Such a beautiful and amazing place. I am usually here for drinking events, like Meading in the Garden. The paths for walking through the grounds are well kept, it's so nice to look at the garden views and different kinds of plants and trails. There is also a children's area to play in. The further you explore, you will find wildlife, dinosaur statues, sculptures and more. It's a great place to visit if you want to take a break and enjoy nature. This is such a beautiful and inexpensive botanical garden! They're open daily - Mon to Sat - 8am-4:30pm - Sun - 10am-4:30pm Parking is free and easy since they have their own parking lot but it's quite small. Admission is only $5! What a deal! Staff was very friendly, welcoming, and helpful! Inside is so beautiful with plenty of art sculptures and gardens! Perfect to spend the day with family or have a lovely picnic date or just time alone! There are lots of beautiful plants, trees, flowers, etc. my favorite was the pond with the adorable turtles! Be sure to check out the small gift shop because they sell little packs of turtle food to feed the turtles! I got the pack for $1.00 and it was so much fun feeding the turtles! Alta Vista Botanical Gardens is one of those places I almost don't want to review because I selfishly want to keep it my little hidden gem, but it's too good not to share. Tucked away in Vista, this place is such a peaceful, beautiful escape. It's perfect for a walk with your dog, a family outing, or just some quiet time to reset and wander. There's something really grounding about it, like you can just breathe a little deeper while you're there. It's also incredibly affordable. I think it's around $5 to visit, and the annual pass is something like $60 which is honestly such a great deal if you go even a handful of times. Every time I go, I leave feeling better than when I arrived. It's simple, natural, and just a really special space that doesn't feel overly crowded or commercialized. So yes, I highly recommend it. But also please don't all go at once because I'd like to keep pretending it's my secret spot. read more

This lovely botanical gardens is tucked away in the middle of Brengle Terrace, Park. It's easy to miss. This is a great place to take a stroll with your partner or your kids! The paths gently slope up and down the property. There is plenty to see and many beautiful plants along the way. They enhance each area with artwork as well. There are interactive play areas for the kids. Pack a lunch and have a picnic at one of the many seating areas that include picnic tables and benches. Take a break under a vine covered gazebo with a view. Bonus: admission is only five dollars. Parking is free and located near the entrance of the gardens. read more

Such a lovely secret garden! Tucked into Brengle Park in Vista the place is just magical! Having visited before I know it's completely run by volunteers, the land was donated by the town of Vista.The park is divided into sections that gently flow into each other. There is the children's area, jungle area, Australian area, prehistoric, Labyrith area. Also some quirky statues around the park. There are places to sit and meditate and a gazebo with a picnic area. It's Holly with some paved walkways. There is a gift shop but I have not seen it open. The signage pointing out the plants is helpful and there is trivia in the children's area. You can spend and hour or more here at this lovely park. read more

