He says a very friendly "hi" to my girlfriend (she's Caucasian) then he sees me and gives me a dirty look. Then he rings up $6! Wow, I'm thinking, and give him $20. He gives me $4 back then he starts talking to someone pretending to be distracted. Then he looks at the register till and asks me if I gave him a $20. An adorable and quaint boutique/general store. Came in to stop for coffee on a Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised. A duo of guitarists/singers were playing pleasant melodies while we perused around the store, and there are a lot of things to look at (hats, books, blanket, bags, scarves, socks, puppets, shirts). There's a full bar and snacks you can purchase as well as some coffee choices. My boyfriend ordered a mocha java coffee and he seemed to enjoy it (I'm not a fan of coffee myself). When you step inside, you'll feel like you've gone back in time. This place is exactly as it was back in the early 80s, and I hope it never changes. Some staff and patrons smile and offer a "Hello", some don't. They have the best selection of unique, handmade items that you will find anywhere, including tons of awesome hats and costume items you have ever seen! Whenever we head out to the beach, my kids beg to stop here just to peruse the aisles to see what's new. A great place to stop for beverages, snacks, a blanket or a beanie if you're heading to the beach. This is a place I've loved stopping in about once a decade since I was a kid, and it feels the same every time I go back. It's got a great, old-school "hippie vibe" and a random selection of really fun (and funny) stuff to peruse: clothing, hats, music, books galore, food and tchotchkes. This is very much the hidden gem. They have their own parking in front and there is an overflow lot directly across the street. This is a popular biking spot as it's a great ride up from San Gregorio beach of for those that want a bit more of a challenge, from Pescadero via the old stage road. This also popular due to the original stage station being directly across the street. This is large store/bar/coffee shop/whatever the small hamlet of gregorio needs it to be. There is a lounging area that you can eat in, an old school bar and some small outside benches. The bar has a couple of taps, the spirit wall is decent, and the wine is unexpectedly good, if limited in selection. They have a full service coffee counter and the onsite kitchen puts out a limited prepared food menu-heavy on sandwiches. About 80 percent of the space is dedicated to retail. They carry.....well, a little bit of everything. Stuff such as lanterns, seeds, cast iron cookware, aspirin, advice, local wines and wine related stuff , western and work clothing, souvenirs of all kinds, hardware, toys, puzzles, aprons, home decor, cowtechnician hats, international beers, beeswax, cheesecloth, piano in-tune, books (literature, poetry, gender and environmental politics), beer to go, homemade sandwiches, soda, juices, diapers, crockery, weather analysis, coal hods, raccoon traps, posters, cards, tee shirts, buttons, candles, rain gear, organic garlic, apples and butternut squash in season and oh yeah sometimes there is live music. All of which is especially appreciated after that bike ride/drive in. It's not all perfect. the prices are pretty steep, and the service can be problematical. At times you will not be greeted with zestful enthusiasm due no doubt to the fact that most people wander in, look at everything and leave without making a single purchase. The quality of the coffee, music and bar service is quite variable. Sometimes that latte will be the best evah and other times the person hasn't quite figured out how to use the machine. Asking for a mangotini from the bar may result in sadness, yet they can make a magnificent bloody mary. Sometimes that seven dollar ham and cheese will be good verging on great, sometimes not. Part historic general store, part tourist trap, and park biker/cyclist bar, this place is all things to all people. There is a lot to look at here, including the largest selection of Lodge cast-iron cookware that I have ever seen. Ever. We stopped here on a Christmas day day trip to the beach. This was a bit of a childhood fantasy for my wife when she was growing up in Eastern Europe, when she dreamed of spending a winter's day at the beach. Of course, in her childhood dreams she was thinking about the Black Sea, not the Pacific. But this was even better than she could have imagined, I think. Temps in the 50s, bright sun, clear skies, amazing ocean views ... it makes one wonder what life must be like outside of Northern California. Cold, I imagine! The SGGS has a ton of stuff, from Milan Kundera novels to local beers and wines, tons of hats, T-shirts, knick-knacks, and some great wall art. The wooden bar is awesome. It's marked with the brands of local cattle ranches and looks old, despite the varnish. I can imagine ranchers and travelers coming here for a drink for decades. There is definitely history in the air here, even if it is unmistakably tourist-friendly as well. We picked up some matches, a pair of socks, some woolen gloves (from Canada) and a bird-of-peace Made in the USA T-shirt. Not bad for about $50. For a place with a prominent bike rack outside, these people sure hate cyclists. The service is rude, especially the pretty-boy behind the bar today. He told me my total for a cookie and a drink was $2.50 and then returned only $7 from a ten. I guess when you're that rude, stealing might be the only way to get a tip. They've got a single pitcher of water on the counter for water bottles and all they do is dip it in the bar sink to re-fill it. When it's empty and you ask for it to be re-filled you'd think you'd asked for a kidney. SG General Store, you think you're so funky with your no-talent entertainment and all the biker dudes that show up... Keep in mind how much money cyclists spend in your store. I just spent a lovely afternoon listening to beautiful acoustic music in this charming store and cafe, and have to say I can't wait to return! One of the most charming establishments I've been to in a long time. Lots of cute merchandise/gifts: hats galore, postcards, awesome book selection spanning all genres, toys and puzzles, kitchenware. There's also a bar, and some food service. I think the real reason to come here, though is the great musical talent and low-key, warm, community-feeling in this place. read more

