I came to SD with my boyfriend for his birthday and wanted to learn about some of the spooky history of the place; our tour guide had so much to tell us and I had a fun time walking around and checking out different haunted places around the gas lamp district. I recommend you check it out!

It's a must stop if you're in San Diego and it's worth a visit too, even if you're not planning on paying for any of the tours or the tourist spots. Lots of historical architecture, including authentic adobe buildings, statues, signs, and themed shops and such. Each time I've gone here it's been lively, especially so during the holiday season with the decor and the live music playing in the main central square. Lots of photo opportunities and shops and such to peruse and look around. Easy to grab souvenirs here as well and depending on what you're looking for, there may be more than one shop offering it (cultural souvenirs and pieces). Great to shop for outdoor garden decor (little statues and wind chimes) too. There's also toy stores, a hot sauce store, a "Chinese" themed store which is quite funny to visit, and lots of spots to grab food too, sit down and dine in or casual take out. I personally like the churro and champurrado place when it's open. There's a couple restrooms here too, but can get crowded and a bit gross with the large volume of people visiting. Free house museums for self tours where you just walk through and read the little signs that they have, and sometimes there's historical actors as well, which is always a treat.

The building were settled to feel like stepping into San Diego at the turn of the 19th century. If you focus on the history of the landscape and the structures themselves, looking beyond the carts filled with modern day tchotchkes and souvenirs, you can definitely appreciate what it must have been like. We were in SD for a game at Petco. I wanted to stay in the Old Town area because I have only ever done day, or once an evening, trips to Fiesta plaza and the restaurants and scores of stores along San Diego Ave, to the east of the OTSDSHP, but never really explored this neighborhood beyond the usual tourist spots. What a treat it was to enjoy this beautiful park at night, long after tourists had departed, and while a few locals remained for a last call, or to close down their stalls and shops for the night. This park takes on a rather special feel, more personal and slightly spookier than I imagined. We felt very safe walking around the grounds at night. Saw a few SDPD patrolling the perimeters, making sure late night bar goers minded their Ps & Qs, as well a a few other couples just strolling around, enjoying the soft lighting and old world charm. Many people and reviews will tell you about the great shops, food and margaritas to be had in Old Town and I fully concur! There's just nothing like a fresh made, hot, buttery flour tortilla and a margarita larger than your head on a warm , sunny day. But, if you can, come check out the area around 9pm and stroll the grounds, reading the various building and history plaques. Crowds have departed and not much, if anything is still open, but the quiet beauty of the park at night is time well spent reflecting on what it must've been like to settle in this beautiful region over 200 years ago. Cheers! "CC"

We've been coming to SD for years, even own a condo in town. Finally decided to take the OTT tour…read more I take them whenever we are visiting a city they're in. It really is a great way to get a lot of information about the city. The trolley is hop on/hop off - which means that they stop so that you can get off the train and go do whatever. It probably stops anywhere you want to go anyway (Balboa Park/Zoo, Coronado, and even the Midway), so you might as well do it on a guided tour! These tours are all professionally done and the drivers are safe and friendly. They've got daytime tours and evening tours - in San Diego, they've got SEAL tours and night time City Lights and Ghosts and Gravestones tours. We did the Holiday Lights tour a couple of years ago (the *only* thing I didn't like about that is that it was a sing-a-long, but that made my sister happy so it made me happy). I highly recommend the Trolley Tours! Thank you for reading my review.

I Had checked prices on line & saw tickets were $49 for 1-day passes. Looked great! However when we arrived in person at the ticket booth on April 9th & wanted to purchase 4 tickets, it was $85 per ticket for 1-day passes! $340 for 4 people I thought I had misread the on-line price. But we hadn't. Prices are NOT consistent. Most dates are $45. Some days were $53. For whatever reason 4/9 was $85. It made zero sense & I felt scammed! It would have been cheaper to drive ourselves & pay for parking & skip sites we had no little interest in. Or, get on the actual red San Diego Trolley & explore that way. Our driving "J" seemed nice, but commentary was a mix of really cheesy jokes & facts. When we got off & re-boarded again hours later, we were a bit bummed to have the same driver again. He seemed a bit..frazzled cause we were running a little late, traffic was building up around 4pm & some kids on the trolley were loud, which required him to talk over them. He frequently stopped & asked us all to lower our voices, even though it was 2 parents 3 unruly kids doing ALL the yapping disrupting the tour. Listening to them made me regret even more we paid $320 for this experience. IF you do this activity check/get tickets on-line so you can actually see the prices that specific day & avoid paying double & feeling ripped off. The overall experience wasnt work $320 & I'll never take visiting guest in this tour again

