We recently saw the last showing of "Anything Goes" with music by Cole Porter here at the San Pedro Playhouse. A small local theater with plenty of easy free parking. It was easy access checking in and our seats were located in the very last row mid section. We didn't know what to expect, but the seats were excellent! Great views. The performance was stellar! Cheeky humor, singing, and tap dancing which is not often seen these days anymore. Show was 2 1/2 hour with a 15 minute intermission. Restrooms were available and a bar. Pre show, the stage was set for public bar access, and then later the set up was incorporated into the stage when the show started. Cute idea! I would totally come back! First time visiting this gorgeous gem. I went to the Edgar Allen Poe speakeasy. This theater is preserved beautifully. It's nice, cool and clean with comfortable seats. The staff was friendly and amazingly talented. They were pulling double duty as bartenders, servers, MCs and actors. They were definitely impressive!! As the city marches in droves to see musicals, plays in venues such as The Majestic Theater or The Tobin Center I wish there would be more pause. I recently saw a production of "Rent" at The Public Theater of San Antonio while not as big as those venues still as grand. The small and intimate setting only amplifies the emotions, the passion of whatever production is being hosted. In as much as those places are vital to our art community it's still important to support local theater . I went on "Pay What You Can Night" which is typically hosted a day before its normal run. It's considerably less expensive. I imagine they set aside this performance to reach out to the community. It's also an opportunity to work out any kinks. In my opinion this is the most cost effective option. Another thing I found helpful is that you can purchase tickets online, which also shows available seating. The theater itself is located next to the McFarlinTennis Court by SAC, easy to find. There is parking but very limited. Once entering I was struck by how intimate the layout is. It definitely operates with the theater geek, musical lover in mind. At this point I have to be careful not to mix the experience of "Rent" with that of the theater. But I feel in a way both are interconnected. The acoustics, in-house sound are impeccable. For example I could hear everything with clarity. From the dancing of performers on tables. To the hushed silence in a soliloquy. In a bigger setting these things might be lost on the audience. But in this theater every nuance of the performance is regarded, simply because any seat is a good one. My only two critiques would be that seating space is tight. And a major one: it desperately needs rennovations. I noticed a strong, musty smell permeating throughout the theater hall. I'm not sure if at one point there was once water damage. Both the walls and floors would benefit from being redone. Even with these cosmetic flaws it's still a great place to catch a show. The Public Theater of San Antonio is a small intimate venue run on a humble budget. From the seating, stage and performances the passion is boundless. Whether you come alone, as a couple, family or with a group nothing is more transformative than witnessing live theater. My lasting impression was seeing a band playing in the background. You could see the drummer flipping the pages of the sheet music. It made me wonder. Does "Rock of Ages" have a professional page turner? An understudy? These are things that keep me up late at night. read more

I recently had the pleasure of attending a performance at the Public Theater of San Antonio, and I must say it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. As a theater enthusiast, I am always on the lookout for quality productions, and this theater truly exceeded my expectations. I went to see Pajama Game and the actors were exceptionally talented, delivering powerful performances that truly brought the characters of this theatre classic to life. I also went to the Fiesta Frenzy event they held and I think its great that they showcase not only stage shows but community events and workshops as well. So tonight I took my grandson to see the musical "NEWSIE" that was fabulous show! The theatrics of the cast highlights the Best Show in Town. The Playhouse continues to elevate their performances of excellence that easy matches a NY Broadway Show. The staff and volunteers at The Public Theater of San Antonio continue to be efficient and professional while we enjoyed the evening with fellow participants. The audience showed such love for what they experienced during the Musical with applause and standing ovations. This show is a must see... tickets for Adults are 45$ and children as it is a great child Play is 20$. Note-all seats are great because the theater holds 350 participants. Enjoyed the ASL night of Secret Garden last night. It was my first time there. Upon arrival we were greeted at the door. We got our tickets. Enjoyed the lobby area with its classic design and antique touches. Then easily seated with a pleasant reminder of 2 mins before the show. AS a regular attendee of Broadway productions, we went to Footloose at the Public Theater with lowered expectations, but HOLY MOLY! What a great experience! The casting was excellent. The acting, singing, and choreography were simply excellent! Only mildly negative complainant was the theater was somewhat warm (about 77 F) which caused several older to fan themselves constantly. Surprisingly, upon exiting to the hallway, it was extremely chilly there. Overall, an excellent experience that we intend to repeat. read more

