We took the kids to see Dragon's Love Tacos, and it was a cute show. It is always nice to park at the Tower of the Americas and walk over. Bonus you can let the kids play on the ground on the way. The AC was down for the count. But they were managing with fans and portable units. The signs said repair was pending. A fun in town adventure. read more

What a great show! There is so much history here and I am glad to see the building being used for such a purpose, as it was first constructed as Beethoven Hall in 1895. The show was fun, lively, entertaining and the songs were catchy. I loved all the passion that the performers showed in their roles. And the girl doing the bus sound effects was hilarious! I have to say, the guy who does the pigeon has such a beautiful voice and I loved how into it he was. Matter of fact all of them were great, we absolutely loved it! Looking for a family friendly spot in San Antonio you have to come and check out the Theatre. The experience is high quality and fun. The theatre is located in downtown San Antonio. There is plants of parking and there is a park in walking distance for the kids to go and play at after the performance. There is a small concessions and gift shop to buy items. The Magik Theatre was truly a magical place! We had the honor to visit as guests on behalf of Yelp. I was grateful for the experience, we had a tour before seeing The Velveteen Rabbit. On our tour we discovered how long the building of The Magik Theatre has been a part of San Antonio. In 1883 it was first established but then there was a devastating fire in 1913 on Halloween. They were able to restore the building and it's been a part of the community for many decades. Magik Theatre opened its doors in 1994 and has since made a great impact on youth. The Velveteen Rabbit is a story written 100 years ago that stood the test of time. It's a treasured children's book written by Margery Williams. The play was so beautifully acted and pulled at the heartstrings. The actors are very talented and so full of bright energy. Children were captivated amongst the audience and it was very lovely to see how emotionally invested they became with the characters. Everyone works hard to make a great performance for their Magik audience. Meeting the charming actors before the show and taking a glimpse backstage made me appreciate them more. They sell The Velveteen Rabbit books after the show and plushes. I was happy to get those two items for my sister. All in all it was a great play and experience. Take your friends! Take your family! Thank you YELP Staff regarding my free tickets to see Eddie & Vinnie, the show was magnificant. I invited my daughter and a friend who are both Dyslexic. They also enjoyed the show and send their thanks. The building is historical and not too handicapped accessible. Upon arriving, parking in the parking lot there were not enough disable parking spaces. Arriving at the building, their were stairs accross from the parking lot. My girl friend and I had our boyfriend (Mr. Cane) so we walked around to the front of the theater and was shown the loooong ramp. We entered the lobby, received our tickets about 4:06 pm and was told the theater doors would open at 5:00pm. The usher was nice enough to acquire 3 chairs for us to sit in the lobby until the theater doors opened. We climbed up the stairs not knowing about the inside ramp, which was on the other side of the lobby. Finally entering the seat section, there was no way we could climb more stairs to our seats. Again, the nice ushers exchanged out tickets so we would be in the disable section and not have to climb stairs. The performance was very good, the 3 characters performed well, the props on the stage were great, following the performance, the question and answer session was interesting. One participant asked about a diagonal lighted board on the wall. An answer was provided and my daughter showed me she has a diagonal lighted board on her phone which is an app she uses. I was impressed! After the performance, champagne and juice were offered. There were items to purchase following the performance, so I purchased one of the saleable water bottles for my daughter. Overall the performance was excellent but the theater is not too handicap accessible. If you have not seen the performance, I highly recommend seeing the performance before it ends. My kids and I have enjoyed several performances at the Magic Theatre over the years. I love that the performances are done by local actors and that the performances are geared towards kids. Recently we were able to experience The Velveteen Rabbit here. We were greeted immediately upon entering by their staff and given our tickets. We made our way to the concession stand where we picked up popcorn and drinks and sat down to enjoy the performance. The play started shortly thereafter. The script as well as acting was carried out seamlessly retelling the childhood classic story. If you have young kids or even just like local theater, you should definitely visit them! read more

