Between July to Nov bills, the bills are cut between the 25th, and now backed up to the 18th for Nov. AGAIN... I GET PAID ON THE 6TH EVERY DAMN MONTH and SAWS manages to administer Late fees to my account approx 50% of the time because of how their billing is set up. And theres no recourse? I recently purchased a home and called San Antonio Water System (SAWS) to change the account name from the seller's name to my name, the new owner. The house had been empty for more than 10 months, and instead of just transferring service by putting in my name like I asked, they changed the account ownership to me AND sent out a technician who opened the water main from the street to my house while nobody was home which ruptured a valve in the house and flooded the inside of my new home. I called SAWS Customer Service as soon as I walked into the flooded house and they admitted by phone to having turned on the water. They left no notice, and SAWS did not call or email me to let me know they were turning on the water. Now, after 3 months of calling them and filing claim forms with SAWS Claims Representative Melissa Gonzales and SAWS Claims Adjuster Hope Villa, and thousands of dollars in damage, they simply sent an email saying they are not taking responsibility. All this, without either employee doing their jobs. They did not look at photos of the damage and did not come out to the house to see physical damage they caused. Obviously, this is not how this is going to end. Now, I'm forced to retain an attorney, contact my city councilperson, take to online reviews to warn other innocent unsuspecting homeowners, contacting local media, and trying to escalate this egregious negligence by "our" water utility to SAWS management. Take a look at these statistics: SAWS is owned by the City of San Antonio and their annual revenue is currently $337,900,000. San Antonio Water System's estimated revenue per employee is $308,000 and they have 1,097 employees. All this money, all this power as a monopoly, and after 3 months of stringing me along, they simply dismissed the claim even though they admitted to turning on the water without permission on 2 separate occasions when I called them. This is a very simple matter. They have the money and insurance to handle small claims such as this one, but unfortunately, when you deal with such a big and powerful organizations such as this one, the little guy has to sometimes continue to push to seek fairness and justice. read more

Water pipe burst Friday at 10am, they said 8 hours and all fixed and here we are sitting here waiting still on Saturday at 6pm or to be fixed .Then we had to get a hotel and SAWS wouldn't pay for our hotel.Then we call SAWS for the tenth time asking for a update and if the water is on.Then they say another 4 HOURS even though they said it would be done at 6.I could of fixed it myself but no SAWS doesn't do anything to help so now we are looking for another hotel and another 250 DOLLARS! SAWS has been charging me $70.03 for a sewer service charge since April 2023. I had a commode running in February 2023. So, I had a payment plan to pay the high water bill which has since been paid for. The problem I have is that when the payment plan was first discussed, the SAWS employee did not tell me that the $70.03 sewer charge would continue until the commode got replaced/repaired. Grrr These guys have complete control of one of our most valuable resources. They keep our plants green, keep us sanitary, keep us from going thirsty. There's only one company that lays pipes around town, and can get you the water. This is a municipal owned company that always seems to be okaying pay raises for the board, and rate hikes for the customers. A municipally owned monopoly. What could possibly go wrong? I'm disgruntled because SAWS went and bought one of the nicest buildings in the whole city along 281. Ever been in there? That place is nice. They sometimes give out trees and plants, at your expense, to the people who stand in line while they extol the virtues of water saving. When things go wrong, and water starts to leak, expect to pay some high bills. They take a look at plumbing bills if you had a busted pipe and some pencil pusher comes up with a discount for your water bill if it's suddenly catastrophically high. They quit cutting off water service during the pandemic, but now they're back at it. Can't pay your SAWS bill? You're gonna get cut off. Get cut off? Your place is going to get condemned and you're going to have to move out or pay. See the power these guys wield? When there is a water leak, I've seen them take weeks to get out and fix it, to stop the literal river flowing down the street into the storm drains. The water here is super hard, and tastes weird compared to other cities' water. Why do we have to add fluoride to the water? I didn't agree to that. I'd prefer to drink bottled water. read more