I finally got to check out the San Pedro Playhouse and I was impressed! It is in a cool historic building and is right across from the San Pedro Springs Park. I didn't realize there was a parking lot so I just parked along the street at the park and walked through it, which was nice. The crowd is definitely older which is cool but I wonder why younger people don't seem interested in going to plays. I saw The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and really enjoyed it. The theater is pretty small so I don't recommend sitting in the very front because it is hard to see. I sat in the third row and I still felt I should have sat further back. They have some pretty cool shows lined up for this year like Beauty and the Best, The Glass Menagerie, The Secret Garden, and others. I am excited to go back! read more

We recently enjoyed Once at The Public Theater. I can say it was splendid. Well-done and in such an intimate setting. My wife and I enjoy theater from Broadway to the Boston Opera House to Chicago's Cadillac... and definitely San Antonio's wonderful Majestic Theater. Never disappointed, but there is something truly special about the intimacy of a small theater. This is why we also enjoy community theater and college productions. Whatever is given up in terms of big names or lavish productions is more than made up for by the enthusiasm and personal delivery. And there is no lack of talent. At times I have seen the same show in a Broadway production only to find a community group did it much better. I won't say that is the case with Once. We saw it at Bass Hall in Fort Worth and were absolutely stunned by the performance where the small cast did all the singing, acting, dancing, musical instruments... and even set changes. It's such a special play, with wonderful music and charming characters that really suck me in and, at times, bring me to tears. So we wondered if the local production could possibly come near that experience. It did. It was different. It had a different feel. Different people. But they quickly won us over and from our eighth-row seats, we felt part of that little community. We were with them and cared about them. And, like the baby I am, I was again in tears. Great story. Well done. Love the venue. We will pick another show and return. Oh! I almost forgot, the prices are WAAAY better than Broadway, or even the Majestic. read more

Where can you go for live entertainment at a reasonable price and expect to be throughly entertained? The Playhouse - that's where. It's an intimate, yet professionally run theatre. Showing a variety of musicals, it is a venue that doesn't overwhelm, where you can feel comfortable. My kids and I saw the last performance of Urinetown and found it fun, funny and very entertaining. The quality of the cast was great and attests to the kind of talent this theater can draw. 1/22/20 Ok, I don't know how to convey how amazing the staff, actors, plays, musical numbers and the chefs /catering company is on opening night! We love the atmosphere, and smaller venue that is the public theater! It's professional and polished without the high prices of the majestic. We went to our first play there called Once. I cried and laughed and they had me hooked. Since then we have seen Elf ( saw Elf twice), Mary Poppins, Matilda and going to see Gentleman's guide to love and murder. Every visit has been worth more than the price of admission! Season tickets is the most economic way too go! There is also a senior and military discount. read more

