokey and sweet. I personally do not care for sweet BBQ sauce. My buddy really liked the gold colored vinegar / mustard based sauce. The people were friendly and the parking lot was full around 11:45. The interior was clean and well maintained. We actually got the last available table at the time, which didn't deter people from ordering and cozying up to smaller parties not occupying their entire space. Shining example good small town mom and pop BBQ operation. They finished 2nd overall in AL.com poll of Tuscaloosa readers for best ribs in 2014. I will be back and if for whatever reason you find yourself in Fayette, Alabama I would absolutely recommend giving this little place a shot! read more

Yum! We were passing through Fayette, AL on our way to a wedding and my fiancé announced that he doesn't like barbecue. I'm acknowledging that he's crazy and I am crazy for marrying him but I told him we needed some Alabama barbecue anyways and he could order chicken fingers. We stopped at Sam's and ordered a rib plate and a barbecue sandwich. The man ate all of his ribs in about two minutes and then started eyeing my sandwich. Sam's has converted my Yankee future husband! Great food, large portions. A great pitstop for us. I doubt we'll ever be back to Fayette but we sure did have a nice meal while we were there. read more

We enjoyed pulled pork plates, baked beans, fries and onion rings. Everything was delicious, cooked to perfection!! Lots of food at a reasonable price. The BBQ sauce is mustard based. My first experience with this type of sauce and loved it! We were in Fayette on business and stumbled by this BBQ joint. I refer to it as a joint in a very complimentary way. Reminded us of the BBQ joints of our childhood!!! The fellow customers were a lot friendlier than the staff, but that's ok. The yummy food made up for the lack of friendliness of the staff, and we were not looking for new friends. Will return to Sams Smokehouse ASAP! read more

Excellent ribs and even better smoked wings--some of the best I've ever tasted. The meat falls right off the bone. Also, don't miss the rich, creamy potato salad with bits of smoked chicken in it. The dining area is about as no-frills as it gets, and they sometimes run out of their most popular items at peak hours. It's definitely worth a trip, but you might want to call to make sure they've still got some left. read more