These are fantastic walking tours of San Diego…read more The fact of the matter is, San Diego DOES have history ... you just have to look for it. And there are few people better than Patty (Ms. Urban Safari herself) to show it to you. Urban Safaris offers guided walking tours of different San Diego neighborhoods, ranging from urban centers like the Gaslamp Quarter and La Jolla to Balboa Park and the open canyons around town. Patty, a long-time San Diego resident, teacher and historian, knows more about the city than anyone I know. And she has a knack for noticing fascinating things that most of us pass every day without even a second's notice. Usually, there's a tour every weekend, leaving on Saturday at 10am and lasting about two hours. The specific location depends upon the neighborhood of the week, but you can find out by making a reservation with Patty on the website, by sending her an email, or even by calling the number. Space is usually limited to about 15, so it's good to make your reservations early. On the other hand, San Diegans are notorious un-curious about their city, and so the tours often (and unfortunately) have plenty of space. The best way to find out about the tours is through the website, although they are occasionally advertised in the San Diego Reader (under 'Local Events') and Patty can give you a paper schedule when you go on your first tour. They don't happen every weekend (because Patty travels and spends a lot of her time researching new tours); but there are 'seasons', and when a new schedule comes out it will usually list tours for weeks and even months in advance. Really, I can't say enough about these tours. I've learned a ton. Most of all, I've found a great, new way to appreciate the wonderful city we share. PS - The tours don't necessarily leave from Horton Plaza. I just put that there because Yelp required that I put a specific location. Really, this isn't the kind of thing that has a specific location -- it changes each week with the particular tour. Just go to the website to find out where the next tour is leaving from.

Think you know San Diego?…read more If you don't, definitely come on one of these walking tours. And even if you think you do, still come, because there may be a thing or three that you may very well learn and give you a greater appreciation for the community. Like Ethan said, these tours take you to various neighborhoods in San Diego: North Park, Hillcrest, Gaslamp, South Park, East Village, Mission Hills, etc. Each last between 1.5-2 hours. Along the way, Patty points you to various landmarks and oddities in each neighborhood and provides the history and background of each. In addition, she also shows some historical pictures in context to today's landscape. In addition to researching herself, many people have donated their knowledge and information that have gone on the walks themselves, adding even more rich history from people who actually have grown up and seen the changes in San Diego. The Whaley House is a historic house and museum located in Old Town, San Diego, California. It is…read morethe oldest brick structure in Southern California, built in 1857. The Whaley House was a central pillar amongst the Old Town San Diego community. From 1857 to the early part of the 20th century, the Whaley House became the gathering place for the entire San Diego community. Besides being the Whaley family home, it was also San Diego's first commercial theater, the second county courthouse, and a bilingual general store. The Whaley House primarily served as the residential home for Thomas Whaley and his family. Thomas Whaley arrived in San Francisco around 1849, during the famous California Gold Rush. He then went to San Diego in September 1851. Two years later, Whaley went back to New York and married Anna Eloise Delaunay on August 14, 1853. Together they returned to California, arriving in San Diego on December 7, 1853. On August 22, 1857, the Whaleys moved into their new home, now known as the Whaley House. While the Whaley House might seem perfectly normal, it also has a dark side. The house and property were the sites of multiple violent and bizarre deaths, hangings, and even suicide. As a result, it's widely believed that various members of the Whaley family and others haunt the home where they endured so much sorrow! Now as a museum, the Whaley House fully embraces its haunted past and allows it to live alongside the building's historical significance. Guests can partake in self-guided tours during the day and guided tours in the evening. We visited this historic house on Black Friday in 2025 during our trip to San Diego. We had a great time visiting the Whaley House. The staff were very friendly, cooperative, and knowledgeable about the history, incidents, tragedies, and folklore of this house. For those seeking a more immersive experience, Whaley House offers an After-Hours Paranormal Investigation. These small group investigations begin at 10:30 PM. Guests can use a variety of paranormal investigating tools, including EMF readers, thermal cameras, spirit boxes, and dowsing rods.

I had been telling my daughter about this haunted house for a couple of weeks leading up to our visit, and she was so excited--it was basically all she talked about. We even watched some YouTube videos beforehand. I definitely leaned into the spooky factor, mostly because I remember coming here in sixth grade and wanted my kids to enjoy it the same way I did. Our guide was dressed in period clothing and gave us a brief overview with some interesting facts before letting us explore on our own. The house isn't very large, but it's well laid out, full of history, and there are plenty of rooms and details to check out. Even without anything over-the-top scary, it was still a fun and engaging experience--especially for kids who love a good ghost story.
