Overall, the experience has been great--and the girls on each team have fun during the games. It's ALL about the kids having a good time, but as usual, some parents are more concerned about feeding their ego. My one bit of feedback would be to spend a little bit more (happy to pay an additional $10 for registration) money to hire umpires/referees/officials for the games. Similar to soccer leagues for youth (they have middle/high-school students referee), you can most likely find a cost efficient method to hire officials for the games. Why? Well, the current system gives the coaches the responsibility to not only coach, but to officiate the games too (they call balls/strikes, outs, etc). So, what that does, is create an opportunity for five different teams (five is just an example number) to interpret the rules five different ways--and when rules are interpreted differently, it creates game-time debates about the aforementioned rules. On top of that, there are the parents/coaches who have been doing it for a while, and know how to use the rule book to their advantage against newer coaches. Should I need to make such a recommendation? No. You would think the parents of 7-8yr old kids would chill out--but if you have now, or have ever had your child enrolled in sports, you know how the cookie crumbles. You sometimes just have to shake your head. So, on behalf of the parents who don't want to hear bickering back and forth between coaches who interpret rules differently, or coaches who have other teams follow the rules, but break them two innings later, please think of getting some third party officials for the games...even if that official is another parent volunteer (not from either team).

It has good players and competitive teams, but our experience was mixed. The club seems more…read morefocused on winning tournaments than developing all players. Many strong player are recruited from nearyby clubs and even out of state. The club fee is stated at $6,000-$8,000. That's only part of the travel volleyball cost. After travel, tournament fees, and other expenses, our total for the season was closer to $15,000-$20,000, which wasn't clearly explained upfront. Playing time was also very limited for many players, even during less important tournaments for -1, -2, -3 teams. It is understable that -1 team has this since -1 teams play in open division, want to win and get seen by the college recruits. -2 and -3 teams are more developmental. If players do not play, how will they improve? We heard quite a bit of frustration among middle school teams at bay to bay about this, where the focus should be really on learning and building confidence. The club might be a fit for families focused on competitive results and evetually want kids to become college players. Actually, many D1 teams have a large team roster. College players compete to even get the training time and let alone the play time on the court. So, some mental training is needed. Hoever, those looking for development, a healthy sport as life long hobby and clearer cost expectations should ask detailed questions before joining.

We didn't get any notice for the players that they didn't make team or training group. No message from them, not even a thank you for coming or sorry that you didn't make the team. A total inconsideration to the players and their families that were waiting and this is very unprofessional. I won't recommend this place at all. If you're looking for a place for your child to learn, grow, or play volleyball, this is not the place for you. They apparently hired someone to help kids emotionally traverse the journey and stress of playing volleyball. This shows the complete opposite. What a joke!

I've been taking my older daughter, Anya Shah, to Cutting Edge since she was 8. A quick search led us to Cutting Edge, and from the start, Coach Leann and Coach Terry impressed us with their strong emphasis on pitching fundamentals. Over the years, she has also played in the Palo Alto league and with several elite travel clubs in the area. Even with a 45-minute drive each way, we've stayed committed because it's completely worth it. Within just a few weeks, I could already see Anya developing key skills, especially with her fastball. Coach Leann has a great ability to understand that every player is different and makes small, thoughtful adjustments to help each athlete improve steadily. One thing I really value is that they don't rush into teaching new pitches until the current one is fully mastered. That focus on fundamentals makes a big difference compared to trying to learn everything at once, which often doesn't last. What truly sets Cutting Edge apart is how they build on what your daughter already brings, instead of trying to completely change her style. Over the past eight years, they've been consistent, thoughtful, and incredibly effective, and we recommend them to everyone. Beyond pitching, Coach Ron has also been excellent, helping Anya develop strong hitting fundamentals. My son started playing orange ball tennis at this academy during the COVID lockdown, when most other extracurricular activities were suspended for an extended period. Before the game, the only thing I was hearing from all the coaches in Lifetime Activities was, they are the strongest among all the teams in the league. My experience when I saw the NorCal Orange team was nothing different than what I heard from coaches over here. And they beat our team badly on the fist match. Few things why they beat our team was about their consistency, rally and lot of rally.... Other than that, I don't think I could see anything fancy on those players. Next day I took help from a known coach who was working for NorCal tennis academy, and put a trial class for my son. First time that day I spoke to Coach Thomas about my son's feedback and trust me it was not good as a parent at all. Because right on my face he told, "he is not ready for yellow, he need to get trained more on green dot before we try him in yellow ball group". I was upset but excited to see how he will work with my son. This was around 2years back when I came to NorCal academy, back then and now, its a big difference and improvement on my sons technique and foot work. Now he just turned 10 but he is getting trained with high school group kids those are really high UTR players. The biggest point why I am with NorCal and wanted to be with NorCal is, they have something unique on their program which I have never seen anywhere before. 1. They don't care who the kid is or they know kid before or not. For them every kid is a tennis player and they wanted to help them. 2. They recognize the talent based on players effort and commitment on the court and put their extra effort to excel his game to the next level. Thats the best thing I have ever seen in any academy till date. - Coach Thomas watches each and every Kid personally to improve the kids game and explains to the parents about the improvement areas. - I have seen him always moving around with different courts to watch whether any one need extra help. 3. The culture is really family oriented and all the coaches are really fun loving. I recently saw the review around discrimination and was very surprised to read about this experience. Being around this club for so many years, seeing the dense diversity throughout the club and specifically on our teams, I have only witnessed staff and coaches approach all players with equal respect and coaching across the board. This club has continuously shown a desire to grow its programs and develop players to their highest potential, while also focusing on the foundation of enjoying the game and learning long lasting life skills. We continue to look forward to each season with LGU and can't wait to get our younger sons involved in the coming years as well!

My daughter has been part of the LGU competitive program for several years now and I can confidently say it stands out as a truly inclusive and development-focused environment for players of all backgrounds. From day one, the program has demonstrated a commitment to equity, respect, and opportunity for every participant, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or socioeconomic background. Coaches and staff foster a culture where diversity is celebrated, and each player is valued not just for their skill, but for who they are. Our teams consistently were (and are) comprised of individuals of all colors and ethnicities and they have been celebrated and cultivated as the best, top players on our team. I've always felt the focus has been on finding the most talented girls with the best skill set for the team. LGU has created a close knit family environment and is working toward making the club a stronger and more desirable destination. I am excited about the move to ECNL and I have universally felt the goal is to grow the club and make it better without regard for race. Staff has also always treated us with respect and attention to strengthening player's skills looking toward supporting their long term goals. When we arrived today everything went as planned. The facility is clean, organized and the kids had the best day! They even gave out baseball cards to the kids and a ball for my sons friends to sign. We had a couple of kids who were intimidated at first and didn't want to join. We ended the day with everyone participating and having a day to remember! Thank you to the entire staff! The kids could have easily wondered off. If you have been to YMCA or any other reputable camp, then you would know how carefully they sign in and out the kids. None of that here at GRT Tennis. While the security issue is a big concern, the lack of instruction is also issue. Kids, at least beginner like my DD, were hitting the ball and playing around without learning the proper way to hold a racket or any technique. Just glad we only signed up for 1 week.

I thought they all did an excellent job with the kids and they sure worked hard! These kids were coached 5 days a week, not including games. They also were offered conditioning classes all summer long before the season even began. I was impressed by that. The organization were always on top of the kids records and safety requirements. We will be back for another season. The teams are based out of Leigh High School and games are often played at Los Gatos High School.
