Our Mom moved into the Sunrise of San Mateo Memory Care program after living in an assisted living apartment in another facility, She had vascular dementia and her disease had progressed to the point where she needed more care. we have been very pleased with the level of care provided for her. her caregivers were attentive and compassionate. The Memory Care is a lockdown floor so it is safe but she enjoyed outside visits with us, coffee downstairs and regular hair appointments in the facility. we were thankful and pleased with the care she received. it wasn't cheap, but we appreciated her care very much. read more

Sunrise San Mateo is a beautiful, cheerful home for my 91 year old mother-in-law. The activities director, Sanjay takes her to central park every day, pushing her wheelchair. She loves the activities, especially nerf volleyball (who knew?) ! The care manager, Joanne, is incredible -remembering so many of the details that make up a new life there in her new community. Dania, is a wonderful, caring nurse and she helped us find a doctor who comes to the facility to visit her, rather than having to drag her out to doctor's appointments. She gets her hair and nails done there weekly and goes on outings to a different restaurant every week as well as site seeing trips in the van to the coast. All this even though she's in a wheelchair! Last but certainly not least is the wonderful Theresa greeting you as you enter and helping with so many things, she knows all! Excellent care for my mom. She lived at Sunrise of San Mateo for almost 8 years. Started on Assisted Living Floor. Moved to memory care in the last 3 years. My mom would never have lasted the last 3 years had it not been for the kind, caring, attentive staff at Sunrise of San Mateo. My mom lived to 94 because the staff took such amazing care of her. Sunrise in San Mateo is definitely a place where I can truly say I can have my love one feels safe and at home. With continues training with their care staff definitely is a plus. There seems to be no detail related to my father's recovery that is beyond their ability to fix. I moved my mom into this facility Dec 2020, & at first was not happy with the management/nursing staff or how communication was not happening clearly or concisely for the caregivers to be able to do their job. After multiple complaints, by myself, & others, a changeover in staff & management happened, & things turned around significantly. What a vast improvement in the new management team & nursing staff. From Minnie, Sunrise Sr. director who is warm & friendly, compassionate & has good heart, has an open door policy to her residents & their families. Her clear communication via email was helpful regarding changes at the facility or issues as in Covid of when we could visit our loved ones, was informative, timely & beneficial especially if you didn't live close by. The nursing staff currently, Stella & Loa, is far & beyond amazing. They're warm, friendly & communicative, as well as cognizant of any changes of residents health issues that they have observed or developed. They coordinate with Dr's, physical therapist, other healthcare practitioners & family members on best health practice for their patients/residents. Meds are always being regulated & oversee'd by the med tech care team, such as amazing Norma, to be sure they are administer timely & correctly. Another amazing management staff member is Joanne the Sr. Manager of the caregivers group whose energetic, upbeat, personality is always looking for a solution to whatever issues I brought up to her. Joanne always communicated clearly to me, & made sure I was informed of any changes regarding my mom & her behavior changes as her dementia continue to increase. Joanne especially made a difference once she got hired as she took over as manager of the caregivers & provided the direction that was needed which enhanced the care being given. Not to forget the creativity of the Activities Director, Lisa & Joie who enjoyed getting residents involved in games, arts, watching movies, current events etc. as they were always accommodating to us when we needed a ride to a Dr's appt via their shuttle/van. Lastly, the welcoming admin. team: Teresa, Faye, Trish, Princess, all would greet you with a smile, give our dog a treat or 2, help with understanding our billing questions, or get you the help you needed to your questions or concerns. The entire staff at San Mateo Sunrise are there to provide love & care for your loved ones, support you & keep you informed allowing you to be able to leave your dearest family members in very capable & the best of hands. read more

