    Banned books display

We go here every time we visit Half Moon Bay, and this time, the checkout counter was moved completely, to a much more logical location. The old space has two lovely and comfortable new green velvet wing chairs. There are four more of those chairs in what I call the third room. But the middle room was pretty empty. That's my only criticism of this place, not enough inventory. I like bookstores I have to leave before seeing half the stuff. We liked the banned books display, and the others were well thought out too, like a mystery table. A kidnapping mystery set in Half Moon Bay? Cool!

We happened to visit Ink Spell on Independent Bookstore Day which was fortuitous. It is so spacious and cute. I appreciated the many different displays ranging from board games to the mystery books you could purchase for $2. This is definitely a great spot to pick up gifts / kill time at.

Wonderful bookstore, with friendly service. As expected, there's a great selection of books. I was also surprised by the board games, small gifts, and a surprising number of seasonal items. When I popped in, I really liked how there's a very personal touch to the store, including a Christmas advent countdown with books (24 books for $50, which is a great deal to entertain the kids in a novel way)! I would stop by again.

I love this place and tend to love all bookstores so I never felt compelled to leave a review. I was walking Main Street this past weekend and fell in love with their current window display (mid Sept 2024). They had 50+ banned books on display and numbered them with matching index cards to detail why they were banned and where they were banned. It was educational and stopped me in my tracks! Very very clever.

Nice small bookstore with a decent selection. They don't have magazines or newspapers but it's a good place for the type of city it's in. Good service too.

Such an amazing bookstore! Stumbled upon this hidden gem after leaving a Dia de Los Muertos festival around the corner. Ink Spell was having a October special where you buy one get one half off so of course I had to pop in! It got even cooler seeing the storefront proclaiming "Bans Off My Books + Body." Hell yeah. These are the sorts of local business you need to love and support! Also also. They had a really cool display of fully gift wrapped books where the only thing you knew about them was the genre of the book. Great surprise and perfect for gifts or just finding something new you probably wouldn't have normally picked up on your own. So much to see, and since it was around Halloween, the decorations were great too. Ended up walking out with two books, wishing I could get more. Love this gem, and can't wait to come back next time I'm in Half Moon Bay!

Screw censorship, buy banned books and save history.

Cute book store along main street! Lots of selection of books and toys for the kids. Will be returning in the future!

The staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere and design of the store create a cozy feeling, making one feel very comfortable, with bright lighting. There is a wide selection of both valuable second-hand books and new books to choose from, at reasonable prices. There are also many choices of toys for children, which is very heartwarming. The bookstore also hosts many meaningful events.

    Lovely book store

Community-oriented cafe in the Outer Sunset district!…read more Blackbird is located across the street from Hook Fish, meaning that parking is packed and hard to find, so use public transit! I have gone to Blackbird a handful of times and have enjoyed the experience each time. Blackbird is primarily a bookstore, but they do have an outdoor window where you can order drinks ranging from matcha (Rocky's Matcha, if you're curious about which brand they use), lattes, and tea. They also carry a good amount of pastries (even mid-day, they have a lot of goodies), which I really appreciated. When you order your drink, you have to enter inside the bookstore to wait for your drink to be called, but you can take the time to stroll around and look at their book selection and trinkets. Heads up: the seating here is limited but very lovely. Inside, there are a couple of community tables, but their outdoor area is absolutely magical, with lush greenery and benches for you to enjoy your drinks. This time around, I got one of their seasonal drinks, a honey lavender vanilla latte, and I paired it with an Earl Grey olive oil loaf. The portion of the pastry was generous and moist, while the icing was not too sweet. Overall, a great pick for a cafe if you're in the area.

Matcha latte with whole milk : It's very savory which is great, unsweetened by default. I thought this was one of the better matchas I've had if you want to be able to taste the matcha strongly. Olive oil spelt cake: It reminds me of pound cake. Not that sweet except the frosting/icing. It was okay but as someone who's not as fond of that kind of cakey texture, I'd probably not get it again. They have a really lovely garden and patio in the back. There is also a bathroom. The acoustics and set up for events isn't great, though. It was hard for me to concentrate on the speaker for the book talk since you can hear the noises from the cafe behind and also the sounds of other store customers all around you. That was the only downside, but I think it's a very charming bookstore otherwise.

This may be my favorite used bookstore yet!…read more The ladies working there were so welcoming and friendly. They let me and my boyfriend in a few minutes before opening so we could get out of the cold. So thoughtful. The selection was amazing. I snagged some older titles and then came across a table with some newer titles and all $6 and under. What a bargain. Will absolutely be back!

This place is really hole-in-the-wall basement ish warehouse type feel bookstore. The prices are amazing for the used books. It is incredibly reasonably priced. I found two children's books in very good quality for $1 each. What a steal! For the most part, don't expect finding hot new bestsellers in here. This place is like for book antiques or if you need a used copy of something that might be a few years back. It was good for what I needed since I'm looking for some older historical fiction books about the American revolution. I was surprised to find two books here that I needed and so maybe you'll get lucky too! The couple who owns this place are very friendly. They said hi right upon me walking in. Selection is pretty wide, the books genres are organized in a neat way but the books themselves are scattered. For example, the fiction and nonfiction adult books are alphabetical order by last name but the children's books are not. It made things harder for me to look but I didn't mind since I had time. If you're in a rush then maybe this place isn't the best or just ask the lady up front for help! Overall this place is a gem and the proceeds go to a good cause--San Mateo historical foundation!
