I wasn't even aware there was another San Marcos besides the Smithfield location until I drove by this one on the way to Crabtree! I decided to get my usual, the enchiladas mexicanas, and it came out perfectly. It tasted exactly how it does at the other location. The beans and rice were delicious and because I came during lunch there were only 2 enchiladas instead of 3 which was good as I didn't have a crazy big appetite. Loved the decor here. This is a casual place great for meeting friends because there's a little something for everyone on their menu. I ordered Ala Carte a shrimp taco and steak enchilada. Hubs ordered a mix of chicken and steak fajitas. This was served up fresh to my table. Of course, I had to try their signature marg which complemented both my meak and experience. I was recently in Raleigh in the Glenwood part of town. I was waiting on a client and was starving. I could think of nothing but Mexican food! I found San Marcos on the yelp app and had a fairly high number of positive reviews. One in there and the hostess was great, the ambience was wonderful, and my server was also great. Then came the food... A dish that's become a favor of mine over the last several months is tacos al Pastor. When made properly it's slow roasted pork roast or pork loin that just falls apart not unlike when we do a nice pot roast or a brisket. I ordered the three tacos and could not wait for that dish to be put in front of me! Truth be told, after only three or four bites I was shocked at how terrible this dish was and I mean terrible!Had the same dish numerous times in both high-end Mexican restaurants and also hole-in-the-wall, restaurants, and every time I've had a previously it was fabulous and "melt in your mouth tender" For some crazy reason this restaurant dice. I came with a group of 24 people on a Saturday night. So the staff gets all the credit for being so organized and having our table ready. The waiter was super organized and in control and that cannot be easy to do with so much to keep organized. He did a pretty solid job at keeping the water glasses refilled and handled the separate check very well also. I ordered one of the mixtos with steak, chicken, shrimp, vegetables, rice, and a ton of queso on a skillet. Great food, though I will say it was a little too much queso, to where it almost overwhelmed some of the other ingredients. I did add some of the table salsa, which helped. Overall I enjoyed the place. Service is not the best and could be a little more prompt, however the food was amazing thus 5/5 rating. The inside is decorated nicely in a Mexican theme. Menu is huge with lots of things to choose from. They serve chips and salsa right from the start, we complemented it with queso, which to our surprise was quite small for 6 bucks they ask for it, however it was delicious. For main course I ended up getting Mexican grilled steak which was basically a taco like dish, the steak was combined with queso and oh my, it was sooo good! Early Cinco de Mayo lunch for our group resulted in a visit to San Marcos on a Thursday. We made a reservation for 20 but only 16 showed up. But our table was ready when we arrived at 11am. We also had individual salsa bowls and baskets of chips. Our group loved the design of the building and the restaurant decor. It's how we imagined the cultural dining would be in Mexico. Our waiter was Chris who was friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and professional. He was very responsive and attentive to the table but I didn't get a refill of my water. We placed our drink orders and had some time to review the menu. Then we placed orders and were able to request individual tickets. The restaurant had a pleasant fun vibe even though it was lunchtime. Music played throughout and apparently employees were getting ready for Cinco de Mayo activities. Food came in about 15-20 minutes. A server brought a portion of the orders and about 5 minutes or less the rest were brought out. Nicely plated and the food smelled and looked fresh and tasty. San Marcos Mexican Restaurant was the spot we wanted, just because it looked so attractive, with it's Spanish/Mexican American decor. Not only was the exterior done in theme, the interior was gorgeous with tiles and artwork. It was just past Nov. 1st, so a lot of 'Day of the Dead' decor, which is so intricate and awesome. Our group was early, as you often do with a toddler in tow, so we appeared to be the first dinner customer of the day. The servers were amazing, friendly and helpful. Since there were 6 of us we tried quite a few items, chorizo queso and guac to start with some pretty amazing margaritas, but the Pama margarita was especially tasty - as was the chorizo queso and quac. We came here for a late lunch/early dinner after spending hours at the nearby mall. Easy to get to on the back side of the mall. The man who greeted us was both helpful and friendly. I told him it was our first time and he was very attentive. We were both impressed with the decor. A large place with lots of nice decorations. Both booths, small and large tables were available. Great salsa and chips were delivered quickly. Chris came to take our drink order and was back quickly. He gave us plenty of time to look at the large menu and decide on our orders. I got a burrito with steak strips, beans and rice. It was nicely done and flavorful. She got a enchilada, a hard taco, beans and rice and liked it all. We were given a sample of the queso,, the guac and pico and all were very good....so good, she got an order of guac to take home. The place was clean, even the bathroom was nice and clean. My friend declared it was the best Mexican food she has had since leaving southern California near the border and wants to come back. In March 2024, I was in Raleigh for a family function. Stayed at the hotel next to San Marcos, so I walked over one night for dinner. BEST dinner decision! The food was absolutely delicious! It was a Saturday night, so the restaurant was busy and lively. I had a short 25 minute wait. Once seated, the service was fast. The server, Edgar, was friendly. I ate the San Marcos steak burrito and it was one of the best burritos I've had. Other members in my party ordered the Chimichanga, Taco Salad and quesadillas. We have always loved this restaurant since before we moved to Raleigh. Consistently great food and service, awesome non-alcoholic drink options, and they accept Apple Pay. Today, I had sent in a pick up order for the first time. The order went through to the front desk, but, in the craziness of Cinco de Mayo, the kitchen didn't receive it. The cashier was so sweet and authentic. She explained what happened and expedited the order. It was ready by the original estimated pickup time (I have no idea how they pulled that off!):D While I waited, there were entertainers interacting with customers, and it was so fun to watch. The food was quite good. I noticed that both the queso and the refried beans had a seasoned flavor, unlike many other restaurants. Decor is of course fun, as others have mentioned, but dated and smells odd. Only weird thing was they added the tip into the bill without letting us know (and of course left a space to add more tip). A giant parking lot with ample parking and cobblestone sidewalks, which really gives it an authentic feel. You walk up to a giant set of double doors and through it a Mexican haven.