I loved this place when I saw it the first time - a wonderful little oasis just at the end of the drive via highway 84 to get to the coast. Perfect little place to pick up some coffee on the way to the beach, and if you are lucky, some nice local live music. Then one day, I got a friend with me to show off the place, and while we were strolling through the various items on sale, I spotted a staff member following us around, doing a bad job of hiding himself while doing so. Another cycling stop on the ride from the valley to towards the coast. The San G General Store is a rustic building that carries a little bit of everything. They have an assortment of books, many about local history, hats, notions, cooking items, clothing (check out the huge pair of Levi jeans hung on the wall), prepared food and drinks. There is no real made-to-order food, but you can grab a donut or bagel from the counter and enjoy it with a cup of coffee. The seating area hosts live music, but I have never been there when anyone is playing. The music must start later in the afternoon or possibly evening. This is a usual stop for cyclists, bikers or those heading to and from the beach. For cyclists it's your last chance for a break before heading up Tunitas Creek Road. read more

My boyfriend and I love to take drives down south on HWY 84 through Pescadero into the woods to view the lovely houses I am jealous of and hidden gems such as this one. This place is definitely unlike other stores you come across here and there that sell souvenirs and unusual knick knacks. First off it has a bar. A cute, small bar with a few seats and a bartender who is extremely sweet and attentive. It was this particular bar that I got my drink on with my bff on Valentines Day while listening to live music, mostly Bluegrass and Country tunes. Right up my alley. After waltzing around dancing by myself [face turns red], looking at distinctive reads, Liberal bumper stickers and funny hats, I received my bar bill which was inexpensive. I was shocked since I had a few margaritas, a beer and a strong yet yummy Irish coffee. Note: This store can get a tad crowded on weekends, especially during bike runs. read more

I don't know what I was expecting, but I did not anticipate leaving here buzzed and $50 dollars lighter. I came here at about 3 p.m. on a Saturday and many of the patrons had clearly been hanging out at the bar all day. This local-hangout has a full-service bar, seating area, musical entertainment and an eclectic selection of...pretty much anything you can imagine! My loot included a picnic blanket from Mexico, an antique picture frame, a "Treehugger" bumper sticker, and waterdish that says "Cat from Hell." I had to abandon the turtle puppet that folds itself inside the shell, and the Native-American canteen. I mean....really. All in all, definitely a cool stop! I like this place a lot because it's a place you would least expect to come across in the backroads of San Mateo County. The random assortment of things that they have is always fun and cool without being self-consciously cutesy. And I like that the have a bar -- which I have yet to sit at, but next time. This review of a hidden treasure is long overdue. I lived in LaHonda for about a year in 1999-2000 and discovered it when I was driving to Half Moon Bay/Princeton-by-the-Sea to my favorite seafood restaurant, Barbara's Fish Trap (see my review of that wonderful destination elsewhere in my reviews). Until the past few years I owned sports cars and loved driving them on the twisties, so going a few more miles west of LaHonda when I lived there to get to the San Gregorio General Store was very pleasurable. I can't add anything more to the numerous reviews about the general ambiance, musical performances, and general eclectic nature of this quaint and fascinating place. I have purchased glow-in-the-dark T-shirts with images of octopus, squid and other denizens of the deep; beautiful cobalt blue glass items, great books of all types etc. The ice cream is delicious (I think it might be Marianne's of Santa Cruz), don't drink alcohol but I know they serve it. People watching here is a treat, you'll see everyone from yuppies to preppies to hippies to ? and many tourists who stumbled upon it when searching for a clean restroom (they are clean, but funky decor). Between San Gregorio and LaHonda, east of here a few miles, be sure to also check out the trout farm where you and your kids can catch some fish! read more

