This was our first visit and I highly recommend coming!! We spent the day here because I was the instagram winner of two passes and a plant!! Upon arrival we were greeted, given a succulent and tickets. The Dickinson Family atrium is a fabulous space with hanging plants and so many examples of indoor/rainforest plants. We walked the entire grounds!! My fitness tracker said it took me two hours to walk two miles- I kept stopping to take pictures and read the plant placards. We walked around though many different gardens. From the rainforest of Africa and past the waterfall to the desert area with native plants. There was an example of a Native American village complete with hut and grinding stone. We hiked up to the look out point where you can see the Pacific Ocean. There is a children's garden, playhouse, and a sandbox with toys. There are walking trails through out and many benches. I highly recommend bringing water, a hat, sunscreen and snacks. There is a small gift shop with a small selection of snacks. They have a large selection of plants to purchase!! read more

Had very unpleasant attempt to visit botanical gardens. We brought our service dog with us and had all the documents to prove it. The women at the front desk kept asking millions questions and expressing unreasonably doubts. Ny kids and I felt like being on lie detector.Very humiliating feeling. After finally being admitted, we left shortly. Our experience were ruined.It was no place for enjoyment. Very bitter,sad feeling... I didn't know people can be so mean at botanical gardens. I had the opportunity to experience the botanical garden both as a general visitor and as a prospective wedding venue. It was one of the most beautiful venues we toured, though there were some limitations regarding event spaces and accessibility. There were two primary areas capable of accommodating our guest count of 150: the Lawn Garden and the Dickinson Family Education Conservatory. I preferred the ceremony setup at the Conservatory, while the Lawn Garden offered a more appealing space for cocktail hour. However, the Lawn Garden is entirely outdoors, so couples should have a weather contingency plan. The amphitheater adjacent to the Conservatory felt relatively plain and undersized compared to the lush surroundings. Both venues were conveniently located near parking lots and restrooms, though the restrooms themselves resembled standard public facilities. The garden grounds were expansive and quite hilly. The Lawn Garden parking area required navigating a significant incline that could be difficult for some guests. While a shuttle service exists, we were informed it is volunteer operated and unavailable for private events. Venue rentals included ceremony chairs and cocktail hour belly bar tables. Most other services and rentals must be booked through approved vendors. During our tour, we explored many of the garden's attractions and found it to be highly family friendly, though less accommodating for elderly guests or those with mobility concerns. Children would love the children's garden, streams, and treehouse areas. Meanwhile, sections such as the Rainforest Garden and New Zealand Garden featured steep pathways that may be challenging to navigate. My favorite areas were the Walled Garden and the dancing topiaries, where flowers were sculpted into whimsical musicians and dancers. We also attended the Orchid Showcase inside the Conservatory, which featured an impressive collection of orchids. The volunteers were exceptionally knowledgeable and eager to share information beyond what was available on the website, adding a great deal to the experience. The gift shop was an underrated highlight. I picked up a pressed flower magnet where each one featured a unique arrangement. Ultimately, the venue felt a bit too small for our wedding, but it remained one of our top contenders. For couples who value greenery and natural beauty, this would be an incredible choice for a smaller guest count. Just be aware that much of the planning, design, and personalization will fall on the couple. read more

Another holiday visit to SDBG for their annual Lightscape nights. What a great display and light show. Purchased tickets online for discounted price and paid for parking as well. We visited on special night for patrons 21 and above. It was easy to find parking and there some decent drink and food offerings from the vendors including some cocktails. This is definitely a must do if you're in North County and enjoy nature. Come in after dusk to really appreciate the visual effects. read more

