You guys: cute. This is a good ole local used bookstore - the size, the smell, the employees. All of it. In the best way. I called to see if they had a particular book, which they did. Employee was kind enough to make sure it was actually on the shelf (and not just listed as available). When it was, she asked if I wanted her to hold it for me. When I came to the store, it was waiting right at the checkout. Also, I thought it was really reasonably priced. Could I have gotten it for like $3 on Amazon? Yeah, probably. But would I rather pay a couple more bucks to support a local business - and esp a local bookstore -? Absolutely. Full disclosure, I was in and out in just a couple minutes (quick service!) so didn't have time to poke around but I def wanna come back and spend more time. I went in there to drop off some books I didn't need anymore good condition I didn't know the right outlet and I found them through bookshop.com and I walked out buying two new books. Apparently the place had been around for thirty years ? I definitely will come back the lady who helped me actually had read one of the books I bought. I definitely am coming back here. Cozy bookstore that sells both new and used books, as well as some small gifts. Hubby and I were in the area, so he dropped me off while he did other errands. Located near the Del Amo mall, Sandpiper Books is in a shopping center across from the Carl's Jr. Good-sized parking lot, so you don't need to worry about parking. Each aisle is organized with a specific genre (Fiction, Movies, Politics, Home School, Childrens, etc.), and the authors are arranged alphabetically when possible. They have some old books, some signed books, some leatherbound books, but you have to search for them through the shelves. It's a very organized bookstore with comfy, clean carpet, and it's not as messy or run-down as other bookstores, which I appreciate. Prices for new books are MSRP. There are some used books which are MSRP, as well, or discounted by a dollar off of MSRP. There are some used books that are a bit more discounted off of MSRP, but the prices tend to be a little higher than what I've seen at other bookstores. The only real gripe I have is that they paste a sticker on the back of the book for the price and barcode. Unfortunately, this sticker does not remove very easily, and either 1) damages the book during removal or 2) leaves the sticky residue. I am aware that there are some solvents out there to take of the sticky residue, but it sometimes slightly damages the book, and I hate using those type of solvents on older books that have, for example, cloth covers. read more

Didn't actually walk into the store as I called ahead to check to see if they had a specific book I needed day of as they don't have an online catalogue so this is a review of some great service! The woman that assisted me on the phone first checked their online system and after she told me it didn't pop up, she proceeded to just go check on the floor for me as she was familiar with the title (When Breath Becomes Air - get ready to cry your eyes out). While she wasn't able to find it, she immediately suggested a special order if I had the time for it, but otherwise recommended Barnes & Nobles since it was a popular title which is why they likely didn't have it. Finding a good used book store isn't easy. This one is great! It offers something for everyone and the staff is very helpful. They have vintage and rare books, new books, many departments, and a nice children's section. It's on the smaller size, but they put a lot of thought and care into their selection and have nice displays. I particularly liked their pulp section and selection of old kids books. I love Sandpiper Books and almost look for an excuse to be in the area just so I can stop by. It is conveniently located next to Tom's Tacos, which happens to be a favorite of my husbands, so if I'm anywhere nearby, I will usually make a stop. I come all the way from the OC and my parents are in the North Torrance area, so this is like a 20-25 minute trek across town, but it's worth it. I place my order at Tom's and browse the roller cart of discount books they have outside. It's a small bookstore, but chock full of new and used books. The children's section is in the back left corner and I love going there for some books for my toddler. I've had some great finds, all around $4 or so, and I don't mind supporting small bookstores. I hadn't been in a while and glad to see that they are surviving Covid. The woman who has been there in a past was helping me, but there was a guy sitting next to her who looked like he was cleaning books or wiping them down and ironically was not wearing his mask over his mouth or nose. That made me a little uncomfortable as the space is not big and he was like two feet from her and maybe four feet from me. I had been in there for a while, so even if he doesn't wear it while customers aren't there (which he should), he should at least put it on especially when someone is right there checking out. That makes me a little hesitant to return during this time, but again, it's a great bookstore selling new and used. read more

A decent selection of books, and a very cute children's area. Unfortunately, there were some weird vibes - an extraordinarily large number of prominently placed books about BIPOC being brainwashed by liberals and/or Communists. It could to just be the used selection and a coincidence, but the more I browsed the more uncomfortable I felt - there are the popular books present, but a lot of titles focused on conservativism and/or discrediting a progressive or inclusive agenda. The feeling was enough that my partner and I both picked up on it independently, and ultimately left without buying anything. read more

We were eating nearby and stumbled upon this gem of a bookstore because there were shelves of sale books outside. We went in and found such a unique mixture of new books, used books, and collectible books, along with an owner who truly cares about books, books of all sorts! Modern big name bookstores seem to be arranged and operated on the basis of cash flow, whereas this bookstore is more old fashioned and personal. Tish, the owner, is conversant in books and genres and so friendly and personable. She has some unique finds and recommendations in there. This was our first time visiting under this new ownership, and it was so enjoyable to browse in a relaxed manner. I've been going to Sandpiper for years. They are the best little bookstore in the South Bay, with a great selection across many genres and a good ratio between new and used. Today my girlfriend and I stopped in to donate some old books and browse around. I'd had my eye on a two-volume Aristotle collection for a while, but it apparently sold about a week ago. That's what I get for dragging my feet! I picked out a used copy of a history paperback, and asked the clerk Colin if he knew how much a new copy would cost. He did a little research on his computer and found that a new copy would cost more than twice the price of the copy in my hand. I happily opted for the used copy! After paying, we talked to Colin about the store and our common passion for books (turns out he also wanted that Aristotle collection and waited too long) and if another customer hadn't come to the counter to check out we probably would've talked until closing. I can't recommend Sandpiper enough as a home for book lovers of all kinds! read more

As frequent patron of Sandpiper books I can proudly say that this is the greatest book stores I have ever gone to. This is not just something I am saying because I'm bored or had a great day. Here are 3 main reasons why anyone would want to visit Sandpiper Books 1) Staff: both timely and professional. They are always at the store and even when the days is busy they make time to accommodate the customers. 2) Inspires one to read: As I got older my desire to read began to fade. As a result I went to book collecting. But after meeting several staff members, I now find myself deep in wonderful books of various topics. 3) Great for all ages: This store caters to people of all walks of life. I love this store! First I called to check their hours. I don't think they have a website ...what, your check to Go Daddy bounced?!, and the hours are not listed on Yelp. When I called, the lovely proprietor lady was most gracious! I asked when they close, and instead of blurting out the answer and going back to her iPod, she said, "Can I help you find a book right now?" Why certainly, lovely proprietor lady! So I told her what I was looking for, and she bounded into action! How cute is that, really. She returned in a minute or two with the perfect book, and I asked how do I get the book? Most amazing and comfortable place to spend a afternoon searching for books. Great prices, lovely staff, used books are well conserved. Felt very welcoming after my first time there and even brought friends to meet the place. The lady at the checkout was so warm and even gifted me with the cutest book marker since it was my first time in the store. My only suggestion would be to have some chairs like cushion chairs or bean bags to make it even more comfortable. Keep the great job! read more