It is best NEVER to mail in a payment to SAWS! 7 too 10 days ago I mailed in my payment on time as I have since 2017. Friday I received a short curt notice that the payment hadn't been received and I was facing a cut off. As with other utilities there had been no brief voice mail that the payment hadn't been received. As with other utilities there was no "courtesy" reminder, as it can happen that payments get list in the mail. I called in at 8 am the next business day. After several minutes of recordings of how "important" my call was I was able to speak to 2 different representatives to get my call taken care of. When I questioned one of the representatives about what happened to Customer Service in regards to long time paying customers I was schooled and put in my place with "...oh it has been 6 years since a third party strictly handles payments...we don't take credit of that [service] any longer." Not one word of regret or even an apology that I had difficulty regarding a lost payment. I was a Service Representative for close to 40 years. If I had failed to atleast express regret that a customer, especially a long time paying customer had to go through such difficulty, I woul have been written up with a warning of possible termination of employment. The company I worked at at was AT&T. You might think they know a thing or two about customer service. This unnecessarily 35 minute call this morning has given me a very bad start to my day. Update from the 7th. The took the big steel plate and swept the loose dirt into the hole and left. Now warning sign for the hole they left. Watched that night all the cars either driving over it or coming to a stop before rolling over it. Now on the 9th a Saws worker is there blocking the hole with his truck and the safety cones now. I understand that water supply is not the fault of our water co., nor that employees are responsible to take our frustrations on. I recently saw a SAWS female VP on the news & was appalled by her smug direction to the public on water use, fines or the added forced donation charge on our bills, upstart charge. As she stated we unable to opt out of donation, added charge on our bill. This is a public service we all need, one company to choose from, but not for this woman to be a spokeperson with a smug dictator manner. Highly recommend! Fast and efficient, very helpful with all our questions about having hard well water!

I've come to their office a few times for special events including the rain barrel pick up, Spring bloom event (where they give a free plant) and the SAWs tour. The people are always friendly and welcoming. They have one main garage and outside parking, but some events are better than others when it comes to directing traffic. If you have to park in the garage for an event, plan to come early because the entrance and exit is a bit of a pain to get in/out of the garage. Expect about 10-15 minutes to leave the garage during peak times. The inside of the building has a great lobby where they usually set up a welcoming group and there's excellent facilities for classes that are hosted either in the cafeteria or other meeting rooms. We've had some representatives come out for the water initiatives and Water Saver rewards and they are always professional and helpful. I love how SAWs tries to encourage conservation and even gives you rebates to learn more about it! read more

I praised SAWS during the recent 20" main break. The company was awesome. They did everything right over the Memorial Day weekend. That was then, this is now. Going on the second week of a reported, unrepaired water leak in front of the fire hydrant across from 18225 Shadow Canyon Drive. Something needs to be done about these tyrants, this shady business needs to be reconstructed from the ground up. The only reason they're able to charge what they do and lie to you about your usage is because they have a monopoly in the area. Then when confronted, they always say "maybe you have a leak" can you go outside and look for "green patches". I called to make a payment arrangement for the following Friday from which the bill was due and I was assured there was no risk of disconnection, what happens? Someone came out the Thursday before the bill was supposed to be paid and they disconnected my water. Absolutely worst service.l!!! I have placed FIVE calls for them to replace or repair their valves so the water can be shut off to do pipe work in my house. Plumber said he can't shut the water off because the valves to turn it off are rusted up and he doesn't want to force them for fear they might break. FIVE calls and 3 MONTHS and still no repair. This is absolutely ridiculous. I've read review and review of dissatisfied customers. WHY can't something be done to make these people accountable for the poor service? read more

I went to pay my bill this morning (25th) and noticed it was an exorbitant amount comparably speaking. I asked my husband to go check the water meter out front and sure enough it was leaking. We called to report it and it turns out that meter guy reported it to SAWS (not sure what day), but crews came out the 22nd and decided it was on the residential side. We received no notice of this and when asked why we weren't they informed us it was not their policy to do so. I understand as a homeowner we are responsible for several things, but if we leave before sunrise and don't return until sunset (or pull straight into garage) how will we ever notice it. I'd also like to add that a neighbor this same week had SAWS working on his pipes which had created a mess which led us to believe the puddle down the street was caused by them. Another neighbor next door had a leak as well at the meter, but they lucked out because it was SAWS responsibility. Again, when confronted with why they didn't inform us they said it wasn't their policy and when asked if they were so concerned about conserving water (currently stage 2, which the supervisor couldn't answer when asked) why would this not be policy. read more