I LOVE THE GENERAL STORE. Where else can you hear an amazing Van Morrison Band, while you drink and shop for random items like...a cast iron pot. Or dutch oven...(heeheeehheee, I am immature) an authentic snap button Levi's shirt, a book about a carny all while walking a rickety old floor while you try to figure out where you put your drink down and was it a cowboy hat or straw hat you set it next to. The place is always packed on the weekends. But I have never had bad service. I think my favorite part is pulling up and seeing bikers (motorcycle and bicycle) sitting out front shooting the breeze with neither making fun of the others leather or spandex (either way, strangely form fitting) attire. Delightful spot off the highway........not somewhere you`d find by chance! It`s a nice 45mins ride up from Santa Cruz and they have the best selection of new (old-style) clothes and hats. Going inside on a weekday I get the "who the hell are you?" look from the regular customers at the bar sometimes ....a smile and friendly greeting fixes that small problem. I find the weekends a bit crowded and the music loud........must be getting older! Anyway there is always something to find in this excellent establishment and I`ve never had a problem with the camouflage guy or tattooed lady when getting rung up at the register. It seems like there is a theme here.. unfriendly service. I bought four bowls today. The young man rang them up, put my signed tab in the register and walked away to wait on someone who had just walked up to the counter.... leaving me and my bowls sitting there. What was i supposed to do... go behind the counter and help myself to paper bags to wrap them myself? He finally came back and I had to ask him to please wrap and bag them. The only reason i gave two stars is because my family and i have had fun there in the past. This beach community outpost is a great lot of funky fun! Organic soaps, strange vintage signs, Levi's 501 jeans, an eccentric collection of hats, kitchenware and books on outdoor organic living are among the colorful merchandise in this store. Looking for a t-shirt declaring that you are a tree hugging dirt worshipper? They've got it! Need a sign directing where your hippie friends should park at your house? You can get that here too! You can even shop with a beer in hand thanks to the bar inside the door. The place also has a fine sandwich counter, serves up a huge Popsicle and has quite a few other yummy food items in their inventory. A favorite stop for the packs of bicyclists en route from Old La Honda out to the coast, motorcycle enthusiasts and locals alike, if you're lucky you can also catch some live music during your visit. A neat little tourist trap on the way to the coast from the valley. We came here to meet-up with some family members who were taking a different route to the coast. The atmosphere is friendly, the musicians are good, and the beer selection is pretty extensive. There are a lot of reviews citing poor service. I can't say that these were the friendliest people I've ever met but they were polite, served my purchases quickly and tolerated the tweens we had with us with grace. I wouldn't stop here for the food (its just pre-made sandwiches in a cooler), but I did enjoy sitting down to enjoy my beer and listen to the local musicians. I would definitely stop in again when I am in the area. read more

It is a great destination for trips to the ocean when you want to drive along the coast enjoying the ocean views and land at an unusual place to browse a variety of interesting books, hats, glassware, clothing, snacks, drinks, and you might even get to hear some live music while there. Nessacities needed, post scripts, cups, hats, puppets (furry folk, the best to keep the little ones interested during a car trip! Pre-made food, kind of looked like it was made of 'hard tack' And as a last resorts. Small pot belly stove, coffee and beer offered at the counter. My one late Saturday morning visit here was mostly a waste of time. There's very little in the way of food, and the demographic appeared to be a mixture of biker, cyclists, and locals of a singular aging white demographic. In addition, the band that was supposed to be playing was according to the surly, disinterested bartender "not there," and the general store didn't seem to contain anything interesting beyond a wide selection of hats. this is a great old building in a setting that reminds me of a small town store in a quentin tarantino movie. i drove up to find this place on a quiet dusty road with old men sitting out front drinking bottles of miller beer. immediately as i walk in on the old wooden floor it creaks with each and every step i make. to the right a long bar stocked full of cheap bottled beer and your typical american hard alcohol. walking around i really don't know what to make of everything i see in this place. food and drink items, rat traps, clothing, puppets, buttons, stickers, books, chaps, pottery and many other off the wall items. the funniest thing i saw was a book called "the tao of willie nelson" overall most of the things in the shop are just not up my alley and pretty pricey. i can see this being a popular place for the regulars who drink and the creative touristy types. as noted in other reviews i didn't find the guy who worked here too friendly. he pretty much just stayed behind the bar and barely acknowledged us. i think this would be a much better place to look around after hitting up the bar for drinks. it seems the bars are popular around here so this town must be full of alcoholics. the two i saw were busy way before noon and in places you don't expect to see a bar. read more