Amazing shows! I really enjoy the shoes at this historic theater. Nestled underneath the oaks and shadows of Hemisfair Park along Alamo St. sirs the little Magik Theater. It puts on tradition and contemporary stories for children and adults. The shows are high quality, not high tech, and enjoyable all the same. The auditorium will hold nearly 600, but I have not seen a capacity show in the few times I've been there. Floor and balcony seating is available. Online seating is available for purchase. The topics addressed range from girl empowerment to dyslexia awareness. It's a great venue for outreach and awareness, without the affect of actually pressing the audience to do no more than enjoy the show. The theater is clean and refreshments are fairly priced. The staff are super helpful, and make the show run smoothly. Parking is available out back, buts public for pay parking. It ain't Lion King at the Majestic, but the Magik Theater certainly brings its own sense of charm to Hemisfair and the rest of the community. read more

We went to go see The Velveteen Rabbit. This was the first play I have ever been too! It was Me and my husband with our 3 yr old and 1 year old! We had such an amazing time, way better than what I expected. My kids were so into the show! They were watching everything, they would laugh and get excited with the actors. I myself enjoyed it just as much, it brought me so much happiness. The theater alone is very cute and historic. It's old but has great charm. The service all around was great, they were very friendly and helpful. I recommend you guys come and watch The Velveteen play. They are performing from Nov. 18- December 24th 2023! If you don't want to read my entire post, at least ready this... PLACE YPUR PARKING TICKET IN PLAIN SIGHT IN THE DASH OF YOUR CAR!!!! I cannot stress this enough. They will ticket you. Sadly... haha. Avoid the unnecessary $30 fine for a silly mistake. :/ Much better experience than I thought it would be. Upon arrival we were greeted by a super kid friendly lady outside the door. She took our temps and gave us instructions. We sat in the balcony and had an amazing time. Charlottes Web was very well cast and very cute. Funny even. My family of 4 were guest for the Private Yelp Elite tour during The Velveteen Rabbit showing. Let me just say this was an honor to be apart of and we are so very grateful. The Magik Theatre has a small parking and of course the parking was full. Plan to park down in the public parking near Northstar Mall. It's a short walk to the theatre and after a 8 hour day in San Antonio we paid $10. So overall it wasn't bad at all. Upon arrival to the theatre we were greeted by the staff and handed my name badge (yes they made me feel special) and our complementary tickets (roughly a $120 savings). Crystal the marketing manager welcomed herself along with Valerie and Michelle and Anthony, Artistic Director, who led the tour. (I hope I got that all correct) it was so nice to learn about the building and how the theatre does so much for the community. Anthony you did a fabulous job with the tour. We can tell you love what you do! Thank you for getting just as excited as we did with all the interesting things behind the scenes. There's a concession stand prior to entering the theatre. Every seat in the theatre is great! We really did enjoy The Velveteen Rabbit. It was nice to be able to take our teenagers who enjoyed it too. Magik Theater has brought back the magic to our lives: post Covid vaccine Era. We enjoyed watching one of our kids all time favorite classic movie 'Charlotte's Web' in performing arts so to watch it was a little different but enjoyed by the whole family. Creatively executed! Place was a blast from the past. Everything felt extremely clean, yet antique. Old school, creeping steps, love it! Plenty of space for social distancing while still having a snack and gift shop. Everyone still wearing facemasks. I wish though people would keep their voices down when going to the restroom, you can hear all their chatter upstairs while people walk down the steps, they don't realize they interrupt the rest of us from listening to the function even when there are signs to keep your voices down. This a great place for kids of all ages to get to watch classic performing arts through a play. Come here to get out of the sun, do something different, gain some culture and magik in your life! read more

First I want to thank Yelp for this event, if it weren't for you, I wouldn't of ever known that my 2 year old loves acting and theatre! I enjoyed myself and I'm so glad that she did. The confession stand cashiers are so nice, they even give you a try to carry all your snacks and drinks to not spill them. Big plus to being at the concession stand is that there is a TV live with the play going on so you don't miss any action. The building is so kid friendly that the restrooms have a little stair stole to help your kids wash their own hands!! This was an amazing treat. I don't know if I ever been here. I grew up in SATX and even as a kid I do not remember if I ever saw a play here. The cast was very well picked and their performance was spot on. "Charlotte's Web" I'm sure is a hard play to pull off but they did a great job. Kuddos to the stage techs. The true heart of Charlotte's Web is the relationship and bond between a pig and an insect. As a grown man when Charlotte and Wilbur reached their journey's end I felt it right in the heart muscle. The only negative about the show was the sound quality it was alil hard to hear what the cast was saying most of the time. read more

