As such, I am in a good position to evaluate the City of Albuquerque. Albuquerque is the best of cities, Albuquerque is the worst of cities, it is a city of beauty, it is a city of ulgy, it is a city with wealth, it is a city of crime and poverty, it is a city of mountains, it is a city of valleys, it is a city of red, it is a city of green, it is a city of science, it is a city of superstition, there are too many people living in this desert, and there are not enough people living in this oasis, there are an infinite number of good restaurants, there are no good places to eat, it is a great place to raise a family, it is the worst place for a kid to grow up, it is a city of hot air balloons, it is a city of cold water rivers, it is a city of hot and dry days, it is a city of dark and stormy afternoons - in short, I believe that Albuquerque has only one face: that of a violent contradiction. I was new to Albuquerque a couple months ago and only had a few weeks to register to vote in the…read morenext local election. Since I have family here and have lived here before, I was anxious to get registered and become part of my new community . . . but I was worried. Registering is never as easy as they say it will be and I'd heard rumors that Bernalillo County Government had some questionable practices in the past. So, I quickly went online - which was a snap. Easy to find what I was looking for with simple instructions on how to register to vote. The office immediately mailed me all the information I needed to register, including a ballot for the upcoming election. I gathered the documents needed to prove that I was now a resident, did some additional research on the local candidates, and completed my ballot. Rather than put it in the mail (time was of the essence), I carried it down to the County Clerk's Office and hand delivered it. They looked at my documents and carefully placed my sealed ballot in the locked voting box. Whew! I did it . . . or so I thought. And with days to spare. A few days later I received a phone call from the Bureau of Elections saying they were not going to be able to count my ballot because I hadn't submitted documents to prove I was now a resident. I explained that, yes, I had hand-carried them into the elections office with my ballot. Because the person who took my ballot had not kept the proving residency document, my ballot was not to be counted unless I submitted (again) a document that proved my residency. I asked if I could mail it in. She said "no" that there wasn't enough time before the deadline. BUT . . . my ballot was the last one she was attempting to get registration verification documents for and, since I only lived a few blocks from the office, she would be happy to pick the document up. Well, let me tell you . . . I nearly dropped the phone! And that is just what the Tech from the Bureau of Elections, Bernalillo County Clerk's Office did. She was here within 20 minutes. I have never been so impressed with Customer Service from any business, let alone a State or County Government office. They may have had problems a few years ago, but they are definitely on top of their game today. My ballot was counted and I had a vote in the county of my new residence. Thank you Bridget Trujillo. Your service to Bernalillo County was Outstanding! P.S. If you have the opportunity to go down to the 6th Floor of the County Bldg, One Civic Plaza NW, be sure you take some time to see the wonderful historic New Mexico photos that line the hallways. When I sat down in the stall there was an older man staring at me through the crack; when I emerged he asked me for some drugs. I slid to the sink and jumped at the steaming brown water that sprayed out of the sink. Too hot to the touch. I tried the other sinks and they were all that way. However, speaking on behalf of Army guys across the nation; young and old; current active duty status, or better days past (that's clearly subjective), most of us will agree the Air Force has always had the better end of the deal in regards to their digs! Kirtland is no exception. It's nice! It's clean! It has a half decent BX. Aside: Air Force "Bases" refer to them as a Base Exchange (BX), while Army "Posts" refer to them as a Post Exchange (PX). Never to fall in line with the riff raff, Navy Bases refer to them as Navy Exchanges (NX). So, there's a little edumacation for you. As I digress, they also have a golf course on base, which is slowly becoming a thing of the past on posts/bases across the nation these days, and they have a nice service section for DEERS appointments that you can make online. It does the trick! Will it ever compare to Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii? Of course not, but we are in the desert, after all. What more do you want? Cheers!

They only take appointments but you can make them in advance or on the kiosks in the lobby for a later time that day. At first it's a chaotic scene and there's no one there to tell you how to check in. But it becomes apparent pretty quicly. Unfortunately there's really no explanation how to use the kiosks and a large number of confused people trying to use one of the two machines. I'm fortunate because I worked in tech for 30 years and am comfortable with computers. But the elderly and non native English speakers in front of me could have used a friendly face to help them out. Appointment is a bit of a misnomer, it's more like a window. My appointment was at 10 and once I got my number it was another good 20 minutes before I was called. But the TV system is clear and lets you know where you are in the order. The clerk who helped my was sufficiently friendly and quickly walked me through the process and I was out of there about 45 minutes after checking in. DMVs are one one of those strange places, like jury duty where you see all types of people. I heard at least two people yelling at the clerks for no apparent reason. Come on, try to be nice, they're doing the best they can in a chaotic environment.

They seem to have a great focus on children programs. I'd also return for taking pictures with the beautiful indoors space & light. Also, this is my first time visiting and there were homeless people waiting at the door for opening hours.
