I did the 7pm San Diego Ghost Tour with my sister and her husband visiting from Arizona. We all loved our experience! Our intrepid guide was "Cowboy Pete" who kept us all entertained and well informed with good natured humor. Our driver was Miguel who did a great job of transporting us to various historic spots reputed to be haunted. The highlight of the tour took place in the music room at the Villa Montezuma Museum, an incredibly well restored Victorian mansion built in 1887 by the celebrated musician and spiritualist, Jesse Shepard. Here we were treated to great stories by the very capable docent named Louise. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in early San Diego history! read more

We wanted a low key way to entertain ourselves and this was great. I was a little concerned initially about the amount of walking bc I'm pregnant but it was just fine. We saw zero ghosts but we did get some nice history of Old Town San Diego and we did get to see a bunch of different spots. The Whaley House is still closed bc of the pandemic but it made it easier to take pics outside. We also probably freaked out a diner near the cemetery by discovering and then pointing out the grave site markers on the sidewalk (one of which was next to his table) as we walked to our next destination. Honestly, some of the one-star reviews did not deter me from reaching out to Mike and setting up a $40 ghost hunting experience with him. I am truly grateful he had the tools I didn't have so we could have an amazing ghost hunting experience. He knows what he is doing. His expert advice also helped me learn new tricks as a new amateur ghost hunter. This tour was not all about the history of the place and more focused on ghosts and ghost hunting which truly delighted me. During our hunt he gave us many opportunities to ask questions. We were disappointed we did not see more ghosts... however, that wasn't the fault of our host who let us in parts of the Cosmopolitan that the public does not have access to. Always love a good ghost tour! So much to see and do and then come bring yourself to the night life for a tour.

My husband, son, and I decided to take this tour our last night in town. I'm familiar with tours and can easily tell the difference between "smoke and mirrors" and authentic ghost hunting from someone passionate about the field. Michael was professional and extremely knowledgeable. His experiences were intriguing. When we arrived to the Hotel (our final stop) he told us some personal stories and showed us evidence that other customers acquired during his tours. I received several EVP's at this location and my husband snapped an amazing photo. Michael has a legitimate gift to sense/see spirits. He had us touch spirits he could see. When he had A spirit touch my shoulders he simultaneously had my son run his hand through the location. He left the room and told my husband I was having an experience. My husband came in shortly after and snapped this picture. The only people in the room were myself, my son in front of me, another man from the tour sitting in a chair behind me ( you can see the top of his cap) and my husband taking the picture. At the last minute (4 pm) we decided to call about a tour (for 7 pm same night) and Michael accommodated me and my husband. He knew a lot of history of the old town area which my husband particularly enjoyed and of possible ghost sightings which I particularly enjoyed. We ended at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and although its restaurant was closed (due to lack of staffing due to COVID), he has permission to go inside. It was really spooky because it was so empty of people. The old small cemetery was also a great find. To hear the story about how the city paved over gravesites and then placed markers to indicate the grave site was interesting. read more

We took this tour on a whim while we were in town for spring break. Michael was very accommodating as we decided to leave Petco Park early to do this and got a little slowed down by the light rail. We also contemplated if the kids would enjoy this (ages 7). Our group, 8 of us total, had a blast. The tour was very informative, especially when it. Ame to explaining things from a historical standpoint. Michael was awesome explaining the paranormal to our kids (who have never seen any kind of ghost hunter stuff), and really included them on the tour. The tour included walking from the historical old town, to the whaley house (did not get to go in), to the cemetery. At the cemetery, Michael explained the grave site markers, and the vortex. From the cemetery, we walked to the Cosmo. We were allowed to freely roam the Cosmo with the EMF device for a good hour. Michael showed us diffetent techniques to sense the spirits. The kids absolutly loved it, as did the adults. This tour jump started my kids wanting to ghost hunt all week. I would definitly take this tour again. read more