3.5 stars. A TRANQUIL GET AWAY We visited the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens on Mother's Day 2025 for about an hour and a half. It's a nice place to stroll and get away from the hustle and bustle and see some of what Mother Nature has to offer. (Although you can still hear some nearby traffic). There were only a few other parties of visitors on the day we went. After living in San Diego for almost 40 years, it was a new place to visit for both of us. ENTRY FEE FOR NON-MEMBERS The man on the pay station desk was very welcoming, jolly and enthusiastic. He gave us a map and explained a few of the 'must sees'. Entry is $5 for non-members and includes parking. After a certain hour, the attendant is no longer there and payment is on the honor system by cash or QR code electronic payment. GARDENS WITHIN THE GARDEN The garden is a little rough and tumble, but offers different areas including a zen garden, children's garden, an herb garden, a few ponds and a variety of shrubs, trees, flowers and cacti. Do not expect a highly groomed, manicured garden! It has several picnic areas, including a couple of covered gazebos, picnic benches and table and chairs. There are several dinosaur art features, not unlike those you see in Borrego Springs. I would have liked to have seen more informational boards about the trees, flowers and shrubs that I was looking at. COME PREPARED TO WALK IN THE SUN Be prepared to wear good shoes as not all paths are paved. Also, it's a good idea to wear a hat or bring a parasol to protect yourself from the sun. There is shade in some places. EVENT VENUE The gardens offer wedding and event facilities. Check their web site for details. EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP There's a small volunteer-run garden gift shop, but it was closed by the time we got to it around 4:20pm. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY According to their web site, the gardens are always looking for volunteers. WHEN IN VISTA... The Botanical Gardens are located at Brengle Terrace Park near the Moonlight Amphitheater, so if you're in the area, drop by and take a stroll through. I recommend 1-2 hours for your visit. Can't believe I have not been here before...glad I finally made it...the gardens were beautiful, the trails were well maintained, I loved all of the sculptures interspersed throughout the grounds...lots of nooks to sit and relax or enjoy a snack or picnic . An amazing, diverse, 16 acres to enjoy and only a $5 entry fee and conveniently located in the Brengle terrace park. There is parking right outside the gate / entrance where you pay, and also inside the gate, and some extra parking a little closer to the gift shop. There are sculptures from Ricardo Breceda (most of his are out in Borrego), a wide variety of trees, flowers, plants, they also have small waterfall streams, ponds, turtles, a labyrinth, on obelisk, and upper garden, and a lower garden, and even more. I saw a roadrunner running around the other day on my second visit. I have been to Brengle Terrace park numerous times but did not even realize that this place was tucked away inside. Definitely a hidden gem and something to do in Vista. Well worth it. They also have annual memberships and senior discounts. read more

We came by here last weekend while visiting the San Marcos area. The kids got to enjoy a nice hike through the gardens, we got to see metal dinosaurs, a koi pond with turtles and a catfish, and scarecrows, other people sculptures, waterfall, rock garden and more! Restroom in the middle of the garden is super clean and beats the porta potty by the entrance. We spent a good 1-1.5 hours here, lots to see and fun for kids. read more

This place is amazing! I thought it was going to be small but WOW, it's huge! They even give you a map! $5 admission, definitely worth it. There is so much to look at here, definitely the most unique garden I've been too. Everything from dinosaurs to Alice and wonderland to scarecrows, you will be surprised at everything you find here. It's a bit of a hike so I'd recommend close toe shoes, there's tons of activities and things to play on as well. You can easily spend hours here, go ahead and bring a lunch and find a spot. Omg. What a gem!!! This place is amazing!! $5 for adults and kids under 3 years of age are free. Plenty of parking spaces, its located inside a park so you can park just outside the garden too. They have a cafe, tables and chairs toward the back with a view! We will definitely try going back just for this alone. Anyways, they have some porta potty throughout in case nature calls. Lol but the path and walkways are clean and great for a stroll. My 2 year old enjoyed this whole experience. There's a dedicated garden for children right when you enter and it is amazing! It's very interactive and fun for both kids and parents! The gardens are all sectioned by the plant type but if you follow the pathways, they all interconnect. Accessibility: there are disabled parking spots actually inside this park (see photos). Besides this, there are tons of other, non-disabled parking spots directly inside the entrance of the park, and right outside the park. Most of the park is on hilly, dirt ground, not great for wheelchairs or anyone who has a difficult time walking. Experience: I paid five dollars per person to enter (I wish it was per car but I guess that's how they keep the park running). I came on a Sunday and there were other people there but not that many. I actually never crossed by anyone closely on any trails. It is definitely a beautiful park with great views of Vista, but I recommend coming later in the day, maybe two hours before sunset, so there is more shade from the trees. During the middle of the day it gets super hot and there isn't as much shade when the sun is directly overhead. There are drinking fountains with water in a few places around the park which is super cool, and they have bathrooms (porta potties) and trash and recycle bins all over. Hey! How did I not know about this place before? I had my eye on it for a while, and we finally made a trip out here last weekend. Tickets are very reasonable ($5 for adults, $3 for children 3 and up), and the grounds are beautiful. There are several scenic spots, a couple of ponds, and a handful of fun dinosaur sculptures for the kids. There's an entire children's garden with outdoor musical instruments, balance beams, a small bridge, and other entertaining garden elements for the kiddos. Our daughter ended up spending a lot of time here, so after almost two hours, we weren't even able to cover all of the grounds. There are multiple benches, tables, and/or picnic areas, which would be perfect for a packed lunch. This place has great vibes, and is a relaxing way to hang out outdoors. We ended up buying a membership. They have a couple of rock painting events (twice a month) and monthly nature classes for kids as well, which might be interesting. E.g. a composting class. We haven't tried them yet but they are included in the membership, so looking forward to it! read more

