Most importantly, residents are treated like human beings, with dignity, kindness and respect. John was also a straight shooter from the beginning, and we always felt fortunate to have found Gordon Manor. Ultimately, my dad ended up moving to another facility to be closer to family. Even during that difficult transition, the entire staff could not have been more gracious and respectful. They never once made us feel uncomfortable, and it was obvious how much the staff genuinely cared about my dad. That meant more to our family than I can express and spoke volumes about the relationships they build with their residents. Finding the right home for a loved one with memory issues can be incredibly difficult, but choosing Gordon Manor was an easy decision. I also encourage families to review their publicly available licensing records through the California Department of Social Services. When we reviewed them, the absence of complaints and citations was remarkable, and based on our experience, not surprising. Their team guided us through the transition with such compassion that it eased a burden I didn't realize I was carrying. I wanted her to be somewhere she would be protected, respected, and truly cared for. Kensington has given her all of that--and more. I visit her almost every day, and from the very first moment, I saw the staff treat her not as a patient, but as a person they genuinely care about. One star given for cleanliness of areas and room, and some very kind staff. This is surface level, however, as LO did not receive care consistently and staff did not have training to do most of the basics. The staff will be attentive on the surface, on day one, then vanish. Management will be all supportive if you keep your mouth shut and any updates will be sporadic, not truthful, inconsistent and sadly, non supportive. Senior leadership lacks oversight and you will be gas lighted on multiple levels. The price is sky high and you do not get what you pay for. Food is good if you order off menu vs vats of food specials. Sadly, they simply do not care much for residents as evident on multiple visits and their motto of caring for your family member like family is not factual. Avoid this place.

We were worried that she would not get the same level of care in a "home" as she got from the family. Following a few wonderful referrals, we decided to try Retirement Plus. Mom moved into Retirement Plus on Chestnut Street in San Carlos on June 1, 2010. She loved it there. The gals taking care of her were absolutely wonderful. They treated her with respect and love, never lost patience with her, and took care of her every need. Every time anyone visited, Mom was always happy, clean and well fed. We were welcome to visit any time at all and spend the night with Mom if we wanted. As Mom's disease progressed they agreed to change her status to hospice even though it meant more work for them. Again, we never saw them treat her with anything but gracious, loving care. Even up to the very end they allowed my whole family (almost always 5-11 of us) to stay with her and they went out of their way to do everything in their power to make it easier on those of us watching Mom in her final days. I'll never forget the gals coming in to say good bye to Mom while waiting for the mortician to come take her away. They spoke lovingly of Mom's personality and wit while stroking her head and kissed her so gently goodbye. We could have never taken such good care of her at home especially as her disease progressed and she got weaker and weaker. If it is time for you parent to get better care, consider Retirement Plus. I'm so glad we did.

Silverado Belmont is the BEST. What a life saver. My husband moved in May 2017 from a high end…read morecare facility chain in Monterey where he was in the dementia unit with the highest care giver to patient ratio. He lost 50 lb in 5 mo, started to have seizures, learned he wasn't getting hardly any meds, showers only every 2 weeks...., it was terrible and I visited him almost daily. My husband is tall and an athlete - he likes to walk and he's strong and perhaps intimidating. That facility recommended Silverado Belmont because it specializes in dementia care. It was the best thing ever. It took me along time to trust Silverado after the previous terrible experience. Silverado gave me 6 sessions with a counselor for free. She was amazing. Silverado also has monthly family group meetings so all the loved ones and share and support each other. My husband is so happy at Silverado. The staff are very attentive. Everyone, from laundry, nursing, to caregivers in other neighborhoods help out. Its exceptional. The laundry staff and caregivers walk and dance with my husband and get him to smile and laugh. They are professionals. When he arrived it took 4 caregivers to change him. Now only one, and my husband helps out. The staff keep him doing as much as he can by himself encouraging him to brush his teeth, comb his hair, eat ice cream by himself, etc. Over 1 year ago my husband almost died from aspirating. Hospice came in with all the equipment and staff, including spiritual support, and a gifted speech therapist who determined he needed purred food and how to feed with slowly so he wouldn't aspirate. He just graduated out of Hospice after 12 months! His weigh is maintaining, very few seizures, and he's eating all his double portion meals. After he graduated out of Hospice, Silverado initiated a new program called "Hospice for Life." It is free to us and is like Hospice-light. He was the first to be in the program and I'm so grateful for the support. Communication was a big deal for me since I live 100 miles away and can only visit twice per week. The staff (nursing, hospice, family liaison, and caregivers) keep me informed weekly, if not more often. If there is even a slight wound, they call me. He's gone on several outings: 1 mile walk to Jamba Juice, Equestrian Center horse therapy, scenic drives and each time (even when I accompany) they send me photos. There have been a few times when things weren't perfect, but when I spoke with Management, they immediately and seriously listened and took action to correct the problem. The biggest things they do great: feed him, keep him clean, keep him safe. He as never escaped (like he did at the previous place). He is changed very often and showered AT LEAST 3x/week. He always has clean clothes and bedding. The barber is onsite and he's great and very reasonable. They have a dental hygienist and dentist who contract to visit residents in their rooms. They have a large activity staff who keep things fun. They play hoops with my husband, ping pong (early on when he could still play), puzzles, flower arranging, etc. Silverado also has many amazing guest musical performances. The second biggest thing is supporting the families and loved ones. They are like family to me now. I can't be more pleased. They put on family events thorough the year for various holidays with beautiful decorations, food and photos to share after. Communication is amazing and so important to me. For these reasons and more, I give Silverado Belmont a 5+ rating.

