    Boardwalk over the creek
    Marcus F.

This 3.5 mile loop hiking trail has a bit of everything. There are wooden boardwalks, Monterey pines, sweeping views of San Simeon's trademark landscapes, forest areas, elevation changes, and of course plenty of danger with some of the worst infestation of Poison Oak I've ever seen. The San Simeon Creek trailhead starts in the rest area right off Highway 1 right before the State Park. From the parking lot you can either hike the loop that goes around the San Simeon State Park or you can walk under the highway and access the beach. Simply jump on the wooden boardwalk and you can choose your adventure. The Poison Oak here is crazy. It has encroached the trail in many areas and at one point you're literally walking down a densely wooded path with poison oak surrounding you, Hopefully you're flexible. Wearing pants or jeans is mandatory. I was wearing shorts and didn't get any of the toxic urushiol oil on my skin. Tips - - Hike the loop counter-clockwise ( head south ) - There's a bathroom facility located in the parking lot. - Another major hiking website calls this the San Simeon Nature Trail. - Plenty of benches along the way. - Many Informational placards. - Kid friendly, if they stay on the trail and dress appropriately.

This trail was absolutely beautiful! It was extremely easy! At some points you would begin to get a little warm but you would soon come to a hill top or opening that would allow the ocean breeze to immediately cool you off. The wooden pathways were sporadic on the path but very useful where they were placed! This is a must do trail, the views are completely worth it!

The beach has several really cool driftwood structures that visitors have built and continued adding to over time. My 6 year old son had a blast running through them and adding a few pieces of his own. There are also actual moonstones along the beach. I spent some time collecting a few since they come in so many unique colors and shapes and make great little souvenirs. Make sure to bring your phone or camera because you will definitely take lots of photos! The restrooms and parking are also close by, which is a huge plus. Will definitely be back on future Central California trips!

I've never needed it, but I'm glad it is there. Beach access is down some stairs that can be hard if you have mobility or balance issues. They are sturdy, and if you are able to navigate them slowly, it is worth it. The beach itself has driftwood that has washed up, and other beach-goers have fashioned into makeshift structures that are fun to explore. The sand is soft, and has tons of rocks and pebbles to investigate. As the name suggests, there are moonstones to find, if you have a bit of luck. Several times when I've visited, I've found these transparent clear and purplish/blue velella velella all over the shore. Other wildlife seen at this beach include moon jellyfish, sea lions (off shore), pelicans, seagulls, cormorants, and cottontail bunnies along the cliffs. There is a creek outlet that washes into the sea that can be a bit stinky, and tends to make traversing the beach hard past that point. Also along the water's edge, there can be some unstable sand areas, so tread carefully. This beach tends to have a nice breeze, and is refreshing even on hot days. If you are in the area and you can find parking, check it out!

It's a six acre park that has a large grassy field, kids play area, swimming pool, reserved picnic table area with a Santa Ana grill, individual picnic tables with smaller grills, gazebo, restrooms, and direct access to Moonstone Beach. There is no fee to use the park including the parking. When I dropped by recently in the summer, the grassy lawn was crunchy brown. I don't know the reasoning for the lack of irrigation. But it was open for folks to use still, some folks were playing soccer. The swimming pool was surprisingly smallish size for a community pool; it was covered up and not in use. Possibly closed just for the day. I'm sure the schedule is posted on the San Luis Obispo parks district website. The pool is next to the children's play area, gazebo, and restroom. The play area and picnic areas are shaded by beautiful old growth trees. This is one of my favorite beaches, in Cambria, due to the restroom situation and combo park and beach access. There are several walking beach access points from the park. But most I recall involve stairs. The stairs are not numerous but they're there. The beach has sleeper currents and strong riptides. So if you go into the water be careful especially since there are no lifeguards here. To the far right behind the restrooms is a ragged tag self made old dirt trail leading to the Santa Rosa creek where it connects to the beach.Beautiful views. Movie worthy cinematography scenes. Regarding the dog policy, dogs are not allowed on the beach. But they are allowed in the park, leashed that is.

Most people kept their dogs on leash though Be careful though as it's close to the street and people go around the corner there much faster than I would like, especially for a residential neighborhood. The bathrooms were clean and there is a playground area for kids. You can also access the beach from this park. There is a pool are that was closed, so as busy as it was when we visited, I imagine it gets even busier.

This State Park has a day-use area and two campgrounds: Washburn Day Use Area, San Simeon Creek Campground and the more primitive Washburn Campground. San Simeon Creek Campground is closer to the ocean; Washburn Campground is about a mile or two inland, overlooking the Santa Lucia mountains. The day-use area is open from 8AM to sunset, and is easily accessed from Highway 1, has picnic sites, parking, restrooms, water faucets, barbecue grills, and easy beach access (unless you are a dog...) One star down from an excellent rating for two reasons: The beach, sadly, is NDA (no dogs allowed), and the day use picnic tables are located next to the highway.

I also bring moving blankets to layer the tent floor. The condensation that builds up in the tent will make the floor wet. My set up was tarp, tent, moving blankets, air mattresses. Slept great. The bathrooms up here are pits but the toilets are decent enough and the buildings are handicap accessible. You can drive down to San Simeon and use the showers. They take tokens (if the machines work but luckily we found a shower that ran without tokens). The negatives: Ground squirrels. Dozens and dozens with zero fear. Keep your food secured in totes or in your car. The crows and squirrels will get into your plastic bags. It can get breezy in the afternoon. Secure your tents and canopy. Cell service? Spotty if at all but that makes the charm even better. Bring a book. Games. Take a hike. Hikes; this is tick country. Wear long socks and tuck your long pants into them. You e been warned. Fire pits (with a cooking grate) are nice. Nice concrete picnic tables. It's roughly 10 minutes to Cambria, 10 minutes to Hearst Castle, 15 minutes to Cayucos, 25 minutes to Morro Bay. I'll stay here again for sure.

April 15-18, 2025 - San Simeon State Park…read more There are two campgrounds at San Simeon State Park: San Simeon Creek Campground and Washburn Campground. Washburn Campground is a primitive campground located approximately 1 mile inland from the beach on a plateau overlooking the Santa Lucia mountains. The campground is accessed through the entrance kiosk at San Simeon Creek Campground. There is a short portion of the road that leads into the campground that is unpaved. We had no problem with it in our motorhome. There are 68 campsites. Facilities include a fire ring and picnic table at each campsite, water spigots, and chemical flush toilets. Token-operated showers, an RV sanitation station and RV water fill-up are available nearby at the San Simeon Creek Campground. Washburn Campground is the more remote and quieter of the two campgrounds. The campsites are fairly spacious and level. We stayed in site 212; but next time I will choose a site not at the corner of the roadway, because there was too much traffic along the rough unpaved road alongside our campsite. We had a beautiful view, though, of the mountains. Saw deer in the distance.
