When you do your own yard work, you use your own equipment- which eventually needs maintenance or some type of attention. So, I have a lawnmower and a weed trimmer that are both gas-operated and do require some maintenance or parts replaced periodically. This is a real old- school type shop complete with real greasy mechanics working in back. They totally know their stuff. This place has been a savior for me numerous times, even just for some sound advice which has led to less overall visits here. I know this might sound strange because it is! What type of business would help out customers to the point where the customer doesn't come back? Advice goes a long way and you'll remember as they have now built your trust. So if you are willing to get your hands somewhat dirty and possibly even watch a YouTube video, you can conquer these tasks on your own with relative ease. I've changed parts and carburetors on lawnmowers, replaced primer bulbs on trimmers which seemed difficult- but these jobs were a lot easier than working on my vehicles. The first few times I came and just dropped off my mowers and trimmers for repair. They were very reasonable, but I asked a lot of questions and now I try to do the fixing. About one year ago I brought my Husqvarna weed whacker in. It just wouldn't start, and it was time. For $128.90 they replaced the carb and primer bulb. Ok, that made sense. Brought it home and it started just fine. Then it sat for a year. Today, no luck, no start. Took the plug out and it was absolutely ugly. It was an amazing stop in and speak with the gentleman at the front porch counter. finding the service & or parts counter is a little bit difficult because there are motors, various machines and cars parked everywhere. But I'm glad I found it! I shared my concern about my Honda power washer and they solved the problem on the service desk based on what i told them. I wasn't even aware of a missing O ring and they replaced it as for no charge! I think that is amazing service and I felt i had to pay them something just for friendly service (the gave me an extra o ring) not to mention - educating me a little. I will start my review by saying I called about a half a dozen places before finding San Diego Small engine. I purchased a 40 year old gas golf cart in poor shape with the intention of restoring it. Long story short the motor seized & I needed a rebuild. I called just about every golf cart dealer/repair shop in San Diego & no one was too helpful so I thought I'd tackle it myself so I ordered everything you'd need online & once it was torn down I quickly realized I was in over my head not having the proper press or experience to put it back together. I gave them a call & explained my situation they were super friendly & knowledgeable & told me to bring it in. I brought my box of motor parts & sure enough they called me a couple days later to pickup my freshly rebuilt motor! I was stoked they didn't overcharge me & we're happy to install customer supplied parts. 5 stars for that experience! Fast forward a few weeks & I have the cart back from the body shop & have the motor installed & I just can't get it to start :( bummer especially with a 4th of July camping trip planned. I called them the week before & explained the situation knowing it was too short of time to realistically expect them to sort it out. They said drop it off Monday the 1st & we'll do our best to get it done before the 4th.. dropped it off fist thing Monday AM & explained I needed the brakes/exhaust done & most importantly I'd like it to run. They called me to see if I might have had a part from the carburetor I that was missing which after checking sure enough was on the old motor, I dropped it off & the cart was ready first thing Wednesday AM!!! They didn't try & sell me stuff I didn't need they successfully fixed everything at a great price, I had brought in brake shoes & they wound up not even needing them since mine were like new & just needed adjusting. 10 stars for that experience!! If you ever need small motor repair I highly recommend these guys they are all top notch!! read more

I dropped a generator off to have diagnosed, they said they'd need a week to diagnose it. They never called me so two weeks later I called them to find out they hadn't got to it yet. A few days later I called again and found out the generator needs a new circuit board. I asked for a quote for the repair but they didn't have one prepared. I called again after a few days and they still didn't have a quote prepared and suggested that I find a new circuit board for them. I can't understand how they do business this way. I've been a diesel technician for twenty years and have never asked a customer to hunt down their own parts. I told them I would pick up the generator on Monday and when Monday came they said it was still disassembled and not ready. I don't understand this either as the circuit board is located directly under the air filter so no disassembly is required to replace it. I told them I'll give them a week to reassemble it, we'll see if they can get it ready by next Monday. read more

I have a small portable Yamaha EF-1000 generator. I'd let fuel sit in it too long without running it and the carb was clogged up and it would no longer start. I needed it the next day and Brian told me to bring it and he got it fixed for me and even fixed a problem with it surging and running roughly... Everyone here is very friendly and they have excellent customer service. One my first visit the owner Brian showed and explained to me different models and was very helpful. The second time I came in Brian helped me decide on a unit and I ended up getting it the same day! He gave me a killer deal, even hooked me up with different fittings and got me ready to go. I took a rototiller in that had not been run since about 2000. It was purchased new in 1983. needless to say, it had issues. This tiller had been in another repair shop prior to the year 2000. This shop was wonderful to deal with. they repaired it and its easier to start than when it was new in 1983. I will not hesitate recomending these folks to anyone. POOR WORK, HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! **BUYER BEWARE** I rarely leave a bad review, but these guys don't even deserve 1 star. I see they have all good reviews and that's why I went there in the first place, but they sure dropped the ball on me... I brought in units that had been sitting for a few years for fuel system cleanings. They were fast and called me a week later to pick them up. Upon arriving I was told that the generators both needed additional gas tank cleanings and the price was $120 more, even though I never approved or even received a phone call asking for approval. So I say whatever, I just want them right so I can sell them and the next person has a good running unit. Fast forward a few weeks after selling one on craigslist. The new owner contacts me and says his unit is leaking gas all over the place. He offered to take it back to SD small engine so they could make it right. They told him that it needed a new needle/seat and air filter was rotting and wanted to charge him for all of the parts. So I gave Daryl a call to discuss, he says "can you hold" I say sure and he hangs up on me. So I call right back and say, "I just want you to make it right for the new buyer" again, he says "hang on, I have another call" and hangs up again. So now pissed off, call back several times, but he obviously left the phone off the hook. I wait 20 minutes, call again and get a very nice mechanic on the phone who advises me that Daryl has gone home for the day. The last I heard the new owner has been back twice with problems from their initial work... DONT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE GUYS, they are incompetent, rude and obviously have no fucking clue about how to treat customers or equipment... BUYER BEWARE!!! read more

San Diego Small Engine repair is incredible. Brian is the man. He helped me repair my Suzuki DR 650 electrical. The whole wiring harness was melted and he helped me swap it out and diagnose the problem. He stayed after hours just to help me finish the repair. A few months ago, he helped me with a carburetor issue on my generator, too. Brian is an intelligent, articulate and very capable mechanic with years of experience. He's honest and direct and cares about his work. The shop is as legit as they come. Down to earth, the mechanics let you watch and learn and even participate while repairs are being done. I have a push lawn mower. I called a couple of days ago and asked if they worked on push lawn mowers and the person answering said yes. I then asked what would they charge to sharpen it. He told me around $20. I said I would bring it in. A few days later, I brought the lawn mower in. I relayed what the person on the phone told me to the two people who were working there. They asked who I talked to and of course I didn't get his name. They said they couldn't do it for $20 and could sharpen it for around $50, but if they used a special compound it go as high as $100. I told them I could by a brand new one for $80 and I left. This is your typical bait and switch. Be careful going to this place for any kind of repair. What they tell you and what you finally pay could be a surprise. I gave them a one star but if there was a lower rating I would have used it. Good luck if you use them. read more