If you want your love one to die quickly and wast your money , then let them stay here in this dump. I am and my wife are professional elderly part time companions. We visit family members elderly when they are out of town. As I see two persons here I smell pee and poop as I walk in room which carpet flooring is very soiled as is the whole building. One person has a very bad duper rash too.There rooms are very dirty as well. As I ask staff to change there duper and clean them out get a response that can make you sick. They just plop there food in room and do not help hand feed them. This place is so understaff it makes me sick. In all the two persons we visit say we get want to die. Thats correct they lost the will to live. And besides they charge you a arm and a leg to have them stay here. I hope group of lawyers can shut this operation down and give all the persons staying here some dignity to live there last days happy. read more

As I read these reviews, it is clear that people who live here have a bad experience, but it's a nice building, and they hire nice sales people to show you around their clean and newish facility. After watching my family member's stay here, and talking with many residents, I wholeheartedly agree. Nice tour, superficially nice place, but that's it. My advice, after having a relative who lived in Sunrise, and talking with other residents and their families, enjoy the tour, and don't return. Ask them to stop calling--they will call for years. My father's experience here was what I can only characterize as storage. Very expensive storage. They have an activities room, and if you fit their schedule and format, you may enjoy it. There is zero personalized attempt to find what your relative enjoys, or makes them thrive. ZERO. The food has been described by all residents I've spoken with as horrible. There is ZERO concern on nutrition generally, and no resident-specific health needs. Here you are in the heart of California, where great produce and food is readily available, spending a lot to live here, but being fed as though you're in the mess hall. I've seen behind the curtain, spoken with many who lived in Sunrise, including my own relative, and many others, and none say they are happy living there. During his stay, many families moved their relatives elsewhere, despite the potential upheaval & cost. And if you're considering it, please note that you don't get the community fee back--a free bonus for them if you do move. This is a corporate company with only one motivation--profit. I've spoken to one woman at their corporate office who I would designate as one of the nastiest people I've dealt with on my many years on earth...many of those years spent dealing with the public. There were several lies told by local management, and one level above them. My father's wallet was left on their shuttle to the doctor with a good deal of cash, and of course it was never returned. Money left him on other occasions from his room. The local locations get some reasonably nice people who come and go, but go they do. Turnover is high, which would indicate it's not only a bad place to live, but likely a bad place to work. The name should be changed to "Sunset senior dying" as the people living in Sunrise are more motivated to die than they would be if they lived somewhere where compassion and care were the top priorities. Move somewhere where you or your loved ones will be treated with dignity & care, not to here or ANY Sunrise. read more

I sing with a choir at my work that visits senior homes in the San Mateo area every holiday season. Sunrise is one of our stops and we always have a pleasant experience. The facility is bright and comfortable, the staff is always smiling and appreciative of our visit. Pets seem to be welcome as each year there have been birds and this year there was a sweet dog that greeted us as we entered. It's a lovely place. read more

One star is far too much for this place!! I cannot believe what they did to my mom and the family over the Christmas holiday. They contacted the family about my mother, wanting to move her to the Reminiscence Community on the 4th floor. I was already out of the country for Christmas and asked them to hold off until I got home on the 8th of January. They still continued to insist and then on the 22nd of December we got an email stating that she had been moved. Could not believe the insensitive nature by which this was handled. She was lost without her good friend downstairs and lonely because no one really carried on a conversation upstairs and she is no way at that level yet. We have moved her since and she's a whole new person. Please just be careful. read more

I can't speak to other people's experience but, for us, Sunrise San Mateo, was a godsend. I have nothing but good things to say about our experience there. We moved my father in law there after he entered hospice care and needed more care than family members were able to give. We all knew he didn't have much time left and after a really bad experience at a local long term care facility were looking for a peaceful supportive environment for this last phase of his life. Rowena and her staff took us in and did everything they could to support us through a very difficult time. My father in law was not the easiest of patients but they treated him with real kindness and respect. He had a lovely room and the place was kept spotlessly clean. We had the opportunity to speak with many of the other residents and they all seemed very content and happy to be there. For my part, I'm just very grateful to them for all they did to support our family through such a sad time. read more

