We loved it! It took us about 2 hours to walk the grounds. I had read some negative reviews before we went, so I was a little worried, but we really enjoyed it. Many signs were faded or missing, but like another poster said, we could do a quick Google image search to find out names of things we were really interested in. As a whole, it could use a little TLC in some areas, but it was still worth the $20 admission and we were glad we went.

Had a great experience at the SD Botanic Garden for the "Orchids In The Wild" exhibit! So many beautiful plants and so much more to see!

It was by far the longest distance traveled to our tourist destinations and somewhat less rewarding. The highlight was a huge Brugmansia plant ( I call-it the trumpet plant). Other than that a lot of greenery and brown without much color. Checked off the list but would not return

San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, north of San Diego featured the Corpse plant aka voodoo plant in exhibition during its blooming period and I had to see. Plenty of parking and it's Gratis! It took a couple of trips because at first it was just a bud. Our second trip, a couple of petals had opened, showing the hues of purple and the air did smell unpleasant but not as bad. This plant's origin is from Sumatra. The botanical garden here had cared for it, pollinated it, from its growth for seven years until it bloomed. The bloom lasts only 48 hours before it's wilts and dies. There's more in depth info about this voodoo plant on boards which I posted here with my review. The Botanical Garden is expansive and there's a 4 mile walking path with signs to help guide you. Various countries and the plants are featured, many quite exotic. My pup and I started the walk but were only able to do over half the distance due to the intolerable heatwave and we were unprepared; we didn't bring H20, appropriate clothing and walking shoes. I commend my pup for being so curious and exploratory. She had the energy and excitement to continue but I was concerned of heat exhaustion, which is inevitable. Despite our condense walking expedition, we did get to see lots this garden had to offer. We only intended to visit the corpse plant in bloom but ended up seeing, exploring and experiencing more. Worthy of your visit. Recommend

Nice gardens! We went during their fall festival and got some extra fun activities. Making paper. Magic Show. Plant sale. So fun!! Just wish there weren't so many spider webs and big spiders everywhere.

This place is absolutely beautiful. I highly recommend it for people of all ages. You can bring your own food, there's places to sit & there's some cute areas for kids to play.

I was quite hesitant to come here to see christmas lights and didn't know what to expect. I can't believe how magical it was to be in this place. I will definitely come back next year. Everything was beautifully displayed. They could have been better with the food options and drinks. Pricey but what do you expect?

A perfect day trip to see plants native to the area as well as plants around the world. This is paved, and most of the areas are easily accessible.

Been coming here for years for different experiences. Formerly known as Quail Gardens. I would meet up with friends or a walk around the property with the kids when they were younger etc. Most recently it's been to attend the #lightscape events. I'm always impressed by it. I try and get a hot drink of sorts to bring along with me while enjoying the sights. Check their web, calendar, and social media for their upcoming events! Going during their regular business hours is a great idea if you're more interested in actually seeing the plants/name/origins better. Great venue to appreciate nature and get some steps in at the same time!

Got a chance to walk around the full Botanical Gardens and it was much bigger than I thought it was! It was incredibly beautiful getting to see all the different areas and flowers. My guy and I went specifically for the World of Orchids event they had and it was a nice showing of orchids, although it was on the smaller side. I got to see a lot of flowers/plants that I've never seen before, so I would say a visit here is definitely worth it!

Enjoyed a festive holiday evening at the Lightscape event at the botanic garden. The trail is well organized to follow a set path that you can't veer off from. In some parts the ground is uneven or steep but there are more accessible options on sidewalks. Each section of the garden had its own theme and a lot were incorporated well into the beautiful plants. Music played throughout the trail although many of the songs were traditional pop songs like Beyoncé or Taylor Swift. I wish there had been more festive soundtracks alongside the walk. We got hot chocolate and cider at one of the beverage carts. Overall I highly recommend visiting the botanic garden for the light scape or during the day to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature.