Free booze is not the only reason I like The Playhouse (which is what I think people are calling it these days, officially). I just saw the production of Annie last night and really enjoyed my experience there. The space is small enough to be intimate without feeling like you're sitting on top of one another. I would venture to say there's not really a lousy seat in the house. Plus, the little ladies that take your tickets and serve the snacks at the concession stand are just as sweet as honey. They put on one hell of an Annie performance. I was really impressed with the professionalism of the actors, orchestra, and set. Not to mention the building itself is beautifully constructed and although it's a little antique-y on the inside, it's charming and well kept. We absolutely love this venue and come as often as our schedule allows. We always leave happy and wishing it were longer! The facility is nice and generally the parking is ample. There wasn't much parking today as it is Easter and a lot of people were utilizing the parking lot for the park nearby. We have always enjoyed every play, but particularly today's "Reasons to be Pretty". The staff is very helpful and friendly. They have that too...even margaritas! The lobby area is a bit small and can get crowded very quickly before they open doors. If your claustrophobic, stay outside before you go in. I saw a play here with a friend yesterday for the first time in a long time. Very nice surrounding area and a lovely building houses this intimate yet accommodating theatre. The doors open a little over 30 minutes prior to the show so if you end up at the Playhouse earlier than expected as we did, you might be left waiting outside. It's okay though, you can take a walk around San Pedro Park while you wait, which is what we did. The staff was incredibly friendly and they offer some concessions in lobby to the left. I've been going to the Playhouse for years for the musicals (not the plays), PROS: Musical talent is usually exceptional, excellent seating arrangement (there's not a bad seat in the house), ticket pricing is modest and affordable. CONS: The last few times there has been a strong mildew smell. I'm assuming it's due to the major water damage they experienced a couple of years ago. The carpet and seats don't look like they've been replaced since then. I'll try one more time. If there's still a moldy, mildew smell I won't go back. (that would be very disappointing). read more

Wow! I took my daughter and son who are 15 and 10, respectively, to the "Hairspray" production last night. We had been at an amusement park all day in the scorching heat and were wondering if we'd have the energy to sit through the almost 2.5 hours for this play. My boy Matthew can't even sit through a 2 hour, action-packed movie like planet of the Apes without taking a little nap at some point. Well, let me tell you what! He not only was attentive throughout the play, he was also keeping up with the titles of the songs listed in the playbill as they were being performed. He was clapping for the performers in his own (he never does that!). My daughter, Leandra, had seen a movie version and was glued to every bit of the two-act play, particularly focused in on the extremely talented Ms. Ortiz, who mastered the role of the protagonist Tracy. And the bonus was that I enjoyed it thoroughly, so many talented performers in this one and I really could see any area in need of improvement. Such a splendid production!!! If you haven't been to the San Pedro Playhouse, you may just miss out on a gem like this one. It's such a fantastic environment for this theater magic and everyone who went last night I am certain came away feeling their time and money were well invested! read more

OMG! OMG! OMG! I saw "The Wizard of Oz" opening weekend and it was FANTABULOUS! The singing is awesome, the story well adapted for the small stage, and the Wicked Witch of the West is as beautiful as she is green! She gives SUCH a tremendous performance, you think she was born wicked! A definite must see and great for kids too. There really isn't a bad seat in this theater but moms might want to bring along the booster seats for smaller children. Also - I wouldnt recommend the first 1-3 rows as you end up practically at eye level with the stage and you'll feel like you are sitting in the first row at a movie theater looking up the entire show. After 2.5 hours of wonderfulness your neck wont be your best friend (and may remind you the next day that sitting in the first row wasn't really a great idea.) What are you still reading this for?? Adequate parking, although busy because The Playhouse is at the edge of a park and on late summer nights you might be entering the theatre while there are still many at the park, so you might want to arrive early if that is the case. I love that you take your print out to the box office and get a real ticket for it. Thanks for that. The production of "Funny Girl" which we saw was outstanding. I had not seen a production of it since 1965, the first Broadway show I ever saw at Theatre of the Stars outside at Chastain Park in Atlanta. I guess it's rarely done because of the iconic job of Streisand in the movie, but this production definitely rivaled that. Fanny was very believable, although her Yiddish accent was missing at the beginning, but by the end of the show we were all in love with her. Supporting cast also great, especially Eddie, Mrs. Brice and Nick. Ensemble was also very talented and choreography, settings and costumes were spectacular. However, there was one chorus girl who did not smile ever like the others, one of the main show girls whose make-up looked clownish, and one ensemble member who danced but didn't even try to move her lips to act as if she was singing. It was nice to have a bar in the lobby but drinks weren't allowed into the auditorium. Overall a very impressive production and we both enjoyed it so much--especially the musical numbers that were left out of the movie. Wish we lived closer and were not just passing through so we could become regulars here. read more