I stopped by the #SpringBloom event to see how many people were out early to snag a free plant... the answer is A Lot. Too Many for My Patience, so after navigating parking, which was staffed to make it as painless as possible, I darted my way past the line to the booths. I snagged some herbs from a local growning association and left happy I'd made the effort. There were still freebies to be had for those in line, so the wait was apparently worth it as far as that goes..looked like it was moving at a decent clip, but I had tacos on the brain, so paying a few bucks for my herbs was totally worth it to me. Thanks to SAWS for holding this well-organized event and all their efforts to encourage us to plant what grows here without much maintenance. read more

Mixed feelings about our good friends at SAWS. My first apartment included water, but when I moved in with my BF, we had to make a separate SAWS account to pay our bill that way. When we initially set it up, we received a message stating that we'd need to pay a $50 "credit" fee, which I felt was completely absurd. This message was sent separately from our actual bill, and I never paid it or heard any more about it. On the bright side, SAWS emailed bills and their website is relatively informative and easy to navigate. On the downside, the site is very particular about passwords- they have to be an absurd length and include upper and lower case letters, AND punctuation/symbols, AND a number, making for a secret code no one can ever remember. While their online bill pay system is user friendly in some ways, having to constantly reset and confirm your password every month pretty much eliminates the "quick and easy" and makes it a pain and a hassle. Though it was probably more of a property issue than a SAWS issue, I really dislike the new format of having apartment building users each have separate accounts but split water fees by residents- I did not find that this was an accurate or fair way to split the water bills. For starters, I am particularly water-conscious and make efforts to conserve, and live with just one other person; whereas other residents had large families and were less conscious of their water-wasting ways. They were happy with the bills because they were lower than expected, whereas I felt mine was consistently high and moreover, when multiple residents moved out of our building, there was no decrease in payments? How does that even work? SAWS has a monopoly on city water services, so there really isn't much to be said or done as there isn't an alternative company to choose. I appreciate their education components and community involvement, and they have some cool ad campaigns/media presence, but could do better at actual service. read more

SAWS will randomly overcharge 1 or 2 months per year. Someone in SAWS must be skimming somehow. I call it "CORRUPTION". My own bill went crazy for no reason and then went back down to normal magically. Someone at my workplace just had the same thing happen with a sudden $600 bill for just her and a toddler and no lawn to water! This city/county run operation is stealing from people. read more

SAWS really is terrible about customer service. I reported a broken water meter last summer and it was never fixed. (Good news: my bill never reflected true water usage; bad news: my sprinkler system lacked sufficient water pressure so my yard died.) Meanwhile, the valve at the street was also broken, so when there was a burst pipe in the house and we shut it off from the street, the water didn't actually stop and the damage accumulated. When I called SAWS to request they fix the valve at the street, they insisted on charging a visit fee of $12, despite the fact that there was more than $20K worth of damage on my home because of their broken valve. The people who answer the phone are generally incompetent, and sometimes rude. (Sometimes they are very sweet, just unable to help because the organization is so poorly run.). My neighbor was able to get his meter fixed when he started emailing their executive leadership. If you're struggling to get basic service out of them, you might try that. Good luck! read more

When there is no competition in the market place we get poorly ran establishments like SAWS. Lack of compassion, poor customer service, and unapologetic attitude. They shut off water to one of my units when i was current on payments on Friday night at 6 pm. It just happens I have a pregnant tenant, when i called to see what the issue was. The service center was closed. It's Monday and i cant get a manager on the phone and the person i spoke to is poorly trained and makes excuses instead of owning up to their continuous failures. Overall, I've never needed much from SAWS, but when I do, I find myself waiting WAY too long on the phone and then kinda sorta getting the run around. Let the record state, that I've lived in two other places in San Antonio and never had this much trouble paying my water bill. Since moving into a townhome, I have gone through three different phone calls with SAWS to get them to update the bill in my name and my email address. For a year that I've lived in the same place, I have never received an email statement or alert when my payment is due, but then all of a sudden, I'll hear from my landlord that I'm past due. Turns out, he's been getting the notifications, but added me to the account, so I should also be getting them. After this third and most recent phone call, I feel like we made some headway, and hopefully now I'll be receiving e-bills. Sure, I can set my own calendar reminders, but a girl only has so much room on her calendar, and let's be honest, it's their job to send my monthly e-bill. read more