Absolutely stunning. The San Diego Botanic Garden is more than just a garden. I have been wanting to come visit for over 10 years and I finally have. It's a peaceful, thoughtfully curated escape that surprised us in the best way. My mom and I were able to enter for free with her EBT card (they allow up to four guests), which made this outing not only special but genuinely accessible. I try to take my mom on little adventures when I can. She's older and disabled, and this visit felt like such a gift. The staff were incredibly kind, and one of the best touches was the complimentary golf cart service that helps transport guests up the hill. That thoughtful detail made it possible for my mom to enjoy the whole garden comfortably. You can tell the layout was intentionally and beautifully designed. Each zone flows into the next with a calm rhythm, whether you're passing through dense tropical palms, serene bamboo groves, or vibrant succulent displays. It's clear a lot of care went into how the garden was structured--not just for beauty, but to make it easy and enjoyable to explore. We saw so many rare and unique plants, and the entire space felt clean, peaceful, and well maintained. Even with other visitors around, it never felt crowded or overwhelming. Just calm and immersive. One thing I wish had been communicated better: the golf cart transportation stops running before closing time, which we didn't know. My mom had to walk a long way back, and that was tough on her physically. It would really help to have clear signage or a heads-up from staff for guests with mobility challenges. Even with that, we had a great time and built memories we'll hold onto. We left feeling connected, refreshed, and genuinely grateful.

I've been going to the lightscape show at the botanical garden for 4 years and each is year special. The curators keep it fresh by adding and subtracting installations each year. Half our fun is seeing the creativity by artists to utilize the space. Three plants alone are beautiful, but the music and lighting is a Christmas tradition. Love it and I'll keep going.

Ask the Community - San Diego Botanic Garden

    Are there mosquitoes?

No mosquitoes in May 2025 when I was there.

    Are dogs allowed?

No they are not as far as I know!

Do I really need to buy tickets ahead of time?

If you are going for the evening lights, yes. During normal operating hours probably not.

    Is parking free?

Yes, parking is "free" -- included in admission fee.

Do you have a restaurant at the gardens and what do they serve? Shady tables to eat?

There is no restaurant at the Garden. You can bring food and non-alcoholic beverages with you for general visits in all areas except the indoor Dickinson Family Education Conservatory.

What is the policy on photo shoots that are done for fun or as a hobby? If we have someone take our pictures but the person is not considered a professional photographer?

You can see our Photo / Video / Film Fee policy at https://www.sdbgarden.org/fees.htm. A permit is required for any photo / video / film shoots in which the intended use of the image(s) is portrait, commercial, professional, promotional,…

Is there picnic tables or somewhere I can set up a picnic for my family within the vicinity?

Are dogs allowed? I saw a small dog in a photo.

Only service animals, as defined by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), are permitted in the Garden.

    Is the road stroller friendly?

Yes, most of the four miles of paths are paved and stroller friendly, although there are some steep hills.

What is the current facial mask policy as of 6/15/2021?

Please see the guidelines posted here: https://sdbgarden.org/visitor-guidelines.htm

We have young kids, can you bring snacks and drinks with you, or do you have to purchase all refreshments in the park? Any limits on bags or backpacks.

Yes, you are welcome to bring snacks and drinks for the kids. We don't have limits on bags or backpacks, but keep in mind that our grounds include a number of hills, so lighter is better.

I’m not local and don’t have a lot of time in the area. How much time should I spend here to do it justice? I belong to another garden that has reciprocal relation with this one so I don’t need to pay for admission.

We recommend a minimum of 90 minutes to see everything in our 37 acres. We honor all memberships from other gardens participating in the American Horticultural Society's Reciprocal Admissions Program…

I'm looking to go to the lights festival they have here. I plan to go on a peak evening so it will be $25. Is this worth it?

I hate to say this because I love the gardens but I was so underwhelmed by this event. The horse ride was less than five minutes and they didn't have a super impressive display. If you have young kids the activities may be fun but if it's just…

    Are dogs allowed?

    Only service animals.

While it would have comfortably accommodated a smaller wedding, a party of 150 seemed likely to feel cramped. My communication with Kendra through The Knot was efficient and responsive, and Christian did an excellent job touring us through the venue and preparing our final quote. =PROS= *Ceremony site centered around a charming gazebo, complemented by natural elements such as a towering tree, flower pots, and a picturesque hanging swing *Included feature wall perfect for signage, backdrops, or neon displays *Reception space featured high ceilings and an elegant, neutral aesthetic *Packages included tables, linens, and glassware, with upgrade options available for different styles and colors *Large inventory of complimentary decor, including signage, draping, and string lights *DJ and coordination services included *Complimentary engagement photo session and discounted wedding photography *Affordable in house catering with flexibility for outside vendors *BYO bar option available *Free photobooth included *Discount offered for cash or check payments =CONS= *Parking area was somewhat hilly and may be challenging for elderly guests *Bridal and groom suites were small and noticeably dated, with furniture showing significant wear *Bathrooms, particularly the men's, felt informal and somewhat resembled those found in elementary schools *Some of the greenery appeared wilted and lacked the lushness shown in promotional materials This would have been an excellent choice for a wedding closer to 100 guests, but it felt like a squeeze for our anticipated attendance. Ironically, the venue's strongest selling points were not the garden itself, but rather the extensive planning support and complimentary services included in the package. The greenery was pleasant but not especially striking, so couples may want to allocate additional budget toward florals and decor to elevate the space.

