The San Antonio River Walk was one of the highlights of my visit. My favorite place in San Antonio. I may be a local, but I can't ever seem to get enough of the River Walk. It's easy to walk, the tour boats are novel, rental bikes are everywhere, there are tons of places to eat and shop, and you can even carry open containers of alcohol along the River level. Art museums, hotels, the courthouse, and more can be accessed from the River, so it's easily a huge part of the heart of downtown. The city keeps doing more and more to make the space memorable, so permanent art installations, parks, and other similar features keep getting added as time goes on. If you're visiting from out of town, I can't recommend adding the River Walk to your trip enough. It's absolutely worth experiencing for yourself. read more

With almost a thousand reviews, the San Antonio Riverwalk maintains a rating of over four stars and that's pretty amazing. In my opinion, it definitely deserves it. We visited the Riverwalk and surrounding area multiple times on our visit to San Antonio and it was probably the most enjoyable thing that we did while we were there. Just in my few visits, I had lots of different experiences. The Riverwalk can be calm and beautiful or it can be fun and lively and sometimes it can be all of those things just depending on where you are within the walk. Also depending on when you choose to go, as I noticed a distinctly different vibe between my daytime and nighttime visits. As soon as you drop down from the street level into the walk, it's like you're in a whole new place. The water winds through the walk so you always have a lovely view and the calming sound of water with you wherever you venture on the walk. There are tons of shops and restaurants and shaded little spots where you can just sit on a bench and enjoy the ambiance. It's clean, well maintained and surprisingly easy to navigate, especially with all the people moving through it at any particular time. Even though some spots felt crowded, I was still always able to maneuver around without feeling claustrophobic. I think it's the openness of the walk and the fact that the river running right next to you create this open space above. Anyway, I had some really nice meals here and enjoyed some good shopping, but mostly just walking and chatting with the people that I care about while enjoying the beauty of my surroundings. The San Antonio River Walk is a must see attraction when visiting. This walkway around the San Antonio River will take you to many shops and restaurants. I'm wondering why I've never reviewed the River Walk. I've been here several times over the years and though it's considered touristy, I still rather enjoy it. It's a sentimental location for me and I have fond memories of making the visit with my dad in my early 30s. Shops and restaurants line the tranquil water making for pleasant strolls year-round. Obviously not a business but a walk along the river the supports dozens of businesses. My husband and I must have passed at least five steakhouses. It was weirdly interesting and convenient to pass by a random CVS since I needed a phone charger. The sights are gorgeous, and the temperature on the river level was perfect, enhanced by a cool breeze. Restaurants, stores, and street vendors line the entire walk. Everything is Texas themed (makes sense since we're in the heart of San Antonio and one of the most famous river walks in the US). There is a lot of foot traffic, and you have to find paid parking either in a garage or down the street in one of the public lots. Be mindful that there are no barriers between you and the water. So if you're taking that selfie, try not to step too far back. I watched a mom snatch her little girl away from the edge as she went to toss a leaf into the water. The architecture and greenery are stunning. I could stare at the fountains and masonry work all day. It's a fun visit, and I would come yearly if I lived out here. It was my first time visiting the San Antonio River Walk and it was definitely must see on my trip! The River Walk itself seems long so I wasn't able to see it all in a short time, but I did enjoy what I did see! We went on a Wednesday afternoon, and it was still very busy and full of boat tours and people walking. I really loved the multitude of restaurants and even little bars nestled into the River Walk, and we did stop for ice cream along the way! The parking was a little difficult to navigate, and there were a few instances of trash and food randomly along the path which could be improved in the future. I've been on many cities river trails and can say without hesitation that the San Antonio River Walk is my favorite. I can't believe I never reviewed this experience. The river walk popped in my head this morning so I knew I needed to review. We happened to be here on Thanksgiving Day 2020. We were making our way back across the United States on an extended road trip we took for the entire month of November. We got lucky and our hotel was right on the river walk so we could access it directly from the hotel's first floor. When we first started walking, I couldn't believe how beautiful and picturesque it is. The weather was perfect so we just kept walking. The river walk is 15 miles long and it flows through 5 miles of downtown San Antonio. The best part of the river walk is it is a free attraction. There is plenty of shopping for all who wish to shop till they drop. A ton of restaurants serving up plenty of Tex Mex food and other types of food with dining right on the river. There is a boat ride tours and boat taxi's that will take you all along the river walk. Many bridges that span over the river for great photos to be taken. Lots of stairs that allow you to get back up to street level too. The walk features art, culture and history so there is something here for everyone. I was surprised at how many people were still out and about since Covid was going on, but people were just enjoying the holiday after being cooped up for so long. The river walk is well cared for and it's so fun to hang out. At night it is lit up and those that crave the nightclub scene can really have a great evening at many of the venues. Sadly, the riverwalk is getting a little sketchy. The passed-out drug addicts are becoming more and more prevalent. On our recent visit, my family felt very uncomfortable walking the block and a half from our hotel stepping around people unconscious on the sidewalk. The meal and drink prices have skyrocketed in the last couple of years. Alot of the people actually walking around on the riverwalk can also be scary. My advice is to save some money and take your family somewhere else. read more

So here's my pros and cons about walking on the river walk: Pros- trees, fish, nature, turtles, ducks, birds, the river has its own beauty. The boat parades are cool too. I had been to the River Walk many times usually with out of state visitors. There is really no natural wonders to see because the river is lined with with restaurants, gift shops, and hotels on both banks. The best thing is to see are the historical buildings built along the river. For me, it is a good side trip when taking visitors to The Alamo. read more