Our Family's Experience After Several Years at Silverado My…read moregrandfather lived at Silverado for several years, and after his passing, I feel comfortable sharing our family's experience. I waited to write this review because, while he was living there, our priority was always his care and well-being. Now that he has passed, I feel it is important for other families considering memory care to have a more complete picture of what our experience was like. There are definitely positives. The grounds are beautiful, and the Resident Activities staff were consistently present and, in our experience, very good. There are also individual employees who genuinely care about the residents and work hard. Unfortunately, there were also some significant and ongoing concerns that our family raised repeatedly over the years. Staffing One of our biggest concerns was caregiver staffing. There often did not seem to be enough caregivers available on the floor to adequately meet residents' needs. When families raised concerns about staffing, the response was generally that there were enough employees and that the issue was more about managing the existing staff effectively. After hearing this repeatedly over several years, we did not see meaningful improvement. Another issue is how staffing numbers are presented. Employees such as medication technicians and other onsite staff may be counted in the overall staffing numbers because they are trained in memory care, even though they may not actually be providing hands-on caregiver assistance to residents. As a family member, it can therefore be difficult to understand how many caregivers are actually available to assist residents at any given time. Additional 1:1 Care Families should also understand that if a resident develops behavioral or other care needs requiring additional supervision, the family may be asked to pay for a private 1:1 caregiver in addition to the regular cost of care. The facility does provide an assessment period after a resident moves in, but this is something I wish we had understood more clearly from the beginning. Families should ask very specific questions about what circumstances could result in additional 1:1 care and what those costs could be. The 1:1 caregivers are provided through outside contractors. I would encourage families to ask what provider options are available and how those providers are selected. Transparency is especially important when families are paying significant additional amounts for care. Resident Quality of Life Another concern was how often residents who could no longer walk were actually taken outside. In our experience, residents who were unable to walk did not routinely get outside unless there was a special event or an outside group visiting. For people living in memory care, many of whom spend most of their time indoors, access to fresh air, sunshine, and the outdoors seems like an important part of quality of life. Management and Leadership While there are a few individual managers and staff members who are capable and genuinely care, overall, we found the management team to be one of the biggest problems. Over the years, we experienced ineffective leadership, poor people-management skills, inconsistent professionalism, and very little accountability. There often seemed to be plenty of management, but not enough effective leadership where it mattered most: on the floor with the residents and the caregivers responsible for their daily care. Our family raised concerns repeatedly over the years, yet many of the same issues continued without meaningful change. What was particularly frustrating was the tendency to explain away problems rather than take ownership of them and make changes. The issue isn't a lack of titles or managers. It is a lack of effective leadership, accountability, and support where it is needed most. A memory care community can have beautiful facilities and plenty of administrative staff, but what matters most is whether the leadership is effectively supporting the caregivers and ensuring that residents receive the care and attention they deserve. Transparency and Perception There were also aspects of the facility that I found confusing as a family member. For example, physician names are displayed in the lobby, but some of the physicians whose names appear there did not actually work for Silverado. My understanding was that some had previously rented space in the building. This may be completely legitimate, but I think families should be able to easily understand which physicians actually provide care to residents. The Bottom Line Silverado is a beautiful community, and there are good people working there. But a beautiful building and pleasant surroundings aren't enough when you're entrusting the care of a loved one with memory loss to someone else. Families should ask very detailed questions about actual caregiver-to-resident coverage.

Before placing someone you love here, I strongly urge you to review the facility's public licensing and complaint records available through San Mateo Department of Social Services. Recent records include extremely serious allegations and/or substantiated findings involving resident safety and care, including sexual assault of a memory-care resident, medication mismanagement, unsanitary and urine-soiled bedding, unmet incontinence needs, failure to respond to residents' calls for assistance, missed medications, and inappropriate photographs of vulnerable residents. Our own experience has been equally concerning. My father went to the emergency room twice within the first six weeks at Oakmont, and his longtime physician at Menlo Medical Clinic urged us to find another facility after experiencing difficulty reaching staff to discuss his care and medication management. We personally found my father dressed in dirty clothing, unshaven, and sleeping in urine-soiled sheets. We ultimately moved him and his new home has made us realize just how bad Oakmont was for his mental and physical well being. My mother remains on the assisted-living side, but we are now taking immediate steps to move her as well. She has missed meals, rarely bathes without intervention, and has declined significantly since moving there. I recognize that some of this may be the natural progression of aging and cognitive decline, but the utter lack of communication and consistency of care has left us deeply concerned. Moving an elderly parent is enormously disruptive, so this is not a decision we are making lightly. Please do your research and read the public regulatory records before choosing Oakmont. Based on our family's experience, I cannot recommend this facility.