This place was so perfect for the kiddos! My toddler really liked the interactive sections. The giant drums and chimes and marimba were his favorite. The pebble chime was also a hit. It's right in front by the parking lot so you don't have to walk far. The giant tunnel was awesome too! Some of the stuff was set up on hilly areas and there was a bit of a safety concern when the kids got close to the edge so parent must stay close. The gardens are pretty big, but the staffing is minimal. The place was low key and not crowded. I was bummed they didn't take my horticultural society membership and you'd need to buy a separate one. It's $60 for the family so it's not super high but I was a little bummed. That said it was a nice afternoon and it's only $5 to visit one time which is a steal. There are many gardens and it really aimed towards kids. If you have little ones this is a great affordable family outing. I will likely get a membership and return since I live so close. read more

Went to their fall festival, admission $5 was free that day. They had a plant sale with large staghorn ferns at great prices. Scarecrow contest was fun and there were activities and crafts for the kids. They even had caramel apples and that were so good. This is really a hidden gem! If you're itching to get outside, stroll through beautiful gardens, look at interesting sculptures, don't hesitate to check this place out! When my partner in crime and I arrived with my two kiddos in tow, there was a friendly volunteer waiting at the entrance. Admission is tax deductible since Alta Vista Botanical Gardens is a 501 (not for profit). So, save your receipt! hahaha There are so many areas to the garden. You'll want to use the map so you see them all. My kids loved the music area! Speaking of kids, they offer kids classes there on Saturdays. They also offer yoga classes once a week there. I never knew about this place until a friend suggested it. A great place to be on a lovely day. They had lots a different trails you could explore and the scenery was amazing. They had an herb garden, a relaxing pond with cute little turtles and so much more. They also offered outside yoga which sounded fun. I was impressed by how large it actually was... I just thought it had a few trails but after talking with others and checking out some myself you definitely could spend the whole day there. I will definitely be back. read more

We started the garden walk in the children's area first as we had our grandchild with us. It was a fun educational walk going thru the different sensory areas, one had musical instruments, butterfly hut, garden art of a dragon and succulent garden with an old fashioned water pump that our grandchild enjoyed. We saw the array of picnic tables and finally chose the cleanest one of all from the area to have a snack and enjoy the scenery. No more than just a few minutes came a lady marching thru the area and commented "He's not wearing a yellow shirt", "Are you part of the tour?" We answered No. She told us that this was her table for setting up and we needed to move. My wife was more gentle and said we were just finishing up our snack and would move to the other areas to visit. She started to place paper plates with dirt and worms on the table as were were still sitting. She further went on to question us whether we paid our fee. We again answered yes. She said she was Farmer Joan and she was a board member. I replied, I figured that. This lady was pushy, rude and authoritative. The fee or donation- I'm not sure what it is, is an metal box at the entrance. It's on the honor system. For a board member to interject her authority is not a good look for the Garden. If you need a gate keeper to charge entrance fees, you found your person in Farmer Joan. As we left we overheard her talk with another lady and ask the same question about paying the fee. Btw, the table we used did not have a "Reserved" notice on it. How were we supposed to know out of all the tables covered in leaves and spiders webs that was "Her" table? What an uncomfortable conversation especially coming from a board member. We continued our walk and departed. I took a stem of Mint to replant in my garden in spite of Farmer Joan.