The San Antonio River Walk is a one of a kind experience in South Texas. As a kid, I remember this place to be more magical than it was in May 2025 when I brought my pre-teen daughters. The owner of the roofing company that I hired said when he and his family were here for spring break, that the entire man-made river was drained for cleaning. Lol. It is much nicer (& cooler) to view early in the morning or late at night, but be mindful of weirdos, drunks, and drug addicts lurking. Many areas were well-manicured and trash-free, but then again... I knocked off a star because the river was a lot trashier than I remember it ever being. Floating trash in several places. San Antonio's nightlife scene is all about letting loose, and the River Walk is a great place to start. Much like the French Quarter, you can walk with your drink along the river. You can even take your cocktail to go around the downtown area too. Located below street level, The River Walk is also a city park lines with restaurants, shops, and bars with live music (many of which have street entrances in addition to river entrances). You can ride the barge down the river, but be sure not to fall or jump in because there is a $500 fine if you do. It's also a suitable place to go for an early morning run. It had been more than a decade since we were last on the Riverwalk. I wanted to show the kid the Riverwalk and San Antonio with its history and ode to Mexican culture. Twelve years after our last visit, the Riverwalk has changed. There are still some of the same restaurants; some of the same bars; some of the same souvenir stores. The boats still do hourly tours (although the price has really gone up). The bridges crossing the river are still iconic. The views along the river are still beautiful. But the vibe is completely different. The sidewalks are not as crowded, which I suppose is good. The restaurants along the Riverwalk are not as full. The bars are not as busy. There are more empty buildings. The river seems dirtier. It is just different. The hustle and bustle, the party vibe has given way to something more staid. That's not all bad. After visiting the River Walk again a week or so ago, I thought my 2015 review really needed an update! I lived in San Antonio very briefly after college, but I also have family in the city, so I've been visiting for decades and often. So I'm not sure how many times I've visited the River Walk, and it's really changed in the years since I've been visiting it, too! When people refer to the River Walk, they're usually referring to the portion of the River Walk that runs through downtown San Antonio. It loops under and over bridges, past restaurants and bars (some historic and great - not just tourist traps). You can walk along it, boat on it (including dinner cruises), and drink through it (open containers are okay here). It can feel a little touristy and get a little rowdy, but it can also be beautiful (twinkly lights, stone bridges, dining along the river). And there's little else that is as San Antonio as spending a day or an evening on this portion of the River Walk! So it's a must see/experience for tourists on a first visit to the city. But the River Walk is more than just this portion. The Museum Reach (a 2009 extension) extended the River Walk to the Pearl, one of the best areas of San Antonio (a formerly industrial area - which included a historic brewery - that has been turned into one of the best attractions the city has to offer: a farmers market, great restaurants and bars, great outdoor space, a small food hall, a great market, and more). This is the portion of the River Walk I most frequent (and where I spent some time last weekend). Still some beautiful waterfront, the Grotto, bars and restaurants where you can sit and enjoy the view and people watching. In 2011, the River Walk was extended in the opposite direction; the Mission Reach extended the River Walk from Downtown to Mission Espada, which allows people to walk or bike to each of San Antonio's Missions (which make up the UNESCO World Heritage Missions). This is a great portion to visit if you're active and love to get some exercise while experiencing a city's culture. The River Walk adds so much to the city. Each portion of the River Walk is a little different, but each of its 15 miles is worth visiting and exploring. It's one of the most special things about this very special American city! read more

Reminds me a bit of what I've heard about New Orleans and a little bit of what I saw in Vegas with people merrily drinking in public. The #1 thing we were told to check out for our San Antonio trip was the Riverwalk. There is so much to do and see on the Riverwalk: walk, eat, shop, and enjoy a Riverboat tour. We did them all. We walked the riverwalk one day then did the riverboat tour another day & there was so much more to see & learn that we would have missed out on if it wasn't for the Riverboat tour so I highly recommend doing both. This looks like a happening place to be, a little too happening for me, honestly. If you like having drinks in a beautiful setting surrounded by lots of other people having drinks and meandering slowly, then go on a Saturday night. The bars are open, the boat rides look incredibly fun, and the lighting was like Mardi Gras with river tours. This was not my scene; I took a half mile stroll down and back at a quick pace to say I saw it, and ran out of there to pass out early after a day of driving and hiking across the Texas wilderness from Dallas to San Antonio. However, I know that this would be extremely fun for most people, so I won't hold it against them. The next morning on the other hand was fantastic. Quiet stroll in the other direction for about half a mile with only other walkers and joggers next to the beautiful river and under architecture you won't see anywhere else. And all this for absolutely no cost, mind you! I loved seeing the ducks swimming, squirrels scavenging, and grackles grackling. Getting to pause and look up at the buildings and enjoy the serenity. Truly is a must see, just consider what side speaks to you... the bouncing night scene or the peaceful morning stroll. read more

A must visit when in San Antonio! The San Antonio River Walk is a beautiful area with plenty of shopping, restaurants and things to see as you walk along the river. Our hotel was on the river walk and every day we enjoyed strolling along, people watching and learning about the history of this region. We took a boat tour that gave us even more information about the history and previous floods. Great value and plenty of sites to see within walking distance. Did you really go to San Antonio if you did not stop by the River Walk? A fun tourist location. This concept should be adapted by more cities! It is very shaded throughout the riverwalk due to being lower than street level and all the vegetation. It seems like a good place to hang out on a hot day because of this! One thing awesome about the riverwalk is it is close to lots of other touristy things such as the Alamo, Ripley's Believe it or not, and the Western Art Musuem are some examples. Definitely a fun place to come at nighttime. They've got lots of bars on the river walk, many having live music. I do wish they had some shops on the riverwalk. The water seems pretty dirty, it's a good thing no one swims in it!