A five star rating for Sunrise San Mateo is well deserved. Having had my mother in an assisted living home prior, I have the ability to compare. In my opinion there is no comparison. My mother came to Sunrise San Mateo in Hospice. The care she has received from the staff is incredible. They pay attention to detail and actually care about my mother. They coordinate with Hospice and I truly do no worry about my Mother now that she is there. I know that if even the slightest incident takes place, i.e., a small cut on the hand, I receive a phone call immediately. The residents are friendly, welcoming and very happy. It's a smaller facility so it is easier for people to get to know one another. They have activities taking place all of the time. I believe a great Assisted Living Facility is 'great' because the care starts at the top. The Executive Director, Director of Sales, nursing staff, and the care staff all have the right attitude. They are responsive, friendly and get to know the residents AND their families. I highly recommend Sunrise San Mateo and am grateful my Mom is there. read more

My Grandma moved to Sunrise about a year ago. This location specializes in dealing with residents who have dementia & alzheimers. My grandma can be a handful & at times can be difficult to help(pride,I suppose...) But she seems to have found her place at Sunrise. My first impression of this place was,"WOW!"... this location looks like a mansion. It is beautifully decorated & very well kept. I love that about this place. The environment is spacious & easy for the residents to move about. The dining area is fantastically set up & I like that the chairs have wheels on them,which makes it easier for some of the handicapped residents. The staff is also wonderful. Before living at Sunrise, my grandma lived at another retirement home & I can say that I see a huge improvement in her attitude towards living in a home. I know it must be really difficult to live in a retirement home & feel less independent,but the staff is so hoelpful & attentive that I think it makes it a lot easier to live there .I can't stress how great their crew of staff members are- from the maintenance &cleaning staff,to the nursing aids,cooks,waiters,and the management...they're all wonderful!! You can really tell that the people who work there WANT to work with the senior community. They all display patience & concern towards everyone. my grandma is always mentioning certain staff members who,according to her,are in the right field of work bcuz she can tell they really care. Sunrise is also very well organized. Everyday they post & hand out the day's schedule so the residents can plan accordingly. They have a lot of different activities going on throughout the day that benefit the residents. They also have a bus that they take on outings for the residents(CVS,resturant outings) some days, they even have live music! I really believe this place is a great place. It sucks when you can't take care of your loved one the way you'd like,but Sunrise gives me peace of mind knowing that my Grandma is in good hands when I'm not around to help. *my one problem with the place is their doors to the rooms & the garage door. They are a bit heavy & swing freely which can make things hard for people in a wheelchair or walker. The doors that lead out to the patio are controlled by a switch which is very nice!* read more

Please do not consider this place for your love one. What seems warm and welcoming on the outside turns into a big bad wolf. Please let my experience of them taking care of my mother warn you. The problems will start once you put the down payment on a room. It did with us. They tried not to give us the room that we had signed a contract on because a couple wanted to rent it and they would have received more money for the unit. Then we had to paint the unit ourselves because they wouldn't. The day we moved my mother into the unit I received a letter stating that she needed extra care and there would be a $1000.00 increase. I disagreed with them on it and they eventually called me back and said they had made an error. They continued to make these types of errors for the next 4 years. First I was asked if we were financially strapped and was told that $1000.00 a month was not material to them. I replied yes but $36000.00 was and that is what we would have paid 3 years later. When I expressed concern about my mothers care and how the rates were continuing to increase. I was told if I wasn't happy with my mother there then I should move her. At one stage they were charging her $600 extra a month to do your laundry twice a week. The executive staff must work on a commission basis. I looked up there corporate web page a couple of years ago. Their CEO gets a huge bonus. The caretakers were always very good to my mom. But unfortunately dealing with the executive staff got too hard to deal with any more we had to move my mother. Please make the right choice at the beginning of this journey because moving your parent as they get older is not and easy choice and it is very hard on the parent.