San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, north of San Diego featured the Corpse plant aka voodoo plant in exhibition during its blooming period and I had to see. Plenty of parking and it's Gratis! It took a couple of trips because at first it was just a bud. Our second trip, a couple of petals had opened, showing the hues of purple and the air did smell unpleasant but not as bad. This plant's origin is from Sumatra. The botanical garden here had cared for it, pollinated it, from its growth for seven years until it bloomed. The bloom lasts only 48 hours before it's wilts and dies. There's more in depth info about this voodoo plant on boards which I posted here with my review. The Botanical Garden is expansive and there's a 4 mile walking path with signs to help guide you. Various countries and the plants are featured, many quite exotic. My pup and I started the walk but were only able to do over half the distance due to the intolerable heatwave and we were unprepared; we didn't bring H20, appropriate clothing and walking shoes. I commend my pup for being so curious and exploratory. She had the energy and excitement to continue but I was concerned of heat exhaustion, which is inevitable. Despite our condense walking expedition, we did get to see lots this garden had to offer. We only intended to visit the corpse plant in bloom but ended up seeing, exploring and experiencing more. We loved it! It took us about 2 hours to walk the grounds. I had read some negative reviews before we went, so I was a little worried, but we really enjoyed it. Many signs were faded or missing, but like another poster said, we could do a quick Google image search to find out names of things we were really interested in. I always enjoy the Botanic Gardens but 2024 is the first time I attended the Lightscape festival. It was so worth the time and the trip and the parking! I took my Mom who I learned my gawking skills from and we had an excellent time walking and gawking at all of the amazingly designed lighting exhibits. It is very dark in the area say take time to slow down and watch for the entrance and parking signs and people. There were quite a few parking attendants around to point people toward spots and away from full lots. We went the day after Thanksgiving and it was full but it didn't take us long to find a parking spot. There were signs and the attendants also pointed everyone in the direction to the entrance. At the front, security checked bags and scanned tickets and ushered people into the park. Guides at the front suggested a route which included following the arrows lighted along the routes through the garden. It was so gorgeous! People were quite respectful of others trying to get photos of displays and couple and group photos. At one location I became the honorary photographer after helping out a few people. We walked around and posed and all for over three hours. It was a well spent wholesome family evening. You're killing it, SD Botanic Garden! read more

Been coming here for years for different experiences. Formerly known as Quail Gardens. I would meet up with friends or a walk around the property with the kids when they were younger etc. Most recently it's been to attend the #lightscape events. I'm always impressed by it. I try and get a hot drink of sorts to bring along with me while enjoying the sights. Check their web, calendar, and social media for their upcoming events! Going during their regular business hours is a great idea if you're more interested in actually seeing the plants/name/origins better. Got a chance to walk around the full Botanical Gardens and it was much bigger than I thought it was! It was incredibly beautiful getting to see all the different areas and flowers. My guy and I went specifically for the World of Orchids event they had and it was a nice showing of orchids, although it was on the smaller side. Another fun weekend activity with our son during our San Diego visit! The San Diego Botanical Garden may be small, but it's packed with plants from all over the world. We especially enjoyed the South African section -- very unique species you don't see every day -- and the fun "plant mariachi band" in the Mexican garden made us smile. They even had a magic show for the kids, which was a nice surprise. For those who love gardening, there are plants available for sale too. The bamboo garden was another highlight -- really interesting to see how different types of bamboo grow. Overall, a cool and relaxing visit surrounded by nature. read more

Enjoyed a festive holiday evening at the Lightscape event at the botanic garden. The trail is well organized to follow a set path that you can't veer off from. In some parts the ground is uneven or steep but there are more accessible options on sidewalks. Each section of the garden had its own theme and a lot were incorporated well into the beautiful plants. Music played throughout the trail although many of the songs were traditional pop songs like Beyoncé or Taylor Swift. I wish there had been more festive soundtracks alongside the walk. We got hot chocolate and cider at one of the beverage carts. Overall I highly recommend visiting the botanic garden for the light scape or during the day to enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. read more