I am hoping to help bring light to a situation with SAWS disrupting a quiet neighborhood at night with no warning. We have a neighbor who had some sewage problems for a few months now, a known issue that was likely not managed properly by either the home owner and / or the city. Last night was the second night in an ~1 month timeframe when SAWS came out and dug up the street to address the said sewage issues. This was so disturbing and disruptive (extremely bright lights and LOUD grinding / banging noises) that our two tiny boys (ages 1 and 3) were awake and exhausted the entire night. I had neighbors calling and texting ( one in tears) with similar situations. We had no warning this would be occurring; despite the fact the family who had the sewage issue knew in advance (they were staying elsewhere). I called the police to see if they could come talk to the workers and ask for a daytime crew. They did show up to talk with the workers but left. The disruption continued. My husband also tried to talk with them and ask for a supervisor. The workers became upset and referred to "their boss giving them orders" as more important. They now called the police and had them banging on our door telling us this was a city matter and there is nothing to be done (making matters worse with our children). I was very sad to see the problem handled this way. I have great respect for our city police officers, they have such a hard job. The SAWS workers misled them regarding a very sensitive problem, leaving us helpless at 12:30am. While SAWS was apparently trying to restore service to a family that was not even home (they had warning since it was their problem and left), the entire neighborhood and their peacefulness was completely lost and disregarded for an entire night (~4:30am). We are tired parents with small children who both work long hours during the week. SAWS needs to change their policy, working during the day for non urgent issues and providing a heads up for true emergencies (this was a lingering problem). WHY do some customers have a sewage fee and others don't?? I live at the edge of San Antonio's city limits and used to have Bexar Met and had to pay a $25 separate sewage fee to SAWS. I didn't understand why, especially after living in town previously and not having to pay the additional fee, but, okay. After SAWS bought out Bexar Met I thought the sewage fee would be removed because it's all under one company. But, nooooo. It has steadily increased until my sewage fee is $62 extra per month and my total water bill is $125-$145 per month. THAT IS RIDICULOUS!! SAWS thinks that because they are the only water company that they can charge whatever they want! Yet, most customers in town average $40-$60 per month. I've been paying atleast double that for 10 years because I chose to move to the edge of town and I'm tired of it. San Antonio needs another water company so consumers have a choice and are not forced to pay whatever SAWS chooses to charge us if we want water. SAWS, SHAME ON YOU. read more

Now that I have had a day to cool off, I will try and write an objective review on SAWS water barrel purchase and distribution event yesterday. I got the offer from SAWS, made my purchase, selected my pick up time (first one at 8am) got a confirmation with bar code and printed. For some reason, SAWS felt it necessary to send the same thing via mail, days before the pick up. I got mine 2 days before pick up day in the mail and it was orange. On Saturday, I left early around 7am and hit the traffic jam around 7:30 on 281 southbound at St Mary's. I saw 400-500 cars from multiple directions and at 8:00am to 8:30 nothing moved? At 8:45 I called SAWS got a rep, tried to explain the problem and my concerns and the rep only wanted to repeat the same thing to me several times and would not listen to my concerns. Now it's 9:15, still NO MOVEMENT, so I try another direction and drove further down and looped around so now I am 281 northbound sitting in the same traffic jam trying to exit St Mary's. Also, it was rainy and foggy that morning and not a safe situation for stopped cars on a highway. I am looking for signs, police directing traffic, anything..... all I saw was frustration and people doing whatever they wanted to accomplish the task of getting a barrel. As I patiently followed the rules, with my 8:00am fast pass pickup in hand, I finally make it to SAWS HQ roughly by 10am, only to have someone replace my fast pass orange receipt for a piece of paper with the #1 (for one barrel)? You could only purchase 1-2 barrels. Really, shouldn't that info be in the barcode? Was it necessary for this extra step in the process? So to recap, we have hundreds, assuming thousands, coming to pick up barrels all on ONE DAY. Really? I know a little about process engineering, and when you have these volumes pouring in from about 6 different streets into ONE STREET at SAWS HQ (which did have police directing) you will get a huge bottleneck. What a surprise! In addition, at SAWS HQ there were lots of people handing out stuff, even better, that one street led to Alamo stadium where all the barrels were. They had at least 10-12 bays with multiple people to load them into your vehicle. Again, only one or two bays were being used because you had one street feeding into Alamo stadium? Yes, I finally got my barrel around 10:30. Besides the traffic process fiasco, I am also assuming many did not come at their allotted time, which they should have anticipated. Consider this review a retrospective to learn from and improve. I have always read feedback is a gift! If I could, I would have rated zero stars, and the $20 savings was lost in gas and my time. I will think long and hard on future SAWS offers. read more