The first play I took my son to...his eyes lit up! Then I decided to purchase a membership.; how could I deny my child this wonderful creative experience regularly! I love parking at the hotel nearby (Marriott I believe; I reserve a spot online), we literally just have to cross the street! We have seen several plays (The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Magical Pinata, Charlie Brown Christmas, and recently Dragons Love Tacos) now, each of them different but excellent. My husband, son, and I went to see Willy Wonka after winning tickets. The theatre is adorable and every person we interacted with was friendly and helpful. My son was a little too young for the experience, but he still enjoyed it. He's two, and I would recommend the theatre for four plus. He clapped along with the songs and music and enjoyed the puppets and actors. We also enjoyed the quality of the show. You can tell the actors are invested and happy to be there. The scenery was wonderful. The restrooms were clean and large. It was easy to change my son. The pricing for concessions was fairly reasonable. The water was two dollars, which surprised me. I'm used to four plus. They had a fun array of candies available. Before the show, my son took pictures on the Willy Wonka chair and colored while he waited. It's also right next to the Yanaguana garden and playground, so that was fun to enjoy after the show. I highly recommend this place as somewhere to take your kids to experience theatre and just have a great time. read more

Recently, I visited the Magik Theater for the first time while watching Cat in the Hat with the family. After attending a similar performance of Charlie Brown's Christmas in the balcony of the Tobin Center, I was pleased to find that seating is much more intimate at the Magik Theater. The balcony seats here were comfortable and even the highest view would have seem somewhat natural (without having to creak your neck to watch the show. Getting to the balcony was another story. The path is a long, winding staircase. I'm not sure if the theatre has an elevator. Any that may have trouble negotiating stairs should purchase tickets in the lower section. Before the show, there's a large bookcase with various books, stuffed toys, and goodies. There's even a concession stand with reasonably priced snacks. After the show, your children can participate in a meet and greet with the actors. Overall, it's a great family-friendly venue for elementary-age kids and toddlers. read more

I have been to the Magik Theatre a couple of times, and always enjoy the shows. This weekend I returned again to see Willy Wonka, and was surprised to see how great and entertaining the show was for me and my kids. From the candy man selling Hershey bars with a Wonka Bar wrapper (to promote fun), to the production, and acting itself; it was the best I have seen in community theatre. The actors manage to fit in a adult type sarcastic remark every once and while to get a laugh which is cool. One other thing I also thought was cool that the kids get to meet, and take pics with the cast after the show. The tickets for the shows are worth it; at $10 for adults, and $8 for kids. They also have season passes which are $99 for 36 tickets which can be used anyway, and any show through the year. They have about 9 different plays running through out the year. I am really thinking about investing in season passes this year due to the number of times I have returned. I also have seen coupons in the SA Express and in the local Entertainment Book. The concession stand is also reasonably priced with nothing over $2. I think the Magik Theatre is good entertainment and can create a knack for the performing arts in your kids. It sure beats staying at home playing video games. Which my kids also love doing, but boy they really did enjoy those Wonka Bars much better. read more

Adorable. Affordable. San Antonio gem. We are so lucky for the great people who participate in creating such a great treat month after month of hard work, tears and sweat this theater brings. Its in an older building on the skirts of Hemisphere park downtown, but couldn't imagine it anywhere else. They've cleaned, painted and try their hardest to keep its appearance up. The shows have always been tasteful and who doesn't love the downtown all around wooden playground being within walking distance. We have purchased season tickets and have loved every single show! Show lengths seem to be between 45-50 minutes which is perfect for going school age kiddos! We've also enjoyed the behind the scenes sneak peeks with being a season pass holder. We definitely plan to purchase season passes for the upcoming year. The online Camp Showbiz is GREAT! My kid loves it. I was skeptical about an online theater camp, but the instructor is a fantastic zoom facilitator who combines skillful use of the technology with a genuine interest in the students' development. Assignments are engaging and my kid is motivated to do them. We would definitely sign up for another online session with Camp Showbiz. Another unexpected but nice perk is that we can do other activities in the day and still do this camp. read more

