    Carnitas

We have now made San Juan a regular place for dinner when driving to the Outer Banks. Our first visit was not that great, but we returned a year ago and found it to be a much better experience. On our first visit my carnitas were kind of dry and maybe a little stale. I decided to try them again and this time they were excellent, and I wanted to set the record straight. They were moist and tender with great flavor. I certainly did not intend to consume the entire platter, but somehow could not resist. Covington remains our stopping point going east and is also a good place for lunch when headed back west. San Juan will remain our place to eat. This must be one of the better Mexican places around and is certainly conveniently located. It is always very busy. If we arrive for lunch before they open, there are always people waiting.

I love this place, I have only been a couple of times, but it is a true Mexican restuarnt in the tiny town. The food is amazing and with the huge portions, it feels like a steal for the price they ask for. Everyone that works here is very friendly and the community loves them and it shows with the quality of the food of how much they love the community. A must go to if you live in the town, if you are visiting or even just driving through. Edit : They are my 2nd favourite chips and salsa location

The meals are reasonably priced (you can "build" your own meal starting at $10.99 for two items). My plate was barely warm but the manager reheated it. Temperature really improves flavor. The read sauce was delicious. I wouldn't order a quesadilla again but I will try other items on another visited. The burrito was yummy. One of my guests had the chicken fajita. There was only one tiny piece of broccoli in her veggies. She only orders this item and it was the first time it was just passable and not extraordinary. (Her four time winning streak ended) The place is comfy. If you get chilly, pick a table not directly beside the doors. The staff is nice. Even in chilly weather, the place was filling up during "rush hour." I can only imagine how crowded this place gets in the summer. I rate this place a B. There is something for everyone. You can order decent Mexican food that isn't as great as Cancun Restaurant. (But we don't have to travel as far)

My husband took us to El Costeño Mexican Grill." This triggered a desire to go try it out. She also told me, and our server later confirmed, that the owners were from Veracruz, Mexico. After doing some research I found out that Veracruz cuisine is known for its unique blend of indigenous, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean influences resulting in a rich and flavorful mix of flavors. So with this background, you can imagine why I immediately made plans to go have dinner there with a friend who also appreciates good Mexican cuisine. When we arrived to the restaurant on Peter Creek Rd NW Roanoke, Virginia, it was located in a small strip mall of two businesses shared by a gas station. Yet surprisingly it also had a brick outdoor patio dining area as well, with outdoor seating. Inside, the restaurant was clean and organized, simple decor, some very unique style framed Mexican paintings on its walls all around. As soon as we entered a young lady host came out and gave us a warm welcome with a big smile and took us to one of the tables to be seated and gave us a copy of the menu. Our server, a young, friendly lady greeted us, brought us a basket of tortilla chips with a couple of bowls with salsa, and took our drink order. To drink we both just had Iced water, although they had a variety of softdrink, beers, and Margaritas. The Chips were fresh, thin, and crispy; and the salsa tasted amazing. Their menu was full of authentic Mexican food, including, super burritos and fajitas, as well as their famous mole sauce. All at reasonable prices. For appetizer we ordered the Queso con Chorizo. To eat my friend ordered the Super Burrito, and I ordered the King Burrito. The Chorizo of the appetizer was the Spanish Style with is richer in flavor and the Queso was soft and yummy. Best appetizer of its kind I've ever had. My friend's entrée looked wonderful with Mole on top. And he said it tasted like heaven. My King Burrito looked great with the melted cheese as well as the guacamole on top, and tasted amazingly delicious, filled with quality ingredients seasoned and cooked wonderfully. For dessert we both had a Churro Bowl that also was delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant for the comfortable and relaxed atmosphere, amazing, genuine Mexican food, and extraordinary service.

They had a lot of customers dining in and a few picking up takeaway orders. It didn't take very long for them to take our orders and to have it come out of the kitchen. They have a spacious dining area that is decorated very much on theme with Mexican-inspired decor and murals. It was cute. I ordered carnitas and a frozen mango margarita. We also ordered guacamole to share for the table. The carnitas plate was a filling portion and was quite flavorful. I quite enjoyed it. I was really disappointed with the frozen margarita; it tasted just like juice, and I was kind of looking forward to drinking a stronger margarita. We asked for a little bit more tequila to add to it, but it didn't help much. I think was balance was all out of wack. The guacamole we ordered also never made its way to our table, and we had to ask the cashier to confirm with our waiter that they need to take it off our bill because we never got it. Overall, we had an okay experience.

We had to seek out the hostess to be seated. No menus were given nor were any napkins or silverware brought with the complimentary chips. We had to go to the hostess station and get our own menus and silverware. Eventually someone came and took our drink and food orders at the same time. Once the food came out half of our party was served, and the other half sat with no food. The food that did come was served lukewarm to cold. The half that didn't get served sat waiting while the other half finished their meals. Finally the hostess noticed that there were some that didn't have food and fairly quickly had the rest of our party served. This last round was actually served hot! During the wait complimentary chips were not replenished and additional drink orders were never taken. We tried to order straight from the bar and were told that we had to order from our nonexistent server. Clearly there is a management problem here. The servers were not trained well in attention to detail or multitasking. The napkin holders were empty and we got attitude when we asked for napkins.