I called 30 minutes before the 7pm tour on Friday and reserved a spot for my husband and I. We walked through Old Town and Michael our guide told us about the history and some paranormal activity. The best part and the reason this tour is 5 stars, we went into the Cosmopolitan Hotel where he gave us time to walk through and take photos/videos. At one point of the tour I felt a heaviness and goosebumps around my legs. Michael said a little boy was visiting. Everyone in our tour definitely felt something. Towards the end we were all standing around the bar area when my husband sees a black shadow walking past in another room. At that point everyone was in the room with us and we knew he saw a ghost!! Spooky , historical, and fun. Not sure if anything was real or just us getting caught up in the stories and the atmosphere when we said we felt the spirits when he said they were around. Not scary more for the ghost hunting /adventure watchers wanting to do the what you see them doing on TV. The "tour" consisted of us following him around & stopping every 2-5 minutes to discuss his "encounters." He would begin by saying "One time I was sitting here & thought I heard/saw...." At the end of the tour we sat on some old rickety benches while he wheeled out a tv & other equipment & passed out 3D glasses (that he probably got from a movie theater). Worst ghost tour I've ever done. It was super lame to sum it all up. It was super hard to know where to meet up first if all. It was just a man standing around with a cap that said GHOST TOURS in small writing. He basically walked us around the area where he had encounters with ghosts. He didn't know any history of the buildings and area, couldn't answer any questions, and he made you feel bad for even asking questions. He seemed truly miserable and angry the whole time. He showed us pictures that people had supposedly taken and I'm convinced that the ghosts in these pictures are just people. They don't look any different! The Ghosts and Gravestones tour is so much better! It's entertaining, the guides are full of humor and so much knowledge, and they take you to even more places. We ran into them at one point and you could see how much fun they were all having and how miserable our little group was. read more

Full disclosure that I am 100% a believer of spirits, and did not take this tour to further believe in spirits. This is 100% a tour for entertainment purposes, I do NOT recommend that any skeptics take this tour because it's just not for you. That being said, this tour was so fun. Rebecca was our tour guide and her enthusiasm for the subject is what keeps the tour alive from start to finish. She is great at story-telling. Throughout the 2 hour tour you visit 4 locations, one being the Whaley House down the road (you do not go inside as they have a separate tour for that). This is not a tour where you should expect anything to happen; HOWEVER, when visiting a house is Gaslamp Quarter, a paranormal investigation team was in the house during the tour, and their spirit box captured a clear EVP while inside. It was totally unexpected and probably the coolest thing to happen on the tour. The only downsides for me was I wish the tour was a bit longer so we could visit more places, and wish we could have gone inside more places. But it is totally understandable why that was not possible. IMPORTANT NOTE - bring cash so you can tip the tour guide. They deserve it. read more