I've gone several times to Majik over the years. I've always been pleased with their production but my recent visit was pretty disappointing. Aladdin was presented in a dual language and it was distracting. The dialogue went back and forth English and Spanish and it was difficult to follow. One character I thought was inappropriate pushing a particular agenda. Because of that I tuned out. I'm not one to write negative reviews but because I was with my children, this a poor production of Aladdin. I will be cautious next time I go to Majik. read more

When I invited a group of gals for a girl's night out, starting with a magic show, they thought I was speaking in metaphors. Much to my delight, the show was a risk worth taking! It was simply wonderful, fascinating, bewildering and hilarious, in such subtle ways at times, you'll want to pay close attention. Scott Pepper is a man-kid in love with illusion and it shows in his finely honed craft! Such a great show! I don't know that San Antonio would truly have the reputation of being such a kid friendly city if it wasn't for Magik Theaters presence. What a wonderful addition to any childs life to appreciate live theater. Enriching the young kids of the alamo city with classics like Velveteen rabbit & newbies like Aladdin. Not only does this company have five star productions but they also host summer camps & go into the schools. I love that the theater is downtown, has shows playing year round & caters specifically to a child audience. Now on to the actual shows. You think you come here for your kids but after you've seen one show, you find yourself on their webpage anxiously awaiting their new production, wondering if your going to laugh as much as you did at the last. Why? because as one reviewer mentioned they cater to the kids but slide adult humor in & has us howling. Besides being funny, most productions are visually stunning. There might be a childrens play room brought to life where suddenly the bed moves and clouds roll in & toys magically talk and move or whales might start floating in the air. Magik pulls out the big guns to keep the little ones attention. They also put a unique spin to each production, keeping the beauty of the original piece but tweaking it with a little local Magik flair. Something else that has become a tradition now for our family every time we see a new show is to buy the book there. They sell the book of the show they are producing at a very reasonable price but inside the book is a picture of the whole cast, as depicted in that play with their signatures. My daughter has come to love this & so have I, its a very special way to remember the experience. If you can keep a two year old entertained for 45 min and a parent happy at the same time, your doing something right. Come see a show, I guarantee you'll be gunning for season tickets. read more

If I'm keeping it real, it's not the best-produced play I've ever attended, nor the most artistically sound playhouse, but it's for the kids, and they love it. I saw "Llama Llama" here for my niece's third birthday, and it was really cute. Concessions run at a premium, and for pre-poured, watered-down soda, I was kinda miffed at what I paid. But, I totally understand why they do that, because they had that concession line really moving! So, despite my sweaty soda, I did appreciate not waiting forever in line. The Magik Theater is why children aspire to become actors in the first place. It's dedication to the San Antonio community is visible through its low prices, excellent choices of show productions, and the high quality actors they employ. The last show we went to was just this past month. It was called "If you Give a Mouse a Cookie". My heart melted away as I watch my 4 and 8 year old laugh uncontrollably. This is a place where there are no "shushes" or "be quiets". This place is Magik. What I love the best is that the kids can visit with the actors after the show. They take pictures with each child and autograph their program. My daughter always leaves wondering if she could be an actor and I say "yes"! What a great place for families! Right on Alamo St and free parking if you park at the ISD building. It's a beautifully renovated old building in downtown San Antonio. Walking in you are greeted warmly and can smell delicious popcorn. They have drinks and candy as well. I wasn't sure what I expected, it was our first time there and we saw Willy Wonka.....WOW! The performance was captivating from start to finish. It was just a little over an 1 hour which is perfect for kids! We now have season passes and can't wait for the new show in December. My kids already loved plays because we take them to the Majestic Theatre but this is perfect for them and they are surrounded by other kids. Because of this theatre I think it is going to grow a love for the performing arts here in San Antonio which is a beautiful thing! read more