I just moved in to a rental house I called saws to get my water started and supposedly they came out and read the meter and one month later I got a $200 bill somehow I had used 20,000 gallons of water. I never watered my yard and I had no leaks of any kind. The next month I didn't change my routine of water use and my gallons went to 5000. Luckily for me they did their own investigation... yeah as one would imagine they determined it couldn't have been their over sight hell that would mean they overcharged me and would owe me money. When I called in they said to pay online and then call in with a confirmation number, rep did not tell me that if I called in the next morning with confirmation even though I already paid the day before they were going to charge me same day service charge to have it turned back on. SAWS is estimating water usage again. I've heard other complain about this practice in the past but it has never happened to us....until now. Just rec'd my Jan bill with Dec-Jan usage listed. SAWS says I used 8,200 gallons of water for the month, which is impossible as there are only 2 in our household. A quick check of our meter showed no leaks so I compared today's reading with the reading allegedly taken by SAWS back on Jan 14. Guess what? They were off....way off. The Jan 14 reading listed on our bill was off, which tells me they actually estimated our usage instead of physically reading our meter. That is wrong....way wrong. As a result, our bill went from $45 to $60 and we've never had a $60 bill in 20+ years of living here. I tried calling SAWS but customer service only work Mon-Fri unless you have a leak. So I instead sent them a "polite pete" email with all facts and demanded that my meter actually be read asap. I did the math as per the instructions on the billing to determine usage in gallons and it turns out they over-estimated my usage by 3,000 gallons. Not cool at all. I expect SAWS will tell me that our meter was indeed read by someone and that our issues is due to a keying or other error. Whatever. Our bill is due in about 10 days so if SAWS does not correct this bill by then, I plan to pay our regular, average bill until they resolve it. Shame on you SAWS for estimating our bill. The meter's out front and easily accessible so there's really no reason for this to happen. Looking forward to what they have to say when they call be back during "regular business hours". read more

Landlord didn't pay the water bill and I didn't know until I got home Friday night to no running water. I got absolutely NO warning at all. CPS will post a notice on your door but I guess saws just likes it to be a surprise or something. If I had any idea the bill wasn't being paid I would obviously opt to pay it rather than go DAYS without running water. I would LOVE to pay it RIGHT NOW but basic human necessities get to have the weekend off, isn't that great. Lucky for me they have better hours than banks do (I work at one... And I work Saturdays) and the girl on the "emergency" line tells me I can't get anything paid or turned back on until Monday. I HAVE TO GO THREE DAYS WITHOUT RUNNING WATER. Apparently I am the only one this has EVER happened to because the girl working the "emergency" saws number doesn't know crap. She keeps telling me I have to ask the "billing" dept on Monday. I asked her how much the fine would be if I took the lock off my water and she said to call back on Monday. I KNOW you know, lady. I asked her what I could do and she told me to take it up with my landlord. Ok but that's not getting my water on is it? Heartless, horrible, if i had any choice I would never have anything else to do with these people after this humiliating, degrading experience. Lucky for them it's a freaking monopoly so everyone just has to deal with whatever garbage saws wants to put them thru.
