It was intense, a lot of physical stuff. I'm in my 50's and ( I thought) in pretty good shape, but it was still a very good workout. I learned quite a few things about self defense tactics and security awareness in general. The large class was full of really great supportive women and the instructors and their assistants were incredibly kind and knowledgeable. Despite it being a large class there were a good number of instuctors so the student to instructor ratio was fine. If I had a question there was always someone right there to answer it. It has been in Santa Fe under the direction of Grand Master Daniel Walker for over 30 years, who is an internationally recognized master (9th degree blackbelt) in both Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido, as well as a master of Tai Chi Chuan. He and his group of expert instructors offer classes in all 3, and I have seen many classes with young children having a great time learning martial arts. Grand Master Walker is a wonderful, patient, and very perceptive teacher, and his happy and serene energy fills the Institute. Indeed, the energy there is remarkable! Alas, after a lengthy introduction, wherein we were all prompted - no less than four times - to state "our pronouns" out loud and repeatedly, we were taught what to say to friends who hug us without our consent. There was nothing about real self-defense, just made-up "microaggressions" for those with no spine or sense of self. Let the record show that when I chose to not specify "my pronouns" (on a Zoom call wherein no one was being referred to in the third person), I was not only called out on the call, but messaged in the private chat by the instructor who was concerned that I wasn't jumping on the pronoun bandwagon. I'm guessing they got grant money during the shut-down, and were thus strongarmed into this kind of indoctrination, but it was offensively misleading to call this a self-defense class, when it would be more accurately described as a reeducation camp.