From the moment we started planning, Shannon (our wedding planner) was nothing short of exceptional. I had such a terrible experience at another venue and when we made the decision to change venues to Secret Garden, she metaphorically took my hand and turned planning into the BEST and MOST magical experience. She made what is usually (and had been) a stressful process feel effortless, organized, and honestly... SO much fun! She's upbeat, enthusiastic and clearly LOVES what she does, which makes everything feel exciting. She anticipated needs before we even knew we had them, handled every detail with precision, and made us feel completely taken care of the entire time. Not only that, she made us feel special, seen, heard and adored. Her magical energy made the whole process feel like we were planning our wedding with people who cared for us like family! And, every visit to secret garden -before, during our ceremony, and after to pick up decorations - she greeted us like we were family! We felt so welcome and so special. On the day of, Cheryl (our wedding coordinator) brought everything to life seamlessly. She was calm, kind, incredibly on top of everything, and made sure every moment flowed beautifully. She even put bandaids on my bleeding feet and helped sew my ripped dress. I never once felt stressed or pulled in a million directions--she held the entire day with such grace and professionalism, which allowed us to actually be present and soak in every second. And, the whole time it felt like she was going above and beyond to make sure we loved our day. And the vendors... WOW. Every single one exceeded expectations! The DJ Harry O was AMAZING! He even captured photos for us and sent them to us after the wedding. He was such a delight. The efficient made sure paper work was taken care of effortlessly. But, my favorite detail of all were the decorations and the flowers! Vanessa and her family who have been doing flowers for generations are AMAZING! They were beyond stunning--elevated, romantic, and even more beautiful than I could have imagined. The arrangements felt like they were pulled straight out of a dream and completely transformed the space. She went so far above and beyond to make my vision come to life. Truly unforgettable. This is a family owned business and it feels that way from start to finish! What stood out most is how above and beyond everyone went. This wasn't just a "service"--it felt like a team of magical people who genuinely cared about making our wedding perfect. Every detail, every interaction, every moment felt thoughtful and intentional. If you're considering getting married here--do it. This team delivers not just a wedding, but an experience that feels magical, seamless, and deeply personal. We'll be reliving this day forever

One side of the flower fields were much more bloomed than the other side. I'm pretty glad we took pics at the more bloomed side. Great one of a kind experience!!! Extra activities to do include a tractor ride (looks like it's treated like a train station where you get dropped off in certain areas of the fields) and I saw a butterfly exhibit but you have to pay extra for and line up at. Saw a mariachi band playing here so it's nice they're really keeping up on keeping this spot active!!! They also do private booking events etc if you're interested.

Pretty annoyed I got a plant from here and walking back to my car it had aphids. I thought…read moremealybugs at first but the guy corrected me and said they live only 2 days. That's a lie. They reproduce quickly And the life span is a month. I have a greenhouse and 50 plants in my house. I asked for a refund and he said no and just sprayed the plant down with I'm assuming is neem oil. But now I have to separate this plant leave it outside, hose it down kill the bugs and constantly repeat it till they're all gone. To be honest, I just wanted my $43 stock and I can get this plant somewhere else.. I 100% will never recommend this place to anyone

I have completely fallen in love with this gem of a nursery in Encinitas. I have been searching for…read morerare plants all over North County and have found that this has the best selection and best value for rare houe plants. This whole rack of plants came from Cordova, and not a single one can be found at any other nursery for these affordable prices (think 25%-50% of the price you'd find online). I have found several White Princess and Pink Princess Philodendron that have made exquisite gifts for the holidays. The most amazing Philodendron I found was the Jose Bueno, its leaves are easily at least 18" and I snagged it for 1/3 the online price! I have also found Swiss Cheese Monstera, as well as Thai Constellation and Albo varieties. My other amazing find has been their String of Turtles and String of Hearts, which are very rare as compared to the more typical string of pearls. The owner shared with me that he's been in business for over 38 years! He is super knowledgeable and has a vast inventory (hence the competitive pricing). The plants are all super healthy, and I've not had a single pest interloper from their collection. I have never left this nursery without finding what I was looking for. So if you're looking for presents this season (prepare to wow all of your friends and family while not breaking the bank) or want to expand on your rare house plant collection, this is your spot. Go before I buy all their plants.