Absolutely stunning. The San Diego Botanic Garden is more than just a garden. I have been wanting to come visit for over 10 years and I finally have. It's a peaceful, thoughtfully curated escape that surprised us in the best way. My mom and I were able to enter for free with her EBT card (they allow up to four guests), which made this outing not only special but genuinely accessible. I try to take my mom on little adventures when I can. She's older and disabled, and this visit felt like such a gift. The staff were incredibly kind, and one of the best touches was the complimentary golf cart service that helps transport guests up the hill. That thoughtful detail made it possible for my mom to enjoy the whole garden comfortably. You can tell the layout was intentionally and beautifully designed. Each zone flows into the next with a calm rhythm, whether you're passing through dense tropical palms, serene bamboo groves, or vibrant succulent displays. It's clear a lot of care went into how the garden was structured--not just for beauty, but to make it easy and enjoyable to explore. We saw so many rare and unique plants, and the entire space felt clean, peaceful, and well maintained. Even with other visitors around, it never felt crowded or overwhelming. Just calm and immersive. One thing I wish had been communicated better: the golf cart transportation stops running before closing time, which we didn't know. My mom had to walk a long way back, and that was tough on her physically. It would really help to have clear signage or a heads-up from staff for guests with mobility challenges. I've been going to the lightscape show at the botanical garden for 4 years and each is year special. The curators keep it fresh by adding and subtracting installations each year. We have been to this botanical garden a couple of times. Once with visiting friends from out of town, and all four of us loved wandering through the very well manicured pathways with a wide variety of plants to see. The grounds are just beautiful. Recently we attended the Lightscape event and even our five month old granddaughter enjoyed all the light displays. This was super well organized and timed entry made it not too crowded. It's been years since I've been here! The first time I was here was around Christmas time for the lights and bribing our then 2 week old son to meet Santa!! Today I went with my wife to see the whole garden and it was phenomenal! We are bringing our son back this year for the Christmas event. But today, we enjoyed walking around the whole place viewing all the plants. We were hoping to catch the corpse flower in bloom today but we didn't but it should be blooming any day now!! This garden is truly magical with tons of unique exotic plants, flowers, trees, waterfalls, a tree house, and much more. Very peaceful making you feel at zen. I've been wanting to visit for a while and finally took the time to go. The garden was bigger than expected. My kids and I only walked for an hour and didn't get the chance to explore it all. Planning to go back so we can make it a few hours to adventure out within the whole garden next time. Make sure you have on some good tennis shoes to walk around in. You are allowed to bring in food and drinks to enjoy in picnic areas. They have a small cafe on site to purchase snacks, drinks, and coffee. Parking is free and close to the entrance. I loved visiting the San Diego Botanic Garden. The plumeria trees were gorgeous, and there were lots of unique plants everywhere. I especially loved seeing the succulents, pitcher plants, and the bamboo garden was impressive. They had incredibly beautiful water lilies and banana trees. Admission was less than $20 per person. We love to visit botanic gardens across the country, and this one is one of the finest we've been to. The parking lot is right next to the entrance, so the floral experience starts the 2nd you exit your vehicle. The admission staff was helpful in getting us on our way, and the ticket pricing is quite reasonable - they also have annual memberships, but we were on vacation. There are lots of plants of flowers for those who love botanic gardens, and there's a children's area for those who may just love to play in a beautiful setting. One area to be aware of is the amount of walking that you'll do within this botanic garden - this is a large garden and there's a lot of elevation involved. If you don't feel comfortable walking a lot, this botanic garden may not be your first choice. We love the exercise however, so this was an excellent place for us to visit. There's also not a lot of natural shade, so if it's an especially hot and sunny day, you should plan accordingly. Overall, I'd highly recommend this activity, as well as other opportunities to see foliage in the Encinitas and Carlsbad areas. read more

It was a big no for me. The experience wasn't enjoyable. It's mostly uphill and the "attractions" were nothing special, honestly less impressive than walking a decorated street with Christmas lights. There were zero rain accommodations even though they operate rain or shine. It's extremely overpriced for what you actually get. Too many points of friction when you're just trying to have a good time with friends and family. Also, it becomes slightly dangerous in the rain. I was deeply upset and disappointed to learn that the San Diego Botanic Garden is not pet-friendly. This is marketed as a family-oriented place, and for many people, pets *are* family. My pet is a sphynx cat who is extremely well-behaved, friendly, and fully potty trained. He never walks on the ground outdoors. When we are outside, he is either on my shoulder, in my arms, or safely secured inside his carrier with his blanket and familiar scent. He loves people and enjoys gentle attention from admirers. Unfortunately, I was approached by an employee and told he was not welcome. The interaction left me feeling embarrassed and hurt. I completely understand the importance of preserving gardens and respecting rules, but I do wish there was more consideration for responsibly handled companion animals in contained carriers, especially when they pose no threat to the environment or guests. For a place centered around nature, peace, and families, I hoped there would be a more compassionate and inclusive approach. read more

I am fond of Botanic garden wherever the city we are visiting. It was a challenge to find a parking spot. We had to go around several times until we got one. The garden has numerous unique themed gardens. We had free admission since my family has American Horticultural Society AHS membership. There was Orchid show but with separate admission fees. We stopped at their gift shop too, to get some souvenirs. It looks cool and they have nice merchandise and plants for sale.