If you watch the ghost hunting shows, you will be able to duplicate the experience somewhat on the expedition, in cemeteries, battlefields and by the Whaley House. We were a little skeptical, but the evidence was strong. I have no system of belief to explain the phenomenon (ghosts, spirits, energy), but we were able to observe it clearly. The man who guides these tours is the real deal, in our opinion. If you go on the execution, you can be skeptical and see what happens. Ask him lots of questions. He has been doing this for years. We have taken tours before in several states as we move about but this was our first experience with EMF meters & we had a lot of luck. I'm not one to draw attention to myself or make a big fuss but I was definitely feeling 'odd' after being at the Cosmopolitan. I had to close my eyes and hold my breath as I had a major hot flash and felt as if I was going to throw up. After that sensation I just kept feeling things on the back of my neck and head. Nina and I have been doing this Ghost Tour thing for years, matter of fact we always make it a point when we visit a new city to check in and see if they have a walking ghost tour. It is a great way to see the sites and it helps that you have a local telling you all the myths and legends that accompany the sidewalks that you are walking on. When Nina and I were in New Orleans in 2005, 3 weeks after Hurricane Katrina we had our first ghost experience while staying in the French Quarter. With that in mind, we decided to look up long time Paranormal and Ghost aficionado Michael Brown. We met him at the Water Fountain outside Plaza Del Pasado inside the Old Town State Historic Park in Old San Diego. The price is fair for the experience, I would say it is definitely a must do. Strangely enough, I felt a strange connection as we walked by the Whaley House, I felt like something was watching me. I couldn't wait to get out of that part of the tour; generally it takes a lot to get me freaked out. But there I was walking along the stone path; I could feel the death permeating up from the soil and through my Olukai flip flops. Maybe I should wash them. Nina even felt like throwing up. Weird. Michael is very passionate about what he does; I admire that. Consequently I doubt that he is not telling the truth. Understand, I am a born skeptic. From law school to my business, I am always wary. But for whatever reason, when it comes to the afterlife and the cross between then, now and the future, I have had a hard time thinking that there is a clear one directional line from the past to present. I went on this tour a few years back but it's something I haven't forgotten about. The tour itself was interesting but even if ghosts do exist, you can't force them to make appearances. This of course could lead to an uneventful tour, but that's pretty much a ghost tour. We walked around various parts of Old Town while Michael gave insight into reported activity in some places. It was a typical ghost tour, except for the fact that the guide is in fact a real life ghost hunter. I did like his passion and enthusiasm for what he does. The most interesting part of the tour was at the end when we were taken to the vortex on the Whaley House lawn. He claimed the vortex was like a portal to another dimension or something like that. I think it was likely more an energy vortex perhaps like the ones in Sedona, Arizona. That said, what happened next is why I'm writing this review. The guide said that some people can feel it while others can't. He located the vortex with an EMF meter and said that if you put your hands over it, you'll feel a tingle and a warmth. To my surprise, my hands started tingling and it felt like my hands were experiencing a hot flash. But most interesting was the fact that I actually felt the energy itself!! Every time I pressed against it, it resisted me firmly. It felt like the equivalent of someone else's hand's pressed against mine pushing back equally as firm. I continued pressing my hands towards the ground but no matter how hard I pressed down, the resistance in the thin air forced them back. So there I was, standing in the middle of the Whaley House lawn after mid-night, interacting with this invisible force of energy. I kid you not, this literally happened. Lame! Best way to describe this Ghost Tour. I've been on a few others and knowing they are cheesy is half the fun. The Ghost Tour that I went on when I lived on Oahu was so much better than this one...despite the cheese. The guide seemed like a serious former/current military person who came across as knowledgeable...but unbelievable. I seriously doubt he did the stuff he claimed he did to 'catch' ghost/orb sitings. I kept saying to myself: Really? I have to agree with everything that Angela R. said in her review. Glad I bought the tickets from LivingSocial and not full price. I am also glad there wasn't a 'natural progression' to tip the dude. After showing his lame pictures with the 3-D glasses, we were able to just get up and walk out...and walk we did. I won't waste another guest of mine's time. 90 minutes of wasted time...even getting a Pineapple Chile Shot before the tour didn't help. I think I give pretty fair and impartial comments and say what I think and feel despite other comments. That being said: I highly recommend this tour. Totally worth the price. I got some exercise, learned local history, learned some paranormal investigating techniques and experienced some interesting stuff. Why? I took this tour with my daughter and her friend and their family. We are big Ghost Adventure, Ghost Hunters and yadda yadda yadda fans. They done their own ghost hunting tours at the Stanley Hotel and Moundsville Penitentiary. So, I think our bar was set pretty high. I think I am a skeptic believer (I disprove, rather than readily accept) and I am VERY wary of "charlatan snake oil dealers." We loved the tour! One lady took a series of photos (3 consecutively) and two had anomalies. Another lady's cell phone camera began acting up. It's display started jilting and shaking as if she was running but she was standing still. Michael used his K-2 meter and found fluctuations in electromagnetic fields. The tour was pretty hands on. At the end, we got to get personal with an "entity." Obviously, I don't know what it was but when the air feels electrical (like that static from the TV screen or like licking a 9-volt battery but with your fingers) and no where else, it is interesting. If you watch any of the shows or what ever, you know not always you get something or not everyone experiences the same thing. I walked into the tour not knowing what to expect (actually, I was expecting a side show with no action). I did not take any ghost pictures or hear any voices or see things (other than feeling the weird electric spots in the air). Michael was informative. He has his tour script, but if you want to know more, just ask him. He'll let you. I liked him. You have to think about something, those who dabble with spirits or dead things are different. I don't expect a mortician to be all smiley and hugs. I don't expect the same from ghost hunters either. Heck, Zak Bagans is a little off too. So, that being said, I thing it was spot on and it was educational. I really enjoyed the pictures, the video and electronic voice phenomenon (EVPS) he had. I don't know why the people give this guy a bad review. I actually enjoyed the tour. So first off the tour starts off in the middle of old town. During the summer Micheal (the tour guide) usually runs throughout the summer. During off-summer hours he usually does the tours if there is a demand for it. Me and a coworker decided on taking the tour about awhile back. Micheal gives you a tour at night of the supposed haunted locations in old town. He basically gives you a short history lesson, and gives you the background on stuff he has captured at those locations. Make sure you dress warm if you don't go during the summer, as it gets cold at night. Also make sure you wear some comfortable shoes, as the entire tour is on foot. Micheal also brings some equipment for you to use and shows you the "vortex" at the whaley house. PRO's: -Pretty good price on tour -Hands on if you get to use the thermal -Very informative tour CON's: -Wish he had more equipment -I wish Micheal had access to enter one of the locations For those of you that have never gone on a tour before - make sure you bring a camera so that you can take some photos of the locations and see if you can capture something. So if you are having a hard time finding the meeting spot, you're screwed in general because there is no one to contact.
