Avoid the buses of Asian tourists jockeying for selfie-stick space and see 100s of Elephant Seals at your leisure on this secluded coastline trail. The Boucher trail is one of the easiest hiking trails in the area. To get here you can park in the official Elephant Seal parking lot, but savvy hikers know to park in the next parking lot north up the road and access the trail there. It's about a 4 mile there are back hike along the cliffside and the roadside through the windblown grasses and flowers. There are several secluded coves along the trail to view the elephant seals without all the people and you'll also get a closer peek at the Piedras Blancas Light Station. This is a pretty well maintained trail. We came after a heavy rain and while there were several wooden planks covering up the muddy areas there were a few places where you would step in mud. As long as you have hiking shoes you will be fine. No other impediments as far as trail conditions. Tip - Jung Ranch Trail is another easy flat trail in San Simeon.

First time hiking this trail 09/24/17 1.9 miles one way, so approx. 4miles round trip Starting at Elephant Seal Vista Point, the trails heads north and ends at the old hotel where people meet up to go on the lighthouse tours. It crosses the road that leads to the lighthouse. The hike itself was totally do-able but not recommended for people with handicaps since it's not a paved trail and it's narrow. The majority of the trail is covered with critter dens/holes. The trail is not too wide, in some areas only plank wide. So, you really need to watch your step through out the entire way. We took our walking sticks and used them the entire way. Overall, it's an ok trail. Not too steep. I would just be cautious of all of the holes. There are a TON of them! Forget going after a heavy rain as some places would get super muddy. I probably won't be going back anytime soon. The trail curves around closer to the highway for most of the stretch rather than keep close to the beach/cliff side. For that reason, I wasn't too impressed with it.

Bouche trail start sign in the parking lot after the main elephant seal bee point.

The smaller group size made it felt much more personal, and there were plenty of opportunities to ask questions and interact with our guide. Our guide was knowledgeable, engaging, and shared so many interesting stories that I hadn't heard on previous tours. One of the best parts was getting to see areas of the castle that weren't included on the standard tours, which made the visit feel fresh even after multiple trips.

It's definitely worth seeing at least once. The tour, however, left me a little disappointed. It lasts about an hour and moves pretty quickly through the rooms. For $35 per adult, I expected a more engaging experience. The biggest issue was being able to hear the guide. She wasn't speaking quietly, but with a group that size, a microphone or headset was really needed. Every time she turned to face another part of the group or started walking, it became almost impossible to hear what she was saying. I think adding some kind of audio system would make the tour much more enjoyable for everyone. The shuttle buses also need some attention. They're very noisy, and because they're gas-powered, it was difficult to hear the narration during the ride. Electric buses would make the experience much more enjoyable. Another surprise was the restroom situation. The main restroom near the visitor center was closed, so everyone had to use portable toilets outside. On a hot day, that wasn't a pleasant experience at all. With so many visitors every day, I would expect the regular restrooms to be open and available. Before boarding the bus, they also take your photo and offer it for sale at the end of the tour. The price was around $45 for a single photo, which honestly felt excessive. For that price, I simply couldn't justify buying it. At the end of the tour, they also ask for donations. Considering the ticket prices, that felt a little strange to me. Overall, I'm glad we visited because the property is beautiful, but I don't think the tour experience matched the price. With a few improvements, it could be so much better.

I traveled here in spring, so I don't know what summer bookings look like. The ride is about an hour long. We went on the booze Tiki cruise. The drinks were rather large. They offered two sizes, we got the smaller size and that was perfect for me. I was super excited that I was able to bring my dog! I paid for my 2 dogs, I only brought on (the other is 18 and he had been out all day, he was asleep in his kennel). They don't do Refunds, but I was supposed to get a drink pass, but I don't think I did? I didn't realize until way later, though. There was also a goat on the cruise! I like to call it, "The Story of a Dog, a Goat and a Boat". I think the boat only held about 22 or 24 people. It wasn't super cold on the boat. We were pretty shielded. Remember, people might be drinking, so it can get loud! I'm giving them 5 stars just on the fact that I could bring my dog! It's mostly flat and the only risk to small kids are the Cliffs. The yelp address is misleading (this is not located in Pittsburgh). To get here you must park in the Hearst Memorial Beach parking lot. Walk down to the beach and walk north about 200 yards. Look for the trail that goes up to the cliff area ( just past the Hearst Winery Barn).. Many people just hike to the San Simeon point and the benches. BUT I highly recommend you continue your adventure through the tall tree path all the way to the cove with a sea cave. There are several openings along the tree trail that give exclusive and private views of the coastline. - When you start this hike keep a look out on the right hand side for a very short path that leads to a huge climbing tree.. The kids will love playing on that.. - The farther you go the fewer people you will see.

Access to these trails are from William Randolph Hearst State Beach. Gates to the park open at 8 a.m. and there's no fee to enter. The trail is about 2 miles round trip and can be accessed if you walk along the beach (on the right side of the pier if you're facing it. You'll see a trail that leads up to the bluff, about 1/2 way down the beach. Once along the bluffs, you'll wind through the trees and catch views of the beach and pier. Not too far in, there are a few fallen trees and the path, at first seems to have disappeared-it hasn't. Look to the right and there's a small opening in the fence that allows day hikers to continue on (it's marked private property with allowance for passage of day use hikers.) It's a quiet trail that's partially shaded and very quiet. For a short while I was a bit unnerved being alone but soon enough I came across some locals walking their dogs. The hike out to the point is the big payoff and plan to spend a little while admiring the views, including a small cove to the north. It was the perfect short morning adventure and definitely a less known gem in the area.

Michael was extremely personable, friendly and knowledgeable. We loved having someone so knowledgeable to show us around so we didn't have to drive ourselves. We visited three different wineries and they were all unique and interesting with a variety of wines. We visited Thacher (6 tastings plus a bonus pour of cider), Whalebone Winery (9 pours - wow!) and McPrice Myers (5 pours plus a bonus). Plus lunch, which was included in the price (sandwich and potato salad and cookie)!!! Great scenery and a beautiful day to enjoy our tastings booth inside and outside each winery. We also learned so much from each person serving us too. Michael also went out of his way to point out local restaurants and favorite bars and speakeasies in the area along the way. Finally, we left a sweater on the van and Michael called us to let us know and he drove back to return it to us. We really appreciated his kindness and great customer service. The tour started at 10am cause it would be too hot to be outside in the afternoon. Our tour guy was very professional and knowledgeable about this massive vineyard resort. The tour took about an hour and half and finished with wine tasting in the resort tasting room. We were introduced to the entire property, history and facts about this winery. I really liked the cute goats on the ground. I was worried about them being in the heat and out in the sun. But our tour guy assured me that they made sure the animals stay in shaded areas and drink enough water to stay hydrated. The arts of this place are just fantastic. Owner is a big art collector so he covers quite a few cultures including Buddha (my faith)! All the arts are from the original countries so they are authentic. I loved the amazing art installations throughout the vineyard. My sign Virgo was on the top of the hill so we had to do a mill hike to see it. There is an art tour that we will do next time. I really want to know the details and histories of all the arts here. I was so glad that we decided to do this tour. If you ever visit Paso Robles wine country you might want to check this winery out. The prices were reasonable at $45 per person, $30 for resort guests and complimentary for members (2 people).
